There are so many. But maybe they were appreciated by the right people. Music should never be popular, it should be personal. Life has taught me that popular music is the wrong music. Too many people don't care about the art for popularity to be a measure of success in music.
One of the prettiest sounding performances I've ever heard. Bass harmonics are already very ethereal sounding. But Manring's use of the Hyperbass to emphasize and change the notes is like a pure shot right to the emotions of the listener. This is such a pretty, but tragic sounding track. Manring is a wizard on the bass.
Just look at the marks on his fingerboard. The precision of Mr. Manrings' (sir) fingerings can be measured in nanometers despite changing tunings constantly through his pieces. Jaco would be moved to tears to see his prodigy come so far. Revolutionary bassist, no doubt whatsoever.
I first saw this video when I was 12-13 years old. Then I realized that the world of music has only a few diamonds per billion stones, which you just need to look for. Since then, I began to be interested in that same indie world of music that no one cares about and discovered many genres, and began to write music myself. Returning to listening to a melody that you haven't heard for a decade - you return to the days of naive and carefree childhood. Magic. He is certainly a magician
My wife played a recording of this while I was attempting to sleep on our couch after a long day of work. Needless to say I was not able to sleep, but I was refreshed by the intricacies and mellow tones of this Manring masterpiece.
I've seen this video many times since it's come out. And I'm still blown away at how well he knows his instrument and the type of planning it takes to create any song that deals with harmonics and tuning, then on top of all that it sounds amazing. BLows my mind everytime.
@@bhaskarville It's what's called a hyperbass - tunings can be precisely changed on the fly. It's not merely "hard" to do on anything else, it's impossible.
I can’t believe I’m still inspired by this performance after 12 years of first watching it and a few years since I last saw it. It’s music at its most precious. Thank you Mr. Manring for this gift.
The beautiful sounds of Michael Manring. This is one of the most amazing pieces of Art and Music I have ever heard. This man is a genius and has soul beyond many could ever understand.
I play bass myself, I have played for many years, but it is when you see people like this, that you just realise you are only a beginner. Michael is a masterclass. Total respect to a legend. I salute you. 🙏✊👏👏
every time i see a Michael Manring video, i am blown away by his playing...but i also am blown away by how much he looks like Jon Stewart with a pony tail.
You know you're a true musician when you can write something that isn't fast and flashy and still keep the audience's attention for 5 minutes. The amazing thing about this isn't the technical aspect, but the composition. Very cool.
Manring's a phenomenon. My favorite tune of his is "On a Day of Many Angels." It is one of the most evocative pieces of music I've heard in my 36 years on this planet. And I've heard LOTS of music - jazz, latin, funk, metal, reggae, African, "new age," blues, classical....you name it.
So cool to see Don Ross just sitting there, respecting his fellow musician. He could've been backstage, tuning and prepping or something. But instead he just stayed on stage and watched Micheal play.
bass is easy...sure it is. and when you master just playing it, you can remove all the frets, memorize precise harmonics and play in 3 different tunings at the same time. ya know...to make it a little tougher. ladies and gentleman i used to make basses, and if i might say i'm a hell of a bass player. and i'm watching this like...how...the fuck...does he get any of this right? zero marks, no frets, frigging detuning all 4 strings mid-play. this man is not a bassist, he's a damn wizard and there is clearly some Elvin magic happening.
It's as if this otherworldly melody is coming from another planet, or another dimension. I've never heard anything remotely close to this. I have no words to describe these sublime, ethereal sounds
@thisiswebbmaster There is actually an answer to that :) These are the tunings for the song: Bb F Bb F Ab Eb Bb F Gb Eb Bb Gb Ab F Bb F Gb Eb Bb F Ab Eb Ab Eb Gb Eb Ab Eb
Dude Idk how I hadn't heard this guy until the Davie video. I am a huge jaco pastorius fan and michael is apparently a big deal in terms of bass playing post-jaco. Idk this is like jaco's "Portrait of tracey" but more tonally diverse and possibly more technically dificult
The perception of most casual music enthusiasts/musicians is skewed toward the belief that bass is easy because their context is modern rock/pop music, where the bass serves a very important but basic barebones role. Nobody who wants to pick up bass so they can play Green Day covers in their buddy's garage is going to have heard of or even necessarily want to listen to Michael Manring. Turning the bass into a solo instrument the way he does is like making a full course dinner for 8 people with nothing but a spoon.
You should actually check out more videos from Michael Manring. It's a shame Davie reacted to a video without Slap, but Michael Manring can definitely slap 10x better than Davie504... At LEAST. Manring just does everything though, so this was a bad song to send him seeing as it has no slap. :( Try Helios?
the first time i saw this i thought nothing of it now im in shock listening to it its beautiful you have to be in a certain state of mind to appreciate this
+supravista he he true! and the funny thing is that he's playing really easy melodies that you could easily play without all that struggling ;) and where is the composition in the end?
One word, Epic! Listened to this multiple times, its more art than just knowing how to play a Bass. I not only like the technique, the composition is also great.
I think this might be the most beautiful performance I have ever seen/heard.. Not just bass-wise.. This particular video takes a humongous dump on ANY other video, of ANYONE else, playing ANY other piece, on ANY instrument. God damn..
Candyrat delivers, yet again!! Never seen anyone play the bass that way before, most interesting indeed. This is a clear example of why I enjoy watching and listening to the musicians of Candyrat Records :)
genius of a musician and a true gem of a human being! Looking forward to hosting Michael on my house dinner/concert series in Oakland, once again in May!!
Ladies and gentlemen, now that Mr. Manring has finished tuning his bass guitar, he would like to play something for you.
XDDDDD

Another under-appreciated musical genius of the last 20 years.
I guess he is appreciated just by the right people...
best comment ever.
Such is the lot of true genius.
There are so many. But maybe they were appreciated by the right people. Music should never be popular, it should be personal. Life has taught me that popular music is the wrong music. Too many people don't care about the art for popularity to be a measure of success in music.
Was just nominated as top 3 bassists of 2020 🍻

How dare you sully him with such a plebeian word as "pretty". WE MUST INVENT A NEW WORD. THIS NEEDS A NEW WORD!!!

Never gets old. I listen to this about 10 times a year. In the top 10 most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The Enormous Room is in my own top 10. Manring is a genius
I feel like that melody has been ringing in my head all my life
Its really nostalgic! Reminds me a LOT of the old Sega Megadrive game music!
Same for me, magic

That silence at the end before the crowd began to cheer is the sound of respect.
a chilling “sound”
To whoever was responsible of recording this, Thanks for the quality sound recording :)
I have the CD, it sounds way better on my sound system at home.

I can barely contain myself for how amazingly beautiful this is. It both feels good and hurts. It's...just amazing.

What a hypnotizing track... Hauntingly beautiful.
he uses the "techy" techniques to create something beautifull, not to show off.the result is an incredible and touching piece of music

The beautiful sounds of Michael Manring.
This is one of the most amazing pieces of Art and Music I have ever heard.

its incredible how he knows exactly where to put his fingers back to when he changes the tuning, seeing as its fretless and all. outstanding musician
I've had a hell of a week, so bad that I should have broken down and cried by now but just havent. This did the trick. Beautiful.
Can’t believe this was uploaded 13 years ago. Saw it then. Still blows my mind
Michael is an Alien who brought in the Earth the real meaning of pure art.
i last listened to this 4 years ago. I thought it was a beautiful performance then, and still do now.
that melody comes from heaven i can't explain it otherwise
I've lost count of the amount of times I've come back to this video. Surely the most inventive bassist on the planet.
Man, I miss Michael Hedges when I listen to this.

You can hear they met 😀
I'm sure Mr. Manring does, too. Their performances together are the stuff musicians dream of.
I met Michael. Nice guy, very humble. Best bass player in the world.
Now that i've heard this I can finally die in peace.
Nice melee avatar, Falco is sick
