GROSS 70-Year-Old Juice-O-Mat Juicer Perfect Restoration from the ATOMIC AGE!

    This juicer is from the early 1950s and in the style of the Atomic Age. It looks like it came right out of the Jetsons. The top of the juicer was badly frosted with scratches and took a long time to make it look nice again. In the process, I sanded/polished though most of the original chrome - because of this, I’ll never be able to get it to a mirror finish. I got close though.

    My mother-in-law gave me the same juicer in the box! She received it as a wedding present. Mine is not painted but has a chrome finish. She always used frozen juice and having 9 kids I think that was the easier option. I use it often, when I find small orange are on sale. Large ones are hard to process, the navel oranges have thick peels also making it difficult. I did grease it with a food grade lub made for kitchen tools. Thank you for the video, I found it very helpful. I will get my dremil out for a deep clean and lub next time.

    It is harder to squeeze oranges now than it was in 1948 because orange had thinner skins then. The orange you used was bred, if that is the correct word, to have thick skin so that they are less likely to be damaged during shipping. I learned this at the Sarasota County Fair years ago. People only drank a tiny "juice" glass of orange juice every morning. Now, we drink processed orange juice in big glasses. In 1948, orange juice was squeezed from real oranges before breakfast. Love the video and your channel.

    What kind of metal polish did you use on the aluminum juice catcher that was so t
    oxidized? Although you need to polish it up, and I need to get mine better-looking, do you think this polish is what made the orange juice taste so bad? In other words, the juice o matic looks better having been metal polished but it puts a taste into the juice that touches the juice catcher. What is the name of the polish you used for the oxidized juice catcher, but I am a little hesitant to use it if it affects the juice's taste. What do you think?

    • @StevensFix
      @StevensFix  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Skaytn! Thank you for your comment! The polish I used is called Autosol. But any good chrome/aluminum polish should work. The reason for the bad taste was that I didn't wash it before using it to make orange juice. Had I washed it, it would have been fine. Also, the metal - as I found out - is not dishwasher safe. So be careful after you restore your juicer to only ever wash it by hand. Cheers!

      Hi Z Worm! Thank you for your comment. You're very right! I bough oranges based on what would look good on camera and not for what would fit. By the time I realised it, it was in the middle of filming so I was too far. Cheers! :)

      Hi charleen heath! Thank you for your comment. You are right about the metal polish - I didn't clean it first for the video but the polish has since been washed off. The grease is only in the gears and can't actually make contact to anything you put in the juicer. Cheers! :)

    You would have achieved greater results if #1 you had used juicing oranges #2 had cleaned the juicer with hot soapy water to get the metal polish taste out and #3 had used food grade grease on the moving parts. Unbeknownst to most people there is a great deal of difference between juicing oranges and oranges that are meant to be peeled and eaten like mineola oranges. Juicing oranges have a much thinner skin which makes them easy to juice and they yield a shit ton more juice than the one you had used. Try it out and you'll see what I mean. If you go to your market just ask for a bag of juicing oranges, they're very cheap and the juice tastes much better. Anyway you're welcome 😁😁😁

    Beautiful restoration! But IMHO, an absolute nonsense of a product. You'd probably get better results with a handheld reamer. Yes, I know this is from 70 years ago hence me comparing it to a handheld reamer and not a slow-juicer or some other similar modern device.
