    Opening Music - AmIEviL - "Castlemania" ocremix.org/artist/4281/amievil
    Closing Music - Just Coffee - "Vampithrillic" ocremix.org/artist/15047/just...

    Great as always Yakumo. Also released this week earlier than usual. Maybe I would have included the X68000 Akumajo Dracula here too (this would have also forced you to include its PS1 conversion) because it's a semi-remake of sorts and even though to some of their different levels here and there, it's not that far off to compare it from its original roots as battling out SNES Vampire's Kiss with Rondo and its PSP remake. Different thing is Super Castlevania IV because of being a totally different game (some of the X68000 levels actually come from there) But I respect your decision. It's fine like this way too because of being enough versions already to compare.

    I know Battle Of The Ports is meant for the main commercial releases but recently someone created a homebrew port/clone called Intellivania. It is shocking not only how faithful it is to original Castlevania on weaker hardware but he added many improvements to the engine. For example when your health gets low the outer window of the play area will flash red to remind you that you're a hit or two away from loosing a life. They also added a feature where when you use the stopwatch, a numbers counter will flash the numbers above you letting you know how many seconds you have before the ability stops. I understand the context that the programmer did this with modern coding techniques but with that being said it puts the computer ports from back then to shame. The Commodore port was good but for 16 bit systems like PC and Amiga back then there's no excuse with the amount of power they had.

    10:13 The European name of the MSX2 version is actually Vampire Killer. And in Japan, Vampire Killer is the name for Castlevania: Bloodlines. Confusing, isn't?

    • @NotEnoughSound
      @NotEnoughSound 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      just to add to that, the Japanes versions of Harmony, Aria and Lament are all named Castlevania (with again different sub titels) as opposed to Demon Castle Dracula like every other game, it wouldn't be until Lords of Shadow where they would again re name it to Castlevania in Japan

    Oh yeah. I originally played Castlevania on the NES back around 1990 I recall, but by 1994 I had another C64, and played it there. Both were fun in their own way, though I have fonder memories of the NES version. These days I have the Castlevania Collection for the PS4 and the Switch Lite. A good thing too, since I can switch to the Japanese versions of all those games (and take advantage of that Easy Mode you mentioned...the US didn't get that).

      Castlevania is a game that if you screw up, you REALLY screw up. So much of it requires split second timing, and Simon moves kind of slow to begin with. If the controls are unresponsive, the whole thing falls apart. Seems like they knew they needed more time and money to get out a better version of the game, and threw in that bit of self deprecation to say "hey! YOU do better when the publishers are breathing down your necks saying they wanted a finished version yesterday."

    The original Castlevania has aged surprisingly well for being the first in the series. Obviously, the FDS and NES/Famicom versions are the best, but the Commodore 64 port looks to be really close in terms of graphics and gameplay. The music, though in the correct spots, doesn't sound all that nice imo. After that is the IBM PC version, which moves a little choppy but seems to have the same enemy patterns, and the music is actually pretty nice with an Adlib/Soundblaster 16 or Tandy 3-voice chip (yes it's compatible with the tandy chip, that's how I played it in DOSBox).
    And then there's the turd Novotrade put on the Amiga. I wouldn't say Novotrade only made bad games (The Lost World: Jurassic Park was a decent Mega Drive game near the end of its lifespan, and Kolibri on the 32X is also quite an interesting game), but they were very hit or miss, and this was DEFINITELY a miss.

    Fair treatmement for the C64 version. I've seen reviews nitpicking flaws that aren't even there, made by people that don't know what the limits of the machine are. It's not the NES game, but a decent approximation nonetheless. The C64 version was the only one I played back in the day, and I loved it. It's also not very well known because there is no PAL version officially, probably because a game without a cassette version wouldn't have sold in the UK. Thankfully I had a disk drive and a Final Cartridge III (they were more common in continental Europe), so I rarely had to deal with cassette tapes nonsense. To me it is one of the very few side scrolling action platformers worth to be played on the C64 along with Giana and the two Turricans (and yeah, I don't care about Hawkeye, Flimbo's Quest, Creatures or any other euro-platfomer like the Dizzy or Monty games..) Sure it looks like a primitive prototype compared the NES game, but I wouldn't trade more polished visuals with lack of gameplay (that could have been a very likely outcome on the C64 if they had focused more on the graphics).

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh man that Amiga port, I don't know how (or why for that matter) but I somehow managed to beat it a couple of years ago. How they could mess everything up this bad is a work of art too I guess. I'm an avid fan of the Amiga, but I would in no way try to defend this turd!
    It took me 3 hours to beat Dracula, because on top of the broken controls the boss itself was completely broken as well. Every time he teleports he flashes for a brief second so you could get out of the way and land a shot on him, right? WRONG on the Amiga port! Even when he flashes he still hits you and he always spawn right on top of you so you had to take a forced hit like 9 out of 10 teleportations.
    The only way to beat him was to just wait for that one lucky run when he doesn't teleport on top of you too many times so you have some health left for the second phase which was just a plain endurance race because it was literally impossible to run underneath him when he jumps so you had to hope he would die before you did. And to top it all off he looks goofy as heck too :p Great video as always Mark!

      I have a friend who is a pixel artist (He lives out of this) and he is a BIG BIG fan of Castlevania. Everytime he talks about Castlevania, I Just show him a pic of the last form of Dracula in the Amiga version, and he goes like "You do that because you know it really hurts me, right?"
      They gave the game to a couple of 12 years old to draw, I am pretty sure. And probably a temp worker had to put the music at the right parts in 5 minutes before the disk went to mastering.

    You included the MSX2 version because you knew the comments would chastise you if you didn't... but then you SLANDERED it, which is going to get you a whole DIFFERENT kind of negative comment storm! ;)
    ...Well, probably not, as your opinion is sadly quite a common one. But as someone who considers the MSX2 version of Castlevania to be not only the best version of the game, but one of the best Castlevania games out there, period, I do at least feel compelled to comment in its defense!
    It's a VERY DIFFERENT game from anything else in the series, but if you're into Metroidvanias or other exploratory platformers, it's a game with some absolutely BRILLIANT level designs, and stands as the true predecessor to Simon's Quest (which is, unsurprisingly, my favorite Castlevania game on the NES/Famicom, and another of my favorite overall games in the series). It controls well (if you're using a controller, anyway), and a lot of the gameplay elements in it are fairly brilliant -- sub-weapons replacing your whip but not using hearts suddenly makes the dagger an incredibly valuable item to find, and the added threat of losing the cross or axe if you're unable to catch it on the rebound adds a risk/reward mechanic to the game that helps increase tension and ensure that you don't spam attacks willy-nilly.
    On top of that, the game also includes some delightfully devious trolls designed to kill unobservant or overzealous players -- a bottomless pit at the top of a tower that you'd certainly know about if you actually used the map item you were given mere minutes prior, a fake door key designed to lure you to your doom if you go after it, and a dungeon area that requires breaking blocks on one side before circling back around to the other side lest you find yourself hopelessly trapped.
    The stages are also larger, more expansive, and more fun to explore than in the NES game, where they're just linear romps from point A to point B with absolutely no branching paths or deviations. And exploring is the key to winning, since the items you find -- the hourglass, the wooden shield, etc. -- can spell the difference between success and failure when you face off against the stage boss.
    In the end, the game really plays to the MSX's strengths, much as the Famicom version plays to its system's strengths, and I think it can serve as a good litmus test for those who are considering buying an MSX. If you like what Castlevania on MSX does, then you NEED an MSX in your life, as there are lots more games just like it -- I should know, as I own most of them, and they're just about all I play these days. ;)
    So, yeah -- to be clear, I'm not criticizing you for speaking your opinion! Your opinion is your own, of course. But I would at least encourage you to give Castlevania on MSX another look at some point, with an open mind -- and I would encourage your viewers, if they're reading this, to give it a try sometime as well. It just might be the missing link you've been looking for all these years, and could easily find its way near the top of your rankings among series entries if you're anything at all like me!

      Funny thing, this is the only post that is upset about my opinion of the MSX2 game.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroCore Yeah, that's fair. I mean, like I said, I know my opinion isn't a popular one. But I also can assure you the game has its hardcore fans, particularly in Japan -- though even in Europe, in the MSX community, I've seen some people talking about how this is one of their favorite MSX games. So it is by no means a universally panned game or anything -- it just wasn't to your taste. And is, admittedly, nothing like any other Castlevania game except MAYBE Simon's Quest to an extent.
      I just felt compelled to comment, because I legitimately and unironically LOVE the MSX2 version of Castlevania, and I feel it's more of a misunderstood game than anything else. If you can put yourself in the right mindset for it, it's a veritable masterpiece.

      This guy just hates every MSX game. Same thing with Gradius, he slandered it too. But hey, he can't even say the name right and show images just from the 1st part of the 1st stage, I bet he hasn't even played the game. I guess is too difficult for him not going just straight ahead.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@valrond I mean, I love Gradius, and the MSX version plays fine, but it is probably one of the worst versions of Gradius out there. It's an impressive effort for the time and the hardware, but given the choice, I'd play a better version of Gradius, so I can completely understand that.
      Castlevania on MSX, though, is just... a completely different game. It's not a game being held back by technical limitations, but a game which embraces those technical limitations and turns them into strengths by utilizing them for an alternative gameplay experience.
      Either way, I'm not going to fault anyone for disliking either game, as opinions are opinions. I just wanted to come to MSX Castlevania's defense a bit, because personally, I think it's a masterpiece. It's one of the defining games on the MSX, as far as I'm concerned, and a prime example of why I love the system.
      But that's just MY opinion!

      It already gets wrong by calling the MSX2 version a port. In fact, the MSX2 version of Vampire killer/Castlevania is actually the ORIGINAL game, despite coming 1 month after the FDS release. Both versions were developed on parallel, but according to an old interview with Akihito Nagata, the MSX2 version was the leading platform, the FDS system version was more like a turn down version due technical and market reasons, therefore it was released a month earlier.

    And if you compare this to on the Sharp X68000, it's just shameful! That _Wall of Shame_ is wholly appropriate!
    Yes, I know it's not really the same game. But it goes to show what can be achieved on a similar 16 bit computer. Sure, the X68000 is more powerful than the Amiga, in many ways. But the Amiga is a lot closer to the X68000 than it is to the NES.
