Every work of Art created by humans has a story behind it that elevates it above any created by Ai .Its important more than ever, to share these backstories, and journalling the artistic process is a great idea to do that.

I’m with you on AI. I can’t pay no mind to AI. My creativity of my art on the canvas is my mind. When I started painting, a couple years ago, I knew I had the gift for it. I was shocked to think my whole life, I did not discover this. I’m 64 now. When I started I kept a journal of my painting. The colors I used and why. A lot of that was so I could remember just starting out, but this has helped me during this journey of art for me. I’m going to enjoy your series here. You are one of the people that has inspired me and it is nice to see you back on.
I started at age 62. My wife took painting classes and did not like it. I decided to try without classes, and found I could. Self teaching, and watching tutorials from Chuck and other artists out there. By far, Chuck is the mist authentic for me. I paint acrylic right now, and would like to try oils one day.

It's me who started art in 28 properly by self teaching , but I am involve in many terms at same time, like pencil , charcoal, pen, water-color , poster color , acrylic color and calligraphy etc &( Portraits, bodies figs, animals figs, machinery figs, military art, scenery, different kinds of doodles , caricatures etc )😂. So in simply I don't know how to handle my passion .

There are plenty of "artists" that say this "AI" thing is merely a tool, same as a camera obscura or tracing paper. A computer program that creates images based on input of phrases or words cannot and never will be art. There is no creative process in using such a program. Sadly there are tons of images being sold on many sites that are done with "AI" and the people that use these images to sell are doing actual artists a great disservice. Pretty soon no one will be bothering with real art, let alone paying for real art when they can readily obtain these computer images for pennies.
Hi Chuck, I've been following you for years, since back in the days of the acrylic farm paintings and the hikes with chocolate bars in your napsack. (Wish that video was still up 😄) The new format is very interesting, informative and enjoyable. Can't wait for the next video.
I’ve stopped posting my art online completely. I create art for myself and will continue until I no longer have use of my hands. Thankfully it’s not my profession. I do feel bad for artists losing work because of ai.
I don’t like that we have to even address AI. Been in the industry for over 20 years and even though AI has its place, art is not it. Automation is where it has a place. If you use it for anything else you are using it for the wrong reason.
I am worried about AI art in certain industries people are already losing their art jobs because AI art is cheaper. It provides an inferior product but some companies don't really care. For independent artists that have grown their own audience I'm less worried.
good to see the Liquin addition....but as these are quicker paintings no chance for glazing opportunities yet... ;) ...sometimes removing black from your palette and substituting indigo works quite well...using black now only as a tint and rarely... ;)
Frankly, you should be very worried about AI + Art. Unless you only care about yourself of course. Obviously YOU have nothing to fear, because your art is personal, your identity is attached to it, and because of that, you can sell your work for a good amount of money. However, that type of art and its affluent customers represent only a fraction of the entire art-industry. Rest assured, not a single one of the half a million subscribers to this channel, has ever bought a painting for tens of thousands of dollars. Everybody else in the art-industry that isn't Chuck Black is creating prints for bed-sheets, wallpaper, T-shirts, hats, cookie-packagings, calendars, sodacans, curtains, phonecovers, etc, etc, etc, etc. And THOSE people, the overwhelming majority of the art-industry, can all pack it in. They already have, because AI is now creating most of what they used to do. So, it kind of depends what you mean with your videotitle Chuck. You personally do not have to worry about a thing. My guess is that if you would hang up your easel today, you'd still be comfortable for the rest of your life. That however, doesn't go for literally everybody else in the art-industry and if you're not worried about hundreds of thousands worldwide losing their jobs and needing some kind of support to stay alive, then I guess the future of art isn't worrisome at all..
That's some wild assumptions, my friend. Actually, contrary to your comment, I still rent, have little retirement savings, don't license my art to all those things, and grind day in day out to pay the bills and survive. So no, I actually do care about a lot more than myself, worry about a lot too, and I still stand by what I say. Have a great week.
Misread what you said about licensing, look, I work with Buffalo games to license my art for puzzles and it's a big help for us. I was afraid of that, but they don't seem interested in using AI images for their products and continue wanting real work by real humans for their products. So, no I don't think think artists who license will have to pack it in. We all have to adjust, and I just believe that we will find a path.
Great video Chuck, it helps bring people back to what art really is when you get to the bottom of it and thats, _the human experience._ As far as AI art goes; "AI art" is exactly what it says is, "Artificial" and thats what it always truly will be. Even if tries to fool us with the word "art" its name. Still ARTificial.
By the way if you see this comment Chuck. How about that Lead Ground! Its quite something, i only do lead ground when possible. You said it was an ACM aluminum panel? Sounds like an Artifix brand panel. Cant wait till you move on to some Lead white! Its not as bad as people make it out to be, just dont use it as mayo on ur sandwiches and youll be fine. The subtleties make it a such a more beautiful white to use. Keep it up Chuck!
Glad you liked it! Yes, certainly been missing out on the lead ground. Ya it is artefex, but I'm priming them myself as I don't like the texture from the way they apply the ground. I have had lead white on hand for years and it wasn't enough to convince me, so, I wont be using it anymore. My favorite artist Terry Redlin didn't know who he was by the end of his life and retired from painting very early on. His family said it was from repeated exposure to lead as his favorite color was lead white. Sorry, I can't bring myself to do it! Appreciate it very much thanks again

Oh I definitely care, I'm just more optimistic that we will find a way like we always have and at the end of the day, we as humans are communicators and have always been that. I suspect it will lead to a new normal, rather than the destruction of artists.
Well the AI topic sure sparks a conversation doesn’t it?! Computers were feared in the early stages. Yet we somehow figured out how to work with it and around it. I would have a heck of a hard time if I couldn’t use today’s technology in terms of reference photos or simply going onto TH-cam to learn from other artists. There’s always negative side effects to things, but I have faith in humanity. If I were to quit painting because people just use AI for a pet portrait, then that simply is not my audience or client pool. Like minded people will find each other.
Dear Chuck, you are accurate. To the five senses art can be very pleasing, when produced by man's machine. However, art produced by an artist, as we are being human, has an accompanying spirit. It can be positive or negative in its energy. Many are able to discern its spiritual energy. There are those artist, who possess a deep, passionate love of what they wish to convey and the manner in which they will convey it. Beautiful work, Chuck. I am definitely a fan. I wish I lived there. It is where I was born to be, I think. But, I am here and I do painting for my church magazine of places and people that I have never seen anywhere but in my heart. Paintings are emotions come to life.
The debate about AI is ongoing. I’ve been on the same page as you, stating that AI will not replace the human element in art. I feel AI can be a help as well, but then I say this, finding that when I used AI to show me ideas of something I couldn’t capture with a camera in the moment, AI failed me. So no matter how good AI gets, we as artists still have to rely on our own minds to create the story we want to tell. Technology is great, but I think the human experience is greater. Your first painting of this video was well executed. The campfire at the end really made the painting. Something so simple can make a bold statement. I’m in awe of your clouds. I need more work in that area. I try to do paintings where I incorporate an awesome sky, just so I can try to duplicate it. Apparently you have better skies where you live. 😊 Thanks for coming back and talking with your viewers. I really did enjoy your live streams, as well as your Voice overs as you painted. I would have you playing in the background as I painted. It gave me inspiration and motivation to get through a painting. Here’s to more wonderful paintings in the future!❤❤
The sad thing is that while AI may generate technically perfect images, it will still be worthless. Because us humans purposely bend those rules and may even intentionally make ‘mistakes’ to make our art personal and unique. Also…humans will want art made by humans. If anything (in my opinion) AI will drive up the price of Human Art because it will be more rare. Many aspiring artist will ‘give up’ trying to ‘be better’ than AI.

Much like those DJ's who do mashups, A.I programs NEED real artists work to syphon information from for its algorithms to generate images. When real artists work has gone- no new movements or styles are being created - A.i can no longer generate new work and eventually all AI will populate the same repetitive images. Thankfully we are already seeing the backlash today, both artist and buyers are seeking out true human made artwork. I think the bigger issue is many younger artists have been deceived into this 'put out mass content' and are using AI art to generate ideas for there artwork which I think makes them mentally lazy and robs them of their own development of their internal spirit & imagination.
That's why more than ever, I believe we need to be encouraging and inspiring our younger generations to get outside more in nature and learn about our natural world.
As AI grows and hundreds of thousands of acres are stripped to add solar panels and windmills, or coal mines and oil wells to feed electricity to the servers, you might become concerned. It will then be too late. I really appreciate your work. I'm afraid another aspect of AI will be the dilution of an artist's opportunity to tell their stories. We could not have these fireside chats on Tictoc. If TH-cam pulls an Instagram we might never see your videos again. If I close my eyes I can smell the sage, love that country.
Oh I definitely share concerns about it, just not specifically when it comes to our desire for handmade art, writings, music.. Thank you for the kind words and hopefully not, either way, I'll continue to create
AI's a tool, nothing more, and can be used to give an artist inspiration. I've used it as the starting point for something, but it tend to be rather flat and uninspired (if I were to paint that item as it was generated, it doesn't look like much). By the time I'm done, there's much more depth and reality to it, and you can still see the base in there...but it's now been given a human-level of interpretation. Similarly, AI scenes aren't real. That bothers me less as I do some fantasy and imagination inspired art anyway, but the AI won't tend to deviate from the classical interpretations of said images, whereas I definitely do. I like to paint things transitionally, or objects and creatures interposed, and it's just not something AI is very good at--yet, anyway.
Wow just 5 minutes into this video and I had to comment ..I too am an artist and the only reason i paint is because i love nature so much and want to capture it on canvas and share that joy so nice to hear another artist express it so eloquently thankyou . Your paintings are amazing you have such a gift . I look forward to watching more videos like this .
Chuck, this video is fantastic! It's been a while since I've been able to keep up with your progress, and I have a lot of catching up to do. You look and sound so much more relaxed from the last time I was able to keep up with you. I moved here with mom over 9 1/2 years ago, to take care of her, after my dad died. I lost her three and a half months ago. I'd not even tried to keep up my painting, in the last few years - priorities. This video has rekindled a measure of longing to get back into painting. I'm still in a bit of a rough stage, and that might take a while to get past, but maybe painting again would be a kind of "freeing" thing for me. It's really great to see you and see the absolutely splendid things you are doing! All the best!

This was a similar fear Artists had when the camera was invented, but what was created was a whole new genre of art. Impressionism gave Artist freedom of self expression, and I think what will happen with AI is we will be given the freedom to become even more self expressive and to add more of our own stories.
I can't speak for that industry much, but I personally believe this technology will lead us to a new normal requiring new skillsets, rather than the destruction of digital artists or any artists.
The only artists who are not concerned about AI are art bloggers. And hobby artists, of course. Still, if there will be less young artists because AI steal jobs, bloggers would have less subscribers. AI improves too fast to not to be concerned about it. Still, relaxing video, thanks.
I make very little money from youtube or 'blogging'.. In fact, it's not even close to enough to pay my monthly expenses. I certainly am concerned on the grander scale impact AI will have, but with artwork, I believe that we as humans are communicators and always will be. From cave writings to pictographs and from historic paintings to digital art, that's what we have always done, and I don't think that will change in the future. We crave the human touch and I choose to be optimistic on that.

amazing, "life in every breath" become "life in every stroke" . each painting and each stroke have a lot more to tell then ai prompt. it's not matter how good is your prompt no one cant take the "humanity" from a painting or a photo. thanks for sharing .
I started to try drawing this year but i gave up some months ago, because when i compared my art to AI art i got depressed with the result, Notting i did came close
It's like every other skill: it takes practice and time. Far more so than natural 'talent'. Creatives are often never happy with what they've created, regardless of their skill level. Can't let that get you down: push through and keep practicing. You'll grow.
Did someone really ask you why you kept painting? What has the world come to... Last I checked, painters and artists in general create the exactly what they want, Ai is just composited photographs meshed together into a vague prompt, it has no meaning, it doesn't EVEN have a physical showcase, it's not real, and unbeknownst to half of society, Ai is not sentient, just a program that fixates google-like searches into picture form. People are getting to excited by new things and overblowing the proportions of what it is. It's the equivalent of giving an artists a prompt you want and paying them for a painting (or drawing), knowing that you didn't make it and that they wouldn't be putting their name on it either since it would be for you (since they paid for obscurity). The artists won't get your exacts right, just like Ai won't...and often, Ais interpretations are very cliche basics found on google image searches. I can draw a forest scene and add sharp rocky mountains in the background whereas I'm 100% sure that Ai will add a forest covered lower mountain in the background. I can even add a hobbit house on the side and Barad Dur in the backdrop on the mountain in any art style or detailing I want..whereas Ai can try, and will probably fail. Why does Ai get away with imperfections? Because artists like to draw vague occasionally, and it fits the same look as when an artists draws a house that fades into the fog with unconnected lines like an architects sketch book.. it's meant to represent just how beautifully real the process is..same too with drawings of faces with proportional line drawing in the face still. Ai still fails at this since it's used to finishing the result everytime, and humans can stop at any part they want, they also create results they didn't intend that change the meaning of their picture entirely. Inspiration by a simple mark of paint! All of a sudden your forest picture has a dark blue mark on it that looks like a 1650 galleon in the distance, and just like that, now you've decided to make your picture based around puritan settling in america instead of a modern day forest scene. AI can not do that. Also the pride of making your own art FAR FAR FAR outways an Ai result that requires 2% effort to give it information on what you want in the end result. People who give up, represent modern societies death of imagination, who embrace modern because the lack of understanding of what modern means.. thinking that they'll be seen as old for not joining and "staying behind". Hell, I've been staying behind and now I'm painting the most beautiful (drawing, sorry, drawing, I can not paint---not yet) the most beautiful colored cars from circa 1940, in front of a Hollywood hotel, with a lady wearing a emerald rayon coat walking through the door behind, overhead palm trees and the warm lighting inside of a specifically art deco interior. People today have nothing anymore, there's no 2024 highlight! I just realized how sad other people around me must be, seeing history as a old useless offensive thing, shunning themselves from everything but the excitement of ..self driving cars?, new genders? Ai take over? War and the riot message to change things like that'll work? Even car colors were getting more colorful around 2021 with all the metallic varieties around christmas time..(I was parked at an Ikea store with a maroon, dark emerald green, and a BIEGE SUV right next to me, my eyes bugged for a second because that would be an extremely common color combination around that 1940 time frame). So yes, people, never give up, don't repel history, don't submit to something that has no power over you except your physical belief that it does, and don't give up on yourself...art will never be obsolete and it's these dystopian ideologies only that cut us off from seeing how much we are capable of. Don't forget who created Ai.
It can for sure be a scary time for many, but I like what you said, "art will never be obsolete." I really believe that as well and think that we will adjust and move forward. Thanks for all your insights and thoughts
I don't take starting a fire lightly. Everything was green and soaked from a recent rain. I packed it with snow when finished and buried it the next morning before leaving.
Chuck is an experienced woodsman/outdoorsman. No worries. He would never, ever do anything that would risk the land that he so deeply loves and respects.

Sounds like an Artifix brand panel. Cant wait till you move on to some Lead white! Its not as bad as people make it out to be, just dont use it as mayo on ur sandwiches and youll be fine. The subtleties make it a such a more beautiful white to use.

Glad you liked it! Yes, certainly been missing out on the lead ground. Ya it is artefex, but I'm priming them myself as I don't like the texture from the way they apply the ground. I have had lead white on hand for years and it wasn't enough to convince me, so, I wont be using it anymore. My favorite artist Terry Redlin didn't know who he was by the end of his life and retired from painting very early on. His family said it was from repeated exposure to lead as his favorite color was lead white. Sorry, I can't bring myself to do it! Appreciate it very much thanks again

Oh I definitely care, I'm just more optimistic that we will find a way like we always have and at the end of the day, we as humans are communicators and have always been that. I suspect it will lead to a new normal, rather than the destruction of artists.
Well the AI topic sure sparks a conversation doesn’t it?! Computers were feared in the early stages. Yet we somehow figured out how to work with it and around it. I would have a heck of a hard time if I couldn’t use today’s technology in terms of reference photos or simply going onto TH-cam to learn from other artists. There’s always negative side effects to things, but I have faith in humanity. If I were to quit painting because people just use AI for a pet portrait, then that simply is not my audience or client pool. Like minded people will find each other.
Dear Chuck, you are accurate. To the five senses art can be very pleasing, when produced by man's machine. However, art produced by an artist, as we are being human, has an accompanying spirit. It can be positive or negative in its energy. Many are able to discern its spiritual energy. There are those artist, who possess a deep, passionate love of what they wish to convey and the manner in which they will convey it. Beautiful work, Chuck. I am definitely a fan. I wish I lived there. It is where I was born to be, I think. But, I am here and I do painting for my church magazine of places and people that I have never seen anywhere but in my heart. Paintings are emotions come to life.

The debate about AI is ongoing. I’ve been on the same page as you, stating that AI will not replace the human element in art. I feel AI can be a help as well, but then I say this, finding that when I used AI to show me ideas of something I couldn’t capture with a camera in the moment, AI failed me. So no matter how good AI gets, we as artists still have to rely on our own minds to create the story we want to tell. Technology is great, but I think the human experience is greater.
Your first painting of this video was well executed. The campfire at the end really made the painting. Something so simple can make a bold statement.
I’m in awe of your clouds. I need more work in that area. I try to do paintings where I incorporate an awesome sky, just so I can try to duplicate it. Apparently you have better skies where you live. 😊

The sad thing is that while AI may generate technically perfect images, it will still be worthless. Because us humans purposely bend those rules and may even intentionally make ‘mistakes’ to make our art personal and unique.
Also…humans will want art made by humans.
If anything (in my opinion) AI will drive up the price of Human Art because it will be more rare. Many aspiring artist will ‘give up’ trying to ‘be better’ than AI.

Much like those DJ's who do mashups, A.I programs NEED real artists work to syphon information from for its algorithms to generate images.
When real artists work has gone- no new movements or styles are being created - A.i can no longer generate new work and eventually all AI will populate the same repetitive images. Thankfully we are already seeing the backlash today, both artist and buyers are seeking out true human made artwork. I think the bigger issue is many younger artists have been deceived into this 'put out mass content' and are using AI art to generate ideas for there artwork which I think makes them mentally lazy and robs them of their own development of their internal spirit & imagination.
That's why more than ever, I believe we need to be encouraging and inspiring our younger generations to get outside more in nature and learn about our natural world.
So raw and honest ... thankyou! from another artist ... :)
And that's why nature needs to be protected...care about it..
As AI grows and hundreds of thousands of acres are stripped to add solar panels and windmills, or coal mines and oil wells to feed electricity to the servers, you might become concerned. It will then be too late.
I really appreciate your work. I'm afraid another aspect of AI will be the dilution of an artist's opportunity to tell their stories. We could not have these fireside chats on Tictoc. If TH-cam pulls an Instagram we might never see your videos again.

Oh I definitely share concerns about it, just not specifically when it comes to our desire for handmade art, writings, music.. Thank you for the kind words and hopefully not, either way, I'll continue to create
AI's a tool, nothing more, and can be used to give an artist inspiration. I've used it as the starting point for something, but it tend to be rather flat and uninspired (if I were to paint that item as it was generated, it doesn't look like much). By the time I'm done, there's much more depth and reality to it, and you can still see the base in there...but it's now been given a human-level of interpretation.
Similarly, AI scenes aren't real. That bothers me less as I do some fantasy and imagination inspired art anyway, but the AI won't tend to deviate from the classical interpretations of said images, whereas I definitely do. I like to paint things transitionally, or objects and creatures interposed, and it's just not something AI is very good at--yet, anyway.
That's a good perspective. I think we'll find that it will be just that in the end, a tool, when it comes to all forms of 'art'

Chuck, this video is fantastic! It's been a while since I've been able to keep up with your progress, and I have a lot of catching up to do. You look and sound so much more relaxed from the last time I was able to keep up with you. I moved here with mom over 9 1/2 years ago, to take care of her, after my dad died. I lost her three and a half months ago. I'd not even tried to keep up my painting, in the last few years - priorities. This video has rekindled a measure of longing to get back into painting. I'm still in a bit of a rough stage, and that might take a while to get past, but maybe painting again would be a kind of "freeing" thing for me. It's really great to see you and see the absolutely splendid things you are doing! All the best!

This was a similar fear Artists had when the camera was invented, but what was created was a whole new genre of art. Impressionism gave Artist freedom of self expression, and I think what will happen with AI is we will be given the freedom to become even more self expressive and to add more of our own stories.

The only artists who are not concerned about AI are art bloggers. And hobby artists, of course. Still, if there will be less young artists because AI steal jobs, bloggers would have less subscribers. AI improves too fast to not to be concerned about it. Still, relaxing video, thanks.
I make very little money from youtube or 'blogging'.. In fact, it's not even close to enough to pay my monthly expenses. I certainly am concerned on the grander scale impact AI will have, but with artwork, I believe that we as humans are communicators and always will be. From cave writings to pictographs and from historic paintings to digital art, that's what we have always done, and I don't think that will change in the future. We crave the human touch and I choose to be optimistic on that.

I started to try drawing this year but i gave up some months ago, because when i compared my art to AI art i got depressed with the result, Notting i did came close
It's like every other skill: it takes practice and time. Far more so than natural 'talent'. Creatives are often never happy with what they've created, regardless of their skill level. Can't let that get you down: push through and keep practicing. You'll grow.

Did someone really ask you why you kept painting? What has the world come to...
Last I checked, painters and artists in general create the exactly what they want, Ai is just composited photographs meshed together into a vague prompt, it has no meaning, it doesn't EVEN have a physical showcase, it's not real, and unbeknownst to half of society, Ai is not sentient, just a program that fixates google-like searches into picture form. People are getting to excited by new things and overblowing the proportions of what it is. It's the equivalent of giving an artists a prompt you want and paying them for a painting (or drawing), knowing that you didn't make it and that they wouldn't be putting their name on it either since it would be for you (since they paid for obscurity). The artists won't get your exacts right, just like Ai won't...and often, Ais interpretations are very cliche basics found on google image searches. I can draw a forest scene and add sharp rocky mountains in the background whereas I'm 100% sure that Ai will add a forest covered lower mountain in the background. I can even add a hobbit house on the side and Barad Dur in the backdrop on the mountain in any art style or detailing I want..whereas Ai can try, and will probably fail.
Why does Ai get away with imperfections? Because artists like to draw vague occasionally, and it fits the same look as when an artists draws a house that fades into the fog with unconnected lines like an architects sketch book.. it's meant to represent just how beautifully real the process is..same too with drawings of faces with proportional line drawing in the face still. Ai still fails at this since it's used to finishing the result everytime, and humans can stop at any part they want, they also create results they didn't intend that change the meaning of their picture entirely. Inspiration by a simple mark of paint! All of a sudden your forest picture has a dark blue mark on it that looks like a 1650 galleon in the distance, and just like that, now you've decided to make your picture based around puritan settling in america instead of a modern day forest scene. AI can not do that.
Also the pride of making your own art FAR FAR FAR outways an Ai result that requires 2% effort to give it information on what you want in the end result. People who give up, represent modern societies death of imagination, who embrace modern because the lack of understanding of what modern means.. thinking that they'll be seen as old for not joining and "staying behind". Hell, I've been staying behind and now I'm painting the most beautiful (drawing, sorry, drawing, I can not paint---not yet) the most beautiful colored cars from circa 1940, in front of a Hollywood hotel, with a lady wearing a emerald rayon coat walking through the door behind, overhead palm trees and the warm lighting inside of a specifically art deco interior. People today have nothing anymore, there's no 2024 highlight! I just realized how sad other people around me must be, seeing history as a old useless offensive thing, shunning themselves from everything but the excitement of ..self driving cars?, new genders? Ai take over? War and the riot message to change things like that'll work? Even car colors were getting more colorful around 2021 with all the metallic varieties around christmas time..(I was parked at an Ikea store with a maroon, dark emerald green, and a BIEGE SUV right next to me, my eyes bugged for a second because that would be an extremely common color combination around that 1940 time frame).
So yes, people, never give up, don't repel history, don't submit to something that has no power over you except your physical belief that it does, and don't give up on yourself...art will never be obsolete and it's these dystopian ideologies only that cut us off from seeing how much we are capable of. Don't forget who created Ai.

I don't take starting a fire lightly. Everything was green and soaked from a recent rain. I packed it with snow when finished and buried it the next morning before leaving.
Chuck is an experienced woodsman/outdoorsman. No worries. He would never, ever do anything that would risk the land that he so deeply loves and respects.
