I played 64 for the first time on the DS at a young enough age that I still had that childlike sense of wonder; exploring the levels for secrets and unlocking new characters was a blast. It wasn't until I was a little older that I could really recognise how good mario's movement tools feel to traverse the stages, though. Good video

How about not using it and actually exploring the islands? You could say "I shouldn't make things harder for myself", but I could say "I can play an RPG on the lowest difficulty and 1 shot everything, but I'll play on hard mode anyway cuz it's more fun".
Frontiers is such a fun game (9/10 not 7/10 you hater) when exploring the islands and participating in plenty of different activities.
Now there's nothing wrong with giving examples for game design choices you don't like, but in the same vein I can complain about stuff in Mario 64. Stuff like: the red coins being b*tches to collect, the controls being slippery, Rainbow Ride being a boring auto-scroller and the repetitive bosses. "You got another 7/10 experience and you should accept your fate".

@@Dylonic Also, another major disagreement is the progression system. You complain that in Frontiers you just collect stuff, whereas you praise Mario 64 for... just collecting stuff. That seems unfair. In both games you do platforming courses and a buncha other tasks to get McGuffins, and in both games you unlock more locations after beating a major boss. It's the same bloody game loop, what's the real difference?

@@themenacingsloth and what's weird is most of the notable N64 games that aren't this aged really well all things considered. Like if the Switch Ports weren't so awful, I could see myself enjoying Jet Force Gemini and Banjo Kazooie, they look and sound amazing and *should* play well without that horrendous input lag. I also set up PJ64 *just* so I could try out Mischief Makers
The year was 2011, it was christmas and I got my first ever video game console, the Nintendo Wii. That was where I discovered my favorite game of all time, Super Mario Galaxy.
Here I am 13 years later and I'm still playing it.
But in 2016 or 2017, my dad got me Super Mario 64 on the Wii U virtual console, even though the graphics were horrible, camera was awful, I still enjoyed it and in fact, I loved it. No other mario game I've played has had movement as fun as in Mario 64. I'm glad you learned to enjoy this masterpiece, and I'm happy the algorythm recomended your video!

i think sm64 is fine. it's sluggish and frustrating - but WHENEVER something works the way you want it to, it's oh so rewarding
I was born in 2004 and I have loved SM64 for 9-10 Years now and its definitely been the best Mario game out there the SpeedRunning side TAS side and of course the Rom Hack community SM64 Rom Hacks is so much better than vanilla SM64

Mario64 was my first ever game. I played it over and over and over as a child. Even now, I still go back and just beat it. I never understood why, but alot of the points you made really ring true to why I seem to return every so often. It makes me want to boot up the old n64 and play it again.
That’s how its been especially recently. It’s such a good game to just hop in and mess around with when you’re bored or have nothing to do. A huge testament to just how good the game is

I had a very similar experience with Super Metroid. The Ridley room not being connected direct with early norfair is highly unforgivable tho.

The funny part is I actually really enjoy Sonic Frontiers and am a Sonic fan myself. I like running around doing dumb stuff and even Cyberspace but I loathe replaying the game. I think if they refine the Open Zone formula in the next game they'll have a real winner
In Mario 64, you wanna use your kicks. You can use it to hold in the air for a bit and make micro corrections. I speak from experience. 💪 Think of it as this games fluud, Luma or cappy. Regardless, great video. 👍
It's interesting to see the newer generations tackle games from before their times and see what they can learn from them. I've been on this road myself, tackling games and media from outside my scope and genre and coming to an appreciation for what they come to offer.
As someone who got to see Mario 64 arrive the shockwave it generated in influence in 3D platforming games was unparalleled, akin to what BOTW was to game design after its release. The N64 had several titles that had experimental and unrefined game mechanics that today we take for granted. Just the analog sticks alone were revolutionary, if you play old PS1 games there's a significant amount that use the Dpad for movement and god is it clunky, tank controls were the norm before Mario 64 hit the shelves.
Anyhow, nice vid, there's some redundancy in the descriptors you use, so be sure to give it a check in your scripts, but overall the quality of your work is pretty well polished, keep it up!

Actually I had a similar issue with to you in a way except for I first played banjo and kazooie before Mario 64 and it became a drag to play never really been able to get into it
