- Here are the updated list top 10 biggest Mall in Southeast Asia as of November 2021. It was measured based on gross leasable Area. Shopping Malls is a big part of ASEAN culture. Knowing that half of the world biggest shopping centers, are located in the Region.
Mall update:
Ikea Philippines, tagged as the biggest Ikea Store in the world located with-in SM Mall of Asia will open this November 25, 2021. This will make SM Mall of Asia, as a largest shopping mall in the country. Located at Bay City, Pasay, Philippines, near the SM Central Business Park at the Manila Bay, and Southern end of Edsa.
It has a land area of 67 hectares or (170 acres), and a gross floor area of approximately 589,891 m2, and offers 46,647 m2 for conventions and social functions. The area attracts a daily average foot traffic of about 200,000 people. The newest offering of SM mall of Asia, is the biggest Ikea Store in the world at present with a total leasable area of 157,000 square meter with 65,000 square-meter of floor area. The store opens on November 25, 2021.
One Utama, is the largest shopping mall in Malaysia and the 9th largest shopping mall in the world. The first phase of the mall, now known as the Old Wing, was opened in September 1995. With the increase in customer traffic, and demand for retail spaces inside the mall, a second phase called "New Wing" was added in 2003. An additional expansion of 592,015 square feet or 55,000 m2 was added in 2018 with the addition of 1 Utama E. Today, the mall houses multiple retail areas, restaurants, cafes, sports facilities, a rainforest, and a bus station with national and international services.

I love SM Seaside City Cebu. It's my favorite destination.
There are a lot of big malls in the Philippines that are not yet included in the list like Ayala mall bay area, Glorietta, Robinsons Galleria, Robinsons Manila, and Solenad Nuvali.
Those Malls are smaller compared to what had been enlisted.

It could be for floor area, measurement used in the ranking is the leasable area, park and garden in between were not included in this measurements.

Many Robinson Malls, Ayala Malls, and Gaisano Malls located in Visyas n Mindanao such as in Cebu City, Davao City, Cagayan de Oro City in PHILIPPINES that have larger malls compare than Grand Venice Canal Mall - Philippines.

I think the basketball arena and the convention centers are not counted in the GLA of Mall of Asia. There are also nearby hotels owned by SM which I think are not counted as part of the mall.
I know that some malls like the Central World count the hotels as part of the mall. If this is the case, then why not count the condo units as well since some malls have condo units nearby built by their parent company?
The Robinson's Galleria in Mandaluyong City have hotels and office units attached to the mall. They are not counted as part of the mall. There should be a standard way of measuring the size of the mall. If any other structures aside from the mall itself are counted in the mall size, then it should applied to all the other malls as well.
The basketball arena you are talking about is a multi-purpose arena. It is part of the mall because it also hosts concerts and other big events, the idea behind that is that they want to have a bigger multipurpose hall so they can accommodate more people and organize big events that a typical mall can't do.

Simple answer.....or one of the main reasons why....The over 2 million OFW's who send money or remit money to families back in the Philippines...which is around 35 Billion dollars each year.....they spend and spend ...while the OFW's keep sending them spending money.....ha.ha.ha....plus other Filipinos who had settled abroad like me who never forgets to send gifts in cash or remittance...Why do you think there are almost remittance centers or padala centers in the Philippines...Palawan, Lehuiller, LBC, Western Union, Remitly, and many many other Money Changers....Money flowing in for them to shop. Where do you Think these Filipinos get their shopping Money.....There are around 10 million Filipinos living outside the Philippines...so....just imagine each Filipino sends 1k a year ....that alone......etc...etc...etc...ha.ha.ha..

I saw a youtube video about Bangkok Mall. It has been under construction since 2014. There will be an arena, an amusement park (water park) and a 53-storey office tower. The arena, water park and the office tower are not really part of the mall. Plus 250,000 m2 is a car park building.
Developers are cheating just to have the bragging right of having the biggest mall. Mall of Asia actually has a convention center, a basketball arena, hotels, office buildings and condo units near it but they are not counted as part of the mall. MOA itself as a mall is really huge.

SM City Fairview in Novaliches Lungsod Quezon, Metro Manila still have to be included. It has already expanded and added gross floor of leasable area.
Why many people are excited about the biggest malls. i'm Thai and i know many Thai people also tourist are mostly prefer best and unique malls design and function must come first. we have many Luxury malls not only in Bangkok but we have all around in Thailand and sonly you will see ONE BANGKOK (and maybe come with Apple Store 3rd) and The Emsphere ( maybe Apple Store 4th)

The Philippines also have luxury malls thats not included in the biggest malls. Luxury malls are usually regular-sized but are luxurious nonetheless. If the Philippines have so many giant malls, it also means that they have a lot of luxury malls too.

Indonesia tidak masuk Mall terbesar di ASEAN... tapi Jakarta menjadi kota dengan mall terbanyak di dunia, setiap mall memilki tema yang berbeda, dari mulai mall anak muda, hingga mall eksekutif, mall grosir, hingga mall khusus pelayanan umum pemerintah, dan tersebar di setiap distrik kecamatan Jakarta
Dimasa pandemi banyak mall sepi bahkan ada yang Tutup. Ditambah lagi minat masyarakat indonesia bergeser dari suka belanja ke mall menjadi suka belanja di On line shop. Kita sedang menuju budaya Digitalisasi . Justru bagus bila mall diindonesia makin habis digitalisasi semakin cepat, orang gk ada kerjaan yg suka nongkrong di mall pun akan dipaksa lebih produktif .

saya masuk mall pun krn mau byr perpanjangan stnk hehehe
warga philipina suka pergi ke mall krn adem dan nggak cuma utk jalan2 tapi juga nonton, belanja dan ke gereja
padahal mrk juga punya byk pantai tapi sepertinya selera mrk beda dg kita yg suka main air hehehe
waktu tahu ikea di philipina tuh byk banget saya kok mikir emang di philipina nggak ada pengrajin kayu dan bambu yg bisa kita beli produknya tanpa harus ke mall ikea?
