We keep getting the argument that in the old days players had to take hard challenges from defenders.
We must remember that in the Messi era, there was a huge boom in video analysis, statistics, and tactics. Messi was thoroughly studied by managers all over the world and anti-Messi strategy was adopted by most of the teams he played against.
The only reason Messi continued to be successful was because he kept adapting to these strategies and kept evolving.
He used to score solo goals, then he went to chipped goals, then he went to scoring tons of freekicks, then he got great at taking penalties, as he got old, he got great at conserving energy and participated more in buildup play.
I never agreed with Shaka's judgement because you can't base a player's ability on just one trophy .

All of Frank's points about Pele can be countered, especially when he talks about protection etc. Defenders in those days were big and slow brawlers, and goal keepers were part time bin men so it's much easier to dribble and score against that type of opposition. My point is that defenders, defending, goal keeping and all round play is much more advanced/technical/athletic making it harder to score, therefore Pele and Maradona would've struggled as it's much easier to dribble around big slow brutes who don't defend but try and kick you.

I keep seeing people, always those who think Pele & Maradona are the GOAT, misuse the 'soft tackles/soft fouls' criticism argument. True the tackles were harder and fouls were more frequent. But the vast majority of those defenders making those tackles and committing those fouls didn't have the ability, speed, strength, endurance, skill, fitness & access to coaching, training, exercise, diet, health, etc of today's defenders. As such it's just an example of how things are different, that's all, not harder or easier, JUST different. That's all.

If anything I'd argue that Maradona would have a harder time today than Messi in say the 80s (because of who Diego was as a person). The games are faster, tactical and players are proper athletes. I did argue with my older brother a couple years back that players from past generations DID NOT have protection like modern era soccer is. If soccer had protection in past generations then R9 (original Ronaldo) would be in the GOAT talk because his career would be prolonged. However, given all that Messi has done for the soccer world and his country, he is the GOAT (his skill is NOT inferior to any big names AND he played overlapping positions that he, as a midfielder, should not have been with outstanding performance that other big names COULD NOT DO).

I understand the aggressive playing style in the past but you should acknowledge the drastic improvement of tactics and managers. You're obviously young and don't know anything about the landscape of football before the 80s when South American and Brazilian football was the most dominant force on the planet. Pele proved himself in every competition he played in... World Cup, Libertadores, Rio-Sao Paulo, Paulista, Taca Brasil, Intercontinental Cup, Copa America.

@@gabrielalohan728 the quality of football now is at a higher level but you also can't ignore how much more physical the game was back then where players didn't get nearly as much protection as they do now when it comes to tackles and bad fouls. All in all, it's very difficult to compare one era against another so one can just base their assumptions on the actual accomplishments each player achieved at their respective time. Hence when people say winning 3>1 WC, that argument is totally reasonable imo.
