Hello from Montreal ! My parents were married in 1952 .... my mother got this same juice-o-mat as a gift ..... I am still using it today.... I looks "almost" new .... for I cant tell you since 1952 how much oranges, lemons and grapefuit it juices! Have a great day ! (by the way I have the ice crusher also) :-)
In the time you are talking about, they had special glasses for juice, which were 4 oz. Only took a few oranges for that. The current serving of juice in an 8 oz. or larger glass, takes well in excess of a half dozen oranges!
I have that same juicer! One of my neighbors had set it out on the curb with a bunch of other stuff with a "free" sign in front of all the stuff. I love mine!
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor It's from this last season and it's called 'Die Card or Card Trying'. It's not entirely about Bob's vintage juicer obsession, but their relationship certainly permeates the story!
My family has a red one with the tilt top and we used it all the time as kids to juice oranges, lemons, and smaller grapefruits 👍🏻 I found a chrome one at an antique store recently, so now me and my husband have one! I juice limes for margaritas with it 😊
What I like in those 50’s “machines” is that they are made from every kind of metal which means they are very durable and strong, and if they are not in good condition, you can restore/paint them with ease! Not some crappy plastic but metal, love it! :)
When I bought my vintage mobile home last year, I was going through the cabinets. The home came with a juice o matic. I love it. However yes if you want a full glass of oj, you need several oranges. It makes me think of the I Love Lucy shows where she serves these itty bitty orange juice in small small glasses at breakfast. Now we know why. Lol I also have my juicer that goes on my sunbeam mixer, which I love too. If I am just making something small I use juice o matic. If I need lots of juice, I use sunbeam.
Back in the day you would go out back and picked oranges/lemons off the tree. A little elbow grease and you have fresh juice every morning. Such a beautiful dress too.
I just bought a Zulay citrus juicer. It is exactly the same concept as the Juice o Mat. The removable pieces are identical! It handles grapefruit with no problem. They suggest juicing pomegranates with it as well. Best part about it is Hubby digs it and squeezes dozens of citrus for me. Loved this vintage gadget review.
If you use the handheld juicer, you can get more juice (but it is a little harder) if you put the lemon or lime upside down so that when you squeeze it, it turns inside out. You get a lot more juice from it. Someone showed me that trick. I love the juice-o-mat! Very cool!
I wish I lived near you. We would be BFFs. Between the cats, vintage stuff and a history of NKOTB love.. our friendship would be epic. Have a wonderful weekend!
Your style of juicer is perfect for getting out all of the juice possible ,but you will need to cut things like grapefruit in to smaller sections for it to work on them.
If you are wanting to make fresh squeezed orange juice to drink you would use a bag of juice oranges that are way more juice and roll them between your palm and counter top to release maximum juice and oils before using them.
When my friend’s mom passed away I got her juice o mat. It’s this exact model and lives proudly on my counter. It’s gets a workout from my lemon and lime trees.
Your kitchen cabinets remind me of my sister’s kitchen. It was built in 1940. She is the second owner and we knew the original owners / builder for many years. She has a well built country house that has some nice Art Deco touches in the kitchen.
So fun when I see a new video posted by our sweet Laci Fay! Just a little trick, if you roll the fruit around on the counter pushing down with your palm, it helps free the juice.
I found out about Laci in a video and ever since I saw it, it made me enjoy 1950’s style even more! It’s amazing how 1950 is pure and adorable. Things these days are way different lol. (I’m in Vermont and I founda oven where I’m staying. It’s a tiny stove\oven that is the Dixie brand. It must be a MCM which was probably made in the 60’s or 70’s.)
I have a juice o mat and also a can o mat can opener! It’s very atomic style and is so cool! I need to get it hung up on a wall or cabinet so I can use it.
That's one of my fave things about living in Florida (there's not many things; it's a short list haha)! I had orange and lemon trees in my backyard of my house 10, 15 years ago. I've moved since but, in my next house, I for sure want citrus trees again.
It's amazing how much sturdier kitchen appliances were back in the day. My Mom even still has some of her appliances from the 70's in avocado green. LOL. I don't think any of my appliances lasted more than 10 years. (unless I didn't use it....I have a sorbee maker still in the box that I bought when the kids were little. They're teenagers now. LOL)
Pro tip: Before you slice your citrus, roll the citrus with some firm pressure before you slice THEN put it in your Juice O-Mat. It will not take hardly any pressure at all to juice.
I use a recipe for a carrot and raisin salad recipe that calls for lemon, lime and orange juice (instead of mayo). This kind of gadget would come in super handy for that. Your gadget reviews are always so good.
We had one if those ice crushers adhered to a kitchen cupboard growing up. It gave you a little more traction but was still hard to use. Have a great day. Blessings-Judith 🎭🎵
I was so lucky that I found the sleek 1950s chrome version (sleek like a 50"s car) which is a little heavier duty so I seem to need to push less. The top tips back when opened so you can use bigger fruits-- I was even able to do grapefruits. It keeps seeds out of the juice which empties into a fitted cup with a spout. You can just rinse it to clean. Since I have hand and wrist injuries I use mine all the time. If you can find one, grab it!

I have exact same models of both the Ice and Juice•O•Mat except mine is red, I got them both at the same estate sale for $10 and I love and use the juice o mat quite often! When I make orange juice using a 1950s anchor hocking juice glass it takes about 2 whole oranges for a full glass.
I have a red juice-o-mat and a red can-o-mat. My juicer is a little different then yours and it has a built in cup to catch the juice. I have never used it. The can-o-mat is the best can opener. Much better then the garbage they make today. You just need to keep it clean.
