never been prouder of watching you all these years than when you called Dougherty "Admiral Ackbar" from star wars. you've become such a big nerd and I love to see it!!
Both Riker and Picard have 2 "maneuvers" one is Starfleet related, one is a character habit. Starfleet Picard Maneuver is the short distance warp jump. His personal one was how Patrick Stewart tugged at his tunic. For Riker the one Geordi suggests in this movie. The other is how Jonathan Frakes swings his leg over the back of a chair to sit.
The fact there's suddenly no chemistry between Worf and Troi is something explained in DS9, he was a main character at this point and had another relationship going at this time.
Man I remember when this came out and a lot of people complained that it was a "long episode" but honestly, with the way movies have gone, this is such a refreshing rewatch.
Of all the TNG movies this one has the spirit of the series, a solid ethical question at its core. The villians enticing the Federation to help them add a layer missing from other mustache twirling baddies from other films.
RIP Stephanie Niznik, the helm officer in here. The mention of "ketricell white", was a big reference to the Dominion war shown in season 7, Deep Space 9 series.
@stevenkaye1625 I agree. Sometimes the secondary characters have an impact. Although he is still going strong the actor who played Lt Hawk in First Contact is another actor who I'd like to have seen more of as he was good.
"Some of the darkest chapters in the history of my world involved the forced relocation of a small group of people to satisfy the demands of a large one." Too true. ❤
they really only did a worf / troi romantic interest in 3 episodes at the end of next gen. parallels, eye of the beholder and all good things, the entire rest of the time, trio and riker are in an off-again will-they/ won't-they? situation, including riker being upset with Worf that tori died in all-good-things.
Yep, by this stage it had been four and a half years since the last episode of Next Gen, and within that time Worf had gone on to accumulate another three years worth of further adventures and character development over on DS9. The universe keeps rolling on behind the scenes in the years between films.
Yeah Cassie needs to really see DS9, although I would say that the movies post Generations don't really require you to have seen it, other than knowing that DS9 and the Defiant exist.
After First Contact, I understood why people were at least somewhat disappointed in this one. But I really liked it, cheese and all. It felt like a long episode and just left me feeling fairly happy. I guess today we'd call it a vibe.
'A long episode' is exactly how I've always described this film too. It may not have matched the quality of First Contact, but it lived up to core vibes of TNG.
If you were a TNG fan, but weren't a DS9 fan and didn't already see the hints at darker cracks in the federation, it could also be a little jarring from a tone perspective...
I think that's the problem. "We" didn't want a long episode, we wanted a feature length film, something extra. First Contact delivered on this in spades. I liked Insurrection when I saw it in the theater, but there was also a sense of disappointment when it failed to come close to my expectations.
@@TheSwordOfTheJedi-u2pI personally liked seeing it in the theater precisely because it felt like a bigger episode with a movie budget. That being said, Beverly and Deanna got a little shafted in their participation in the script…
I always liked Insurrection too. And Cassie's absolutely right both how it felt like an oversized TV episode, and also on the sense of fun everybody seemed to be having filming this.
I like it. It's a really nice palette cleanser from the big action hero type stuff of First Contact. Worst criticism is that it feels like an extended episode of the TV show rather than a "human race is at stake" blockbuster.
@@Banterbear I mean, being an extended episode of the TV show isn't the worst thing you could ever say about a Star Trek film. I've always appreciated this movie for that.
The thing about Dougherty that pissed me off was that he was going to reduce an infinite natural resource to a finite one. It's obscenely shortsighted.
Frakes and Sirtis were huge Riker/Troi shippers. They went out of their way to try and keep the relationship alive (successfully, as you'll see in the next film).
Excalibur is an awesome 80's King Arthur flick that has a great early Patrick Stewart performance as well as Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne & Helen Miren that's well worth a watch for a P Stewart fan IMO
I love Excalibur. Costumes, scenery and horsemanship are all incredible. My favorite scene is after Arthur recovers from his illness that made England suffer to, but as he and the knights of the round table ride the dead grass turns green and the fruit trees bloom and a cascade of white and pink petals fall as they pass. The music for that scene is perfectly matched; it's O Fortuna from Carmina Burana and makes me want to jump on a horse and ride with him to fight Mordred! This is a link to the orchard O Fortuna scene. Enjoy! th-cam.com/video/nthojvLZoNY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0rSMaxeL3c9wUkE1
Things I like about this movie: 1) HMS Pinafore 2) Diplomatic dinner scene 3) "Yuck!" scene 4) Riker and Troi FINALLY being able to get together 5) "Definitely feeling aggressive tendencies, sir!" 6) Anij slows time 7) Design of the So'na ships/transporter drones 8) "Dougherty out." 9) "How many people does it take, Admiral?!" 10) Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham) screaming his head off 11) La Forge seeing a sunset 12) Worf: He would 13) "We're getting too old for this." Do these things make up for the more groan inducing moments and make this a great movie? Not really, but IMO even below average Trek can still be enjoyable. On to Nemesis!
When Ruafo and his crew were getting ready to fire the weapon and were covered by an odd yellow light, that was them being transported to the holoship.
I imagine that, having only watched a few episodes, Cassie is used to people beaming to/from a transporter booth. She might not be familiar with site-to-site transport.
@@Talius10 Then again, the movie showed batches of people being transported from the surface when they tried to flee. It's just that with Ruafo and his crew we saw how the transportation looks from the perspective of the one being transported, i.e. everything brightening for a moment and fading to the new location.
The fact that it felt like a long TNG episode is why this movie is put down in the bottom parts of most people’s lists. But honestly, I love this one because it feels like a TNG episode.
They rob us of Picard marching through the halls to the chambers of the Federations throwing opening doors. An delivering one almighty smackdown speech to the Federation Council.
@@jaredf6205 Negative. Maybe the first two seasons could be done that way, except for season two's three part opener, but from season 3 onward, if one doesn't watch every episode, they'll find themselves missing out on far too much and finding themselves lost.
@@jaredf6205 You do lose some of the overarching development with the Dominion and the Prophets, but you can still follow the overall storyline. DS9 is some of the best sci-fi to ever grace TV, imo. But it is a bit darker because we're dealing with other empires that aren't used to the UFP benevolence, fanatical religion, and recovering from a genocide. That's what makes it great in my mind but to each their own. While every sci-fi fan should watch it, it's harder to recommend to reactors because it's 173 episodes, and they don't always do well on the algorithm of youtube. Even if the character arcs and development are the best Trek has ever produced.
Some of the saddest moments in history have been the forced relocation of a small group of people to satisfy the desire of the larger. Truer words have never been said.
While this is certainly true, i still think that in THIS artificially created scenrio in Insurrection, the prospect of having an unlimited access to a cure for alle dieases in the world (think about cancer, aids, ebola and co.) could outweight the happiness (and also artificial generated immortalitiy) of this small hippie commune.
@@Ferox2121 Maybe something considering, but a slippery slope. To what extend can this principle be extended, so long one side of the coin has an advantage, or it can be argued it will have a clear future advantage. Letting that aside, if you allow society to follow this line of reasoning, how will society keep the morality to judge when it has gone to far. Is the work of Unit 731 justifiable if enough people in the next few hundreds of years can be saved based on the experiments they performed, or will it remain a crime against humanity forever? No necessary arguing against this side, but there is a reason why this franchise (Gene Roddenberry) adopted such (possibly overly) high principles in the first place, because it is also a franchise that can magic tech all bad things away if given enough time, or could claim the technology to solve the bad things is available the next star they will explore, or the next one, etc. DS9 tried to explore the edges a bit more, when the situation is bad enough to waver from the core principles, and I think this movie was a bit of a counter against it. (by also acknowledging that Dougherty was trying to pull the Son'a away from the Dominion, but DS9 explored this so much better with Damar and the Cardassion Union). Having an cartoonly evil villain, especially when referencing to the grey-scale universe of DS9, makes this a very artificial and not to interesting dilemma.
@@RichO1701eNewer movies often try to put their message before story. The old shows always had the adventure first, on second watch you realized the connections to your own world. And comments on sensitive issues often were left ambiguous, not trying to push it into one direction, how right it may have looked. That wasn't 'woke', just good original and inspirational storytelling. And when it wasn't liked as much, the producers didn't blame the audience ...
Br'er Rabbit (short for Brother Rabbit) wasn't from Winnie the Pooh. He's from old folklore, adapted into Uncle Remus stories. He was a trickster rabbit. There were many Brer Rabbit stories, the most remembered on being Brer Rabbit and the Briar patch. Where he convinced his enemies that the worst punishment they could give him would be to throw him in the briar patch, by begging them not to. When it was actually right where he wanted to be.
Yep! It's in the Disney movie "Song of the South" if you can still find it anywhere. And was the main story line in the original Splash Mountain at Disneyland before that got axed.
Love this movie. The way people have always talked about it, you'd think by now I could go into a rewatch of it without wondering if this is the time I'm finally gonna see what everyone hates about it, that suddenly all the cracks will be obvious to me, but no. No, every time I just reaffirm how much it feels like this one was made for people like me. Looks like Star Trek, feels like Star Trek, has all the elements I expect from Star Trek. I concede that First Contact is probably a more crowd-pleasing film, but Insurrection is undistilled Trek to my mind.
It's like the motion picture. It lacks some movie-esque quality but just as trek it's pretty solid. Would have been a superb 2 parter just ok as a movie but I never got the hate.
Some of the humor is a bit forced, but that's in keeping with the series. I think people just have a tendency to let expectations ruin their enjoyment of things.
I don’t care what anybody says I Absolutely love this one. “Make sure to take time to play. Every day. “ I’m 50 and I still do frisbee , golf , games . !!!
This is my favorite of the Next Generation films for the space action, music score, comedy, and character moments. I love seeing Riker & Deana getting together in this film again.
It's a weird thing, but this one gets so much better with rewatches. I was disappointed like so many others when it came out, but now I love it!!! Thanks for a good reaction :)
For me, it was the first ST movie i saw in theaters. My parents were staunch OS fans and hated anything TNG. So when they were divorcing, my great-grandparents knew I liked these kinds of things, so my great-grandfather took me to see this the week it came out.
37:44 They DID transport them all to the holoship. That was the bright light that Ruafu said "What was that?" and they didn't feel it because they were also in the middle of a battle.
Now I remember where I've heard Anjii's voice! She's the actress who played Mother Gothel in "Tangled"! OMG! Two movies, and her character is still obsessed with staying young!
Yeah, both Worf and Riker have given the order for ramming speed previously. Fortunately, something always manages to stop them actually colliding. Though, I gotta say, as a maneuver, it doesn't turn out to be as effective as you'd think it would be for vessels that can go faster than light.
I know this movie is one of the lower rated TNG films, but it's one of my favorites, I really like it. Cool characters, solid story, it is easily the one I've personally watch the most times over the years. There is something about it that I just like to give it a viewing any time it happens to be running on a streaming channel I have.
This movie came out around the time Worf got married on Star Trek Deep Space Nine so Troi and Riker were both free to finally continue their relationship.
First Contact simply is an incredibly tough act to follow. I think that alone explains a lot of the dissatisfaction some fans felt with this movie. In hindsight we could also see it as a welcome change of pace. A bit of a slower burn than we had before. But it's certainly not a bad movie. And it's the last Star Trek movie I used to own on VHS. 😅
No, the Br'er Rabbit reference wasn't to Winnie the Pooh. It was to "Song of the South" if you want a movie but ultimately it refers to the folk tales collected as being told by the fictional "Uncle Remus." Br'er (Brother) Rabbit tricked Br'er Fox into throwing him into the Briar Patch, a thicket of sharp thorns that was a natural hideout for rabbits.
Insurrection is a fun movie. The more you watch it, the more the "little things" stick out but compared to modern Trek it's still high art. I won't say anything about Nemesis as its better to go in with no expectations but I'm very curious to see your reaction to that. I truly hope you'll jump ahead to Star Trek: Picard (Season 3, in particular) as it's a far better sendoff to the TNG crew and it's packed with a lot of references you'll definitely enjoy. Hope your voice heals up soon, though I kinda agree with whoever said they dug the raspy voice, it does kinda suit you. 🙂
Bre'er Rabbit is a reference to an old Disney movie that was removed from circulation in the 1990s. It is called "Song Of the South" and featured a beloved character called Uncle Remus. The movie was frowned upon because it showed Uncle Remus as a happy character, though he was enslaved. Problematic in modern times.
What's missing between Deanna Troi and Worf is simply time apart. Worf had been assigned to Deep Space 9 after the end of TNG, and had some shenanigans of his own (of which I will not utter here). This was why he wasn't so heartbroken by the rekindling of Deanna and Will Riker.
Not after TNG, but actually after Generations since the Enterprise D was destroyed. So since Worf was in limbo, then he got assigned to DS9. Generations was set during season 3 of DS9, and worf arrives in season 4 of DS9.
If I recall correctly, you haven't watched Deep Space 9 - This show ran in parallel to TNG and Voyager (closer to the end of TNG's run) You missed a lot concerning Worf's character progression. A lot happened after his relationship with Deanna. Their are also some references that you didn't catch about the Federation's various wars that happened in Deep Space 9 and Voyager -- Dominion and the Borg... quite interesting - both were long shows - 7 seasons, 25+ episodes each season - You got a lot of work ahead of ya... Fun!
Hell No. After she watches Nemesis, she should watch Picard Season 3 and that’ll be it. DS9, Voyager have their moments but they are not worth the time investment.
Nowadays people don't watch these great shows anymore. Nowadays people only want mini-series with a maximum of 12 episodes. I think she's only seen 4 or 5 episodes from each season of TNG or so.
I love to see you watching classics: gone with the wind, Maltese falcone, spellbound, notorious, anastasia (1958), cat on a hot tin roof, I want to live, Kramer vs Kramer, two Popes, bridge of spies...
I actually REALLY love the design of that Scout Ship Data is flying. I rank it in the top 5 along with The Delta Flyer design. Although I believe The Scout Ship as just a couple meters longer, The Delta Flyer - I THINK - is wider and larger in height.
Plot twist: Ru'afo was not killed when the collector blew up. He managed to activate a time-travel escape device that catapulted him back to Earth's 18th century, where he assumed the identity of the Viennese Court Composer Salieri, and was later credited (at least in subsequent works of fiction) of killing Mozart.
“It felt like a long episode of TNG” is just about the most common reaction to this movie. Most people didn’t like it because they wanted a first contact type blockbuster sort of excitement. I’ll admit I felt it was a bit slow when it first came out but the humor and action were good. In all the years since I have actually grown to enjoy it more and more. It kind of has the most tng vibe of them all. Picard was the most principled man in all of Star Trek, so it was very fitting for him to take off his rank and leave to help these people. I will say rewatching this it is so obviously a very turn of the century movie lol coming out at the very end of 1998, it definitely had the feel with the early but still decent cgi work and just down to the camera angles and things. Although I like First Contact’s music overall better, this movie definitely had a much deeper/bolder audio mix. At some point you should do a sound track reaction and start with old trek and move forward with release date. I think you’ll notice a lot of themes get reused and reworked into each new movie. It’s interesting to hear the familiar notes.
I don't think the problem is that people needed a "blockbuster," exactly, if that means something full of flashy action set pieces. Undiscovered Country is a lot of people's favorite or second-favorite Trek movie, and that's an extremely talky political thriller. But they DO expect something that feels bigger and more consequential than a middling two-parter out of a feature film.
A bit of trivia: Actress Donna Murphy, who portrays Anij - the woman (who can't swim) who connects with Pickard - is the voice and singer playing the character Mother Gothel in the animated film "Tangled."
It definitely has interesting elements, but I still like Generations and First Contact way better. It's better than Nemesis though (which I consider the worst overall Star Trek movie).
I never knew why this movie was disliked so much, I feel like it fits right in. Not every movie has to put the fate of the universe at stake (that just leads to the numbness of the Avengers frenchise), sometimes 600 people is enough. Love the Baku soundtrack too.
6:35 that flirting between Deanna and Will was not in the script :) that was 100% Marina Sirtis flirting with Jonathan Frakes :)) 26:38 FYI Yes it is know as the Riker maneuver :) They even have it in the Star Trek Online game. I liked how Picard's love for the girl made time slow down long enough to save her :)) ( I think everybody wishes they could do that at some point in their lives ) 33:57 If you watch close you can see the bad guy actor's arm gets Dislocated at the shoulder and then snaps back.
To be fair, he only did it about half the time. Sometimes he found away around it, like in "Journey's End" where instead he arranged the colonists to give up their federation citizenship instead...
Song Of The South is a Disney movie that did not survive into our more enlightened time. In it, it told a couple of Br'er Rabbit stories (he was the protagonist, and Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear were the antagonists), he often hid in the briar patch. I have learned that Br'er Rabbit is a facet of Anansi (an African trickster god).
Yes, Uncle Remus stories (in which Brer Rabbit and Br'er Fox appeared first) do predate Song of the South, as they were African American folktales collected during Reconstruction, if memory serves.
5:32 Hey kids, it's Bernardo Gui! 19:36 File whatever protests you will, Cassie. By the time you do, this will all be done. 31:18 Tachyons are a theoretical particle that can only exist at supraliminal speeds (faster than light), so no worry about aiming.
This movie just felt to me like an extended episode of the series rather than a big movie event. Not that that's a terrible thing. Oh, I got to the end and Cassie said the same thing. :D But, the Enterprise E is always cinematic. Some of the best shots of it were definitely in this movie.
You really need to watch DS9. I think you'd love it. Enterprise too, though the first season is a little slow and the second season is rough, seasons three and four are fantastic.
This was my first Star Trek movie in the theater. Bought the soundtrack the day it came out. Still love this score. I have since seen every other movie first in theaters, then bought it on dvd. Currently have them all on Blu-ray.
Cassie, if you think that the Admiral looked familiar, you had seen him before. He was in Licence to Kill (1989); Timothy Dalton’s second and last outing as Bond.
I love this movie. It’s a fun adventure film. First contact is a thriller and this film isn’t and wasn’t meat to be a thriller, just a different kind of movie in the same franchise. You’re right, the humor works, and this movie has its heart in the right place. Great reaction 🖖
I bet you didn’t notice the song Picard started singing to get Data singing also is the same song that Salah sings when Miriam kisses him at the dock in Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
I noticed she didn't flinch at "Gilbert and Sullivan". Didn't this channel watch Chariots of Fire? Perhaps she missed the brief 'Mikado' sequence in there. That was one of the best plays I ever went to see. Right up there with 'Phantom of the Opera'.
Good catch. John Rhys-Davies (Salah) was in "I, Claudius" with Patrick Stewart in 1977, episodes 6 and 7 which are here on YT. Both played great EVIL characters.
Be'er Rabbit is a folk character from stories that were told by African Americans in the Southern US and the Caribbean. He is a trickster who used wits instead of brawn. Be'er Rabbit and the briar patch refers to a story titled "The Tar Baby" where he uses a briar patch to get out of trouble.
The Sona that helped Picard stop Ru'afo was played by Gregg Henry. Even knowing it is him, I still can't tell it is him. He is a great character actor. He had a small role in Guardians of the Galaxy, as Star Lord's uncle.
First Contact will stand as the best TNG movie which is why Insurrection and Nemesis were disappointments for a lot. I actually am NOT one of those because I really like Insurrection and Nemesis. I will also say the same for the Kelvin Trilogy (The Chris Pine ST movies) Into Darkness is the best of the 3 but the 1st entry is a FANTASTIC intro to that version of the crew. You're going to have A LOT of fun with those 3.
The actor who played Vice-Admiral Dougherty (Anthony Zerbe) also played Milton Krest in the 1989 James Bond movie "License to Kill." In both "License to Kill" and "Star Trek Insurrection", Anthony Zerbe's character is killed off in a very horrific way.
I love this movie. It really does get like it could have been a 2 part season finally and season opener of the show. It also has one of my favorite verbal misdirects in how they get away with not actually explaining why Worf was there.
This movie was rushed out so fast that it had been in theaters two weeks before I even knew of it's existence, which for me was unheard even before the advent of the internet, let alone when the internet was on the rise. They had obviously given up on trying to fight the longstanding curse of odd-numbered Star Trek movies doing poorly at the box office, and just tried to get past this one, number 9, to get to number 10. The curse wasn't happy about that, as it turned out, and made them pay for it.
@@JakkFrost1 nemesis? My gosh. Evil twin is such a terrible low-budget sci-fi trope. You could barely get away with it in next gen since data was an android made to look like his creator. But TWO evil twins in the same movie? It would have been much better as a Sela last hurrah.
This is one of the more underrated Trek films. I personally really like it. It's Star Trek to its core with ethical considerations. I also really love when Geordi watches the sunrise. It's such a simple, but powerful scene.
That is what Trek does best, character driven stories and this one is a belter. Captain Picard being able to stand up and say "this is wrong and I will not stand for it, even if you outrank me" Not bound by a direct order from Starfleet command, able to use his judgement to right a wrong and everyone under him more than eager to help however they can.
Some people call this a glorified two-part TV episode as a criticism, but that's what I like about it. It's the only TNG movie that actually feels like the series to me. 🤷♂
Amen. Not every story needs to be Cataclismic, and sometimes it is just nice to have an adventure with tons of character moments. If every story has the stakes of First Contact, then it becomes less special. I feel like some of the problems in Nemesis are an over-correction to the unfair criticisms leveled at Insurrection.
@BiggestDawgEver I get what you are saying but ppl expect with a big budget movie FX, a boarder more at stake situation..that's a major difference between a tv show and a movie.
Very Gene Roddenberry of her. Though I imagine Cassie's shipping fantasies tend to end at kissing. And probably just one partner at a time. She comes off as very vanilla is what I'm saying, while Gene was very much not. (no judgement on either count)
"like an episode" was an almost universal experience and no one can really figure out why. remember, when this came out, it had been a really long time since we'd seen a new episode of next gen, so lots of us welcomed a new double-length episode with our favorite cast. others thought 'but it wasn't a movie", and dissed it for that, but I've never really figured out why. There were several parts of this that weren't thought out too well, and in fact the blue in the background of the scenes where Picard is on the array was actually the blue screen which they ended up leaving in instead of replacing with the intended star background 😬. One potential criticism is that at almost every moment you have no idea what is going on. Don't try to understand the science, it doesn't make any sense.
I know this one kinda seems like it could've been a filler episode from the series, but that is what I like about it. And I really enjoy getting to see Picard get a chance at love.
@@turbopokey shed kissed his transporter clone. Also had kissed him when they'd lost their memories due to an alien trying to use them to destroy their enemy they were at war with.
First Contact was a great Action Movie, and Insurrection is a good adventure movie. The problem that Insurrection had at the time was that people expected it to be First Contact 2, when it was it really was its own thing.
The older I get, the more I think this is my favourite Next Gen film. Its basically a 2 parter of the show, with a bigger budget and I love that about it, as the show is one of my all time loves. Oh and the transport at the end? When the bright light filled the room. It was super clever.
I think she she should try the Orville TV Series. I thought at first it was going to be a whacky slapstick tv show, but they covered some really deep controversial storylines and used comedy as a tool instead of a selling point
Not Winnie the Pooh, but Song of the South a Disney movie permanently locked in the vault. The briar patch and Breyer rabbit are from song of the south.
By complete coincidence this afternoon I happened to randomly thumb through a used book at a store of American folklore and of all the stories in this massive 700+ page volume I chose to glance at the Br'er Rabbit story. The footnote said it came from Uncle Remus circa 1895. I might just go back tomorrow to pick it up.

The true Riker Maneuver is the way that Jonathan Frakes takes a seat via swinging his leg over the top of a chair.
Because John Frakes suffered a spinal injury in his youth prior to TNG.
"Riker!"
I really hope that PiB does both Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks eventually. :)
Both Riker and Picard have 2 "maneuvers" one is Starfleet related, one is a character habit.

For Riker the one Geordi suggests in this movie. The other is how Jonathan Frakes swings his leg over the back of a chair to sit.
The true Riker maneuver often involves shore leave on Risa....
All jokes aside, didnt they name a Riker maneuver in the series where he has a mock battle with Captain Picard?
I’ll say one thing about Insurrection, Jerry Goldsmith continued to hit it out of the park with the score!
The "How old are you/New Sight" track is one of the most beautiful pieces of music written for a film.
I thought it was Joel Goldsmith this time ...
Same here. Sometimes, I find myself trying to remember that track whenever I go hiking.@@AARONSHEERN
@ Next film it will be mostly Joel. Jerry was still in charge for this one.

they really only did a worf / troi romantic interest in 3 episodes at the end of next gen. parallels, eye of the beholder and all good things, the entire rest of the time, trio and riker are in an off-again will-they/ won't-they? situation, including riker being upset with Worf that tori died in all-good-things.
Yep, by this stage it had been four and a half years since the last episode of Next Gen, and within that time Worf had gone on to accumulate another three years worth of further adventures and character development over on DS9. The universe keeps rolling on behind the scenes in the years between films.
And Worf is involved with Jadzia by this point.
@@flyingfiddler90qWatch the spoilers.
I never realised that people didn't like this one, I always enjoyed it. Did wish we could check in with them afterwards...
I always liked Insurrection too. And Cassie's absolutely right both how it felt like an oversized TV episode, and also on the sense of fun everybody seemed to be having filming this.
A lot of people don't like this film but it never ceases to make me smile.
I think it's one of the most beautiful films in the Star Trek canon.
I like it. It's a really nice palette cleanser from the big action hero type stuff of First Contact. Worst criticism is that it feels like an extended episode of the TV show rather than a "human race is at stake" blockbuster.
I like the music, acting and cinematography. It's just the plot that's so incredibly dumb.
@@Banterbear I mean, being an extended episode of the TV show isn't the worst thing you could ever say about a Star Trek film. I've always appreciated this movie for that.
The Geordi sunrise moment always hits me.
The thing about Dougherty that pissed me off was that he was going to reduce an infinite natural resource to a finite one. It's obscenely shortsighted.
Underrated Star Trek Film.
I forgot it even existed. I've never seen it. I've always thought there were only 3 TNG movies.
Enjoy!

I would love to see a good reaction to Excalibur 🤞😁
I will be forever grateful to Adam Savage for introducing me to Excalibur. Its not the greatest movie of all time, but it a hell of a good time 😁
Music in that movie is fantastic and very underappreciated by many people, along with the music from Conan The Barbarian.
Excalibur is a masterpiece and the epic score omg, just awesome movie.
"Admiral, we have enemy ships in sector 47!"
15:42
"ITS A TRAP!"
Things I like about this movie:
1) HMS Pinafore
2) Diplomatic dinner scene
3) "Yuck!" scene
4) Riker and Troi FINALLY being able to get together
5) "Definitely feeling aggressive tendencies, sir!"
6) Anij slows time
7) Design of the So'na ships/transporter drones
8) "Dougherty out."
9) "How many people does it take, Admiral?!"
10) Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham) screaming his head off
11) La Forge seeing a sunset
12) Worf: He would
13) "We're getting too old for this."
Do these things make up for the more groan inducing moments and make this a great movie?
The first Star Trek film I saw in theaters. This one has always held a special place in my heart.
Excellent reaction Mrs. Popcorn.
The fact that it felt like a long TNG episode is why this movie is put down in the bottom parts of most people’s lists. But honestly, I love this one because it feels like a TNG episode.
If a court-martial is the only way to tell the Federation what is happening here, Admiral... I welcome it.
They rob us of Picard marching through the halls to the chambers of the Federations throwing opening doors. An delivering one almighty smackdown speech to the Federation Council.
Worf and Deana's relationship stalled after he transfered to DS9 - another series you may want to watch. He find's his new mate there too.
DS9 is much more story driven, is it possible to get enough of the show with only a handful of episodes per season?
Jadzia was a much better match for Worf, Son of Mogh than Deanna.
@@jaredf6205 For the first couple of seasons, yeah.
The last ones you pretty much have to watch every episode.
Damn. Donna Murphy is stunning.
Absolutely beautiful
A few years before this she played Abigail Adams in a great documentary about the founders. It might be around here someplace.
She has been appearing in a recurring role on the new Zachary Quinto NBC series "Brilliant Minds" (2024).
hey like she said, she is very sexy.
Donna Murphy (aka Mother Gothel in 'Tangled'), looked stunningly beautiful in this film...and that sexy voice :)!!!
Some of the saddest moments in history have been the forced relocation of a small group of people to satisfy the desire of the larger. Truer words have never been said.
While this is certainly true, i still think that in THIS artificially created scenrio in Insurrection, the prospect of having an unlimited access to a cure for alle dieases in the world (think about cancer, aids, ebola and co.) could outweight the happiness (and also artificial generated immortalitiy) of this small hippie commune.
and the toxic fanbase think only new trek is "woke" and "overly political"
@@Ferox2121 you vote conservative/right-wing, don't you.
@@cindygray6009 It is one of the hardest films to find. I have a bootleg copy from an old VHS taped tv recording.
Heh... Disney has done their very best to drop *Song of the South* into the memory hole and pretend it never even existed.
Splash mountain was themed after it.
I remember the story where Brer Bear lost his tail. Loved those stories.
I don’t care what anybody says I
Absolutely love this one. “Make sure to take time to play. Every day. “

“Admiral Ackbar or whatever” priceless 🤣
This is my favorite of the Next Generation films for the space action, music score, comedy, and character moments. I love seeing Riker & Deana getting together in this film again.
It's a weird thing, but this one gets so much better with rewatches. I was disappointed like so many others when it came out, but now I love it!!! Thanks for a good reaction :)
This was the first movie I ever saw on dvd. Might be why I like it as much as I do. It’s a very colorful film.
For me, it was the first ST movie i saw in theaters.
My parents were staunch OS fans and hated anything TNG. So when they were divorcing, my great-grandparents knew I liked these kinds of things, so my great-grandfather took me to see this the week it came out.
Same bro. This movie was one of the first dvds I bought and owned myself. So it always holds a special ranking in my Startrek movie collection.

She was also Doc Ock's wife in Spiderman 2
Riker and worf at collision maneuver.
He wouldn't?
Yes He would.
Greatest segment near all time.
and that Warf is just sitting there calm as a cucumber is hilarious.
The most underrated and misunderstood Star Trek movie. Always liked it.
Picards love interest also played dr. Octopus wife in Spider-Man 2
This movie came out around the time Worf got married on Star Trek Deep Space Nine so Troi and Riker were both free to finally continue their relationship.
This is my favourite Star Trek movie. I love the dynamic between the actors in this one especially.
"It is easy to turn a blind eye on the suffering of people you don't know". This is so true. Most people ignore a problem until it affects them.
@@mbwoods2001 Of course. Late night error.

Deep Space 9 is the best Star Trek show. Miles beyond anything in Picard
Nowadays people don't watch these great shows anymore. Nowadays people only want mini-series with a maximum of 12 episodes.

I actually REALLY love the design of that Scout Ship Data is flying. I rank it in the top 5 along with The Delta Flyer design. Although I believe The Scout Ship as just a couple meters longer, The Delta Flyer - I THINK - is wider and larger in height.
I have always been in the minority on this opinion, but I believe this movie is the perfect embodiment of what a Star Trek story is about.
Me too
Only sad thing is that the helm officer actress , Stephanie Niznik , died in 2019. I liked her even with a small part.
Well, there were too many notes, so...

He killed Moe Zart?! 😏
This was peak Star Fleet uniforms, IMO. I love the uniform designs at this point the series.
There are elements of this one that are my favorite of the movies. Who would not fantasize about the chance to be young again?
Or to potentially live forever.
Yeah, but it's very light, and more like a random TNG episode than a good TNG episode.
The guest characters are boring, the enemies are boring.
It's not BAD, it's just kind of a big step down from First Contact.
But at least it's not Nemesis.
The thumbnail makes it look like Picard and Data are holding phasers to your head making you watch Insurrection against your will lol
That would be the Godawful _Nemesis._
Love the husky voice actually. Very Demi Moore.
Jean Luc Picard: I will not force relocate colonist. Except those times I did on TNG.
To be fair, he only did it about half the time. Sometimes he found away around it, like in "Journey's End" where instead he arranged the colonists to give up their federation citizenship instead...
There's a fine line between an agreement made above him and then the Federation literally going out of its way to violate it's own principles.
I’m sure others have already said this, but when Worf goes to Deep Space Nine (joins that series) his relationship with Troi kinda peters out. :)

5:32 "Watch it Jack. He killed Mozart."
The Sona that helped Picard stop Ru'afo was played by Gregg Henry. Even knowing it is him, I still can't tell it is him. He is a great character actor. He had a small role in Guardians of the Galaxy, as Star Lord's uncle.
holy crap, he's awesome. I had no idea that was him!
Grandfather
Henry was great as Mel Gibson's nemesis in Payback.
Why always Gregg is playing bad character? :)
There’s lots of great Worf stories on DS9 if you want to watch it!
The curse wasn't happy about that, as it turned out, and made them pay for it.
by making the upcoming even-numbered star trek film basically the second worse of the entire franchise?

Hi Cassie! I hope that you get to feeling better very soon! Meanwhile, do what you need to rest and recuperate.
I absolutely love Insurrection, it's a true TNG movie. No hang ups from Kirk and co, or 'must use the borg' etc... just pure character enjoyment
Preach on!

You're reaction was priceless. This was a sweet movie. Thank you.
Data quotes Tom Berenger from the movie "Platoon" and it's hilarious!
Cassie you will love DS9 and Voyager! Also the Chris Pine Trek trilogy
Blooper: when introducing Troi and Crusher to the Baku for the first time, each of them nods to the wrong name.
Nice catch.
Wasn’t there also an issue when Troi said she’d never kissed Riker with the beard when she had? (I don’t remember it though)
38:08 Remember that if you're not ready to say goodbye to Picard, you have 3 seasons of "Star Trek: Picard" to watch.
Ugh.
She should just watch season 3 haha
I thought the same thing, until I watched Star Trek Picard. I wish I hadn't. Woof!
Only in the US is it unavailable.
@@purpleslog Mmm hmm. "Not suitable for American audiences."
Brer rabbit is from folklore, much much older than anything Disney.
37:14 “I don’t know if they could do any wrong at this point”.
38:01 “one more….I’m not ready”
