    The Saturn and the Dreamcast were so under-rated, had them both and loved them.
    I remember getting my Saturn at launch and telling workmates about Tomb Raider just to get funny looks and being labeled a nerd. A few months down the line the PS1 was released and Tomb Raider and gaming is all anyone could talk about.
    Well, i'm 44 years old, still play games old and new and still a nerd and proud, even got my daughter into gaming and she appreciates it.

      Just like myself although I got the Japanese Saturn in 1995. Not much to play on it back then but I loved it and still do.
      Like yourself I'm in my early 40s (42) and got my son in to gaming. He's happy to play modern and retro. It's all about the fun factor with him.

      The DC wasn`t an underrated console at all. The Dreamcast sold like pancakes until the PS2 destroyed it.

      Craig Wilson Dude, I'm turning 40 next month, and I owned both the Saturn and Dreamcast. Had a ton of Capcom fighters on both systems. The SEGA platforms were the BEST ways to play 2D fighting games, back then. My enthusiasm for the old Capcom fighters is partially why I'm so disappointed in Capcom's recent Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. It was such a half assed, piss poor release with next to no effort put into it. It was literally just an arcade ROM dump, with a $40 price tag slapped on it.
      I'm also to this day, largely disappointed in the Darkstalkers Resurrection release. Capcom did so much many things wrong when they developing it. How do you LEAVE OUT THE VERY FIRST DARKSTALKERS GAME, IN A DARKSTALKERS COLLECTION?! It vexes me to no end. They also just left out the enhanced versions of the games, like Vampire Hunter & Savior 2. It was just, utter laziness and apathy on Capcom's part. They never really cared about the Vampire games in the first place, so I'm not surprised.

    The Alpha 3 GBA port was done with a 8 MB cart. Could you imaging what more could've been done if they had a 16 MB cart to work with??

    • @gabrielloko30000
      @gabrielloko30000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's because the time of release. So yeah, instead of work in a new version for GBA with the 16 MB cart, they passed the port for the PSP. A much more powerful hardware, to say the least

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It still wouldn't have been Arcade perfect due to the hardware but it could have included all stages and speech. Still, as it is I think the GBA is a fantastic attempt.

      CrimsonDragoon the Gameboy Advance "port" of SF ALPHA 3 was shit. It just is. It barely even resembles anything Street Fighter Alpha 3. I can't even call it a version of SF ALPHA 3, it's so derivative. It looks 8 bit. The Super Nintendo, years prior, had a port of Street Fighter Alpha 2 that looked atleast nearly like Alpha 2 (not counting the inherent shortcomings). It just, makes me chuckle and then kinda groan in agony when I see this gameboy advance version of SFA3.

    • @shinbakihanma2749
      @shinbakihanma2749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      jgfjgfify The GBA was nowhere near an upgraded SNES. It wasn't as powerful as a full SNES. The SNES had a version of STREET FIGHTER ALPHA 2 that despite it's shortcomings due to hardware limitations, otherwise looked nearly like SFA2 and played like SFA2. The gameboy advance version of SFA3 looked like an 8bit rendition of the game. There's no way in hell, the Gameboy advance is more powerful than the SNES. IT'S ALL LIES.

    Only the Saturn version (and PS2 version) of SFA3 has T. Hawk's backward walking animation. That's how you can tell if the version of SFA3 you're looking at is derived from the PS1 version (missing this animation) or the Saturn version (contains this animation).

    • @DragonSlayerKyo
      @DragonSlayerKyo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah. It's VRam constraints. Gief is also missing his backwalk animation in the PS 1 port.

    • @Tempora158
      @Tempora158 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rob Toohey
      Zangief does have his backwards walking animation in the PS1 version when fighting himself. However, T. Hawk doesn't have his walk animation at all on the PS1. It's also missing in the Dreamcast version and there definitely is no VRAM constraint there. This is how we know it's a port built on top of the PS1 version.

    • @DragonSlayerKyo
      @DragonSlayerKyo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly don't count that as a '99% percentile' since gief vs gief is a mirror match.

    • @Tempora158
      @Tempora158 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The key part is that particular Zangief animation does exist as an asset to be used in the PS1 version for that particular match, while T.Hawk's animation isn't there at all no matter what you do on the PS1 version. That's how you can tell the Dreamcast, Naomi, GBA and PSP version are built on top of the PS1 base, rather than the CPS2 or the Saturn version.

    • @totalprocall6894
      @totalprocall6894 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The arcade version doesn't have this animation either...in a side note the video also mentions "the saturn is the only offering to have true RGB mode outside of the arcade" that also isnt true in the sense i think he's talking proper 240p video output like the cps2 original. Only the ps1 and saturn output proper 240p meaning all other versions are scaled messy waste of time(not sure about psp screen options though). Only ps1 and saturn versions look correct through an OSSC.

    • @shinbakihanma2749
      @shinbakihanma2749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jgfjgfify well, the only reason the PSX version was so well received was simply born out of necessity. The PSX was the DEFAULT console of choice, and most gamers simply didn't own the Saturn or Dreamcast in comparison. The PSX version was decent, at best, and that's me being generous in relation to the era it was released. It really didn't warrant the overwhelming praise it received at the time of release. I still own the PSX greatest hits version, and I keep it only because of the novelty. I used to own the Dreamcast version, and that was my default version of choice for years until the SF Alpha Anthology was released on PS2.
      I unfortunately, never owned the Saturn version, as I sold my Saturn system nearly a year prior. I kinda regretted it afterward, because I had a lot of awesome import games for it, like most of the Capcom fighters. I was a young guy, and just wasn't in a collector's mindset back then, but hey, you live and you learn.

    I swear, to this day, it still sounds like Cammy and the other two dolls are saying "Shit!" when you miss the throw.
    Also, the last stage of the Dreamcast's "World Tour" mode is such a pain in the arse to beat. The stage is Gokuentou Island (the name of Akuma/Gouki's level), the background is the boss version of Point-48106 (Dictator's level), initial BGM is "Brave or Grave" (Shin Vega/Final Bison theme) or just the regular versions of the leading opponent, and is set up as follows.
    Stage 1: R. Dramatic Battle (E. Ryu + Akuma/Gouki)
    Stage 2: Survival (Shin Akuma/Gouki + Vega/M. Bison, 3 enemy stock)
    Stage 3: R. Dramatic Battle (2x Final Bison/Shin Vega, enemy has Infinite Super Combo Bar).
    Lose once, and you get the option of "Give Up?". Selecting it takes you to the credits, but beating this level also gives the "Ism Plus" bonus that overall increases your stats. Saving after the credits permanently locks you out of that character save for World Tour.

      Also, Alpha/Zero 3 on Dreamcast is NOT compatible with SCART cables or Beharius' VGA boxes when set to 15KHz mode. It will just boot-loop back to the Dreamcast screen. So VGA-only without a patched version on CD-R.

      Many people may not believe the arcade version is the best due to the home versions featuring a larger roster of fighters. Balrog, DeeJay, T.Hawk, Fei Long, Guile, Ingrid, Maki, Yun, Evil Ryu and Akuma were not featured in the arcade version so that version seems incomplete compared to the home versions. The graphics, sound and game play of most of the home versions are pretty much identical to that of the arcade version too.

    That ending music at the end of the video during the side-by-sides was one of the best uses of stereo sound on this iPad Pro I’m using. It sounds absolutely outstanding. Not entirely surprising, as Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 3’s soundtrack and presentation blew away most other fighters then and now. Oh, and Sega Saturn ftw... I wish it wasn’t so expensive to get an original copy of that version.

    I think there's something wrong with the way you've captured the Saturn RGB mode (colour space settings?) because it looks really dull. I've watched a few of your port battles and have noticed the Saturn appearing dull and washed out as well as some other captures not representing a particular port faithfully
    I say this as constructive criticism and also because some people watching may not be aware of the difficulties associated with video capture and might be given the wrong impression of a particular port. Aside from that, keep up the great work :)

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it was all down to the way for some reason my capture card likes to capture Saturn footage. I mean, it looks fine on the TV but dull on the capture. I think I've fixed it now. That last show to feature Saturn looked better.

    Remember Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3 had two arcade versions, the CPS-II version (which had less characters) and the Naomi version (which had more characters) which is called Street Fighter Zero 3 Upper. While the PS1 and Sega Saturn ports were based on the CPS-II version of Alpha 3, the Sega Dreamcast, GBA, and PSP ports were all based on the Naomi version. In the Naomi version and its three home ports, if you lose to Final M. Bison in Arcade Mode, the game will allow you to continue and fight him again unlike the CPS-II, PS1, and Sega Saturn versions which if you lose to Final M. Bison in Arcade Mode, the game will just give you the bad ending instead with no option to continue and retry (this is why Capcom made Final Battle Mode so to kinda solve this issue).

    8:43 *PlayStation*
    I think this port of SFA3 is up there with the best work on the system by anyone. Yes, it's missing frames. Not as many as you'd think, though. It's not as bas as SFA2 and all the Vs games that came to PlayStation from CPS2. With SFA3, Capcom clearly did everything they could to retain as much character animation frames as possible. Thats why hit 'sparks' and some animated background elements are done with polygons. Takes up way less memory, and a worthy sacrifice so that Zangief's standing animation isn't made of 3 frames lol. The loading times are a few seconds, it's not a big deal. The loading times on SFA2 on PSone were absolutely epic.
    All in all, I say Capcom smashed it out of the park with SFA3 on PSone. Yes - it's not as good as Saturn etc. It gets insanely-close to those versions. If only Capcom had done this with previous CPS2 games that came to PSone - those games wouldn't have been so bad.

    he's talking proper 240p video output like the cps2 original. Only the
    ps1 and saturn output proper 240p meaning all other versions are a scaled
    messy waste of time(not sure about psp screen options though). Only ps1
    and saturn versions look correct through an OSSC at proper integer scaling options with scanlines. Love the channel btw.

I have fond memories of my cousin ripping through the PlayStation release of SFA3 when we were in high school, but moving to the Sega platforms is really something else. When Capcom bring the Street Fighter Zero arcade series here to Mexico in the nineties we know it as that, SF Zero instead of SF Alpha as was name it at the USA, for me it's nostalgic to hear the intro "Street Fighter Zero" into the japanese console versions, because all the American continent console versions were named as "Alpha".

      I think the name Street Fighter Zero sounds cooler. I've never liked the Alpha name. Nice that in Mexico you got the correct name.

    Time to be honest: SFZ3U had shitty controls. You can't do the safe fall which requires pressing ALL THREE PUNCHES. The default colors aren't assigned to the A Button. No picking 2P side. No offline versus...

      You mean the Gba port, right?

    I have the GBA port.. it was a huge disappointment.. although it was ambitious.. it failed in every department.. scaled and ugly graphics.. horrible cheesy 8bit rendition of the soundtrack (compare it to circle of the moon and you will found yourself astonished it was the same hardware..).. scaled down buttons and combos.. and the general feeling to be back into the gameboy original era of wannabes games that were not due to hardware limitations.. but it was nearly the years of the psp graphics era.. it was so humuliating.. no real 3d.. no 2d at its best.. no memory for large games.. now I see what a mistake was compared to the ds the hardware the gba!

      While it's true that the GBA port is severely gimped compared to other ports we have to remember how crappy the hardware was when it came to games like this. The GBA was basically a SNES with the speed of a slightly faster Super FX 2 chop and really crappy sound chip. I think this port is rather good all things concidering.

      I agree with you.. it was not a bad port but a showcase of the gba already obsolete tech.. meanwhile at Sony they were already digging out the psp hardware from the scratch. Again Nintendo won thanks to their past gb vision of low profile but strong portability and battery endurance but it was in these years that they showed some cracks..
      It is another story that psp was destroyed by its d joystick choice through 2d fighting games maniacs.. it was such a shame!

      Nintendo have been pathetic since the N64. If it wasn't for their hand held consoles they'd be gone by now.

      @@RetroCore Since the GBA uses part of the CPU for the already bad sound, at times, it can be EVEN SLOWER than a SNES. That and it only has 1/4th of the RAM of the SNES. GBA is even more pathetic than you think... it's insane how weak the hardware is.

      Remember that the GBA game was released in 2002, four years before the PSP version. One other thing to know was that at this time the handheld market was slowly evolving into 16-Bit/32-Bit territory so games released for GBA are around late Super NES and early PS1 quality. While the SFA3 port for GBA may not be impressive from a home console perspective, from a handheld perspective it is quite impressive especially around the time of 2002 before the dawn of the internet era.
      For a 2002 handheld port of Alpha 3 this game is superb. Though you don't get every features from the other home ports, what you do get trumps over every other portable fighting games at the time. In 2002 SFA3 for GBA is the only handheld fighting game that features a massive roster of over 36 playable characters, 7 modes of play, 15 unique stages, and lots of unlockable bonus features. When this game launch for GBA, the DS and PSP doesn't exist yet and having late PS1 to early PS2 quality games on handheld won't happen until 2004 & 2005 with the DS and PSP. To get the same hardware and specs with PS1, N64, and Dreamcast quality in handheld form in 2001 is very expensive and will hurt the GBA more than it help as rechargeable batteries, backlit screens, and better rams are not available for the handheld market yet.
      It's not like today where you could just buy off the shelve parts, order custom hardware, and just use free emulation software to run games.
