Extra plus! Use wrapping paper with grid marks on the back, which allows you to measure inches. Then you can adjust waist measurement, length, etc., to be sure it's accurate. (Each grid box is 1 inch wide!) :)
I don’t sew (yet), but make a lot of patterns for customs and wrapping paper with grids is awesome! Super cheap, too. I used to use poster board, but this is so much better.
I inherited a lot of 3x t-shirts when my brother passed away. And they've got cool graphics on them. So I'm thinking of piecing them together to make a maxi t-shirt dress. Maybe tiered .
When I was a kid, my mom used newspaper to make patterns from clothes we had. These days, I have some of her old, unneeded gift wrap, so your way is a great update to an older idea that brings my mom back to me. Thanks!
One of my favorite online retailers sells a long version of this dress for around $30 to 40 dollars. You've just saved me a bundle of money! Thank you. Great instructional video!
I love how you did your video. I dislike watching videos that show every stitch. I fast forward through those. Like the use of wrapping paper for a pattern, large washers for weights, and just your video in general. Good job!
This is brilliant. Your methods taught me something even after sewing for 40 years. Using the gaskets as pattern weights is fabulous and using wrapping paper for the pattern pieces is another smart move. Thanks so much for this.
Beautiful! I've been wanting to find a dress in which the sleeves don't have to be attached separately. I've never sown any clothes for myself before but I really want to try. This is so helpful, thanks!
That has to be the quickest and easiest way of doing a dress love it plus love the idea of using wrapping paper for pattern def inspired me to get back into making clothes again thank you xx
Glad to have a practical use for wrapping paper. I bought to much in the After Christmas sales. Then my boyfriend came with a whole lot of wrapping paper when he was cleaning out a house after someone moved out. Then my brother passed away and I discovered he had quite a hoard of wrapping paper as well.
oh my goodness I love everything about this!!!! you just made my dress making dreams come true! i've been wanting a simple dress pattern for my girls and this is it. I've never seen sleeves done this way.!
🌸 I also use grid wrapping paper for my pattern drafting too. It is a lot more cost effective than drafting paper. 🌸 Very cute dress, thanks for sharing! 🌸
When you cut the fabric at first I thought it was short ..but at the end it looked long ....the t-shirt was bigger? Cause I was wondering if u had catered for seam allowance in the pattern ...
Yes! The t-shirt was very oversized. Here's a link to me holding the t-shirt, while also holding the pattern made in the video, and the dress made in the video. karametta.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_3905.jpg
So I have an art final due soon, and im sewing a dress. But Ms. Rona is a lovely lady and now I cant borrow my friend's machine, so I have to hand sew. YAY!
I love this! I have arthritis in my hands, but this looks like something I can handle. You didn’t mention how we calculate the amount of fabric needed. For me, that’s important. Thank you
i belive she traced a t-shirt for the top, and guessed at the bottem... I think you use a t-shirt your size and trace to the bottem, then procced to make the skirt part as she explained in the vid. I'm new to sewing so don't take my word for it. but might be worth trying. Hope this helped you out!
soak a few whole lemons in a med to large sized jar of methylated spirits for 2weeks minimum, making sure the lemons are covered. Use the resulting liquid to rub about half a teaspoon all over your hands 2-3x/day, for arthritis pain. I have rheumatoid, and it really works. Just leave the lemons in the jar. I pour some of the metho into a smaller jar for daily use. Something in the lemon is anti-inflammatory. Louise, Australia 🦘
Beautiful. Since the pandemic started I have been going through my fabric stash to make face masks and I have found some beautiful stretch fabric. I think I'll make a dress for my daughter. Thank you!
Such a great tutorial and dress choice! please keep making more content like this! absolute godsend to us beginners new to the daunting world of pattern sewing!
Yeeeesss! Girl you rock!! I gotta try this. And I was worried about buying some crafting paper or finding pattern paper..never thought of Christmas wrapping paper. VERY, VERY ,VERY CLEVER!!! Thanks for sharing.
Hi! I’m new to your channel and I really like the simplicity of this dress. I think it’s a good one for my granddaughter to make. She already has basic sewing skills and some knowledge of pattern making. She has also had her own machine she got several years ago. I’m trying to encourage her to use it more so this would be a great project. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful fabric. The dress looks so much longer in the screens of you wearing it. This method is how I sewed my first practice top. It looks nice on you. Thanks for sharing.
True! That's because of lens distortion from how I tangled my camera. Here's the dress from the video, next to the pattern, and t-shirt. karametta.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_3905.jpg
Hello Kara, I've always been into fashion and I love changing buttons on items and decorating clothes with them too but that's as far as my sewing goes. I don't know any formal names (or do they even exist?) for hand stitches but I am extremely neat at hand sewing. I used to love repairing the tears, in my father's old lumbar jack, work shirts and the occasional pant (casual trousers (. I often hemmed curtains, by hand too. It's relaxing to me but I want to make, and alter my own clothes. I'm fed up with wearing what others are wearing. I dabbled in basic knitting as a teen too. I am finally, on the road to crocheting as I've been watching many TH-cam videos and I just ordered a complete kit that has a pattern, 2 skeins of peach yarn, a darning needle and a crochet hook too. I want to make clothes and shows mostly, for myself! I'd love to make gifts and home decor and items like blankets. I only just discovered gang and arm crocheting too!! Can you please advise me on where to start my sewing journey? All my endeavours (don't mention THE car driving FIASCO (there are others abs all have lost me thousands that, I could really not afford) and 21 private, DRIVING lessons - I'm still too nervous to drive, my brother's teased me at 30 years old as, I "still could not drive, unlike the 16 year old American kids!") At least, your initial costs with crochet are minimal. I don't want to buy a fancy sewing machine, only to lose interest and it going to waste. Is there any type of mini or starters machine that is suitable for me, please? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you looked at thrift stores or garage sales? You could also talk to your friends. It wouldn't surprise me if one of them had a sewing machine gathering dust in their basement.
Thanks. All the sewing I've done, I've never made anything with Stretch Knits! I really liked this and I plan on making a dress for myself this next week. Thanks so much for making such an amazing video! You gained a subscriber!!!
I have been using wrapping paper for templates for years, works great...I'm so gonna have to make this dress, I was just saying I want to make some TShirt dresses, I Love them. Thank you for an easy tut....
Very well done video and reassuring explanation! You are terrific, I hope you make lots more videos. I am now going to be watching all you put out there. Keep up the great work
Love the dress, so easy and quick, will be making one soon, Christmas paper is a great idea, will be using that too. Thank you and I look forward to your other tutorials.
Using Christmas wrap as a pattern paper is the most ingenious thing I have ever seen!
I have noticed that the Dollar Tree wrapping paper had the grid on the reverse side.
I agree. I have been looking for grid paper to make my patterns and wrapping paper NEVER crossed my mind.
Elegia I have used tracing paper in my printer before with no problem. It’s see through and thin so it’s easy pin and cut out.
I line my underwear drawer with left over wrapping paper😅
No.... using newspaper is.
!! It NEVER would've occurred to me to use wrapping paper for a pattern! This is life-changing!
I used newspappers before and it worked
I have been using wallpaper, gift wrap, brown bags, butcher paper over the years.
Extra plus! Use wrapping paper with grid marks on the back, which allows you to measure inches. Then you can adjust waist measurement, length, etc., to be sure it's accurate. (Each grid box is 1 inch wide!) :)

That sounds awesome and will be very special
I love videos that pitch straight into the info without too much chat. This is a very clear and informative video - thanks.
Brilliant!!! I have got to stop over thinking when I am trying to make my own dresses xxx
We are in self isolation during this time and I think that this dress is easy enough to teach my daughter to make. Thank you 🙏 Stay safe.
“You can do it. Just believe in yourself” 😂👏👏😘
I love how you did your video. I dislike watching videos that show every stitch. I fast forward through those. Like the use of wrapping paper for a pattern, large washers for weights, and just your video in general. Good job!
Love the dress!!! Hope it is as easy to make as it looks!!
This is brilliant. Your methods taught me something even after sewing for 40 years. Using the gaskets as pattern weights is fabulous and using wrapping paper for the pattern pieces is another smart move. Thanks so much for this.
Thank you! This looks like a good way to ease into knits.
Also, seems like it would be extremely easy to add the ever-coveted POCKETS!
Beautiful! I've been wanting to find a dress in which the sleeves don't have to be attached separately. I've never sown any clothes for myself before but I really want to try. This is so helpful, thanks!
@SLAVIK ...
That's exactly the reason why I'm here 😂😂
I want to try to start sewing matching dresses and skirts for me and my daughter. So glad I found your channel!

Best dress pattern I’ve ever seen. It’s so easy anyone can follow. Thanks for sharing
Wow, so easy. I've made dresses similar. They are super easy and so comfortable! Add trim, buttons, etc. for a dressier look.

Hi, looking to use this method as a quick dress fir my 3yr old granddaughter. Did you make for your daughters, or are they adult?
Thank you. I'm a beginner, and this was the easiest sewing video to understand. I'm confident I can do this. Thank you😊
Thanks for showing this. Clear instructions and so much easier than usual patterns.
Thank you, Rosemary!
🌸 I also use grid wrapping paper for my pattern drafting too. It is a lot more cost effective than drafting paper. 🌸

Very nice. Comfy jersey dresses are just the best in summer. And they transition nicely into autumn with boots ans a cardigan 🙂
