I built flame wings for a fire Pegasus using hot glue, floral wire and feathers. The tips of the wings were flames of hot glue, and the structure of the wings is a lattice of hot glue, covered in feathers. You can build things in 3D with hot glue if you give the first layer time to cool (pop it in the freezer for a minute or two) before adding the next one.

Hey TKOR, I have a suggestion you might be interested in. When you put PLA out onto the rubber mat, it was cool enough to not let the molten PLA stick to it. As you know, a 3D printer often heats the print bed to 50-60°C from the PLA transferring onto it from a temperature of 220°. Try a heated surface to overcome slipping away of molten PLASTICK from the gun.

Btw, it is possible to make realistic roses with simple hot glue, if you roll it while it's still hot enough to flatten it without it sticking. Also, I used parchment paper, the glue won't stick to it.

Excluding the motion control functionality of a 3d printer, the rest of it is just a glorified glue gun basically.
    Problems with your setup:
    1) printers have heated beds to help with cohesion, and to help prevent rapid cooling.
    2) average nozzle diameter is 0.4mm and I'm fairly certain that is significantly smaller than standard glue guns.
    3) the funneling ratio for 3d printers is ~4.25/1 which help to functionally push the filament out by pressure rather than a trigger function using the backend solid matter as a plunger, thus a smooth flow of outbound material.
I imagine it would not be that hard to modify any standard glue gun to function like a 3d pen, but not a printer.
Never the less... awesome episode, I totally thought those printed glue sticks were not going to work, were they solid or infilled geometry?

If nothing else you'd be testing the thermal shock properties of the glue.

What a coincidence! 😃 I actually thought about this idea just a few days ago, and wanted to try it out myself! So thanks for doing it for me! 😂👍

those 3d printing guns drive me mad 😂 my sister has had 3 and all 3 break so easily and take forever to try and build anything and don't funnel through fast enough for me

I can see the glue gun working as a fixing gun for 3d prints, or filling holes in a print. That way could be very useful.

I got my 3D printing pen from ebay for about the same price as a high-temp glue gun, so kind of a mute point if you're gonna get a glue gun just for PLA. the pen I got also works with either PLA or ABS, with a versatile temperature control, so you can play with that until it cools at just the right speed for your taste. somehow heats up way faster than my hot glue gun, too. basically, don't destroy your glue gun to do this, just buy a 3D pen. totally worth it.

You can easily 3D print using a regular glue gun by drawing on ice or in liquid nitrogen

3d printer extruder is not complicated at all. it's a motor with a toothed pulley and a pressure pully that feeds into a heated nozzle.

how about the mini glue sticks? with the smaller diameter stick might melt faster and work even better. maybe something worth testing out? :)

Hot glue and a nice silicone mold (or tinfoil sprayed with Pam as a mold release) and you can make amazing things with hot glue.
It paints well after a layer of primer so you can get amazing textures. Or paint it with nail polish for a gem-y affect.
I've made an entire dice tower, masks, jewels and an entire alien helmet with EL wire inlay.
Since it's slightly flexible, I've used it as a mold material itself to replicate the snakes on the hocus pocus book in epoxy clay. It isn't perfect, but does fine in a pinch.
Since it's translucent, it's also awesome for flame effect for models and cosplay. Just paint it with glass paint, alcohol ink or insert a flickering LED from one of those cheap tea lights.
Use colored hot glue instead of sealing wax for fancy letters.
    You can do so much!!!!

Makes me wonder if you had a nicer adjustable temp gun, and the right plastic, if you could actually make small, durable, useful plastic parts. Like custom pieces for rc cars, Interior pieces, stuff like that.

Side note... this is pretty useful. Looks way stronger than hot glue. Attach buttons on plastic, hold mechanical things in place that hot glue can’t.

Maybe melt the PLA with hot water (or an oven) and the cast the molten plastic in some sort of pvc/steel pipe.

Might be useful for filling small injection moulds for a short run of parts if the flow speed can be increased.
