Even though the Neo-Geo original is easily accessible nowadays, I still have a soft spot for the Genesis port. Great conversion for a 12MB cart, great interpretations of the original soundtrack and most importantly (which few people know about): the move inputs for the three characters were updated to their FF2/FFS inputs, making them much easier to pull off.
It's interesting how the Mega Drive and SFC (SNES) developers took different approaches to the problem of fitting the game into a 12Mb cart. The MD developers tried to keep most of the presentation from the arcade, but lost two characters, while the SFC developers cut back the presentation, dropped the two plane system, and added some loading screens, but managed fit all the characters in. Personally, I think I prefer the MD version. I've got a soft spot for it though, as it was the first SNK fighter I ever played. I hadn't played the Neo Geo version at the time either, so I didn't miss the removed characters.
Looking back I do prefer the Mega Drive in the presentation and maybe even in playability but it does sound awful which is a shame. A lot of Neo Geo ports to the Mega Drive sound like crap. They should do since both system use FM Sound.
Nostalgic glasses and all, I love the 1st Fatal Fury! I loved Street Fighter 2, but this game had a charm to it that made it more than the sum of it's parts and was fun to master back in the arcade. The sound was unforgettable as well. Genesis version is what I played before I dreamed of the AES.
The first Real bout was my favorite in the series, I really liked the combos and how you could know people into the subway trains and watch it take them away. I had the original on the Genesis my 2nd post street fighter game I ever owned after deadly moves, which at the time I thought was quite good.
SNK was wise to licence so many of their first party games, out to other consoles. They knew the masses weren't going to pay that kind of money for a console, let alone games that each cost about as much as an SNES or Genesis.
Perhaps somebody else already said it, but to me it looks obvious that in MegaDrive Hwa Jai and Billy Kane are missing because their gameplay requires them getting an item from the audience when some conditions are met. Kinda like Vega in Street fighter 2, who had a move where he was appearing as if he was climbing the cage around the match. They need to be in their own stage, in order to "function" correctly.
It's been a while since I've visited your channel, and once again you've posted an excellent video. The Fatal Fury series has always been one of my favorites next to KOF, Guilty Gear and the likes. The Mega Drive/Genesis version of the original Fatal Fury was actually the first true 16-bit fighter I really got into. Nowadays, I thankfully own a Neo-Geo AES complete with Fatal Fury 1, 2, Special and Real Bout Fatal Fury Special. (As well as several other fighting titles.) I also like to see the footage from other ports like the SNES version (wich IMO is inferior to the Mega Drive version when it comes to gameplay.) Once again, you've delivered with another great video Yakumo.
Indeed guys. I myself own 9 games, with the most expensive one being KOF 2002. (It set me back for about 300 Euros). I wish I could afford some of the titles wich cost a fortune like Samurai Shodown V Special, Garou Mark Of The Wolves, KOF 2003 and of course.... KIzuna Encounter. But alas....
That's true, but that also means getting hold of a Supergun set-up of some sorts, or a (non-sanctioned) MVS converter for my AES console. And both of these options still costs quite some cash. Ahh, the life of a collector eh ? ;)
For me, it's either the AES (expensive in secondary market), the MVS (cheaper, but requires the cartridge adapter if you want to play it in the AES console), or the Neo-Geo CD (cheaper than the AES cartridge, but costs a bit more than the MVS cartridge, and has a long load time if you're playing it on the Neo-Geo CD console)...
I must admit I have a soft spot for this game, much like I have a soft spot for MK1. It's kind of pales in comparison to Street Fighter II, when it comes to controls, but I am one of those "freaks", that love to play fighting games for the story, presentation and characters, not for competition. And in this departments FF1 really delivers. Also, interesting soundtrack and some gameplay gimmicks make this game somewhat more than just another pre-SFII fighting game. NOTE: I know that FF1 was released after SFII, but it seems the difference in release dates was just several months, which means FF1 couldn't be SFII clone in any way and was created as its own game, basically, without trying to ape SFII sensibilities. Interestingly, that while FF1 is much more advanced then SF1, you still can see a lot of common points between two games, especially focus on the presentation and very few playable characters. Though, original Art of Fighting is much closer to the SF1 as far as realization goes. It even has its own "Ryu". I really love presentation of the Fatal Fury 1, with its focus on the story, which usually was largely ignored in other fighting games, its unique soundtrack, with use of voice samples and colorful cast of characters, especially Terry Bogard and Geese Howard. Also, this game was the start of infamous "SNK Syndrome", though it's not exactly as hard as some of the next SNK games. Enemies can be rather cheap, but all of them have weaknesses to certain moves or combinations. You can even cheese Geese, by repeatedly using throw. I remember, once I was even able to beat him without dying. All in all, this game is quite ancient, when compared, even to the games released by SNK itself few years down the line, but it's still somewhat fun and definitely shows potential, which was realized by SNK in its sequels and spin-offs..
ShadowSumac MK's FF1 is Time Killers, which was released the same year as MK1, but Discoalucard of HG101 still calls Time Killers a MK clone because of how obvious it looks in comparison.
Awww, so much nostalgia haha, My dad gave me a Fatal Fury cartridge (I was expecting Mortal Kombat) for my super nintendo as a birthday present, too bad the controls sucks, and the hit detection was pretty bad too, it really was very frustrating and exasperating game, eventually I could dominate the gameplay with its flaws and with the pass of the years I learned that other versions/ports could swap the fighting between a background and a foreground, but never could do that in the snes port. Also I don't remember if I have seen an arcade machine of fatal fury here in Venezuela, never played it in the arcades neither. Nice BoP episode thank you very much! By the way I have to catch up with the vids, but the situation here makes it hard sometimes.
the game that started the snk fighting revolution all the way now up to the beauty that is kof14, balanced gameplay, timeless characters, a force to be rekon with right along capcom
Got the MVS version, along with most sequels of this game. This was almost a contender for Street Fighter 2 before everyone else jumped on the SF2 clone bandwagon. I fed this one a lot or quarters, but don't have great memories of it now. MVS carts of this could have been bought for 10-15 bucks when neo geo went out of style.
For some reason, when I first played this game on the Mega Drive back in 1993, I thought that couple in the back in Duck King's stage were Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding from the Streets of Rage series. Talk about relating different/unrelated companies and properties back then when I was still a child (plus this game was older in the arcades than Streets of Rage on the Mega Drive so it couldn't be an intended homage either).
Hehe, pretty interesting but now that you mention it I can see why you'd think that. I'm sure as a kid I thought of really odd things similar to that too.
I follow both you and gaming history source and he posted his Fatal Fury comparison video a couple of days ago! It seems like you both had the same mind set. 😊. The only difference between you two was he also included the emulated releases.
Got to say, i watch watch Gaming History Source too but much prefer your channel as you voice your opinion and give a little bit of information about each port. GHS footage of each version drags on for way too long whereas you show just enough of each version to show how it plays and what it looks like. Keep up the good work.;)
The megadrive version is the best for multiplayer the neo geo CD has the better quality it's too bad it's a simple copy with no extra character for multiplayer like the megadrive did
Fatal Fury was an evolution of Street Fighter, from its gameplay (no combo, same special move controller motion, similar physics) and presentation (limited character selection, choose from four opponents at the beginning). Unfortunately for SNK, Street Fighter II was a revolution with new designers at the helm. Street Fighter II could have been Fatal Fury if the original designers of Street Fighter didn't leave Capcom to make Fatal Fury for SNK.
you forget 2 or 3 things about the snes port...theres no two plane system, small sprites characters, ..and there was no 2 player versus....in the end snes was a terrible port..... the megadrives version beats it.. have larger sprites characters 2 plane system is avaible 2 player mode vs....(even the neo geo arcade original dont have this)
You know, I own this on my MVS and I grew up playing it when it was new. To this date I still have no idea how to jump into the background voluntarily ...
a-HA! It's good to know that my opinion of this title was, in fact, ruined by the SNES release (which I played first). I have had way more fun playing my MVS cart. It all makes sense! I haven't even booted the SNES cart since I got it on MVS, I should pop it in and see if I still hate it on that platform. hah! Thanks for the vid! Reminds me, I need to get a Garou: MotW cart soon... :D
I was a bit meh with this, even in the 2000s I bought the FF/FF2/ FF Special collection (?) for PS2, I just couldn't really get into it and ended up trading it in. This game was also the start of the Neo Geo being inundated with one on one fighters, the Neo Geo game that I used to always look out for in arcades was Ninja Combat. I did play the Megadrive version and thought it was quite well done, even though I am not a fan
hello Retro Core, ever since I told you about which version of Sega Touring Car for Saturn I should buy, my Japanese version came in the mail yesterday. However, I experienced the bottom half of the screen glitching. My system is NTSC and an ST Key cart is inside my system. Will the glitching stop if the game is played on a Japanese Saturn or will the same problem occur?
If you are using a PAL game you will have the bottom quarter of the screen missing or glitching. But you are using a Japanese game on a US Saturn, right? There shouldn't be an issues. Maybe your ST Card is mistaking the Japanese game as a PAL game?
I think my cartridge is mistaking the game as the PAL version. I'm not sure to live with this issue or later on get a Japanese Saturn. The Saturn I currently own is NTSC.
+ManaNaito That's G-Mantle, SNK's mascot before Terry Bogard. He appeared in various SNK games, for example, in King Of The Monsters 2 his face is the 1-UP icon. 2:39 There is a statue of him in the background on Raiden's stage
Megadrive port is my favourite version of the game, cause of the amazing remixes, far superior to the original, especially in slow european.version : this way, geese theme never been so impressive.
Great game, sadly this piece of game wasn't part of my childhood :( Hey, do I have some way to get in contact with you? I wanted to know if I could buy something from you, as you said you sell stuff too!
I still believe King of Fighters XIV i the best Fatal Fury / King of Fighters game out there and it got released over here a couple of months ago for the PS4.
Console Wars did an episode of this game on SEGA vs SNES. Looking at it and realizing after, I am BAFFLED at just how bloody awful the SNES port is. (I checked videos after their episode after for more clarification on other flaws) So baffled, I made an entire shitlist on everything wrong with it, and boy is it massive. Might post it in replies if anyone's interested. Probably will post it in a heartbeat if Retro Core wants to see.
Retro Core Okay then! Graphics: Many graphical bugs/oddities found throughout the game Some stages don't go through day-night cycle between rounds Rain is between shadow and character layers and looks off. CROPPED SCREEN Lacking animation Most backgrounds have no animation Characters don't have forward/backwards sprites due to cut game mechanic (but that's for later) Most fighters have far less animation Presentation: Cut down intro and ending SNES just has a wall of text for an intro. That's it. No picture. No music. Just text SNES censors the ending as if Nintendo is against you killing Geese Lacking in-game presentation Tiny windows for character screens between matches No image of beaten up opponent when you beat them (but for some reason, they're there along with your beaten up portrait if you fail LOL) Geese introduction literally skimmed over. No character being taken to him. Geese reduced to tiny portrait. Has nothing other than formal outfit etc. Characters don't finish Geese with a special move. They use a generic kick. No flashing health bars when on low HP Audio: THE MUSIC SUCKS nuff said Gameplay: Cut mechanics No dual plane mechanic from the arcade game Lack of 1P vs COM mode Lack of COM vs COM Gimped characters Some characters played outside the main mode lose features they could actually do in the main mode (in 1P vs 2P) This includes: Special Moves Jumping Crouching etc The game plays far worse overall FUCKING LOAD TIMES And probably a whole lot more I missed.
Emulation is a viable way to enjoy video games. It may not be that interesting as tech analyses go, but for the purposes of preserving legacy video games for future generations, it's top notch. Just sayin'.
We didn't get a really good version of this game to play in the home till Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 1, and it's emulated games, arrived on the PS2. The 16 bit ports were not good, and the X68K version wasn't too hot. The PS2 version even comes with an arranged soundtrack, something oddly missing from the NG CD version (wasn't it one of the first NG CD games though?).
It is really surprising how much of the game aged poorly considering the fact that the team behind it was mostly headed by those who worked on SF II initially. But the good thing is that SNK got around to make an even greater series; which in my opinion is the perfect balance of mechanics and simplicity that maintains relative ease to learn and play. That is, the KOF series.
No, people who created on FF1 were behind creation of the original Street Fighter in 1987. They quit Capcom soon after that and had nothing to do with SFII..
It would be completely possible to get cd quality sound out of the Sega Genesis like how the msu1 works with the Genesis , there's a guy named tiido in Estonia that has software that will play cd quality tracks straight out of the Genesis at 37khz I'll post a link below some really cool stuff on his page.
+Retro Core I wonder if any emulator developers are aware of tiido's work maybe get something going like the sd2snes what are some currently worked on emulators? I know ones being built for accuracy atm can't remember name or someone could use the source code like they did with ultimate mortal kombat trilogy.
It's one thing for the Genesis to playback CD quality music when that is the only thing it's doing, but can it do it when it also has to run game code? The Genesis does not have a CPU with processing to spare and it doesn't have a dedicated processor to decode a compressed CD quality audio stream.
+Retro Core there was a bunch of them in fact 3, the 3rd being my favorite... It was quite bad ass in a 80s pitfighter style way like street fighter V series not 5, V
+Retro Core There was Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf, Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle, and Fatal Fury the Motion Picture, I'm pretty sure in just about everyone someone tried kidnapping her lol
I didn't think the Art of Fighting anime was that good as I thought it was rather dull and doesn't really follow the story in the game which is disappointing. There is also anime versions of Samurai Shodown and Virtua Fighter. The Game Gear version of Virtua Fighter is based on the anime.
The SFC port actually looks pretty damn good. It's just a shame that the controls and sound were crap. I always hated the fact that Takara did most of the Neo Geo ports to the SFC because they never seemed to be as good as they could've been.
The really good ones were actually developed and published by Saurus and obscure developers like KAC (Art of Fighting). They were merely published by Takara in North America.
@@IslandBoy-808 I don't mean it look LIKE the arcade original, I meant it looked "good", not great! Just...... good. But you have a good point, the SNES version of FF. Special is better though.
The problem with the two-plane system in this game is the player can't initiate a plane change to dodge an attack or flank the opponent, only the AI opponent can do that (i.e. you change plane only when AI changes plane). Makes the existence of the two-plane system completely pointless for the player until Fatal Fury 2.
Scary!, was playing this game yesterday on MAME, and man has the game aged poorly especially when you compare how well SF2 holds up and this game came out after SF2!. The controls just feel sluggish, hit detection is way off, and the amount of damage you take is so unbalanced, you just feel like your never quiet in control and any victory feels like luck more than skill, which just results in a poor gaming experience in 2016. Glad they sorted it out for FF2
I played this a lot in the arcades here in Brazil when we still had arcades, back in the... 90s? 90s right. Why did I play it? Because it was empty, unlike the SF2 machines :-) I got quite good at it and, if playing solo, would get to the end every freaking day. I loved using the glitch in Billy Kane where you can win the fight in two hits or something like that. It was not very good even back then. So no surprise it hasn't aged well. I have the complete FF collection on Neo CD, I want to play it someday when I get enough energy to hook it up to the TV... :-D
jagripino I'd rather not say :) I'm sure you'll emjoy the show though. Actually, the truth is I haven't decided yet. There's a few shows in pre-production right now.
Just discovered this channel. Really appreciate the hard work you put into putting these together!
Thank you 👍
It's interesting how the Mega Drive and SFC (SNES) developers took different approaches to the problem of fitting the game into a 12Mb cart. oh i love the variety of music in this game. at least, the arcade music. i’m incredibly bad at actually playing, but i do rock out...
There are some good tunes in this game but for me, Fatal Fury Special is where the series really picked up.
Retro Core what can I say, first love...
It's been a while since I've visited your channel, and once again you've posted an excellent video.

It's cool owning an AES but boy, it sure does cost a lot to build a good collection.
Amen. Hence only having one game myself.

Yeah, this is why going the MVS rout is much more sensible. It justy doesn't look as sexy.

Hahaha, same here.
You can't jump into the background yourself. You have to wait for the AI opponent to do it first, then you merely follow him.
4:23 I love this music

Don't boot up the SNES version. You will not be happy :)
KOF95 has enough versions for you: PS1, Sat., Game Boy, NGCD.
Wasn't there a Game Boy version of FF1, or am mistaking that with FF2?
Ah, the Gb game.was of ff2
+Retro Core thanks
I loved always the super famicom version because the speed is faster than the arcade, but well the difficulty is higher. Good video!
Have you played Fatal Fury Special on the SFC? If not you should give it a try. That's a fantastic port.

x68000 version is also missing rain on howard arena , you can install game if you had a harddrive
I think you are right or was it the MD version that never had the rain? One of them never had it that's for sure.
Retro Core both did not have it

Get a Japanese Saturn. All the best games were released in Japan anyway. I can't see any reason why you would not want one.
I would like one, but the core system because I already have the cords and controllers
Just noticed that the taxi driver is an alien. Maybe he's the one that keep resurrecting Geese Howard.
I thought he was one of Geese's henchmen wearing a mask :) The alien idea is more fun though.

(I checked videos after their episode after for more clarification on other flaws) So baffled, I made an entire shitlist on everything wrong with it, and boy is it massive. Might post it in replies if anyone's interested. Probably will post it in a heartbeat if Retro Core wants to see.
Sure. Go ahead and post it. I'm sure people will be interested.
Retro Core Okay then!
Graphics:
Many graphical bugs/oddities found throughout the game
Some stages don't go through day-night cycle between rounds
Rain is between shadow and character layers and looks off.
CROPPED SCREEN
Lacking animation
Most backgrounds have no animation
Characters don't have forward/backwards sprites due to cut game mechanic (but that's for later)
Most fighters have far less animation
Presentation:
Cut down intro and ending
SNES just has a wall of text for an intro. That's it. No picture. No music. Just text
SNES censors the ending as if Nintendo is against you killing Geese
Lacking in-game presentation
Tiny windows for character screens between matches
No image of beaten up opponent when you beat them (but for some reason, they're there along with your beaten up portrait if you fail LOL)
Geese introduction literally skimmed over. No character being taken to him. Geese reduced to tiny portrait. Has nothing other than formal outfit etc.
Characters don't finish Geese with a special move. They use a generic kick.
No flashing health bars when on low HP
Audio:
THE MUSIC SUCKS nuff said
Gameplay:
Cut mechanics
No dual plane mechanic from the arcade game
Lack of 1P vs COM mode
Lack of COM vs COM
Gimped characters
Some characters played outside the main mode lose features they could actually do in the main mode (in 1P vs 2P)
This includes:
Special Moves
Jumping
Crouching
etc
The game plays far worse overall
FUCKING LOAD TIMES
And probably a whole lot more I missed.
also fatal fury 1 is only game has co-op on it
Yes, that's true.
I forgot all about that
u forgot the snes version is missing the second layer (foreground) unlike the original and md versions :P
Yep, that is true.
The music on the SNES port is so bad, it sounds like it comes from fricking Mario Paint, and I'm not saying any hyperbole here.
Emulation is a viable way to enjoy video games. It may not be that interesting as tech analyses go, but for the purposes of preserving legacy video games for future generations, it's top notch. Just sayin'.
Funky: You and Gaming History Source did the same game again on the same week. LOL
Yep, very odd that is. I start putting these vodeos together on a Monday too so it's not as if I copied his idea either. Very odd.
Gamers think alike :-D I was playing Fatal Fury for footage on Monday, too. Future footage.
I'm surprised there's no UK computer ports of Fatal Fury.
I guess it just wasn't that popular. Or Maybe SNK wouldn't grant the license?
I'm thinking the latter since there are no NeoGeo games on the European computers.
Yep, Fatal fury was one of the first Neo CD games.
Retro Core Then that's probably why SNK didn't give it a remixed soundtrack. The remixed OST on the PS2 versions quite nice though.
tung fu rue is a master roshi clon?
Hmm, could be. The truth is, I don't know who Master Roshi Clon is.
Retro Core although I was joking... dragon ball master roshi something "transform" in that "bane clone" ...you know.. the one break Batman's back...XD
retrovideogamejunkie
Oh, I know how you mean now that you've mentioned Dragonball :)
+Retro Core I guess clon (Spanish) y clone (English) was a giveaway XD
The home version to choose is obviously the NEO GEO CD port.
I'd like that one, but it seems a bit pricey so I'll probably stick to Fatal Fury Battle Archives 1 for the PS2.
the ps2 is a emulacion disc
It is really surprising how much of the game aged poorly considering the fact that the team behind it was mostly headed by those who worked on SF II initially.
But the good thing is that SNK got around to make an even greater series; which in my opinion is the perfect balance of mechanics and simplicity that maintains relative ease to learn and play. That is, the KOF series.
No, people who created on FF1 were behind creation of the original Street Fighter in 1987. They quit Capcom soon after that and had nothing to do with SFII..
It would be completely possible to get cd quality sound out of the Sega Genesis like how the msu1 works with the Genesis , there's a guy named tiido in Estonia that has software that will play cd quality tracks straight out of the Genesis at 37khz I'll post a link below some really cool stuff on his page.
www.hot.ee/t/tmeeco/MD.HTM
Yeah, this is true but it does eat up an awful lot of cartridge space.
+Retro Core I wonder if any emulator developers are aware of tiido's work maybe get something going like the sd2snes what are some currently worked on emulators? I know ones being built for accuracy atm can't remember name or someone could use the source code like they did with ultimate mortal kombat trilogy.
stevacus I'm sure many know about tiido's workbut I guess it all comes down to having any time.
It's one thing for the Genesis to playback CD quality music when that is the only thing it's doing, but can it do it when it also has to run game code? The Genesis does not have a CPU with processing to spare and it doesn't have a dedicated processor to decode a compressed CD quality audio stream.
Megadrive so the best port can playin with the bosses of the game
Have you ever seen the Fatal Fury anime?
Yes, about 20 years ago. From what I remember it wasn't that good. I've also seen the Art of Fighting anime.
+Retro Core there was a bunch of them in fact 3, the 3rd being my favorite... It was quite bad ass in a 80s pitfighter style way like street fighter V series not 5, V
stevacus
Ah, I can't remember which on I saw. I kind of remember Mai being kidnapped.
Projectiles are strong in this game. Way too strong. Other than that, it's not that bad.
Agreed. It's kind of cheap but okay for a first attempt.
The SFC port actually looks pretty damn good. It's just a shame that the controls and sound were crap. I always hated the fact that Takara did most of the Neo Geo ports to the SFC because they never seemed to be as good as they could've been.
It sure does look good. In stills it looks very close to the Neo Geo original.
The really good ones were actually developed and published by Saurus and obscure developers like KAC (Art of Fighting). They were merely published by Takara in North America.
@@IslandBoy-808 no, it looks good.
I agree fully. I his hasn't aged well at all.
What's coming up next week?
jagripino
I'd rather not say :) I'm sure you'll emjoy the show though. Actually, the truth is I haven't decided yet. There's a few shows in pre-production right now.
*****
Yeah, it's not as good as it once was but compared to Fatal Fury it's held up a little better.
Wow, that SNES music...yikes. Way to not use the sound chip at all. Sounds almost as bad as the worst-of-the-worst PC Engine/Mega Drive music.
I feel that the SNES version of Fatal Fury Special is very good but yeah, not much of a fan when it comes to the original.
