A couple of years ago I drove to Florida for a few days vacation and we passed an orange grove that had a store in front and we bought some fresh squeezed juice and holy cow, that was the absolute best juice that I ever had. It had a a powerful orange oil effect that really cleaned your palate and you felt its energy coursing through you. I wish I had access to it now!

John, Seeing the glass juicers I was transported back to being at home in the 1960s and squeezing lemons for pancakes on shrove Tuesday. Great memories and feel free to talk about anything as you have inherited Uncle Harry's ability to keep us all spellbound.

Scout must have finally opened his Tool Museum, I see a couple tour buses pulled up outside.
I had forgotten about it until just now but we had a an electric orange juicer when I was a kid, as I recall you pressed the orange on top and it activated the switch and started spinning.......If you want to see how long OJ sits around in vats (with flavor packs added) then sold as fresh watch the CBC News video titled ~ *How "premium" orange juice is really made (CBC Marketplace).*
Fresh fruit is a totally different thing from canned, juiced or most stuff sold in stores.
By far the best thing I ever smelled in my life was a ripe (somewhat overripe) peach orchard on this Old Lady's Farm when I took my Grandmother there to visit her friend.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Reminiscing is something we probably all need to do a little more, always move forward but don't forget to look back, it's a much needed and worthy pursuit. The world has changed a lot in our short lifetimes, it's good to stop and reflect and relive sometimes.
I think we need an old scoutmaster to put together a jamboree so we can all get together squeeze oranges and crank out some homemade ice cream.

We still have and use both an electric orange squeezer from the 60's I believe as well as a manual one from the 70's. When I drink OJ from a container it always gives me heart burn - whereas fresh squeezed never does. Yours is a real classic!!

Fresh squeezed juice is very common over here! We have a plastic squeezer like those glass ones, but it has cutouts to let the juice drain to a container at the bottom. After I started watching you I started to pay more attention to antique glassware, and those old glass squeezer are, indeed, really pretty! Uncle Harry has nothing on you. Everything you talk about is interesting. I enjoyed the video. We only had the glass bowl press. Remember the taste. I don't have one now. I think I need one. Press some for my son. My mom collected stamps at our grocery store to get dishes and silverware. The problem was we never had a lot of money so we didn't buy a lot very fast. She would get two or three pieces then they would change to something else. Living at home I always remember miss matched sets. Love the memories. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks

I'm a child of the 60's so we "advanced" to frozen orange juice by then. Love it! Fresh squeezed orange juice is pretty easy to come by here in Central Florida. At my last house, I had a few orange trees in the yard, and this house I have several orange groves within a 10-minute drive. The form and function of your mom's juicer are perfect, a lot of thought went into it. I will have to keep my eye out for one, sure beats doing it by hand!

When my mother passed away I was clearing out the house not only did she have a setting st of 8 in the kitchen but she had collected a matching extra 16 sets that she stored in the basement in case any broke. I gave them away. to goodwill.

Another great video! I love seeing the old dish and cup. I think my great uncle had those cups. The movie theater plates remind of a movie where the women got into a fight over getting a gravy boat at the movies. It was like a Gene Shepherd kind of thing. Funny movie, but I can't remember what it was called. Your dish also reminded me of getting plates in the supermarket and encyclopedias. The still did that at the Food Town and A&P back in the 80's. My mom always seemed to get 2-3 pieces and then she gave up. Great stuff!

That orange press is so pretty. To big for a tiny kitchen like mine, we have a vintage glass one, as you say they work just fine.
I told you before about my grandfather being a truckdriver. He drove barrels of the concentrate that's used to make the orange juice you buy in the supermarkets for quite some time. I think the boats with those barrels came from South America too because sometimes there would be big spiders traveling along in the shipment, wich the forklift drivers would try to squash with the forks of the forklift (man does my job sound boring now). Anyways sometimes a barrel would be squeezed while being moved, causing it to pop open or crack, and that concentrate would leak out. Now you didn't wanna get it on you because it is so sour (like acid) it will burn trough stuff, like skin and clothes.
Thank you for your sharing your story, brought back some nice memories here too as you can see!

Frozen OJ was a savior for people who couldn't get oranges outside major areas like NY, and it came about in full force in the 50s. My grandma used to buy it a lot. I should pick up some.
Rival used to make a lot of things. I have a handcranked meat slicer they made and it's got that same bright smooth style to it. I think I paid 15$ for it. The problem with these gadgets I find is this: while they make the processing easy, the cleanup is a major hassle! Works if you have a whole party to make OJ or sandwiches for, but for a little bit on a weekend maybe the simple ones work well enough.

Back in the 50's fresh squeezed was your only choice. Somewhere in the 60's suddenly the frozen concentrate became the rage, and honestly it was pretty good, more convenient, but not quite the same. Somewhere along the way the corporate retail stuff came along and folks lost interest in OJ.

I live in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Lots and lots of orchards around here. My grandpa had one so we always had fresh squeezed. From concentrate is awful.
However - I don't think those oranges you have are thin skin. They look like small navel oranges, because, well - they had a navel and the skin looked pretty thick.
    Still, way better than concentrate.

Hi Ben- Unfortunately it’s not Orange season here right now and my choices were limited. I think these oranges were a seedless hybrid, our Naval Oranges have a very thick dimples skin- Easy peeling but not super juicy. I’ll keep looking! 😃👍

The Chinese do a copy of that juicer not so elegant and not so strong, it bends if you put to much pressure on the lever.
