I was in a Rush cover band during college. When I met Alex during a meet and greet I told him my hands almost fell off learning his lines. He smiled and said “oh my you are so kind. I am so glad you liked my playing so much” he was incredibly gracious. And gave me a few picks. Geddy was also a total sweetheart.

Saw an interview recently with Todd Rundgren who was a friend of Neil’s. Todd said “no man has ever had more dominance over his chosen instrument”. Perfect description. RIP Neil you are missed and loved by schmillions

When I discovered them in High school in 1978, they opened my eyes and ears to a whole different way of thinking. My whole approach to music in general changed overnight. A lot of people didn't get it but, in a way, made me feel like I was an insider and was smarter than the rest. I never missed them on tour and thankfully I was able to take in 2 shows on their farewell tour. Rest in peace Neil.

Still totally confused that anyone has negative reviews/impressions of caress of steel. What have you done? Caress of steel is an absolute masterpiece

I saw them lead off for Zappa in the mid 70s. Never heard of them before that. What a great journey it's been

To me, Rush became RUSH when Neil joined between the debut and Fly By Night. Without Geddys voice, you wouldn’t have known they were the same band. Gone was IN THE MOOD and in forever came Bytor and an ANTHEM. They went from a viable hard rock band that was definitely influenced by Zep to a real progressive, thoughtful, futuristic, even mystical musical unit that you could just tell was never going to stop progressing and changing. By 2112 I could hear jazz, sci-fi, Yes, and unapologetically still Zep with the energy of youth. Being an overly thoughtful teen in the 70’s, they resonated with me as brothers who I felt a spiritual connection to. Vital for a youth who could have lost his way but found something to explore and discover at the same time with the vitality and energy that caught both my ear and my heart. Forever grateful for these three guys who were blazing their own trail with creativity, virtuosity, and an energy that was their own but it invited me into their space and offered me more than a drink, an invite to a party that always felt great and left me smiling. 👍🖖🤘✌️❤️💯🙏

They left out the star rating for 2112, so I'm giving it 5 stars.

Fabulous and timely. I have the Inside Yes 1968-1973 DVD from this company. The Genesis one is good too, on you tube. So happy to find this today. Yay!

"He (Neil) has a degree in percussion" Neil was a High School drop out. He didn't have a degree in anything. People seem to equate his nickname of "The Professor" as having some sort of degree. The nickname "The Professor" didn't come from any schooling, it came from the character "The Professor" on Gilligan's Island because Geddy and Alex thought Neil's demeanor was very much like that character's.

Seems like people weren't ready for Caress of Steel back then.
It aged like wine and became a classic later..I and many others love that album today.

They invented compositional hard rock and roll and took it to its highest levels. Three of the hardest ‘working men’ ever to write and play music.

John Rutsey was asked to leave by management because he had diabetes and was drinking( sugar) and they were concerned for his health with traveling. John also wanted to do more hard rock stuff but management talked w him a out him not being able to tour. John understood they said. They had 4 weeks to find a new drummer. Peart was asked to audition by the manager. Someone told them about the drummers that might work so they held auditions.

Rush was The Band for me and 1st concert I ever went to n got hooked ever since
2112 is still a brilliant album. I think the Side B contains the most underrated songs. (Of course with crummy CDs we have no side B lol) but from Passage to Bangkok on... Rediscover them n see!

The Caress Of Steel Tour was dubbed the Down The Tubes Tour. The lable gave them one chance to write an epoch (radio friendly album) or they would be dropped. 2112 was giving the middle finger to the record lable. then they wrote side B to show that they could write radio songs. After that the record company gave free reign

Great documentary! Thank you for posting! Pt. 2 was phenomenal, too.
Is there a doc for the 80’s-2012...? With Neil’s passing I’ve been re listening to some of their post-“Signals” albums and I really slept on a lot of good stuff. RIP Neil Peart.

Awesome band. thumbs down to whoever filmed that first couple of songs. It's a THREE piece band and, as always, the drummer is never featured.... Of course, Neil was very featured later.
