- Dig into the science of radiosurgery: a procedure that uses light beams of radiation to target tumors, without making a single incision.
--
Every year, tens of thousands of people have brain surgery without a single incision: there’s no scalpel, no operating table, and the patient loses no blood. Instead, this procedure uses a machine that emits invisible beams of light at a precise target inside the brain. So how exactly does this treatment work? And what does it do to the tumors it targets? Hyunsoo No explains radiosurgery.

i'm so glad we live in a day of modern medicine, imagine needing brain surgery even just in the 30s
Aren't we already heading towards it? (30's)
Yo legit they didn't even drug the patients straight but drilling the skulls and hoping it will work

The extreme happiness is felt when Ted -Ed uploads a video and you are online .😁
It is amazing how ted ed makes science fun! (at least for me who finds it tedious and difficult)

Today: Medicine is not just an art, it is a business.
Always has been.
Very true...
Commerce to be specific.
And the art outweighs the business for sure
Yup...For hospitals, not doctors.

Science is not a study it's our life
I had a mysterious headache for months, but I had no money even to do a CT scan. So, I decided to go to a neurologist and took medicine. Alhamdulillah, I am recovered now.
So stimulating
*WoW!*
I like to think I have a good general knowledge about science and technology, but I had no idea this existed.
Psychology is an art.
This is so COOL! I wonder how much the procedure costs, though.
Awesome
I love hearing stuff l Iike this. I have a brain tumor but it's not cancerous, so not an option for me. But thank goodness for this treatment.
It's Really intresting to Know about this kind of different ways to cure this kind of illnesses
if deceases/illnesses were puzzles, then cancer is an extreme-difficulty one. Seriously, humanity has been tackling cancers with great ingenuity and collaboration yet they persist. No matter, I'm hopeful cancer-curing rate will be near 100% after 3 decades
As someone with OCD, I yelled, "YES! PLEASE, GOD!"
Yes this looks better than cutting brain and remove tumors in patients
But must be little more improved
Kudos

I lied in my resume now I got a interview as a brain surgeon tomorrow

When TEDed can explain your chosen subject of study better than your lecturers.
Wow, my university needs to simplify things haha. This makes my future career seem so much simpler! Haha
Intriguing
I needed this about to do surgery and I have Know idea how it's works
In my opinion, science *is* an art.
TedEd has become oddly specific in their titles and what they present!... but it still sounds incredibly interesting.
Nice
My class appreciated this video. FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SRS is really important for every country
As amazing as this is, I learnt of even better technology on the horizon that uses particles that only emit energy after certain delays, allowing even safer and more precise and safe operations as the beams do not react with matter until they reach their destination. And it was only made possible with the discovery of new particles at the Large Hadron Collider. I believe a facility already exists in Germany and another is being developed in the UK. It's a massive building (a small collider) built all to operate on a small few patients at a time. I'd write more but I am in a hurry (was watching this on my lunch break) and cannot recall all the details.
Three hooras for science!!!
So you are telling that I don't have to use my pocket knife for my brain cancer instead a lazer pen. Brilliant!
Hmm, minor correction:
At 2:53, there shouldn't be a + and - signs near the particles. They are radicals, which means they have unpaired electrons and are very chemically active because of that.
its cool to see doctors take inspiration from spongbob
I would just like to point out that this radiation surgery is not only limited to cancerous tumors but can also be used on non-begnine tumors.
Usually in places where the tumor is located can pose high risks for normal surgery to take place and so this is used.
If you had pointed it out and I missed I apologise. But I love the explanation 👍
Well now I know the answer to that curious tangents video.

I’ve never clicked so fast in my life
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude that is so cool! I bet it's expensive.
My mom had meningioma, her dirst operation was with a scalpel, they got a tiny ball shaped tunor out. After 2 years she suddenly collapsed on the floor and had a spasm, the cancer was back. This time they decided to use radiation therapy instead, they still had to bore holes and screw her head onto a placeholder though, it was extremely painful, just as much as regular surgey was what my mother told me.
Can you tell me what you use to animate your videos please
I had gamma knife 7 years ago, and in 3 years, if it hasn’t come back, I will know the radiation worked successfully! 2 days ago I had an MRI and the scar tissue has shrunken! Thank you modern science
I should be out there, finding a new research topic. been at it for hours, and just came by to watch this *sigh*
The idea of using several beams so that the normal cells remain unharmed is really smart
"Okay, William, this won't hurt a bit."
