This feels like the moments before a great nap. And then you are out, into your world...
So happy that a decent recording of this exists
This take is stunning... Man, that boy can play and make a Pizza at the same time!
Certainly one of the most brilliant compositions ever written for bass! Absolutely genius.
His ability to change tunings is incredible as well. He isnt just using his hipshots, he is changing tunings manually too.
One year I was at the Namm show and was at the Zon booth. On the wall was a HyperBass. In my excitement I picked it up and started to play it and analyze all its components. Someone in front of me was looking at me as if had done something wrong. I looked and to my shocking surprise right behind me was Michael Manring. He was about to do a solo set. I apologized not realizing it was his actual bass. Michael was so incredibly kind. He said "no its ok go on and play it" What a true gentleman!! I will never forget that moment and the performance that followed. 😇
So amazing. What true kindness of heart.
That's cool!
this is such a wonderful story! ❤
@@bdubs3819 He is truly an angel.
This put me into what can be best described as a combination of meditative and flow states. A virtuoso performance that lifted me to the clouds
This goes straight to the soul and leaves a permanent mark there. Wow. Just wow.
Amazing breadth of sounds and harmonics, all from one bass guitar and a single performer ! Terrific !
2:06 That chord is one of the most pleasant things i’ve hear in my entire life
Thick and perfect!
I think this is the most astounding piece of solo bass guitar ever recorded....mind blowing!
This is one of the finest examples of astonishing technique that’s used purely to serve the composition…who’s beauty is nothing short of breathtaking. What an absolute masterpiece.
This may be the saddest song I have ever heard. It's so heavy that it's almost hard to listen to. Definitely hard to take in. Michael Manring is amazing.
Listen to "I Left America" by Michael Manring
Even though there are no words, you can feel the story and relate to it.
His "Feel" is just incredible!
Made me thing of opening up a book and looking at the fresh new young world evolving Before humanity started to murder it.
Amazing how music can inspire you. :')
Magic. Pure magic.
I have always loved this tune, but this is the true definition of performance art. It is mesmerizing to watch his command of this unique instrument.
I had the opportunity to sit in on a master class he was doing at the University of Alabama. I have never seen someone play an instrument with so much conviction. In my mind he will always serve as the reminder that I became a musician for the beauty of the music.
It's easy to get distracted by the performance of the performance so, if that is the case for you, just close your eyes and enjoy the music. It's wonderful.
I'm still recovering from a melted face, after I heard the album Thonk for the first time back in 1994. Unreal talent, legendary master.
I am constantly amazed at Michael Manrings creativity. It just boggles my little pea-brain.
Vim por causa do Felipe Andreoli. De monstro para monstro. Que música linda...
Não aguentei, na metade do video tive que vir ouvir a musica inteira.
@@WilkerOliveira23 😆
Been a fan his windham hill days!
holy .... say the old video in someone's living room. this is spectacular. hypnotic, beautiful, precise.. tasty tasty stuff.
who gave thumbs down to this masterful performance? there should be an idiot filter on TH-cam
MM's music is spiritual and ethereal and mystic to me
I think sometimes people just miss cause they're so captivated
Such a Precision !
6 dislikes... 6 thumbs down.... What is going on in this world? One simply does not thumbs down ANYTHING Michael Manring does, YOU SIMPLY DO NOT.
Wonderful ambient created, between other nice things.
Beautiful, thank you for sharing.
6:43 that was gorgeous my boy
That was the moment...
Felipe seu malandrão! Obrigado pela dica!
I cant wait to see this guy live in a couple weeks. totally awesome.
truly wonderful.
Absolutely Exquisite!!! And only 4 string w/o all the ridiculous slapping and popping!
So NICE ... BEAUTIFUL !!!! 💚💚💚💚
love this composition. true mastery.
i've always wondered how closely this could be approximated without a hyperbass.
Quantum musicianship
Michael Manring is something else !!!!!
Thanks thanks and thanks again...
How great to hear the more recent version! A bit like grapes to wine, really. The best way I can describe this tune in words is "Math... with a Soul" :)
mesmerising :)
fretbuzz59... just a troller.
this is just plain brilliant and brings forth joy. You don't get it. Most of us do. At least we know who gave the thumbs down.
1:36 that LOW Eb fucking master
That's my favorite chord of the song too!!
De todo repertório, essa é a minha preferida! Belíssima...
Search for "Michael Manring Hyperbass". Those ARE hipshots on each string, but he also has THREE custom detuners in the bridge.
...speechless...
@nukebass
yes, i can confirm it is! ..emotions, chills, bright eyes, tears!
Excelente !!! 👏👏
Amazing. Wish I had a better bass so I can experience this magic. I remember seeing the living room concert back in the day, it blew my mind, and now I remembered why
....Wild stuff! Nice video.
Mindbendingly incredible..
Watching Manring live must be the closest thing to heaven.
Saw this on the Hedges documentary, love the feel of this song!
QUE BRUXARIA É ESSA MEU DEUS 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🥰
Holy mother of god ... I wish could do dat. :o( The Adrian Legg of bass guitar.
great!!!!!!!
Think of keeping your fingerings straight while your instrument is retuning all 5 strings several times a minute! That's just nuts! Beautiful. The great thing is that it's all to serve the music, which is lovely. Not just show - this is real musicianship stretching an artform to make it fit what the mind hears. Thanks Michael.
Actually, it's four strings, but I get your point. In fact, it's no less amazing that he gets as much range as he does out of only four strings. A masterful performance!
so amazing
Sweet.
Звук этого инструмента,и умение музыканта,поменяло меня даже на физиологическом уровне,я как будто бы был под морфием и марихуаной вместе!
Oof, I was living in Allentown when this happened, I coulda been there if I'd known.
Spit my coffee out laughing at that one
@Rael0505 You should listen to Selene, also by Manring... it makes this look positively cheerful!
didn't Really want to: but to have the 'top' comment from 'azahnd82', figured I'd....
MM is a great artists. We played R&R for one year together with 'Jimbo' and (Peter the keyboardist?) during our last year of Langley H.S. - Of course Jaco and all the great jazz artist/influences (Metheny, Blue note artist, etc) were All in our ears, hearts and hopefully souls to develop. MM was great then at 17 and now .. ? Comment!
What is this sorcery?
New age jazz.
I would like the tab for this song please
000000000 cuz no frets
that wass awsomee ^_^
but which bass he was playing :'( i love that 2 :D ?????????????
Ankur Kashap In an another video, he called it a special made Zon Michael Manring Hyperbass
I went to a seminar at a local music store in the early 1990's where he and Joey Zon unveiled the Hyperbass shortly after they'd designed it and Zon built it. The highlight was when he played his song "Watson and Crick" on two basses at the same time. Epic.
Oh... so subtle at 2:48!
them tuning heads are crazy
i'd like to believe that someone clicked on that dislike button by mistake.
I'm willing to bet fretbuzz59 that none of the names he used to make his point would agree with his opinion of Manring.
Gawd man, you have no idea what you're talking about nor who you are talking about. This piece is almost 20 years old and it sounds like it came out yesterday. Sure, it doesn't have a "defined" melody that's easy to consume by the ignorant masses, but, it does have a solid melodic foundation that showcases how the Bass can be a solo instrument. Plus,it is still is in the Fusion vein considering this was off of his album "Thonk" ( I shouldn't have to explain the importance, should I?), so,
How are those keys he uses to change tuning so fast called?
Please explain how co-re-inventing an instrument (w/ Jon Zon) & mastering that style with songs that incorporate multiple tunings while playing is "gimmicky". I guess you felt the same way when Michael Hedges played the harp guitar? The sad thing is that genuine genius mixed with brilliance leaves you cold...
@MoonUnitLatina
Hey - I'm a musician, not a mathematician! ;-) Besides, he makes it sound more like 12 strings, so I get partial credit, right?
@Cre8tvMG I only see 4 strings...
Didn't know this player before, but this is so badass that i can't even find words to describe. Rescepta mah nigga!;)
Manring created all new possibilities for bass players without introducing more effects pedals or computers. I'm curious what you'd call the innovation that Akira Jimbo created for Jazz Drummers?! Sounds to me like you're stuck in the seventies... You should stay there
@Cre8tvMG lol fair enough :-D
They're probably all Hipshot detuner keys.
*sighs* nice song... DO NOT TROLL.
Frustrating not to have a fretless after watching him play lol, I want a good fretless
it's not meant to appeal to those who want standard fare. Imho, the sonic aspects are meant to trigger anticipation - moments away from the structure of the song. There is a lot to be said for the silence this man is able to play with. You're talking smack about a musician whose played with everyone from Hedges & Ackerman to Jarzombek, Loomis & Skolnick.... Grow some ears for Jazz and Rent A Clue!
Wow... Unfamiliar with MM's fusion?! He was Jaco's student, played with Weather Report, spent a ton of time on Windham Hill's label with Winston & the likes. Your name-dropping doesn't mean shit to me when you talk out yer ass by saying Thonk sounds like an imitation of Bruford. Especially in '79?! LMAO! The sad thing is, if you really have all that experience, referring to the pioneering of an age old instrument as mere parlor tricks.
So u know EVERY player out there on every instrument, right? I don't see WR anywhere in MM's bio. But Winston? Nauseous hack! Nonetheless, not my fault that my "name-dropping" left u w/egg on your face. You made the accusation that I had no ears for jazz; I was just setting u straight. Hey, whatever's in MM resume doesn't change this stuff. Bob James played w/Gerry Mulligan. That doesn't mean his later stuff wasn't boring MOR. I was wrong about Thonk, it's like Bruford w/a touch of Crimson. lol
Seems like he should be able to afford a real guitar with 6 strings, frets, and doesnt come out of tune all the time.
what the hell are you talking about? He has like 20 Basses all costing the price of a brand new car.. This is an experimental Bass him and Zon made, and he did an album using it. You cannot extend Harmonics and chords on a 6 string. Which is why he has hipshots and a detunable bridge. Putting all this on a 6 string would be way too much. But you cannot accomplish this sound without the hipshots and detuners. Michael plays all styles of Bass using all types of different basses. This bass is purely experimental, and it makes some amazing, unique sounds. That's likely why it costs like $15,000.
@@JonHop1 ever made a joke? Thats what that was, right there. Woosh, right over your head... maybe you were having a bad day. Hope todays a better one if you see this!
I am 3 years late, but your reply was a whole year after the original post so fair game, heh. Be nice, take care, and be well
@@Jacob.Improvises bud, it's a bad joke.. That bass costs $20,000
@@JonHop1 oh I know, been admiring it for like 15 years, haha.
I got proof of that on my channel, my cover of Andy McKee's drifting that I posted 15 years ago... Just a little while after I discovered and had my mind blown by Candyrat and all the crazy amazingmusicians that lived on that channel... Including Michael Manring and his Zon Hyperbass wizardry. I'll come back to watch this gentleman cast bass spells as long as there is an Internet to find it on.
Your question pretty much answers itself. Seldom, if ever, have I seen an instrument played unconventionally, w/pieces specifically for that instrument, w/real substance. This stuff may have a certain appeal as ethereal soundscapes. But that's it. There's very little defined melody, harmony, or rhythm. (And no, he hasn't mastered it by a long shot. Lots of flubs.) When Hedges played Bach, ok. But his stuff? Sonic wallpaper. Zzzz. Sad thing that you see genius & brilliance in hollow contrivances.
Yeah, it's impressive in a way. But it's gimmicky, and ultimately leaves me cold.
