Capturing a house finch in oils. I used MH oil paints for this piece with a little bit of walnut oil medium and only a very tiny amount of liquin to aid in the drying of the painting. I painted this on an 8x10 hardbord panel with gesso.
Colors used: T. White, Cad Yellow, Cad Yellow Deep, Cad Orange, Cad Red, Magenta, Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue

Enjoyed this, very different from the Alla Prima styles that emphasize broad strokes with lots of blending and painting over previous stokes until the artist is happy with the result. Beautiful.

Great job, great video. Hard to paint the feathers with wet on wet technique but not impossible. I use similar type of brush and it is really good for the fine details. Especially for the feathers and furs.

That finch looks bloody fantastic. I've been learning to draw and 'ink' digitally recently (I ink traditionally using steel crow quill nibs and dip pen ) and when I douse color it's: watercolor, gauche, or acrylic, for their relative ease of use (water based medium and quick drying time) when surrounded by inked illustrations, preliminary sketches and ink bottles. However, I've always wanted to try oils, the classical medium, but it's the cleanup and more importantly, toxic fumes that has kept me away.

Excellent, at what stage of painting did you use walnut oil, and in your experience what are its benefits?

Thats a gorgeous painting buddy. Thanks for making these, they help me during breaks while paint dries. I'm also trying out some of your techniques. I will probably join your membership soon. Do you have a Patreon page? I'm wondering which is better for me to join, I just cannot deny I've grown as an artist because of your lessons and would love to get to some more videos, although thankfully I haven't seen all the free ones yet. God bless. Dave from Canada

Do you sell paint brushes? I really like the angled brush you used, & would like to get one. I'm in Canada.

Is it possible to paint in oils only half hour a day....as I have only 30 minutes a day for painting. But I feel that's very very short time...just for setting up and cleaning and thinking will take that much time for me. Please comment

Chuck I am curious as to when you’re painting a large canvas painting, why do you paint with such small paint brushes?Does it give you a better sense of control?

Some people are actually talented and can sketch without outlines, then there are those that have absolutely no talent, so they can only be an ass to make themselves feel important.
