    My friend, Betty Cantor-Jackson, was the recording engineer of this concert. When this was officially released a couple years ago I asked her for her thoughts. She said it brought back nice memories. She said she’d sit opposite side of the stage of Jerry. She’d be wearing headphones and intently listening to the audio mix and not paying attention to the band close by. She said during tours that Jerry would play little notes on his guitar to get her attention knowing she’d be listening and not watching. She would look up to see him smiling at her. It was their private moment during a public show. This recording brought that memory back. Long live the Grateful Dead!

      @@davidtingley9978 Preferably in the 70's and earlier. The whole circus got entirely too big in the 80's and 90's. Garcia was deified to such a ridiculous level he became a prisoner to his hotel room for years on end. It unquestionably led to his early demise. I remember being at a Garcia Band show at the Warfield in the early 90's, and at the break he switched from a black to a purple t shirt. People around me lost their collective minds. "OMG, What does it mean??" One girl was in tears. Uhm, it meant that he was sweaty and wanted a dry shirt, ffs.

      @rlawrencejr1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@grelch One thing I love about JGB is Jerry never missed a beat. It was his and he could be himself for those brief hours. I got into the Dead 87-88 and got to see them at a time when Garcia was healthy. You could absolutely tell in late 93 early 94 it was going downhill fast. The last show few shows I saw in 94 were not great The vibe had changed in the scene totally. My favorite era of the Dead is 73-74. I got this sense that they were tapping into to a different vibe in the jams, the flow of the music and everything else.

      At first when introduced to the Dead, I was deep into metal, prog, avant garde and other stuff, and I'm ashamed to admit I said it was "pling-plong" music. Took a couple years 'til I came around, and since then I've regarded them as one of the greats. Few bands make me want to go back in time so much it physically hurts. Get me off this runaway train! I've always liked liquorice though.

    I’m an old timer now. I came with a classical music background. Saw the Stones, the Who, Beatles, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, Fleetwood Mac(they were great), etc. Saw the Dead in 1971. Lost count after 500 concerts. The joyous, carnival of fans dancing. Positive vibes everywhere. The Dead’s lyrics are unlike any other. Fables, parables, homage, message of happiness, to the most sublime thought. Virtuoso musicians. You need to see the archival live shows. Being there amazing. Best live performing band!!!!

  • @breakfastsurreal5650

    Dead will always be the most important band that has ever been. People en masse put their lives on hold just to tour with them. The wall of sound, acid tests, commrodery of the crowds, deep lyrics, experimental dives into sound exploration each time they played. This band will change your life if you open your mind to what they were trying to do with their music. It's changed countless lives already and shall continue to do so as long as their music remains and I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon except out in all directions unto infinity.

    14:57 "That transition" had been occurring, little by little, since around 11:06; at the point where you said, "SMOOOTH! Oh! C'mon... they're spoiling us," the transition had begun in earnest. It is pretty much complete by 13:53, though they'd been jamming on the riff for about minute already.
    The point at which you paused it to ask about the transition is almost precisely where the jam out of Scarlet Begonias has fully morphed into Fire on the Mountain.
    16:52 "Oooo! You hear that?" That's the hook to "Fire."
    17:45 The lyrics start, and you realise they've been playing this song for 5 minutes; the jam was so smooth and the switch so gradual, you didn't even notice a whole new song had emerged from it.
    I've had a few copies of this show over 23 years since I got my first tape, and I've never gotten tired of it. I get a kick out of watching you get excited about stuff that has excited me for a long time.
    32:18 All that refers to Sugar Magnolia, not Scarlet Begonias.
    RIP, Keith Godchaux

      @MidnightMark12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm going to call the transition seed at 8:32. That's the first ride hit that transitions from Scarlet to Fire, at least for my part. By the time they get to 11:00, the hook is fully set, and the movement really begins.
      Awesome track. Awesome recording. Awesome reaction!

    This show gives me goosebumps and has ever since I got it on tape almost 30 years ago. It makes me happier than it should to see someone appreciate it. They can be an acquired taste - "They are not the best at what they do, they are the only ones that do what they do." It's sheer joy put to music.

    77 and 72 were such amazing years for the Dead! 72 was all about business - rock and roll and blues with a shuffle. 77 just seems to spread out all over the audio spectrum and create great soundscapes.

    Imagine, if you will, being at the show. Surrounded by brothers and sisters that treat you just like family. Cold beverage in hand. The transition just ended and the band flows into fire on the mountain. You're groovin, dancin, and lock eyes with Jerry, he smiles and kicks into a smooth solo. Take a sip of your beverage and look around you to see everyone dancing in sync with you. You've made it! The pinnacle of good vibes! The solo hits a high and you close your eyes and vibe out. YOU'RE HOME! Much love my guy!

    ""Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right|"" ...love seeing you get it. You've come a long way from reacting to Touch of Grey, Jamel. Welcome home!!
    Donna sang back up on Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" ... sang back up for Elvis Presley;'s "Suspicious Mind" and loads of other Muscle Shoals recordings before becoming part of the GD family. Also interesting to note 5/8/77 Cornell aka Barton Hall was considered "the best" GD show, but tuth is all May 77 they were on FIRE it's just that a crispy amazing sounding bootleg got out into tape trading circles so the show became legendary. But really, the 30 shows from the Philly Spectrum 04/22/77 all the way to 3 nights in their ""Home"" June 6,7,& 9, at the Winterland are some of the best shows they ever played.
    Yes the bass is amazing. The transitions are par excellence. Like it's been said many times (Bill Graham said it first) "“They’re not the best at what they do, they’re the only ones that do what they do.”" (oh and the gaps.... its Dancing Jamel. Everyone are dancing!!!
    Jamel i think you're now ready to take my challenge mentioned most recent comment in you Morissette Amon reaction th-cam.com/video/CoVPGSvUFy8/w-d-xo.html You can do it!!!! Maybe next Sunday?? (oh and BTW you will hear an actual Phil Bomb in the transition from Space into The Other One, if you take the challenge!!
