  • I show you why you remove RED Plug for 5 Needle Keurig My K-Cup Universal Reusable Filter MultiStream Technology amzn.to/3DlUWNu I brew a cup of coffee with the Keurig K Supreme plus smart coffee maker with the Red thingy or Plug installed and with it removed. With the red plug or stopper installed the Reusable k Cup leaked water. I remove my red plug and it works great. The instructions do not tell you if you should remove it or leave it installed.

I Called Keurig last Christmas when we got our supreme plus. They said to remove it if using the 5 needle machine. The red thing is used only when you are using an older single needle type machine. I have 4 of these "my k-cup"s. I use 2 every morning. I grind my own beans and put 12.5g of ground coffee in the "my k-cup". Makes a fairly good cup if using the strongest and highest heat setting. Thanks for all your posts! I appreciate your time and efforts you put into each one!! Have a blessed day and please stay safe out there!!

I watched all your videos about this machine, and I truly thank you for breaking down how to use this machine and its components. I will be purchasing the coffee scoop you shown as well to make scooping ground coffee from the bag easier then using a spoon and spilling grounds. THANK YOU SO MUCH! 😊👏🏾☕️

I just got the “updated” instructions - the new cups come with two sets of instructions - for the older ‘plus series’ and then for what appears to be the current line - which actually does include instructions to remove the plus-series adapter. The latest, 5-stream line is called the “Supreme Plus” line. In the instructions, which I agree are TERRIBLE because they don’t make these distinctions - the red rubber is kept in. I’m guessing we’re missing the official printed manual that tells us to remove the red plug - but suffice to say, how hard was it, really, for Keurig to just come up and say to keep the damn thing in if your machine has anything but multiple needles - and remove it for their “multi stream” stuff.

This has been a problem for me for years. Pretty embarassed to be honest 🤦🏽‍♂️ Seems like common sense that it has to be removed because of the 5 needles. It actually worked in the beginning with the red rubber stopper, but then I bought a new one and it leaked water from the sides and it drove me nuts. I'm getting various tools to make the switch from always using pre-filled k-cup pods to grinding and brewing our own fresh coffee. It's been a learning journey, with a Smart Brewer, and non-smart refillable filters. I realized that it was not working optimally, and ordered the My K-Cup filter, plus the EZ-Scoop. This whole red plug, no red plug controversy is really quite interesting. And being the anal-ists that we are, we appreciate this video so much. We also noticed all of the bypass water dripping around the actual coffee stream, so we tried it without the plug as you suggest and that improved. Still got a little drip or two of plain water, but much improved. It's interesting that a Keurig rep told lawnmowerman to remove it for the 5 needle machine since their own instructions AND a Keurig video using the 5 needle job show the plug left in. Obviously, as you pointed out, the needles do displace the plug. Alas, either way does seem to produce a less robust cup of joe than the one use pods. We really wanted it to taste better since it is more economical to grind your own and there's less plastic in the waste stream. But considering the comparatively weak brew it produces, we're left wondering if the extra fuss of this gadget with or without the plug is worthwhile at all. WE LIKE GOOD COFFEE!! Thanks, Dad, for a wonderful review and comparison.

Yeah this has been a big debate, I just wished Keurig would have had better instructions. @@JustADad Thanks for the reply. One question if we may? Does this thing know when it needs descaling, or does that light simply come on after so many cycles even if there is no scale at all or in spite of how often you do this?

    • @JustADad
      @JustADad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@theramseys5296 Great Question. Older Keurig's would know if it needed descaled. the newer Keurig's the light comes on after so many brews typically 250 weather it needs descaled or not. All three K Supremes are this way, the light just comes on after so many brews. Then the only way to get the light to go out is you have to put the machine into descale mode and run it all the way through even the fresh water rinses for the light to go out. If you miss a step then the light does not go out.

This! "Alas, either way does seem to produce a less robust cup of joe than the one use pods. We really wanted it to taste better since it is more economical to grind your own and there's less plastic in the waste stream." I finally broke down and bought a Keurig assuming I could continue to grind & use my favorite Peet's coffee in the reusable k-cup. After finally figuring out with the help of this video what I was doing wrong with the k-cup I can say I was disappointed. I am wondering if the grind size matters. I did not see any mention of this in the instructions. I may try a finer grind to see if this helps to achieve my desired brew.

It seems we have conflicting responses from Keurig. I emailed Keurig customer service end of January and got the following reply:
"Thank you for contacting us. The red plug is applied to the lid for the My K-Cup Universal Reusable Coffee Filter to work across all of our Home Brewer Models. It prevents water or coffee from backup into the brewer for single needle brewers. The red plug should always remain attached to the Lid of the My K-Cup Universal Reusable Coffee Filter. The only time you will need to remove the red plug is for cleaning."
I've used mine both ways with no difference so far. I"m using a K-Supreme Plus. Unlike in your demonstration, I don't get any water leakage going outside of the k-cup. I've been alternating just for testing purposes. I'll post an update if I have any issues one way or another. ~James

Yo Dad... thanks for this vid to clear up to use or not to use the red seal... Makes total sense when you pointed out that with the standard K-cups that the needles were piercing the foil and that the individual K-cups don't have a "red" seal in them.... For a lot of us I guess you pointed out a "Duh Moment".
My wife and I decided to purchase a burr grinder and use the "My K-cup" to try and keep non degradable plastic out of our landfills and help our planet. Using the My K-cup seemed the logical route.
Now to the point of my question regarding the My K-cup... does Keurig sell individual mesh filters so that if you say drink several cups you can pull out the used filter and plop in a clean newly filled filter?

What I notice in watching your videos closely is the front two dog-ears that the K-cup rests on are pushed down below the level of the rest of the opening. Move the my K-Cup with the seal from one machine to the other to see if it is the machine that is causing the spreaded dripping of the water! You need to eliminate if it is the machine down below the my K-Cup causing the different flow! What is the difference between the original multistream my K-Cup and the "NEW" my K-Cup? The "NEW" one with the red plug may be so the universal "NEW" my K-Cup can be used for the old single stream and new multistream where the one that doesn't say "NEW" was only for the multistream!

@@JustADad OK, I fixed it!! Turned out it was the gasket that goes around all 5 of those needles located on the machine lid. Originally, I had thought that gasket needed to be pushed up and seated really well, like most gaskets, but that couldn't be further from the truth. This particular gasket NEEDS to be moved closer to the tips of the needles, moving this gasket further out allows the gasket to actually reach the holes in the reusable k cup lid and press against it forming a seal. This gasket needed to be warmed up first which makes it easier to move, so I ran three 4oz cycles back to back to back to get the gasket nice and warmed up, then I was able to use the round side of my paperclip to kinda pry around every corner moving the gasket down towards each needle tip, and voila!! One single coffee stream like it should, instead of a round waterfall into my cup :) Thanks for your videos they really helped me see the potential problem, otherwise I would still be messing with it

I'll add this but it's no big deal, "sometimes" when I start a fresh brew especially if I really filled the tub with grains I will hold the lid down while a brew gets started to give the machine a jumpstart to help the machine force water through the grains which can "sometimes" cause the lid/gasket to backoff due to the pressure of initially pushing water through, but once the stream starts flowing and the pressure is no longer as great as in the beginning I release me finger after a few seconds. I removed the red thing and still dripping water all around, so frustrating, keuring engineering would need to be fired for this design.

It’s really poor instructions but yes if your using the supreme take the red plug out.

Removed the red stopper and I still get dripping around the bottom lip. Any idea what may be the issue?. Just got the Supreme model from costco a few weeks ago. The throw away pods work great. The reusable pod doesn't have the nice steady stream. Thanks.

Had the same problem. Solved it by sliding the black rubber seal around the 5 nozzle lower towards tip of nozzle. No more leaks around the sides. Try it. Keep red plug out.
