I was saying to someone only the other day I should have a decanter of sherry to offer people when they visit like in Frasier. I got a muted response so I explained what happens and gave them some homework. Did you know? The name "Sherry", called in Spanish "Jerez" is a wine produced in the city of Jerez de la Frontera (hence the name), in the South of Spain.

I can tell you from experience that it's complicated, aromatic, and has the feel of a finely blended whisky tempered by a fabulous eau de vie. Or you can always try sake at a good sushi restaurant for a decent approximate. I recommend honjozu sake for beginners
Sherry comes in many varieties, from dry to cloyingly sweet, with lots of choices between those extremes. Maybe you can find a sherry tasting somewhere.
@@alejandrolevesque7024 That's because what you drank sounds like a cream sherry, heavily sweetened and fortified to the consistency of a dessert wine. An oloroso is less viscous while remaining sweet - though not as sweet as a cream - and an amontillado is semi-sweet like a rough red Konkan port wine. A fino is completely dry with a rough finish and aftertaste. I recommend amontillado for beginners. Or you can acclimatise with red Konkani port wine from Goa and graduate to Marsala before you get to the big leagues.
@@pranabpant3764 I appreciate the detailed breakdown. I mainly drink chianti and bordeaux so the sherry was quite a shock lol. I bought it on a whim without doing any research so I didn't know these distinctions. Maybe I'll give it another chance with some amontillado. Thanks!
Sherry is a fortified wine. It was invented by the Spanish Navy in the 1500s when they noticed that the casks of wine they used as a drink ration went bad in the tropics. So they added in brandy. The extra alcohol prevented it from going off. Then they noticed that Sherry that had been through the Carribean tasted better when it got back to Spain. Thus a new industry was born: adding brandy to wine, then ageing it all in hot glasshouses to simulate a Carribbean climate.

I tried it because of the show and it's disgusting. Extremely sweet and the consistency of cough syrup.
