  • There is a red "9" on the grip panel of a 9mm Mauser for a good reason. 9mm ammunition will chamber and fire in a 7.63 pistol.

    Some years ago, my Dad was friends with a 'retired' gunsmith. When this gunsmith ran a shop, he had a customer come in with a Mauser 712 that was shooting poorly. Upon being asked what ammo he was shooting, the customer presented a box of domestic 9X19; his pistol was 7.63... Apparently, the customer had fed two successive clips of 9X19 through the Mauser before deciding that there was a problem. Our gunsmith, familiar with the C96 series of pistols, could find no damage. I think that we can conclude that these are TOUGH pistols! I'm very glad that You didn't have a catastrophic failure / injury!

    One of the advantages of good old fashioned design from the late 1800's and early 1900's; it was made to last. A modern pistol would have exploded but this old boy just yeeted the bullet straight thru the barrel flattening it in the process. This is kind of a meme but not really seeing as they really did emphasize the durability and ruggedness of their products back then. This thing was called a box-cannon in China and in many ways, it really is a miniature hand-held cannon machined out of a solid block of steel. I'm currently waiting for a C96 that I bought online to arrive, though I must say I won't be trying your little experiment myself. :D

      I am German, but an American friend of mine got a 7.63mm Mauser as a present from a friend of his. He didn’t know it was 7.63mm and started shooting it with 9 mil. He complained about poor accuracy a couple of times, but proceeded shooting it with 9x19mm for another month or two without ever checking the gun itself. (don’t ask me why though. When I ask him, he always rolls his eyes and starts talking about having been an idiot.) Some day he finally went to a gunsmith that could immediately tell him what the issue was. He also checked the on the gun and couldn’t find anything. He (the gunsmith) then allegedly mumbled: „You could probably shoot it with 9 millimeter Parabellum for as long as you want. That gun is a fucking beast!“
      So basically, does that mean you can shoot 9mm through a 7.63mm pistol without damaging it? Would be worth an endurance test…

    • @life_of_riley88
      @life_of_riley88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically "proof testing" is just firing a round loaded to a specifically higher chamber pressure that the firearm was designed for. I would say that the owner in this case "proof tested" his chamber just fine, as I'm sure the pressure generated by extruding a 9mm into 7.63mm causes some seriously high pressures.

    Several years ago I read an interesting discussion on one of the forums about the mysterious "experimental" Mausers C96 in caliber 8.15 mm, which sometimes appear on sale. In the discussion, the opinion was justified that these 8.15 mm Mausers are actually 7.63mm pistols from which 9mm cartridges were fired. Here's a quote from that discussion:
    "I have come to the conclusion that when a 9mm parabellum round is fired through a 7.63mm C96, the residual barrel diameter will be right around 8.15mm. I have had this theory for several years and believe it to be correct. Whenever I have examined an 8.15mm C96, there has always been a very slight bulge near the chamber, and it can be very, very slight, so as to be un-noticeable to the untrained eye. ... I have thought about conducting an experiment myself to verify my hypothesis, but have not been able to get around to it. WWI era lead rounds would be the desired ammunition for such an experiment rather than modern day copper-jacketed ones." .

    I bought a Mauser C96 7.63 pistol from a company called Oyster Bay that was converting these into the more popular 9 mm back in the mid-eighties, by reaming out the barrel and rifling it to the slightly larger 9 mm. It did not function correctly, constantly jamming when feeding, showing how closely these gun's action tolerances must be. The gun shop owner I bought it from refunded me after the company accepted a return, kept it for two weeks, then shipped it back out, still jamming. He recommended i just buy a proper 9 mm newer version, which were twice as expensive.

      That's a myth that has been long debunked. It came from the Bulgarian early 70's made 7.62 ammo that was made too hot for even the CZ52 pistols. The ammo powder was also sub par and as it got about 10 years old the surplus ammo would get hotter after the chemical breakdown of the powder. There were several other countries in the Com Bloc that this happened to so it is advised not to shoot it in the Mauser unless you know the manufacturer and years made. The Bulgarian ammo is also known as "Pink Ammo" because the separating paper in the box is pink distinguishing from other manufacturers and no matter year made should be avoided at all costs in your Mauser.
      The original specs on the 7.63 Mauser is Bullet weight 86 Gr FMJ with factory load, Muzzle Velocity 1,410 fps, Muzzle Energy 375 FP's. The 7.62 Tokarev specs are Bullet weight 87 Gr FMJ with factory load, Muzzle Velocity 1,390 fps, Muzzle Energy 365 FP's. There is a whole book out now about this myth.
      My source is "Cartridges of The World" Page 222, 30 (7.63x25mm) mauser and page 221, 7.62x25mm Russian Tokarev.

    • @bad74maverick1
      @bad74maverick1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hunters36forgingwoodworkin73 Yes that is correct. You have to be SURE of your ammo. I still err on the side of caution and generally don't shoot it in mine because I have so much of it. If I have good production ammo like Chech ammo I will use it. What I am saying is that myth has been busted. There was a run of Yugo ammo that is a bit warmer. I would shoot NO, ABSOLUTELY NO Bulgarian ammo in mine. Pink wrapper or not!!!!!!! Another problem the C96 has isn't necessarily the ammo, its the wear on the pistols themselves. If it has excessive wear then any ammo can "Batter" the gun until failure, that's why I swapped all my springs for new made ones. I still suggest Sellier and Bellot ammo designated for the 7.63 Mauser. But yes, if confident and after research and education if you have com bloc ammo with a good reputation, it will shoot just fine. Just do your research. That ammo was designed to be shot out of a 4.7" barrel so the longer barrel of the C96 which is 5.5" is going to be negligible where pressure is concerned. the 6 groove rifling should actually help with accuracy with some of the com bloc stuff with bullet stabilization.
      You MUST be sure of your ammo!!! I am posting this merely to dispel the myth of the 7.62 being different than the 7.63. Originally they were designed the same. There were certain blocs of mis-manufactured ammo which caused this debate to start.
