      He was the territory's biggest heel for a few years, no other manager can brag about being that important to a territory ever (Bobby was important to the AWA, but never the top heel at the very heart of the promotion).

      Sometimes he was actually acting as both onscreen and offscreen managers for certain guys. He would negotiate with promoters on their behalf and even take care of their travel arrangements.

      Some guys did both. Paul Ellering was the actual manager of the Road Warriors. Same with SOH and the Hollywood Blondes. Gary was the same with many of his guys. Actually, same with Cornette. He did the bookings for the Midnights.

    Ron Wright in Smoky Mountain with the Redd Foxx gimmick of being a crochety old man with the fake heart attack was hilarious. Gary Hart was a great manager because of his charisma and presence at ringside. James Mitchell should be managing guys like Bray Wyatt.

      The role of the face manager in the WWE was to occasionally get beat up by the heels or to do something like throw in the towel to end a match. The face manager was around to create situations where something bad would happen but it wouldn't happen to the wrestler. If he gets beat up, his guy takes revenge. If they want the wrestler to lose in a screwy way, they have the manager cause the loss.
      Arnold Skaaland's other role in the 1970s was to collect the promotion's share of the money from the box office (in cash) at arenas and get it back "home". He was a combination money collector and money guard.

    I remember Dr. Ken Ramey. He had two pretty good sized runs in the SF Bay Area for Roy Shires. First in the early 70's managing a Canadian wrestler Paul DeMarco. Then returned around '72 with the Masked Interns (I think they were the Masked Medics when they worked the east coast). Then a short run in '78 with Playboy Buddy Rose. He wore a cheesy tuxedo with a ruffled shirt and a clip-on bow tie and had kind of a "down-home" Southern drawl. He could generate some pretty good heat against the likes of Ray Stevens, Pat Patterson and Rocky Johnson. There is a little bit of video of him. Type in "San Francisco Wrestling" in the search and some of it will come up. He actually had an amateur wrestling background as a young man.

    Sir Oliver Humperdinck had a good run in the mid-80s,--I grew up in the Mid South area, and there was a time when he gave General Skandar Akbar (who I also liked) a run for his money. I liked "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert better as a manager than as a wrestler, because to me, he was a better talker--a comedian--almost on par with Cornette and Jimmy Hart. They should have made Gilbert a manager permanently, instead of a half and half, because his wrestling skills weren't all that great, in my opinion.

    There is something what i don't understand...! Mortis was a WCW character who has almost always been disliked by fellow wrestlers...! I don't get it because i think Mortis with James Vandenberg was fucking great...!!! Way better than Glacier or Wrath...! His mask (Leatherface) and his whole entrance (including the great theme) was awesome....!!! I think Mortis (Chris Kanyon) should have been pushed a lot more...!!!

    This will sound strange, but Paul Jones was so horrible that I considered him amazing. He was as wooden as a tree, and his spots always went nowhere. Prior to the Road Warriors and Powers of Pain feud, he spent years focused on Jimmy “The Boogie Woogie Man” Valiant. And not a single person understood the rivalry. He often did spots saying: “you’ve interfered with my plans for the last time”. Plans, what plans?!? Even his aforementioned thing with the Road Warriors was simply him saying: “Powers of Pain! Powers of Pain!” Again, he never really made a point. And the funniest thing was the way he pronounced The Barbarian as The Bah Barren

    Paul Jones had ONE good moment as a manager. He was great in the angle between the Road Warriors and the Powers of Pain. Especially the bench press. Other than that, its difficult to say much about him as a manager because he managed alot of lesser talent and was stuck in that multi-year feud with Jimmy Valiant.

    "The Graham Wizard" was awesome. Like Jimmy Hart "The Graham Wizard" was the least physically imposing. Yet, "The Graham Wizard" had the bravado and heart to take on 250 pound plus Grapplers with no hesitation to ensure victory for Greg Valentine, Don "The Magnificent" Muraco.

    I think the Grand Wizard is far too neglected. There was a stretch in the 1970s when he was the epicenter of the Northeast heel scent, both in the WWF and Detroit.

    Jim, Heenan, Gary Hart, Ernie Roth, Bobby Davis, Wild Red Berry, Hump, JJ, Percy Pringle III (NOT Paul Bearer) and....Hmmmm..... Saul Weingerhoff. Not necessarily in that order (other than Jim and Bobby, who will always be snarling for that #1 spot).
    I think George Canon was over-rated, and JR Foley in Stampede was under-rated (although he did himself no favours with his choice of moustache). My jury is still out WRT Don Carson, Eddie Creatchman, and Jimmy Hart (most in Hart's case because I've seen next to nothing of his Memphis work, but his WWF period did not impress me).

    At least in late 1997 and 1998, I don't remember Sonny Onoo doing a damn thing in WCW besides selfies. He wasn't a mouth piece for any of his wrestlers since none of them ever did enough to be in a real feud. Onoo was just kinda... there during the luchadore matches. Then with Yuji Nagata, who never feuded with anybody, so what the hell did he need a manager for?

    • @Vinnce12
      @Vinnce12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd chalk that up to WCW's lackadaisical attitude regarding their international talent more than anything. On rewatching old WCW shows I found myself enjoying Sonny's presence on screen. I can't help wonder how memorable he'd be if he were saddled with someone that WCW had an interest in promoting.
