Boat skip. So in order to do this trick, you need to take damage right before you touch the lava. Jump onto the cheep cheep right before touching the lava to take advantage of the invulnerability frames and submerge Mario. While Mario is submerged you will be able to swim. You can come up for air if you time it right. I thought it was random but apparently losing breath creates invulnerability frames. If you surface right after you lose a breath bar, you can surface and regain breath. You can also hop out of the lava during this time frame.
