I'm working towards sub-20 mins... giving it a go on Monday! Tips I've used for myself: increase impact slowly, ie taking mileage, speed and surface into account.

Actually I have experience of both as I am British but now live in Canada. If you overdress in -20 it can be very hot especially if there is no wind but at least you don't get as wet and cold as you would do in England. Pbs however are not generally achievable until about April so you have to keep track of your best 'Snow time" during the winter. It is certainly too dangerous to try to run fast especially when there can be ice under fresh snow

33 minutes is my goal, and (hopefully) 31 by March since that will be when I run my first official 5K event. I'm at 37:17 right now, have only run 5K twice in my life. Should be 3rd time tomorrow, I have a 45 minute run ahead of me as part of my training plan.

I have been running for approximately 8 weeks now and did my first 5 km today. You guys have been such great inspiration.
By using advice from your videos and buying a Garmin watch to follow my progress and pace, I did the 5K a 26:31.
Now I need to do some of the speed work, rest, strength exercises etc... Now that I have turned 40, it could be fun to see what 2 or 3 training seasons a week could do for my 5K time and feel.

Training for Dublin and Cork marathons, meant no 'quick' parkruns for most of the year. Week after Dublin, I let the horses off the reins and ran my local Donabate PR in 24-40, my PB is 23-03. Have always wanted to hit 22-30 (which would get my age grading closer to 65%) , my quickest 5K is 22-56, so fingers crossed I'll get close.
I reckon Sarah will get closer, it's been brilliant watching her progression as a 'one of us' runner and see her times come down.

I am basically doing the same challenge. This past year I just turned 50 years old, and I just got back into running. During the week of my 50th birthday I challenge myself to run 50 miles. It was difficult, butI did achieve my goal. Now I have set January to try and run a 5k under 21. I will be shaving a little more time off than these two, but I really have yet to run a 5k all out. Good luck to all, and I think Sarah will win.

Dulwich is the fastest 5k I've done so far.
I ran a 22:19 Parkrun there last Saturday. My previous PB was 24:54 at Gloucester City Parkrun the week before.

Well done Sarah & Mo. I have fond memories of Dulwich parkrun where I set my parkrun PB of 20.19 in November 2013. I got close to that on a couple of occasions (20.21 in April 2015 and an unofficial 20.22 in 2019 when I lost my barcode. Have suffered a number of injury niggles over past 5 years but all OK now so will be heading over to Dulwich next month to see what I can do. Got one sub 21 parkun last year(1st year running) but kept having horrendous achilles pain everytime i tried to go hard at 5k,figured at my age (49) i was more suited to slower longer distance.A by product of proper structured training for bath half (pb at 1hr 42) inc some speedwork seems to be that my parkrun time has got better. Have now done 5 sub 21's running including last 2 at PB. This morning at 20:20,so got to be targeting sub 20 soon, not sure about Jan but hopefully at some point next year! certainly wont be a PB next week as i make it a habit to volunteer the following week after i PB!

    Awesome idea! ... sort of...
I despise winter running too, but I have to say, we have much better reason to, than you do.
We get -30C weather here from January through March and the snow has already started.
We'll likely be buried under snow and ice from now until then, as well; sometimes as much as 6' or more.
So, I got my Parkrun PB two weeks ago, knocking another 7 seconds off my previous PB, down to 24:12, but setting time goals right now is not even remotely possible.
With the extreme cold, snow, ice and pitch black weather from 4:30PM until 7:30AM, I'm lucky if I even get out to run, let alone a decent time.
By comparison, my Parkrun today was 27:24.
So, improving performance between now and April, or even May, is just not going to happen.
What could our goal here be then?
How about, getting out to run a 5K once/week.
Yeah, it really is THAT bad.
    I hate winter.

That means I also have to work on my speed and hills (that I have lots of here where I live), in addition to distance. Cheers from Canada! That's not winter and that challenge is nearly impossible here unless you have access to indoor tracks. It was "feels like -8C" due to the wind in negative temperatures when I was running 2 days ago. The parkrun got cancelled today. There is so much snow on the ground that the park must be barely walkable and certainly not runnable. End of January, temperatures could be in the -20C or less. That's not something my lungs can use for a PB. Essentially, I hope to be doing enough base training to go for a 5k PB as soon as spring settles in and have started cross-training on indoor rollers with my bike while watching the snow fall yesterday.

5 Km is still a long distance, you can do well even if you run in a popular race with lots of people around you. Take it easy for the first 1-2 Km, then start pushing harder each Km after Km 2,5 and go all out for the last 1 Km. You'll be fresh to really fly, so don''t worry if your first 2 Km are slower than you'd like. You can recover from a slow start but you cannot recover from a too fast start.

Ok my target is 9 weeks out sub 21. Ran a 5k event last week 22:12. As a 64 yo that will be a big step forward for next season. If I am really lucky I will finish with in seconds of Sarah. 😊

My PB is 24:56 during a 10km race. It's funny how easy It was.... But on the actual 5K race a month later I couldn't repeat it, just 25:06. :) But most of my workouts were at threshold pace so this make sense I guess. It's strange that I am able to run 1Km under 4min, but after 4min I get tired so fast .... Anyone with the same problem? I thought 4:30min/km 5K pace should be easy for me, but no, it feels like sprinting after 2km ... Running 21min 5K is very good, good job.

Well, iam nearly 60,started running 2.5 months ago and done 5 hilly parkruns.
    Everytime a PB(last one 28 min).
Question is,when will times tail off?

    • @Stevenc1984
      @Stevenc1984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Firstly that's a great time, it gives you an age grading of around 56%. On average by just running regularly you'll improve for at least 2 years. Not to say you'll be faster each time and I'd encourage running mostly at an easy pace and not 'racing hard' too often, but if you can avoid injuries and consistently log the miles you'll be capable of running much faster in 2 years time.

I'm 61 and been running regularly for 2 years but with no real structure just doing my own thing really until 7 months ago. Have avoided hard intervals as don't want to risk injury, using parkrun as my speed workout and one progression run per week. Now my parkrun 5k time is 21:43. I built my mileage gradually to around 28/30 miles a week running 5 days. Every run except parkrun and progression run is at easy pace. This worked for me, hope this encourages you, being similar age, and you will progress, just be patient and enjoy your running. Just remember running a fast time won't necessarily be an entirely pleasant experience, mind over matter and all that. Good luck.

My 5k goal is 27 minutes. Right now, I’m running it at 31 minutes but does anyone else feel like the humidity effects your running performance? I live in Florida, so I’m always looking at the humidity and feel lucky if it’s less than 75%. If the humidity is less than 70%, my time is better.
