This is the best way to discover the Grateful Dead; get hooked on the studio songs first and then start diggin into the live stuff later. The studio versions are tighter and the vocals are always better so you get a better appreciation for the music. All it takes is one weak performance to turn someone off, like recently with another reactor
I agree. We need to not force the live versions on them too soon. Learn the songs, Learn to LOVE the songs, then you'll have a true appreciation for the live versions.
One of the best in all music. According to lyricist Hunter, Lesh "wanted a song to sing to his dying father and had composed a piece complete with every vocal nuance but the words. If ever a lyric 'wrote itself,' this did - as fast as the pen would pull."[2] Lesh practiced the song driving to the nursing home where his father lay with terminal cancer.
loved watching you vibe to this. loved your Donna impersonation. lot of folks will say you should check out their live performances, which you should in time, but I'd suggest starting with the older studio tracks. Check out Truckin' , Uncle John's Band, Brokedown Palace, Attics Of My Life, EASY WIND!!! welcome home. ♥♪♫♥
Nice introduction to the band. What's interesting is that their lyrics can mean different things to different people or different things to the same person over periods of time. The music is great for traveling, like you mentioned, both on the highway and in your own head. Try checking out Box of Rain, Eyes of the World or Brown Eyed Women.
Stick with the studio versions for a little while, and then move to the live versions where they string multiple songs together and go into mid-song jams for long lengths of time.
0:12 you had it right the first time I kept waiting for the verse from the version Sublime did 😂 A tie-dyed dress, she was a psychedelic mess We toured to the north, south, east and west We sold some mushroom tea, We sold some ecstasy, We sold nitrous, opium, acid, heroin and PCP And now I hear the police coming after me Yes now I hear the police coming after me The one scarlet with the flowers in her hair, She's got the police coming after me
Only got to see them about 50 times, wish I could have added a zero to that number, so I'm not lkie some DeadHeads, well into the hundreds of shows, but your reaction was classic, like you were at a show for the first time. Now, take that reaction and times it by all the people at the show, and you have a Grateful Dead concert. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is dancing. Eventually, even the security guards are moving. Sadly, when Guitarist/Vocalist/Songwriter/Reluctant Leader Jerry Garcia died in 1995, they broke up. The rest of the band have done lots of projects together over the years, and are still active today, but it is not the same. Grateful Dead played thousands of concerts, and they were all recorded by the fans, so there is tons of material available. Enjoy the ride.
If you get the chance to see Dead and Company, you should go. Is it the Grateful Dead? No. It's Dead and Company, and they are fantastic live. Usually a bit slower, but aren't we all at this point? LOL. I was hesitant, but there's still nothing in the world like a Dead show, and the spirit is alive and well. I can't wait for 2022 tour! I saw the Dead 25 times from 88-95, and Dead and Company 11 times from 2015 - 2019.
My favorite way to experience the Grateful Dead's music is the tribute band Joe Russo's Almost Dead. I recommend comparing their work to the originals. They're really fun.
two other great Dead songs are "Mountains of the Moon" and "Cosmic Charlie", from the album "Aoxomoxoa"... I agree with the people who say it is best to start with the studio versions and not the live performances

By the time I noticed the dead I knew all their songs.

Box of Rain is a great tune as well.

Now you gotta try the dead's Shakedown Street.
Be-go-nya-z...it’s a flower 🌺 she wears them in her hair

The finest band in the land! They practically never played to an empty seat. I saw them nearly 200 times without even trying too hard🙂
Everything you could enjoy in life-doing it at the shows-dancing with the heads. Best thing ever
You got the hippie wiggle in ya.

Consider yourself lucky my Dude. I found The Dead in the early 90s, never got to see them. There are plenty of us Heads who never got to.

"She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff" is the greatest poker reference in all of music.
