- Hey Horse Lovers! WOW you are in for an INTERESTING day here at Free Spirit Farm. WE got SLAMMED with some massive snow here in Michigan and today we get to ride and have fun playing with the horses in the snow. The snow looked absolutely gorgeous. My student and I started off the day with a trail ride in the fluffy white snow. We decided to take Arlo and Olaf out. We were having the best ride eve THEN something went terribly wrong. It was a very scary experience. Watch to see what happens!!!!!! As always Enjoy the ride! -Shae

Things happen and you have a good teacher. Piper you kept a level head to keep yourself safe too and right back on. It was a beautiful day and a memory to write down in your diary. If we didn’t have these moments our books would be empty! ⛄️💕❄️ PS I’ve had a few moments in my lifetime too 😂picking snow out of my pants🤭
😊 I'm 70 and no longer able to ride, but I must say this is the best video where I could be you in the saddle and enjoy this wonderful ride. My horse, Apache, had to be the lead horse always and riding in the snow my favorite. Thank you
So glad no one got hurt,. Beautiful scenery, loved seeing Arlo's beautiful mane. Fresh snow on a cloudy day was majestic. Good job Piper. Maybe in merch....you could have a line of headbands 😍😍😍😍😍😍.

Naughty little Olaf! The snow zoomies got to him and he just had to go go go back to the barn. :D Piper though! What a star! And I'm obsessed with Arlo's mane! I'm a sucker for tricolor manes and tails. AND I have to say seeing Prince C. running in the field in this video and in your barn day video is truly amazing. The difference between the way he moved in his auction video and now is mindblowing. Your love, devotion and care let that naturally stunningly gorgeous trot/canter shine.

Shae really knows what she's doing, bringing out the best in rehab of Prince Charming. What a change, you're right! I remember those frozen blueberry packs on his hindquarter.

This is actually my first time seeing a couple of expert equestrians go into the freezing snow on horses and, on the fly, Piper knew to dismount as Olaf had a mind of his own and wanted to go back to the barn. Kudos 💯Piper 💯 and keep up the great riding!

Never a dull moment at Free Spirit Equestrian Farm. Even your neighbors get in on the excitement. We used to be in a tight farming community and everyone enjoyed that organic cooking right out of the fields. Like you and Kyle had in Mexico.
The weather sucks here but at least it's not a frost advisory, with ice shards sticking to your glasses or clothes. Just overcast which justified that second cup of organic Arabica medium roast brew. You handle stress well! A runaway horse reminds me of the runaway car I had once, but being quick on the feet, I could catch up with it rolling and slammed the brakes, lol! 😀
Omg! so fun watching them run free, Prince Charming must be pretty much all healed up? He looks so happy running….
Yes he’s doing great! He’s healed now just continued strengthening.
All the horses running together, in the fresh snow, it was magical to watch! It makes my heart happy, because your auction horses won the lottery, they have a such wonderful life, with kind training, exceptional care, a great home and lots of love from their two beautiful owners! I have been on several horses throughout my life who have gone into what we call a "dead run". They get something in their head and they want to head home usually. But it can be very dangerous because if you cross a road you can be hit by a car obviously. What I learned, is if you grab one of the reins and pull the horse's face to their rear end, they will stop. They will slow down anyway. You just have to lean in a little bit the way you are pulling. I had to bail off as a kid but then I learned about that little trick💓🏇, (pulling the face to the rear end). It really does work like a charm.

❤so far never had to bail. Just kept working with horse until it calmed down and allowed me to regain control

That’s my moms house Olaf ran too! We grew up there so glad you still do horses the Elliot’s original owners taught us to ride years ago. Glad Olaf is safe.

Olaf didn’t do a thing wrong, horses don’t think like that. He didn’t bolt or take off he likes to move out and that’s that. There was not a negative thought or punishment involved. It’s not being a pushover it’s understanding how a horse’s mind works. I know you mean well but just explaining my take on it since I was there haha! It was a fun day! Buzz is in with half the herd. I’m not letting him go with the entire herd right now. This spring or summer I will. 😂❤️❤️
@@freespiritequestrian if you ever make a video about when to emergency dismount I'd be interested. I had a few traumatic times when horses "ran away" with me on them. I guess I felt responsible to stay on and get THEM home safely, and/ or I didn't think it was safe to try and do the emergency dismount (full on gallop.) I guess one learns to stay calm enough to assess and choose safest course of action?

Oh,I LOVED riding in the snow!Sadly we don't get real winters anymore,in the north of Germany....but back then,in the early 90ies,I cantered through the small town,very slowly with my mare,on a thick layer of fresh snow on the streets💓She only cantered,wasn't able to just walk slow😂It is such a beautiful memory in my head💓

Yes things happen like that all the time. But it's nice when nothing bad happens and it turns into a laughable memory. Good job Piper! and awesome job neighbors for helping out. I love your positive attitude, most instructors would be angry and would end the ride without giving the student another chance... it's very sad. But thankfully you are extremally kind and understanding. Awesome job!!

The snow is so beautiful and Arlo and Olaf are super cute :) I miss my heart horse Felix so much. I wish I could ride him again, sadly I lost him last year, but was able to go and see him one last time.

Savor these days when your youth allows to get out and enjoy time in the saddle in all weathers.. After 55 years of riding, time, and many injuries have caught up to me. As I type this I am looking at my saddles that now sit, mostly idle on stands here on the mud porch. I still appreciate that on warm days I can get out and take my 25 year old Haflinger/QH cross blue roan mare for a drive with my Amish road cart. ( I have a short video of driving her on my channel) I love your videos and your enthusiasm. Thanks.

I remember riding a Shetland pony bareback in the snow many years ago. It was so nice and warm sitting on his fuzzy back and we even took a few jumps. I think he had more fun than I did 😛! Oh, to be young again and relive those days…. Thanks for the memories Shae 🥰!

The snow is so pretty and being able to ride in it on the trails is magnificent. Olaf did fine - he wanted to go to the barn and he was in a hurry. You have some great horses. That do very well on trail ridges. Look at them playing. It reminds me of the wild mustangs running and playing.

I thought the same thing, glad Piper had some fluffy snow to land on! What a beautiful ride however, wow. This makes me want to move myself and my horses to MICHIGAN. Or any place that gets snow, especially around Christmas time. But I loved it when we got a nice blanket of snow here California years ago in March! That was unusual. Love your horse Argo. So glad you had fun despite the "horsing" around. Piper was very brave to get back on and continue the ride. Sometimes new riders get scared and stop riding and I'm glad she got back on. As she learns confidence and balance she will improve her riding skills. Good job.
She’s pretty balanced and gallops/jumps Olaf almost 3ft. This was just something that happened. This wasn’t anything to do with riding skills. This happens to everyone no matter how skilled you are. ❤️

Oh my gosh! I’m glad that Piper is okay 😊 Kind of a scary situation! What a trooper to get back on tho 👏👏👏 Horses can be unpredictable for sure and luckily Olaf stayed close to home and thankful your neighbours helped with the fencing. The scenery was gorgeous and it’s crazy how snow can make everything look different, the heaviness of the snow hanging the branches quite low. I was like whoa when you were walking thru them 😅. Your music choice was fantastic as you let the herd run out the back pasture, it was so amazing watching them all ❤❤❤ Have a wonderful day ❄️❄️❄️

The trail seems "branchier" because the weight of the snow is pushing the branches down into the path where they wouldn't normally be . What a beautiful ride though. I'm glad it all turned out well!
I know I said that in the video, I meant the trail was more overgrown than usual. Not just because of the snow on the branches lol

He ran behind the field a ways down and then ran back up behind my property at my neighbors house.

Brrr, looks really cold! Makes the below freezing weather we're having in Oregon seem warm! I've ridden in snow plenty of times, so I know how snow and ice can weigh branches down to face level or lower and make for a wet ride. Part of riding is taking things as they come, and you all did great.

A day riding in the snow is better than almost anything. Saddle time is better than almost everything I can think of. Almost, maybe cheesecake might run a close tie

What a beautiful winter background. Arlo matched the background colors, so beautiful. So sorry you had to go through that fear of where's Olaf, I could see it in your eyes. Thankfully Olaf just tried to go home, what a smart boy. At least you got to enjoy the rest of your ride and yes it's a beautiful winter wonderland. Watching all the horses run and play is just so gorgeous, they are the perfect herd. Every one of the horses is magnificent and stunning, I love them all!!

This reminds me of the time I came home from the grocery-turned the bend in the road and there were our two quarter horses out in the middle of the road!! Thank GOD no other cars had come along on this country road!! It was the only time they had “escaped”-but I sure freaked at the sight of them as they got out from the back 5 acres, crossed an acre of the front lawn, and were “exploring” all on their own....so funny, but ONLY because nothing bad happened!!

I had a 4 year old mustang chestnut mare named Summer Wine that pulled a slay and also broke to ride. We also had a purebred Arabian Bay gelding 16 hands high, broke to ride. Gorgeous horse.
