Man, knife defense is the worst thing to study. It's hard, it's absolutely uncomfortable and has so many variables. And yes, practice practice and more practice
This is the most sensible presentation of how to defend against a knife attack. The discussion on the realism is the most important topic that all must learn about. Real knife attackers, as has been proven in many cctv footages, will not stop at whatever you do to defend yourself. And will not wait for you to do that.
Its great that Aaron calls you out when you say its never going to happen like this, saying mostly not but that he'd posted a video of that situation recently. I constantly see people saying it will or wont happen like xyz and then I find videos of knife attacks where that situation does occur. People need to spend time reviewing the videos of actual knife attack videos that are out there as it seems most attacks are described in a way that allow the technique the instructors are describing to work.
7:35 I noticed that too. He got his wrestlers headbutt in there nice and perfectly without damaging you. In a real fight he coulda broke your jaw with that headbutt.
Another great video, and even more great information from Aaron. He is full of knowledge, and one that heavily pressure tests his material as you can see based off his reactions. I actually pressure tested most of what was discussed in this video with my students after a high school fight took place in which the attacker was grabbing and stabbing another student. I stand by Aaron statements that the focus will shift between the grabbing arm and the attacking arm, depending on various variables. The important part as a student is to practice and get comfortable with switching between the two. Great content as always
My thoughts on this: 1. immediately break one's grab regardless if you see a weapon in his other hand or not. 2. Move your body in line with the force of the grabbing arm in order to dissolve it: if he pulls, push yourself and defend against the knife; if he pushes, pull yourself and attack the grabbing arm.
That's good advice! Best defense against a knife attack is running! And deflect that shit so you don't get thrusted into the torso, better get cut in the hands or arms than your heart or lung.
Self defense against a knife, even with the best training there is always a chance to be cut, doesn’t matter how skilled you are. Always remembered that statement from my sensei Wise man.
We were taught in the Marines that while the hand may hurt you, the knife can kill you. If possible, ignore the grab hand and focus on the knife hand. But if you must address the grab hand, you MUST be prepared to quickly transition to defending/defeating the knife. It may not have to be a direct contact with the knife - a good blow to the throat, popping of the ears, etc, can often cripple your opponent such that you can take them. As always, overwhelming violence of action works in your favor.

@@stevecinneide8183 such an ignorant amateur. The dynamics of in close fighting say that a person with a knife who is within 21 feet of you can kill you before you can respond with a gun. I see opportunities for elbow hyperextension and mule kicks in their movements. You guys have great chemistry, by the way! The banter and calm but skilled methods are awesome!
I'm retired now- 66 (mashed between 2 trucks in 99) was fed bodyguard, ex ranger, multiple high ranking black belts in different styles--40 year experience.. been through 1000 documented "transactions" (called that because someone ALWAYS pays- one way or another)..and lost 2. I've NEVER been grabbed- ever. never been choked, grabbed, or anything like that- it has never happened to me. (not saying it doesnt' happen- just never has to ME).. and looks like a great job of training for this.. Wish I could have seen that years ago.. I'm not out where I need that any more. (too bad a shape to use it anyway).. GREAT video and thanks for making that plain to folks that MIGHT need it. I've been in the jungles, deserts, in gang fights in downtown LA and other bad areas-with single and multiple attackers.. all kinds of areas- and as I said NOT ONCE did I get grabbed.. ever. The only guy ever to choke me--regretted it terribly (and he was a "friend" that was more or less joking-- which I found out AFTER he did it).. which is why I said it never happened-- not on the streets, or anywhere for REAL.. GREAT job though- good logic!!!!
Guy asked my coach about knife attacks, coach grabbed a magic marker and proceeded to mark him up saying this could be your blood. Said situational awareness is key
Damn this is good stuff. Glad I found this channel. We always teach in Classic Krav Maga here that you either do one thing right of many things half assed. That's why it's always block, then action. Never block and action the same time. Always better to give your 100% on one thing and then switch to another.
Great ideas! My 1st move may be eye jab, end threat. Gotta change attackers brain from attack to defense. If he's grabbing shirt, I put index finger over middle finger of right hand, go over top of his left arm&put 2 fingers thru his eye. That ends threat. Even if I miss the eye, he sees my fingers coming for his eye&his brain is still switched to defense&he'll move trying to avoid it. Then sweep the leg or do many other opportunities that split second distraction gave you time to do.
I was also thinking of something similar. I would use the impulse of a massive slap on the eye(s) passing my right arm over the oponent's holding arm, and with the same rotating movement escape in opposite direction
4:23 my first thought was to bow low to hyperextend the holding arm. You'd really need to be fast, or hold it in place, but the latter would be very risky. BTW: the fencing stance only occurs when the attacker fears a counterattack, be it a melee weapon, or someone who can really hit hard...
Run, knife hand control or head to the ground are the basic points and all three were excellently demonstrated near the end of this vid..well done good sirs and thanks for the pro tips
Man, the shenanigans in this video make me miss my time at the dojo! 😭😭😭😭 Thanks for the nostalgia! I work 2nds at the moment so I don't get to attend classes.
This is a good video. Over on ASP there was a video in Dubai I believe where a guy got ruthlessly and horrifically stabbed to death after a road rage incident and couldn’t break the grab hand.
Have to be careful with running away though because the chance they can catch up with you can be relatively high and now I'm fighting someone while I have a shortness of breath
If an assailant is attacking you with a knife I think most people would freeze or panic including me, I was always told in a life threatening situation go for the eyes and throat hard and expect to get hurt, but easier said than done scary stuff.
Just a general thought, I've always considered a kimura grip on the knife arm as the most effective thing to do if you have to engage someone with a knife. I feel like it breaks the posture of the knife arm from being able to thrust and it keeps the knife relatively away from you, plus you can destroy the arm or force them to drop it. Anyone any thoughts on this?
Committing two hands to one of theirs is great offensively but leaves you open defensively maybe? He has a free hand to do other damage to you, and if you get knocked unconscious who cares how long you controlled or damaged the knife weilding hand, he can calmly pick the knife up and carve his initials and date into your left ass-cheek (don't ask me why that's the outcome)
Best advice for a guy with a knife is flee. If you can't, just know no matter what type of training you have, you will either be stabbed or slashed, at that point you try to destroy the threat and mitigate how badly you get wounded.
If you rotate your right shoulder to grab behind the elbow with your right hand to prevent multiple stabs while using your left arm to trap or redirect the blade offline, you can defeat the grab and get into a position to destroy the arm holding the knife.
Just run away isn't an option for everyone. If you're like myself, you're slower than most people. So even if I can break to run, I cannot out run. So I've gotta train to always engage the threat.
That's why you strike first - hopefully stop the attacker coming after you for long enough. Also remember that not many attackers will bother to chase you for very long and running if you can't outrun them can still be used to get to a place of safety or at least a more preferable location to be attacked.
I just wanted to comment on the beginning of the video when you said no one would ever come in with that straight to the midsection thrust. It did happen to me about 20 years ago. Someone did try to stab me with that mid straight thrust, so it does happen. I said it on Ramsey’s channel a few months back. My wife had a physically abusive aunt that tried to stab me in the stomach with a butcher knife when I got between her and my daughter. It does happen. I know because it happened to me.
Greetings from Finland! Would love to hear you talk about martial arts/selfdefence for us disabled folks too. Would be interesting to hear your opinion. Been doing ITF Taekwon-Do for 13 years and just reached my 1st dan despite my CP. So can be a proof that it's possible as long as you work hard and keep having fun. Thanks for your wonderful videos!
The technique that I have been taught and that works extremely well is to grab the wrist of the grabbing arm with your opposite hand as you grab that same arm just above the elbow step in and turn (ten kan) the opposite leg slides back and the attacker is slammed into the ground best case or rendered helpless by the extremely painful control or breaking of the grabbing arm.
cool stuff, try throwing your right arm over the grab but instead of going for a grab break, go straight for the 2 on 1. It moves you off-line and gives you an angled attack to the knife arm.
From the positions in the thumbnail, I'd pivot on my right heel, dropping my left foot back behind it and turning my hips out while capturing high on the sleeve of the arm he reach for me with and pulling it down. This will make his knife hand go as far off target as possible and he'll have two choices: raise the knife arm for balance, b/c you don't try to post a hand holding something to catch yourself OR to drop the knife so he can post a hand and catch himself. If our body mechanics are such that the initial pull doesn't floor him, I'd then go for the knife arm directly or quickly after taking his back, before he can try to gouge me over his shoulder or with a chicken wing.
First move. Change the level of the battle. Immediately deliver kicks to his lower leg and knee. Once in pain, go after mid section and groin, then you have the options of disarm or arm bar and pin, or pull your folding knife , slash his wrist and bicep. You should also move to the rt rear to distance yourself from the blade.
They seem to ignore the stab to the face but it's the quickest way to kill in a frontal attack and very difficult to defend if the attacker has grabbed the victem.
No matter what tactic you use, never let that knife hand attack freely. There will be many variations of this attack, like bent horizontal elbow, which could allow for an elbow pass, or collar tie, but NEVER EVER let that knife attack without interruption
Icy mike ... why do you make so much sense 🙄🤷🏼♂️ , I have never watched a video of yours that didn’t address every single aspect of the technique you are teaching , thank god there are good people out there blessed with a healthy dose of common sense 🙏😂
Well... I am able to put a lot more time and thought into this than most people can, and I have a long list of associates I can consult on these topics.
Only had the misfortune of being attacked by a knife wielder twice so I'm not an expert in the matter. Both times I got cut or stabbed. It's fast, far faster than believed, and the stabs/cuts come from all angles. A knife is a "touch" contact weapon and doesn't require much in the way of strength to do real damage. An average person can close with a knife and make contact from a distance of 21 feet faster than most people can draw a handgun and fire one shot with anything like accuracy. That's why nation wide most Police Departments have increased the "safe distance" to 30 feet regarding a knife wielder. Old School: "Attack a gun, run from a knife."
I met a guy once in Dallas who got stabbed and slashed 14 times. He had left his job late at Starbucks and was biking home and got attacked. He showed me the scars. Never give up.
Brian Ebersole was my wrestling coach. H2H who taught you that turn and run collar tie escape? Try moving forwards and shooting your arm thru, or punching it thru at 45 degree angle, jus sayin....great vid, good breakdown
Havent you ever " trained" aikido?? They do a telegraphed lunge deliberately missing by about a shoulder width off to your left...then FREEZE.... then throw themselves helplessly to the ground
I was stabbed 1 out of 2 knife attacks working night club and mosh pit security for 12 years. Thank you for not teaching another static "knife disarm."
I've watched a few Hard2Hurt videos....yeah, I'm subbing. The content is great, the delivery is funny but gives information in a way that resonates. Great work!
I cant remember if it was ye or not but someone did a video about this before where one guy had a knife and attacked a second guy who obviously had protection on like pads etc and he had to defend himself. It showed the best thing to do to take the least amount of damage was to actually target the shoulder of the knife bearing arm. Even just a slight push on it threw off the trajectory of the knife and even what the attacker landed with the knife it was no where near as damaging
Knowing how to take anything is all you can do practice taking a stick away from your friend and decrease the size of the weapon each time there is a catch all method but it’s better if you learn it yourself
Question: what if the guy turns his weapon hand's wrist around (and cuts your wrist) once you grab it with a one on one or two on one? Something my friend taught me is that the guy can rotate his wrists around... I'm sorry for the stupid questions, it's just something that legitimately concerns me!

13 years ago i got into a confrontation with 2 guys, warned them im not the right choice, one went to pull i knife from his front waste band, trapped his hand to his belly with my left hand and fed him his teeth with my right, he dropped to his back, quick knee mount fed him 2 or 3 more, i got up gave his companion a couple, the other staggered to his feet so i dumped the second guy in a bush, gave the first guy a few more while matey climbed out of the bush, so the first guy also went bush diving, the second got some more, the first climbed out of the bush, they both ran off with me chasing, couldnt catch them tho, id had a beer or 3..thats when the shakes hit due to adrenalin.. gave myself a quick triage, found a scrape on my right ear and my knuckles hurt.. could of been far worse.. be the aggressor people, be the aggressor.. weapon gives the average joe false confidence.
"I can't let you get close" is probably rule number one. If they don't get close they can't grab you.
Damn this is good stuff. Glad I found this channel. We always teach in Classic Krav Maga here that you either do one thing right of many things half assed. That's why it's always block, then action. Never block and action the same time. Always better to give your 100% on one thing and then switch to another.
That opening laugh, and HI! from Aaron set the tone for the whole vid
after learning good stuff practice thousands of times from now on daily and always breathe. it's coming back to me a little.
Single most overlooked elements, instinctive reactions or (startle response) and practice!!!
Don't get grabbed :) & don't be shy with the kicks. Especially low fast kicks to groin and knees.
Trick question. You need to track the knife and disengage the grapple. Both are equal threats.
4:30 the slickest thumb/wrist jam to right hook. Didn't even see it coming. Great stuff
Man, the shenanigans in this video make me miss my time at the dojo! 😭😭😭😭 Thanks for the nostalgia! I work 2nds at the moment so I don't get to attend classes.
One of the best practical knife defense strategies I have seen in decades.
This is a good video. Over on ASP there was a video in Dubai I believe where a guy got ruthlessly and horrifically stabbed to death after a road rage incident and couldn’t break the grab hand.
Really great quote I heard somewhere, hmm, wonder where it could've been. "You don't rise to the occasion, you fall to your training."
Great work. Really love this channels approach to martial arts and self-defence
I saw More poke Curly in the eyes in a similar situation! Worked really well!
Have to be careful with running away though because the chance they can catch up with you can be relatively high and now I'm fighting someone while I have a shortness of breath
That thump when he put your head to the floor was priceless. Shows the power of surprise 🤣🤣
LOL! That snap down towards the end was awesome. Icy Mike totally bit on that.
Aaron is good people. I need to get to one of his seminars
He is a very good dude.
You Guys are both super cool, I got a vibe like you 2 know eachother for ages
I watch a lot of Eli. Surprised I don't know Aaron. Grateful he's here in this video though. Good stuff folks!
The last bit is hilarious. I'm so glad that I stayed till the end!😁
This is the best I've seen versus the grab and stab.
Best video I have seen on defence to the sewing machine attack
If an assailant is attacking you with a knife I think most people would freeze or panic including me, I was always told in a life threatening situation go for the eyes and throat hard and expect to get hurt, but easier said than done scary stuff.
Thank you guys! I'm planning a trip to the UK next week and this was really helpful.
The arm with the knife is ALWAYS TOP PRIORITY. Because that arm could kill you in a second.
Anyone any thoughts on this?
yeah a kimura trap would probably be ideal tbh
It's strong. It has it's own set of pros and cons. Some people are really good at it... some people struggle.
So funny and educational. I rewatch this one. Need some people to train with though.
Nice toss and Catch of that training knife 🔪! Toss by the handle then caught by the handle same hand ✋.
This is literally the best knife defense I've seen. Very Practic-able!
If you rotate your right shoulder to grab behind the elbow with your right hand to prevent multiple stabs while using your left arm to trap or redirect the blade offline, you can defeat the grab and get into a position to destroy the arm holding the knife.
The content just gets better and better while always introducing new faces that knows their stuff.
Awesome! And when you've fully grasped that magic, you're called Magic Mike.
Good comment. In the real world all kinds of shite can happen.
Y'all are having way too much fun
cool stuff, try throwing your right arm over the grab but instead of going for a grab break, go straight for the 2 on 1. It moves you off-line and gives you an angled attack to the knife arm.
Best explanation I heard till now and I heard many!
8:23 you guys are hilarious! Great, informative video, as always!
A hatakikomi! Never knew my bit of sumo wrestling would come in handy one day.
Excellent video! Great practical info! Although hopefully never have to use it! Thanks
You two are so funny together. Can this guy be a regular guest on your channel?
Just as important as controlling the knife is a punch in the face. Disrupt decision making, he might even drop the knife if you hit him hard enough.
I was stabbed 1 out of 2 knife attacks working night club and mosh pit security for 12 years. Thank you for not teaching another static "knife disarm."
Yep. Always go for the tool. Take the tool from the tool using it and try to not get fukd up. Respect.
That's not what we said at all.
"You give me your goodies, Mister..."
I'm dead 🤣🤣🤣
Knowing how to take anything is all you can do practice taking a stick away from your friend and decrease the size of the weapon each time there is a catch all method but it’s better if you learn it yourself
Question: what if the guy turns his weapon hand's wrist around (and cuts your wrist) once you grab it with a one on one or two on one? Something my friend taught me is that the guy can rotate his wrists around...
I'm sorry for the stupid questions, it's just something that legitimately concerns me!
It is so funny to see Mike gesticulating with the knife in his hand so casually like it’s a pen 😂😂
Excellent pointeres!
Today's shocking revelation is that having a knife is a pretty big advantage over an unarmed opponent.
Tomorrow we are going to blow the lid off "fighting is hard"
I love watching the facial expressions and the but what if I do this ? ..... Or this ? Awsome break downs on great information
