I was a huge prog rock fan in the mid to late 70s - ELP #1 - I used to talk to a good buddy of mine about how great a drummer Carl Palmer was (is). I'd point out his snare drum technique, his inventive use of the hi hat, the expansive kit with the concert toms & orchestral percussion
. . . and then he sat me down to listen to Hemispheres
nothing else to be said . . .

Hands down, my absolute favorite rock band/artist interviewer ever. He's refreshingly articulate, pleasant, near perfect radio voice, excellent, well researched original questions, and the most important trait, he SHUTS THE FUCK UP when the quest/artist is speaking!!! I appreciate the professionalism bro, wherever you are . . .

unfortunately he is also a female abuser and lost his job because of court cases and accusations of mistreating women. I too admired him because of his studio professionalism and huge knowledge of the Canadian music scene, both English and french.

An honest musician wants to push themselves and experiment and see what they can do. Take it to new places and emphatic. Geddy Lee, Lifeson, Peart....they're a miracle combo. They are on the same wavelength. They don't worry about impressing,...yet, of course it's great to make a connection with the audience and it becomes an substantial experience. They're intelligent guys. There is Mozart...and there is Andrew Lloyd Webber...there is RUSH. They are a more advanced level. And it's executed with mastery. I'm a woman...and I totally love these people and their music. Sexy...smart...passionate... Who doesn't get off to Alex in the 80's...and even now..watching him play...and Geddy with his weird sexy cuteness. These guys are just genuine and love what they're doing. They are the real deal. True musicians. Nothing about the ego trip. It's all the passion of it.

one more thing, they fail to state the fact that alot of their influence on other bands is so much more than just their work ethic within the context of a band. the real influence comes from the fact that each of rushs members are tops at their idividual instruments, not to mention the multitasking that each member is involved in during live shows. this is where the huge influences come from.......

Been hooked on RUSH since the first album. I've never bought into mainstream Top 10 radio. I loath it. Top 10 is for the sheep. Sheep can't stand RUSH because they do their own thing and don't care if the sheep approve or not. I like that. The members of RUSH are individuals. Their music speaks to those that cry out for fearlessly original ever evolving quality noncookie cutter music. Conformity be damned. Their motto must be NEVER SAY BAAAAAAAAAA. I must go get this film.

They were never “huge” in the past because there was no sensationalism. Nobody had a horrific drug abuse problem. No infighting. No scandalous comments. Just great music. Sensationalism sells. Music is just music.
When Rush was heavier, they sounded like Rush being heavy. When they went to keyboards, they sounded like Rush using keyboards. They were completely unique. Nobody sounded like them and they didn’t sound like anybody else.
We will never see their like again.

You have all this bands like Rush, King Crimson, Hawkwind, Van Der Graaf, Gong, Magma, Zappa, Henry Cow and Soft Machine. You can trace the sound of every avant garde rock band to those Prog Legends. While Pop outfits like Blink 183 and Green Day are the heirs of The Ramones.

It does matter..When Juno acknowledged them long ago and as you see them being recognized and reminded of from movies and tv..It does matter...It does matter that a magazine that posted for years how Peart and Lee are the best at their instrument as chosen by subscriptioners and now they have chosen to block them out...I am overly pissed that Rollingstone controls the Hall of Fame

Hair styles? Clothing? The two guys who made this documentary are an example of why Rush has been eschewed by the mainstream critics and culture. They don't fit into the stereotypical and highly marketable romanticized drama-filled lives of most rock artists. Additionally, the music and lyrics are more cerebral and complex than pop taste can handle. It is a sad day when insightful lyrics are deemed pretentious simply because the average person can't appreciate it. A band doesn't owe anyone anything. It's about the music. Period.

  • @haeuptlingaberja4927
    @haeuptlingaberja4927 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Funny that metalheads and proggers are coming to Rush's defense, since that band is neither. And don't get me wrong--I am a mega-Rush fan, from the first time I saw them, at 15, on their first headline tour, in 1976, and also a massive prog fan (go Gentle Giant!) who loved the original hard rock bands like Deep Purple, Sabbath, Atomic Rooster and Captain Beyond who paved the way for the metal boys and who still incorporated a good deal of soul into their songs--but let's face it: like Zappa said, music after 1973 was completely subsumed under the bidness of rock 'n roll.

Geddy's voice..you either love it or hate it..In the early years his voice begged Kiss to get them as an opening band. You can't tell me as a Rush fan that Geddy's voice on 2112 and before had you not going.Holey crap.Geddy had a great voice...It died after Permanent Waves...But when his voice went "mellow"He grabbed a greater fan base. Its not Geddy's voice..It will never be Geddy's voice.I f-ing love"In The End" but I also love "Available Light".I Just Love RUSH..I will always love RUSH

Performing material that is so deep, complex, and satisfying to yourself as a musician is the OPPOSITE of "pretentious". To me, being pretentious is changing what YOU want to do because you feel it will make you more widely accepted. Take most of the "hair metal" bands of the 80s. To be clear, I enjoyed MANY of these- But look at what they did. A lot of those guys were outstanding musicians disguised as idiots for the sake of commercial success. Bands like Winger for example were so very talented as musicians. Rod Morgenstein was one of my heroes as a drummer. Kip Winger is an outstanding bassist. But what they do? Put on a ton of make up, big hair, and prance around the stage singing about banging 17 year olds, or "power ballads". THAT was what was making money back then, so thats what they did. They had the musicianship to do much more, but chose to "Pretend" to be something else. I do NOT fault them for this, but again, that is something that more defines pretentiousness. Rush always had a desire to continue learning, and develop and evolve. They went where they wanted to go, even if it was panned by critics. That is what makes them unique.

  • @jimmygt4

i really never thought of rush as being nerdy or weird. the first time i heard of them, was from friends and also early mtv, when they would play tom sawyer from the exit stage left video. i remember just thinking, wow, these guys are serious, and oh, thats neil peart- who i heard was the best drummer. plus the urban myth of what the letters r u s h stood for(ruling under satans house). not true, but still nothing nerdy about that.....

I can't jump on this bandwagon..One critic said he got Genesis in...Is he part of Rollingstone?....So many questions...David Wild will keep them out"til the day he dies"..quote unquote...The White Stripes walk in tomorrow according to Rollingstone and they trash Rush every chance they get...They demeaned the lead singer of Coheed and Cambria for sounding like Geddy..I don't buy it just yet
