    Owls are the most amazing and beautiful birds that I have ever seen. When I lived in the woods, we had one that would come around once in awhile.

    Used to hear this way, way off in the woods some nights. In my house in rural middle AL near a county hwy, but lots of woods behind us. Something so ethereal and otherwordly about that sound! Thnx for posting!

    I'm so lucky to have a mated pair behind my place in the woods I hear all of the time... It's a great treat that never tire of... You should hear when they do the "monkey call' !... Look it up on TY, if you have never heard it. I was the chief naturalist for a state parks nature center, and would go on night owl calling hikes with a group of folks to call them in, in a remote natural environment. These Owls are absolutely silent in flight, and many times would land unknown just yards above us in the trees, and start their calls. This would startle the heck out of even the most steely nerved person, in the best possible way.
    It was so amazing for folks from urban areas to experience this, heck even country folk who had heard them before, but never almost on top of you! Those chipmunks are very wise to call the alarm, as this owl loves small rodents VERY much, so please don't use poison bait to control mice, etc. Great video, thanks for sharing.

      I have a couple mated pairs or maybe a pair and their older offspring living near me. I thought I was the only one who called that sound the “monkey call”. Heh.

    A barred pwl loves in the trees just outside my window. A lot of people think his song is creepy, but I look forward to it. I find it soothing. Every night he’s singing. It’s seems to be the only constant in a chaotic world. I see him as a friend.

    When we first moved from the city to a rural property with lots of trees I woke to this sound in the middle of the night. Freaked me out! But I went outside to check and directed my flashlight up to see a beautiful owl staring down at me! Since then I just love hearing them (along with many other wild animals) call to each other in the night 😊

    What do you suppose was making that tapping sound. Too rythmic for a wood pecker

      Chipmunks. They squeak when they see danger on the ground and they cluck when they see predators up above

      To me at first I thought it was a horse with metal horseshoes walking on a road or hard surface. But it didn't sound like it got any closer or further away.

      @@CatmanOutdoors that LOUD tapping sound (as described like a horse slowly walking) is a chipmunk? sorry, but it seems way too loud for anything that small.

      urbanothepopeofdeath I’ve been around thousands of chipmunks over the years, and they are loud like that.

    • @nohandle27
      @nohandle27 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm pretty sure that banging you hear at the beginning is the clucking of a chipmunk. That particular sound is a warning that a hawk or other bird of prey is nearby (i.e. a warning that that Barred Owl is near).

      Owls are not particularly wise or intelligent at all. They operate almost entirely on instinct, as do most raptors.

    • @justin2308
      @justin2308 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      William Reely And yet, that instinct leads to some human-like behaviors (such as a maternal instinct and raising children) that raptors can do better than a lot of humans themselves?
      I think humans and animals have different orientations of intelligence. Our intelligence is mostly learned with underlying instinct whereas animals have mostly instinct with the capacity to learn according to different environments and treatment. Animals aren’t just systematic creatures or organic robots. If you look, you can see that there is definitely something more there with a lot of them.

    There’s a Barred Owl that lives at the local Nature center. She lives in a small enclosure because she has a busted wing. I occasionally visit her when i go for walks. I think she might recognize me

    My husband and I walk in the woods a lot in central Georgia. When we go early in the morning (right after dawn), we hear them. Recently, around 7 am, one swooped past us and left a feather. I collect feathers. I feel especially close to the Creator when I find certain feathers.
    It is very interesting to find out where others have heard them.

      While I don believe in a god, I think that that's a beautiful way to look at feathers, as a beautiful example of the intricate beauty of creation.

    I have barred owls in my backyard, and I really wanted to see them. Being the idiot I am, I grabbed a flashlight and pulled this video up and started playing the vocalizations. apparently one owl was interested because it swooped down two feet in front of me! It was terrifying, but amazing.
