Hiram is the "BOSS" when it comes to TH-cam transmission videos - NO ONE DOES THEM BETTER. Most people who are employed as professional ASC certification instructors could learn a lot from this man when it comes to teaching and transmission service techniques. Compare this video to ANY other transmission rebuild/teardown video on TH-cam. You will quickly reach the same conclusion that I did years ago. This guy is clearly in a league of his own.

Love these transmissions, and the W body vehicles they are installed in! I did the DIY shift kit on my 98 GTP, 2-3 accumulator spring in the 1-2 accumulator as well as a 3/4 steel spacer in both accumulators. Car had zero issues shaking the tires into 3rd when you were flogging it! Had good manners when just cruising as well!

You do great videos, so much to cover, I rebuilt a 700r4 with the help of your video, then ran into the situation of having to buy the $100 bore tool and updated valve for the tcc lockup issue because the bore was worn and the original valve was prone to wear out because of its size, because of that valve I still had issues with the valve leaking causing slippage which was what caused my transmission to fail in the first place.
While I had it out and torn down I also installed the trans go upgrade spring kit and had to replace the plastic servo pistons with aluminum ones to prevent future issues as you noted in your video. I also I installed repair grommets on the valve body plate where the check balls wear out the plate. The transmission works better now than when it was new.
Been going strong towing heavy loads for 3 years now with no problems. Trial and error and patience is a learning process but it helps to address every known issue before you rebuild and have those parts ready. After all with all the work involved you want the trans to last.
The problem with all these transmissions is you are not just replacing seals bearings and clutch packages, there are numerous parts that had design flaws that needed upgraded part replacements like the sun gear issue with the 700r4 you mentioned in your video which I did replace out of caution even though it looked okay. I find you have to do the tear down, inspect every part carefully, research every fix and upgrade so while it is apart you can get all the needed parts to address every design issue to prevent other possible problem in the future because of the failure of the factory original non improved used parts you reinstall.
In this video you did not cover much about the issue with the valve in the plate which is a common problem, I believe it was the modulator valve, I understand there are 2 fixes for it, either boring it out re sleeve it and put in the new valve in the kit, or superior offers a k-098 kit to address the valve leakage issue that does not require boring, it uses a plug and new valve

I am thrilled you got one of these units to rebuild. I wish it happened earlier, back when I was rebuilding my own 4T65e-HD unit. You have covered a few details not included in the service manuals or the updated technical specs manuals. Information that would have saved me some time on the build and a lot of time on the intensive research I did.
My 2nd clutch pack had the excessive play - I was unaware the steels were available in variable thickness at the time. I tried the trick of adding one of the original steels to the assembly, but the tolerance was too tight. Without it, it was too loose. I played it safe and went with the too loose option. Since the rebuild, my transaxle still runs great to this day. I have the occasional 1-2 long shift issue, but it's a rare thing. The MAX ADEPT (not max adapt) code gets flagged when it happens.
The updated spline drive was implemented in 2004 BTW. I made sure to get that part. I also added the clamp for the accumulator lines. The one thing I wanted to try, but didn't have the detailed information for is this trick.. Adding a 'squirter' line to the differential. I've seen this done on a forum somewhere and it caught my interest. GM has a high performance rebuild manual for these units too. They use only 3 forward gears instead of 4. GM also produced an upgraded input shaft that retailed at $1,200. This part is no longer available. It was designed without the groove for the O-Ring, the first thing you removed in this video. Another company makes a high performance input shaft for around $600. I couldn't justify that cost as it is more than I paid for all the replacement parts from my local parts supplier.
I also included the transgo shift correction kit and a re-manufactured torque converter. I must say - I really enjoyed going through the process of the rebuild and the research involved to get it right the first time. Well, almost right, minus that intermittent long shift issue. I found your videos to be most helpful and I can't express to you how much I appreciate your feedback when I hit you up with my questions.
Hiram, thank you so much for sharing your skill with us! You are an amazing technician and your video's are an awesome learning tool that provides an excellent supplement to the tech manuals. I hope you have been able to share my southern engineered J-Tools with a few people who don't have the real deal. One of these days, I will go through all the photos I took during my rebuild and make a good video to share. I need to add the engine rebuild and the other special modifications implemented along the way.
In the meantime, I have uploaded a few locksmith and security videos on this channel if you have any interest on that subject. This one is my favorite. It may be old, but it has great info that still applies to this day. -- th-cam.com/video/xU_0OVygEMY/w-d-xo.html

Main things replaced: clutch internal and external rings with teeth(some broken), reverse servo bands that squeeze the clutch I believe were somewhat burned, 4th clutch shaft (splines were stripped halfway down), chain scoop was replaced, transmission mounts, main control valve body, internal harness, sonnax actuator feed limit valve, pressure control solenoid, 3rd clutch spring, 1st and 2nd support bands and torque converter. Some small things were replaced also but that’s most of the big stuff. The transmission now runs great.

Thanks for the great tear down video. I have a 2007 Chevy HHR with the 4T65e. I have noise coming from the TC area. When the car is off and I strike the pan withe the palm of my hand I get a noise that sounds like a band of metal vibrating on the inside of the pan or like screws loose and laying in there. The car has 77,000 miles and per the manual the filter and fluid has not been changed. What is my best couse at this point?

Wow mate great job. Where's your shop location? I got the 4T65E HD which still working but has some big loose/delay between reverse and drive gear. It also need a performance upgrade so I can turbo charge the LS4. There is so much bad reviews about transmission shop in my location so i don't trust them with my transmission...

I have a trouble-shooting question. First, let me say, I sure appreciate your posting such good Videos. I am sure you have helped a lot of people.
Ok - 2002 Monte SS (3800-not super charged) - 0nly 75k miles on the car. It has a long delay on the 1 to 2 shift. After the delay, it sometimes goes right to 3rd and seems to skip 2nd. I can manually go through each gear, but there will still be a long delay for it to shift into 2nd. 2-3 and 3-4 all work fine. Seems to get worse the warmer the car gets. Every once in a while, when you first drive in the morning, it shifts normal for a few blocks, but then the delay starts in 100% of the time. No codes set. Fluid and filter are clean, nothing unusual in the Pan. Any idea what would be the best approach? Shift Solenoid? I saw you talk about the Molded Piston possibly causing a slow 1-2 shift. Just wondering what your best guess is?

Done work on these. They can be very troublesome if you're lacking the experience to work on them. Mine is a 4T65E HD. They were mated to 3.8L engines that had superchargers on them and also the 5.3 V8. The HD version has a stronger final drive and the CV axle input is larger on the passenger side

Amazingly complicated- much respect to you for your knowledge on this. How long can these transmissions be expected to last on average assuming regular fluid and filter changes and that you don’t beat the crap out of it?

Hi Hiram, great video, I'm in the middle of a rebuild of a Volvo 4T65-E trans and have a question re the pump driveshaft. I have fitted the new seal to the groove in the boss on the driveshaft but when it is installed inside the sleeve which comes through the channel plate it seems loose and is not contacting the sleeve. Not sure if this is normal or am I missing something? Thanks for your videos. It has made this whole job so much easier, Cheers.

    Hiram,
I really enjoyed your video on tear down. You are very through and explain in great detail. I have a question you can probably answer. Girlfriend had trans in her 2005 Rendezvous CXL rebuilt(very reputable shop). Ran fine for awhile, then started with door locks opening and closing, shift indicator would move back and forth between drive and park, and would drop about 1000 rpms, all while driving at highway speeds. Eventually, when stopped and leaving a stop it wouldn't do anything and all of a sudden it would slam into gear. It never threw a code. Took it back to tranny shop,he said it was the BCM. He replaced and it still did same thing. Shop refused to do anymore. We didn't drive for awhile and are driving more now but nothing at all has happened. It does have a 3 year warranty but what can they look for if it's not acting up at the time they have vehicle? What think you young wizard? Thanks very much.

I just wanna say how helpful ur vids have been! Also could u gimme a list of ALL possible causes for no forward gears? I think I counted 3 that u mentioned. Are there anymore? You can hear & feel it go into reverse, then neutral, but when go into Drive or low gears, can't hear or feel anything. I already replaced all solenoids, wiring harness, pump, forward band wasn't broken.

Thank you the extensive tutorial, I can see you’ve done that before. My tranny sometimes has no forward or reverse after sitting a spell, shut the car off once or twice and it works fine. To me, it seems electrical or valve body problem with no codes. ....It’s an overhaul. And after watching your video, I’m not getting into it. Thanks again I enjoyed it.

I have a 2005 chevy impala, 3,4 motor 4t65e tranmission. It pulls but is very slow at shifting ,an acts like it doesn't want too shift from first , but if you drive it easy and give it about 3 too 4 seconds it will shift, it does make a funny sound for about 1 second and then it will shift too all the rest of the gears, an go really good , I change all new solenoids and still does it. It shows no engine codes .
