“Strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand” - exactly the vibe of the Dead Show crowd! First show in 74’, just 17, realized you could walk up to anyone and start a friendly chat. So many cool people, a revolution, an evolutionary leap toward a better humanKIND.
Man, that line hits me hard right now during the pandemic. Listening to this I was already weeping about Jerry, then that line was like a punch in the gut. I miss interacting with strangers in person. My first dorm room in college, I wrote a different line from this song around the top of (my half of the) dorm room in what I thought was purple chalk. The last day of the school year, moving out of that dorm room, I realized that it had apparently been purple oil pastel. I still remember standing on a chair in that empty room, my dad waiting impatiently for me in the car, trying to use toilet tissue and laundry soap to clean that off so I wouldn’t be fined. It was worth it. Great line. “Once in awhile you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.”
tamarleigh ~ yeah, that's another good line. Tried to think of an example; sort of like synchronicity but not exactly. Maybe how our car broke down in tiny town in Utah near the Bonneville Salt Flats with one little diner and a gas station. We hiked up a barren mountainside and found a cave to camp out in for a few days while the car got worked on and hung out at that weird diner with lots of pictures of speed record - breaking vehicles from the salt flats course. Upshot being, after that I could always remember how I " spent the night in Utah in a cave up in the hills" !
Yup! I remember feeling so safe and not judged AT ALL at those shows❤There was nothing like a Grateful Dead Concert...remember the balloons we used to play with😊
My first dead tape, it was given to me in 1992. I was 13 and i was hooked. Europe 72 is the greatest album ever, in my opinion. I seen them twice in 95.
As a big Grateful Dead fan I have to say that I dont necessarily agree that folks should be checking out the live versions. Yes they are known for that but whats important here is the quality of the singing and songwriting which is best exemplified by the studio versions, Europe 72 being the exception.
I'm with you for sure on the studio versions for new comers, usually shorter and tighter, the studio version of Uncle Johns Band was where the fuse was lit for me, and once the fuse starts burning there's no stopping it
It’s interesting that the top Spotify song are thematically similar in their vibe. They do have a much broader sound than those would indicate. Personal favorites: Terrapin Station Box of Rain Estimated Prophet Black Muddy River
Its only better for jams but not when it comes to appreciating the songs and the vocals. I prefer the studio Scarlet Begonias as a song because the groove is so loose and syncopated, unlike the 2-drummer versions that sound plodding and kinda clunky
@@timcardona9962 Which "2 drummer plodding version" are you referring to? There are HUNDREDS. Their music has always been about the live experience. Their studio stuff is like reading the NFL rule book. Sure, it's good to know. But it's definitely not the game.
If you need some more Dead songs to react to here''s a few: Truckin', Deal, U.S. Blues, Stagger Lee, Cumberland Blues, Playing In The Band, Sugar Magnolia, Sunshine Daydream, Shakedown Street, Fire On The Mountain, and The Other One. There are only about 400 more songs to go. Try to listen to live concert versions, that is where the boys really shine. By the way, Grateful Dead are from the San Francisco Bay Area, Cali Baby!
“The Sky was Yellow and the Sun was Blue” is a way of looking at the world thru a different pair of lenses. Sometimes when something good happens in your life, it turns your life upside down. Robert Hunter, who wrote the lyrics was very poetic and had a unique perspective on his view of the world in regards to this song in particular.
It's like beg-OWN-yas. Begonias are a type of flower with many beautiful colors, including scarlet. I've een this song sung live b4 Jerry passed... It's my fave dance tune, in concert. Welcome to the Dead 🇨🇦👌 RIP JERRY
Ms. Ren, I could talk about the Grateful Dead with ya all day. The thing the Dead didn't invent, but really perfected and were known for was "stringing" songs together. They had a repertoire of 100's of songs they knew, most originals. When they played live, the first song would merge into the second song, just musically become the next song, and that song would eventually drift into the next song, to the next and so on for the whole set. These jams between songs might last 2 minutes, might last 20 minutes, you never knew what to expect. They would play for 90 to 100 minutes and they'd do 7 or 8 songs and the music would never stop until the set was done. It was a musical journey where the listener traveled into and out of different songs. I'd suggest picking a live set of theirs, play that all the way thru, and comment on how you're feeling about it as the show moves along. Be glad to give you some suggestions.
Hi Ren, thanks for reacting. If no one has said so already, the Grateful Dead hail from the San Francisco area, and are known for being "the pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world". Essentially they started the Jam Band genre.
Ren, you missed the most important lyric in this song. "Once in a while you get shown the light, In the strangest of places when you look at it right" & that is a truism when it comes to the Grateful Dead. Over the years their sound has developed with each & every album. Early stuff was often R&B through psychedelic rock & then onto more country influenced albums. Later albums could broadly be described as jazz & some with tinges of reggae. Others are more difficult to describe while some of the last albums were more commercial sounding. Terrapin Station even had orchestral & choir pieces. The Dead were, with little doubt, the best covers band. With Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan & the Rolling Stones' songs. among others, to add to their vast catalogue, the good old Grateful Dead could leave their audiences with no doubts why they came to see the live shows. Never the same twice.
To truly experience it you have to listen to a whole live concert. The way they weave the songs together, and transitions between songs is truly what makes them unique
Begonias are flowers. "She wore Scarlet Begonias, tucked into her curls, and I knew right away, she was not like other girls, other girls" The girl had flowers in her hair. I would encourage you to revisit the Dead later and often! You're ready to graduate to some live shows! Start with the Europe 72 album, you won't be sorry!
First time listeners should listen to the studio version. Some of the live takes could cause them to space out a bit.A lot were over 10 minutes and you could play them 2 studio songs on that amount of time
For something a little different try Grateful Dead's Eyes Of The World and Estimated Prophet for jazz and reggae . Shakedown Street is also a different vibe . Mr Charlie for a Cajun feel . Man's Smart Woman's Smarter and Crazy Fingers for Calypso . Space or Dark Star for a mellow ambient feel ( good for trees ) . The Dead's well of music is deep . And blues try Hurts Me Too . Chinatown Shuffle is a must hear . Enjoy !
You asked "is this what their songs sound like thru their whole career?" you couldn't be more wrong. Jerry Garcia (lead guitar, vocals, composer) once said: "we make shitty albums". You need to listen to what they did on stage live to understand at least a little of what this band was all about. "They're a band beyond description Like Jehovah's favorite choir. People joinin' hand in hand While the music plays the band. Lord, they're setting us on fire." th-cam.com/video/xnZJZm8AMRk/w-d-xo.html
It's part of the song because he's talking about things that may or may not be real and that other people's perceptions may be different man. So if the sky was yellow and the sun was blue it rhymed first of all with the next line. And also it's very poetic. It's pretty
They have a certain style and they have a background vibe going through all of their songs which was a very important thing in music back then and especially with jam bands. It's a signature kind of deal

The Grateful Dead do kind of always sound like the Grateful Dead and the most popular songs certainly exemplify this, but they also spanned a wide range of musical influences from country to folk, bluegrass, jazz, rock, funk, all kind of meshed together. The thing that the Dead are really known for is the epic 15 minute space jams and segue from song to song to song without stopping, which comes through on the live material but not really their studio material.. Check out this Eyes of the World from 1974, it's a pretty great example of the jam-band ethos that the grateful Dead basically invented. th-cam.com/video/lDfnJzHLYvk/w-d-xo.html
Ren, the best stuff by the Dead was always live. Most of their best stuff was not even released until somewhat recently, although I admit I've had thousands of their boots for years. Check out some of the live stuff on youtube. The 40 minute psychedelic jams are stupendous. The Grateful Dead were the best jam band past, present and future.
Frank C is correct when he says that you need to hear a live performanc. You can find them all over TH-cam. The most recent incarnation of the Grateful Dead is Dead and Company, which is John Mayer on Lead Guitar instead of Jerry, and the bass player and the keyboardist are not original band members. The best live concert to really appreciate them is Cornell 1977. Here is the link. th-cam.com/video/T9L9ZZsjpWM/w-d-xo.html
No don’t pay attention to what Spotify says!! This band plays the best live music ever. People followed them all over the world. Play live from concerts!! Start with eyes of the world 10 19 74 and check the music they had in the sixties when pig pen was in band. Easy wind and good morning little school girl.
Look for those same 5 songs but LIVE versions. Then you will see what they are capable of. Not all their music sounded the same throughout the years but they are way DOPE. They never play your favorite song the same way. They always change up big time. Thanks for this review.
On the other hand if you've eaten enough magic mushrooms I'm sure this guy might be yellow in the sun might be blue honestly this guy is yellow most of the time if you think about it and the sun well that's never blue but hey maybe it's feeling blue hahaha
No it is not all mellow accoustive vibe. Some is for sure, then there's the jugband music, the jazz, the funk... the blues (Etta James says they're the baddest blued band in the world you can see that here ==> th-cam.com/video/G_zKuqHzYks/w-d-xo.html Etta with The Dead is something you can never forget!!!) and even regage [Estimated Prophet] they're also 10th gear melt-your-face psychedelic magic!!! You really ought to listen to a full dead show. They cover all the bases, two lead singers, "Drums and Space" they take you up, then let you gently come down only to rock it once more then git the stratosphere agian. Like Bill Graham once sais "They're not the best at what they do they're the only ones who do it!" The Dead are magic. Even Dead & Company (Jerry RIP is replaced by John Mayer, that will blow your mind as well--- check Dead&Co live!! Full shows on youtube like crazy!!)
Everyone's gonna tell you live dead is where it's at, not so much studio-- I'm in that camp too-- and while your review of Scarlet is bang on-- has anyone suggested to you to listen to 'arguably' the most famous Scarlet/Fire he GD ever did? th-cam.com/video/luAqu8VX5wo/w-d-xo.html over the years Scarlet Begonias got married to Fire on the Mountain another luscious dead tune. If you listen to the above link th-cam.com/video/luAqu8VX5wo/w-d-xo.html its a pretty seamless merger of awesomeness. As you now know-- one in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right!!
I just heard you mention Deep Purple. If you want to hear some Deep Purple that blows you away, check out the live performance of Child in Time (with video) from 1970. It is epic.
There are a lot of other aspects of them-not all of the Dead’s stuff is as mellow as the 5 songs you chose. But as someone else said, to really listen to the Dead, you have to listen to them live...
ba-gone-yas (a as in 'ah'). Album versions are OK, but the GDs best recordings (and experiences) are LIVE! And that is some very good improv jamming! Live, this song might last 10 minutes or more...
This song is also wonderful but you really need to listen to more live music they're so much better on the live shows and there's a lot of them on TH-cam.Live music is where they shine that's what will make you dance. And when you listen to them, It's all right to get up and move around, dance like nobody's watching!
I never enjoyed or even understood dancing, until I experienced the Dead. Didn't dance at my wedding. But the Dead pulled it out of me at my 2nd concert. I danced for 3 hours on a sprained ankle. I've never known such joy.
there other times in different concerts if you would hear them that they play the same songs much faster and then they sound different period and furthermore you might want to check out different songs from the same band because they do sound different they don't always sound mellow like that
Pause a little, just to keep the copyright hounds at bay. Cover up videos if you put them up, with something that obscures them. Some bands are just blockers, and there isn't much you can do. Put those videos on Patreon and make side money that way. Stream your reactions live, so people can donate.
Those 5 songs sound almost nothing like the Grateful Dead. Those are all great songs but you have to listen to some live dead. That’s where the magic happens.
You gotta throw on some live Dead - that's where all of these songs really take off. Find the "Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain" from 5-8-77 and get ready for some serious funky greatness.

If you can sit down and go through 5 GD songs in a row, cold, and you are gettin' the vibe, then you should ready yourself for the rabbit hole of experiencing them from live recordings. So many people dismissed the Grateful Dead, wouldn't even give them a listen at all, even though they are argueably the best band to ever play. I love to see young people get into the Grateful Dead.........keepin' it real.
They were/are more than just a band..........it's an experience.....entertaining, inspirational, even theraputic, not to mention the community of it all as well.
Check out some live versions of songs.........depending on the era, the Grateful Dead sound different, roughly by each decade from the mid 60's to the mid 90's.
For the time being, I would stick with the 1970's
Live versions of some songs can be 10 or 15 minutes long, and if you're hoping to be launched away from the familiar sounds of your neighborhood or even mainstream music, there are several versions of "Dark Star" that can stretch to over a half an hour.............
But, for now...................
"Peggy-O" from Englishtown '77
or
"Mississippi Half-step Uptown Toodeloo" from Englishtown '77
"Brown-eyed Women"

Ren, the best stuff by the Dead was always live. Most of their best stuff was not even released until somewhat recently, although I admit I've had thousands of their boots for years. Check out some of the live stuff on youtube. The 40 minute psychedelic jams are stupendous. The Grateful Dead were the best jam band past, present and future.
Yep! Still gotta react to some live stuff. The majority of the Dead Heads have been saying that. 🤘🏾
You should check out some of the recent Dead and Company with John Mayer. A lot of the songs change long due to the name. Nice work.
They're talking about tripping on LSD. With the sky being yellow.
A begonias a real big pretty flowers
It's been said already but LIVE dead is the best way to get in to them try visions of johanna
Ren, Shakedown Street is the perfect song for a hip hop artist to sample from...take a listen, you’ll hear it too I promise
heart of gold band
Great tune! Watch some of their videos; it’s an experience!
You mentioned hip-hop and beat samples. Check out "Knock" by Jean Grae; the beat/riff is a sample of the Grateful Dead's "Help on the Way.
*From a Hip hop 🎧 Deadhead 💀⚡️* Check out Sublime’s cover of this song. You’ll love it. ☮️💜🎶
Like Bill Graham once sais "They're not the best at what they do they're the only ones who do it!"
The Dead are magic. Even Dead & Company (Jerry RIP is replaced by John Mayer, that will blow your mind as well--- check Dead&Co live!! Full shows on youtube like crazy!!)
Scarlet Begonias are red flowers.
Keep playing it sweet heart😍😍
Just like others have said. Live dead is where it’s at
Everyone's gonna tell you live dead is where it's at, not so much studio-- I'm in that camp too-- and while your review of Scarlet is bang on-- has anyone suggested to you to listen to 'arguably' the most famous Scarlet/Fire he GD ever did? th-cam.com/video/luAqu8VX5wo/w-d-xo.html over the years Scarlet Begonias got married to Fire on the Mountain another luscious dead tune.
It is epic.
Try Bob Seger’s Night Moves & Tom Petty’s Here Comes My Girl. Two more great musicians and great tunes.
I crave GD reactions! Thanks!
Please check out it hurts me too from Europe 72. The Grateful Dead are the greatest band ever.
Someone get this girl some mushrooms!!!
There's nothing wrong with the love that's in her eyes
Listen to Shakedown Street. It has a different vibe from the one's you've reacted to. Kinda funky borderline disco...
Ren, give Shakedown Street a listen...think you might really like
Such a jam
React to Shakedown Street!
I've never known such joy.
there other times in different concerts if you would hear them that they play the same songs much faster and then they sound different period and furthermore you might want to check out different songs from the same band because they do sound different they don't always sound mellow like that
Love ya sis 🤠🐚
Grateful dead fans are actually called dead heads.
💀 🌹 😜
check out - shakedown street - its all funk grateful dead
LOVE
The Dead has some great albums but they are known as a live band. Their studio records don't do them justice. Listen to some live Dead.
I'm a Deadhead 😍😍
Hi honey, Kellie from TeamOf3 channel here... love ur shirt... Great lighting and video💜💜
check out shake down street ,
Here is a better link to that Cornell '77 show; th-cam.com/video/ienZCBtPjWw/w-d-xo.html
