KC native here. I loved this video for giving KC some love (BTW, Joe's was the only place you went that was in KANSAS... the others were in Missouri), but for anyone to judge "KC style" BBQ, you've got to start with the two granddaddies of the local scene: Arthur Bryant's and Gates & Sons. Next, another longtime local heavy-hitter is Fiorella's Jack Stack (formerly Smoke Stack). After those Big Three, there are many, many small stalwart mom-and-pop's as well as shiny newcomers and chef-inspired boutique BBQ joints. Everyone in town has THEIR favorite that they say is THE best. Slap's is definitely a good one among the newcomers, and Joe's KC (it will still always be Oklahoma Joe's to me...) is surely a local biggie as well. Many of these places (including Joe's) were prize-winning competition BBQ teams that decided to go into business. I'm 55, and I'm still finding BBQ places that I didn't know about! (For the record: Gate's is my personal favorite.)

My personal favorite will always be the Carolina Low Country BBQ (pork hash served with rice, gold sauce, and sweet tea), but I'm biased since that's what I grew up with. I've lived in KC for the past 26 years and even as much as I love that Carolina BBQ, you're never going to see me complain about good KC BBQ. Memphis, Texas, Bama, KC - they're all great... the only BBQ that I've ever had that I didn't feel amazed by was the vinegar sauce BBQ you get in the Carolinas outside of the Low Country, it just never clicked for me.
pork is any part of a pig. Ham specifically comes from the rear upper leg, and is put through a process to become ham. Pulled pork is actually short for "pulled pork shoulder" so it's both ends of the pig at once lol
‘I’ll Be the Judge of THAT.’ 😂 The best taglines always have a cheeky inflection. My top three include Texas BBQ, Carolina BBQ (north vinegar and south mustard) and Kansas City BBQ, in that order. I’ve enjoyed watching the two of you interact with each other and the viewers on your vids. I’m sure that you will find along the way some of the dishes aren’t quite your cup of tea and it’s okay to say so; we all have a different ranking order according to taste. I cringe every time you guys drink black coffee but it’s only because I like mine to taste like a dessert (minimum one cream, two sugars). 😂 Suggestion: If you ever see a Honey Baked Ham Store/Shop during your travels, it’s well worth stopping in for a sandwich or a meal. Outside of Terry Black’s they have the best smoked and roasted turkey and their honey baked ham is a Thanksgiving Day favorite (Loaded mashed potatoes, gourmet mac n cheese, bean casserole, sweet potato souffle, pumpkin spiced or pecan pie). Cracker Barrel also has a really good Thanksgiving Day Plate (battered/fried turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, collard greens, candied yams, cranberry sauce, corn bread, dinner rolls, apple crumble).
Thanks for sharing! the bread rolls (or Barmcakes as we call them in the UK) are kaiser rolls, we will have to look out for the next time we head to the grocery store.
That chair behind you is where the ol man sat every day they are open. He had a passion for food. His daughter took it over when he passed. He opened LC'S In 92, i have been going there since late 90's . When i ate in, I'd enjoy the long conversations talking about everything. I truly miss his presence when i go get food.
In the fall you'll have to come back to Kansas City for The American Royal BBQ competition. It's the largest BBQ competition in the world. This year it will be October 31st through November 3rd.
Okay, Brits! 🤠 Your video made me so hungry that I went to the store and got a pork tenderloin and put it in the slow cooker. It's not barbecue, but if you brown it and add it to the slow cooker with spice, veg broth and onions on high for 6 hours you get a pretty good pulled pork. For the sauce add apple cider vinegar to Head Country BBQ sauce (my husband cowboyed for the creator, Bud Head) with some garlic, apple juice and onion and it's amazing. Great video and I hope that you had a blast making it. ❤❤
Thank you for your kind words! and pork tenderloin in the slow cooker sounds delicious!!! We certainly hade fun making this one! Thank you for watching again!
@@thebritstry Thank you for such a fun video! If you're only in the US for a set amount of time, which recipes do you plan on taking home with you? I think that burnt ends might be on the list. 🤪
Our kids used to live by Joe's so we're partial to them, but really there are dozens of BBQ places in KC that are wonderful in their own ways. Q39 has a good sit-down dining experience.
Thank you for sharing your experience and recommendations. It's always nice to hear other people opinions on BBQ places in KC! Q39 was a great setting for a meal!
As y'all travel throughout America tasting the local cuisine, I've got 2 questions... 1) What has been your favorite meal or food so far... 2) Is there any particular food from England you miss having? Enjoying my own dinner as I'm watching your video so it's like we're having a meal together....Love your videos, really enjoy the energy the 2 of you have together, and Nicola....you're still adorable as always. Take care and God bless...
Just so you know, when you were talking about the Wizard of Oz and Kansas, you were actually in Missouri. LC’s is not far from me on the Missouri side. At Joe’s you were in Kansas and I think you were at the Q39 on the Missouri side. It’s all very confusing unless you’re from here.😁
Yes it is. To clarify for everybody, there is a Kansas City, Missouri and a Kansas City, Kansas. They're about 20-25 mins away from each other on the interstate, but we share a culture.
@@pestilentfellow3609no there's only one Kansas City the other one is an imitation that was created much later the city of Kansas City out dates anything in the area including the state of Kansas. Kansas City then Kansas territory then Kansas State that's the historical order. It's like saying there's a Pittsburgh Kansas and comparing it to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania KCK is a weak imitation
The sauce is sweet because the base of most KC BBQ sauce is typically tomato and molasses often with brown sugar and apple cider vinegar, then you mix in spices to taste. So all of KC signature sauces will taste a bit different, but almost all of them will have a sweet base.
Welcome to the Midwest. There is great bbq in Kansas. However, your opening shots of the city are in Missouri. Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri share a border but are 2 different states. Confusing for visitors sometimes I know.
Best burnt ends on the planet and the ambience (dirty, sticky floors, and smoke everywhere) are what makes BBQ such an incredible experience.....They also give you huge portions of burnt ends (try the pork burnt ends)....and seeing the open smoker that looks ancient is so amazing...it's more appealing than any of the Michelin star restaurants!
We made it to Joe's for the first time about a year ago and we are glad we did. So many great places to eat in KC. We don't go to KC often, once every couple years, but the food is something to get excited about when you go.
I moved to Kansas City a little more than a year ago. My wife and I love it! There are so many BBQ places to try that we are given the nickname the BBQ Capital of the World. Every year the biggest BBQ competition comes here called the American Royal. My personal favorite is Arthur Bryants. I love it so much that I have taken up the hobby of smoking meats myself.
Once again, my mouth is watering like crazy. I love BBQ. My Dad used to smoke all the time. My grandfather used to own a BBQ place in Louisiana. Yall are becoming quite the experts on America's food. Another great video. Thank you!
The Joe's KC BBQ gas station where they ate at is about 5 minutes from where I live. Sometimes, if I have had a really long day at work, I will use the app on my phone to order some food for pickup, the longest I have ever had to wait was maybe 5 minutes, and then drive home. Words can not describe how awesome it is especially after a long day.
I love how you communicate by just looking at each other. So in tune with each other. Good relationship. ❤This looked absolutely delicious. My husband's family lives in KC, and I haven't been to near as many BBQ places. I may ask him to take me! I'm glad you both enjoyed it!😊
Thank you so much for your kind words! We really appreciate your support and love sharing our experiences with you all. Kansas was a great experience but just to short! next time we would love to spend more time there!
I hope someday I can try Kansas City BBQ and Texas BBQ. I love brisket and baked beans with brisket. I also love burnt ends too. We have BBQ places in Ohio but I know it’s still nothing like Kansas City or Texas. Possibly even Tennessee, which I’ve never had either.
Hey guys! Thanks so much for coming out to our city and trying a couple of the staples. If you EVER come back, I would love to treat you to a couple of locations like SLAPS, Char Bar for a different vibe (outside area with games and a fire pit), and somewhere else if your heart desires. I am a local photographer published in the NYTimes and other local papers and would love to document this while you're here!
Wow! that would be amazing!!!! we know we only scratched the surface on our short visit and will definitely head back in the future. Send us an email Thebritstry@gmail.com and we can let you know when we are able to plan a trip! Thanks for watching
I moved to KC 18 years ago and that's how I got to know my way around the city - going to all different BBQ restaurants. I'm still finding new spots. ❤
It's amazing that you're still discovering new BBQ spots after all these years! Kansas does have a vibrant food scene; We will definitely be back in the future.
I live in Kansas City and about 2 miles from Joes! Q39 and LCs are such different eating experiences. Wish you guys got to come here while a Chiefs game was going on, you would have loved it.
Here in Kansas City, it's all about the sauce. Do you like a lot, a little, or none. Then it's about the taste of the sauce whether it's sweet, spicy, vinegar, etc. When the BBQ is done right, you can choose whether or not to have sauce. A second thing of KC BBQ is burnt ends as you tried. I would say the best burnt ends in KC are at Meat Mitch. If you come back, I would suggest a burnt ends tour! Thanks for coming to our city and sharing your experiences! You're making me hungry just watching!
Hope you enjoyed KC and our bbq. We get pretty serious about it at times, lol. The real shame is when you go to bbq outside of the big cities known for it. All bbq is good, but when it's in Texas or KC or the like, it's just a level above the rest. Hopefully you got to get around the city (both sides) and have some fun. It really is a great city. The good news is when y'all come back there are only about 300 other places to try, lol. Cheers.
we loved our visit to Kansas, unfortunately it was just too short! Next time we need to stay longer! we do have another video to upload soon! Thank you for watching
It's great to see someone not just talking about Texas barbeque all the time. As someone who has been all over and who is old, I can tell you that America has a good amount of various excellent regional barbeque styles, with different sauces and emphasizing different meats. Kansas City BBQ is one of the best, and is probably one of the most underrated. There is also excellent Chicago BBQ (where I am from, which primarily uses ribs instead of brisket); South Carolina (which features pulled pork and a mustard based sauce); North Carolina (which features pulled pork with a vinegar based sauce); and Saint Louis BBQ, which also features ribs. I suggest that the next time you are in any of these places (especially Chicago), that you try each of their different excellent BBQ styles.
So, I hope you're getting the followers to afford the travels. Get back to Texas, get to Goldees........get everything but make sure you get the pork belly and get the hash or casserole whatever they call it I forget, you wont be upset about it. Love the channel. You guys are amazing I enjoy seeing how your travels go. We love to feed our cousins. I cant wait to get back to the UK for a visit, I love it there.
Kansas City, Missouri might be the most under-rated city in the US. IMHO, you need to go to more than 3 places to really get to know KC bbq. Plus, so much great jazz/music. Hope this is your first of many visits.
Absolutely! Kansas City has so much to offer beyond just BBQ and jazz. It's definitely a hidden gem in the US. we just wish we had more time on our trip! We have another video from KC to upload soon!
Baked beans were invented by Native Americans in the New England region of the United states. They are sweet because I believe they used molasses or maple syrup in their recipes. Heinz beans that you get in England is an American company from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. 🇺🇸🙏🏻👍🏻
Hey! KC resident and Joe's fan here! The Z-Man is one of the best. KC has an enormous local BBQ following. So many good places. Looking forward to seeing other places along your journey!
Welcome to KCBS BBQ style. I'm a KCBS Master Judge and I've been enjoying the products for 20 years in competition. Looks like these restaurants have been producing an excellent product. Nothing beats judging a contest where the meat has been timed to be of optimum taste and temperature for the judges. Glad you got to visit and taste outstanding BBQ.
Your comment made our day. It's amazing to connect with BBQ enthusiasts and people have real experience in the preparation and judging of amazing foods! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and thank you for watching!
I agree with you @gregorydavis. The flavor should be there with no sauce needed. But for pulled pork, you need a little tangy bbq sauce to go with the sweet flavor of the pork..
Right. That's probably why it's so difficult to find a Texas bbq joint that even has any sauce. Oh, every bbq place in Texas.has their own sauce? Weird.🙄
Texas people get so but hurt when people enjoy other bbq. If you paid attention you can hear how they talk about how good the meat is. The sauce is just some extra goodness on top because we're great at making sauces too. Just because mashed potatoes taste good don't mean you have to skip the gravy.
So true! we had a great time an have just uploaded another video on Kansas food spots, we just wish we had more time there.. th-cam.com/video/8clxTGkUPZw/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for being a long-time viewer! We had an amazing time in KC and loved exploring the local culture. Let us know if there is anything else we should try next time.
KC native here! I'm always happy to see folks from out of town roll in to try our BBQ. There's some good places off the beaten path. About a half hour south of Kansas City off of I-35 at 87th Street is Zarda's Barbacue. They have 'limited reserve' ribs on Mondays that are damn tasty. Their baked beans are really popular. If you like cauliflower, they have fried cauliflower which is one of my mom's favorite sides. That place is a staple from my childhood.
Fantastic, I'm happy to see you hit two out of the three I recommended. Truth is there are so many good BBQ joints it's hard to go wrong at most of them. I hope you enjoyed your stay in KC.
Kansas Citian here. How long did you stand in line at Joe's? If you ever do come back, two places you need to hit up are Gates BBQ and the criminally underrated Rosedale BBQ.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll be sure to check out Gates BBQ and Rosedale BBQ next time I'm in town. We were very lucky at all the places and didn't have to wait at all!
We are glad you enjoyed Q39 and the beauty of Kansas City! We loved it and just wish we had more time there. We have more videos to come form our trip. watch this space
Friendly reminder that much of the time you were actually in Kansas City, MO. The opening shots of the downtown skyline, the international airport you likely arrived in, the sports teams, entertainment, are all in KCMO. Joe’s is in a suburb on the Kansas side though.
Vid makes me proud to live right here in KC(MO). BBQ So good, so many styles, from Gates, to Joe's, to Q39, and the small folks, never a lack of great BBQ no matter who your favorite is.
The best Bbq here in KC; LCs is a hidden gem….. but you truly missed out not visiting Gates bbq. Glad you enjoyed! Hope you felt so welcome and spread the word!
I have tried all types of BBQ in my travels..KC,Carolina(both types)Memphis…they are all delicious and all have their strong points…My favorite will of course be Texas but I will admit I am biased for my states beef brisket…glad to see you enjoying all of the different types we have! Enjoy!!!
the red or pink ring on the meat you keep mentioning is called the smoke ring the deeper into the meat it goes the deeper the smoke has been imbued into the meat. One of your trips you need to go to the Hutchinson underground salt museum. You will enjoy stuff from Wizard of Oz SuperMan and MUCH more.
Now you have to go try St. Louis and Memphis and the Carolinas. That’s what’s great about BBQ. It’s all different but all amazing. And try the hole in the wall places too. Our son brings us St. Louis style ribs from this little place he knows and they are so good. You’ve made me want to go get some BBQ now. 😂
Kansas City in the house!! 😂😂 We have so many delicious places we have to rotate them out! Everyone always forgets KC when I see these videos, I'm so happy!! Now we are having BBQ for dinner 😂😂❤
Love you guys. First video I've watched of yours. Kansas City born and raised. Still live here. I have traveled the US and tried BBQ all over, and I whole heartedly believe KC has the best BBQ in the country. Maybe my taste buds are biased though. LCs is honestly probably my favorite. Glad you guys got to experience it. Also, Joes BBQ at the gas station is the only one that was in Kansas. The other 2 were in Missouri. There is a Kansas City, Kansas and a Kansas City Missouri. Just a bit of geographical knowledge for ya.. Also, the look out where you finished your video is one of my favorite spots in the city. Look forwards to watching more

The chemistry between the two of you is delightfully funny and sweet. Fantastic video as always! ❤
Suggestion: If you ever see a Honey Baked Ham Store/Shop during your travels, it’s well worth stopping in for a sandwich or a meal.
The bread roll here is called a Kaiser for the German bakeries who originally made them
Thanks for sharing! the bread rolls (or Barmcakes as we call them in the UK) are kaiser rolls, we will have to look out for the next time we head to the grocery store.
That's an amazing story! LC'S was a great experience, There was a table and chair still with his name on!
Actually LC's opened up in '86
It warms the ♥️ seeing the progress on accepting flavors, sauces, and combining things. The Earl of Sandwich would be proud of your growth
If you ever come back, try Buck Tui BBQ. It's a Thai-BBQ fusion restaurant, and the food is incredible. The Brisket Phad Thai is one of my favorites.
Thanks for the recommendation! The Brisket Phad Thai sounds amazing-we’ll definitely add it to my food bucket list for my next visit!
In the fall you'll have to come back to Kansas City for The American Royal BBQ competition. It's the largest BBQ competition in the world. This year it will be October 31st through November 3rd.
I was at the very first one. Remember it like it was yesterday.
Oh please do a reaction video of Andrew watching the Wizard of Oz! Great video today - you two are a joy to watch!
Agreed! That would be so good.
LC's brisket sandwich on white bread with sweet potato fries can not be improved. Heaven.
That sounds like a great meal!! LC'S was a great experience
Sweet potato fries are amazing! My mom made some great ones!!!
Hope you both had an amazing time in KC. You picked some great spots. I hope that KC hospitality was in full force ☺️
The hospitality was amazing! we had a great time and will definitely come back in the future! Thank you for watching
"it's cheesy but not over cheesy" just like Nicola 😂
3 WOWS on the sandwich says it all ✌🏻❤️
It was really good! Thanks for watching!
It is very entertaining to see the two of you enjoy a meal together.
Thank you for watching
You guys are such a fantastic couple. I wonder how you met? Any thoughts on a Live Q&A?
Best BBQ I’ve ever had was At Memphis Barbecue in Memphis! ❤
Thanks for the advice! We would love to visit Memphis in the future
Just drive down state line rd
@@pestilentfellow3609no there's only one Kansas City the other one is an imitation that was created much later the city of Kansas City out dates anything in the area including the state of Kansas. Kansas City then Kansas territory then Kansas State that's the historical order. It's like saying there's a Pittsburgh Kansas and comparing it to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania KCK is a weak imitation

That's a travesty. My first thought of KC is always Arthur Bryant's.
Thank you for the recommendation! LC's was a great choice but next time we will look up Arthur Bryants
Thank you for the recommendation! LC's was a great choice but next time we will look up Arthur Bryants
The sauce is sweet because the base of most KC BBQ sauce is typically tomato and molasses often with brown sugar and apple cider vinegar, then you mix in spices to taste. So all of KC signature sauces will taste a bit different, but almost all of them will have a sweet base.
Thanks for sharing that insight about KC BBQ sauce! Thanks for watching
👍 If it doesn't have molasses, it isn't KC BBQ sauce. There's something magical about it. ❤️
Love that you found LC’s. That’s generally one of the spots only locals know about, but it’s one of the best.
Welcome to the Midwest. There is great bbq in Kansas. However, your opening shots of the city are in Missouri. Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri share a border but are 2 different states. Confusing for visitors sometimes I know.
Joes is in ks though
@@jacetoon9473
Fk Joe's. Fake Oklahoma crap
I was gonna say the same..... Missouri girl here and it looked like home to me😊
@@jacetoon9473 Ate joe's twice, threw up twice.
Those were in Missouri. The did miss a few spots
LCs is where anyone is welcome doesn't matter where you come from. my personal favorite in KC.
LC'S was an amazing experience! The quality of the bbq was a bonus
You should have a shirt that reads, “I’ll Be The Judge Of That.” And your logo on there too.
Lol! Great idea! Thanks for watching!
We made it to Joe's for the first time about a year ago and we are glad we did. So many great places to eat in KC. We don't go to KC often, once every couple years, but the food is something to get excited about when you go.
Joe's is my favorite. Yes, we Kansans love our sauce, but we do still season the meat and of course slow cook it.
Joe's is definitely a classic choice! Kansans sure know their barbecue. Thanks for watching
I recognized the "hidden gem" by the smoker 😂 LC's is my favorite place personally, really good food at comparatively affordable prices for BBQ.
Thank you for sharing your positive experience with LC's! We loved it too! Thanks for watching
Once again, my mouth is watering like crazy. I love BBQ. My Dad used to smoke all the time. My grandfather used to own a BBQ place in Louisiana. Yall are becoming quite the experts on America's food. Another great video. Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words! it must have been great having homemade bbq all the time! Thanks for watching!
@thebritstry Yes it was wonderful. Thanks again!
Jacks Stack has some of the best KC has to offer!
Thank you for the recommendation! Jack Stack is now at the top of my foodie list for next time we visit.
@@thebritstry Come back soon and visit KC again. We love having great people like you come to our city.
We are so jealous!!!! fortunately we only waited 5 mins for such a special meal!! Thanks for watching
❤ Finally The Brits Try KC BBQ ❤
Thank you for watching! we had a great time in KC
@@thebritstry you're welcome. 😀 I completely understand , it's a big area to cover! On the upside, there is plenty more to explore!
Thanks for watching! We hope you get a chance to try the legendary BBQ in the future, let us know if there is anywhere in Ohio we should visit?
@@thebritstry I will have to get back with you on that.
Hey guys! Thanks so much for coming out to our city and trying a couple of the staples. If you EVER come back, I would love to treat you to a couple of locations like SLAPS, Char Bar for a different vibe (outside area with games and a fire pit), and somewhere else if your heart desires.
That sounds like an amazing experience! we would love to try that in the future!
Second that! Nothing quite like the amazing smell of the parking lot at Arrowhead!
Thank you for the warm welcome and BBQ suggestions! Meat Mitch sounds like a must-visit for burnt ends next time we are in town. Thanks for watching
Thank you for recommending the different types of bbq. We can’t wait to try them.
Finally you guys get to enjoy the best BBQ in the world!
Those Texans, Memphians, and Carolinians want to have a talk with you. 😂

I work in Kansas City and it’s really cool that you both made it to KC. Glad you enjoyed the BBQ. Hopefully if you come back you can try more places.
So glad you went to LC’s. That place is one of my favorites ever. It is a hidden gem.
Baked beans were invented by Native Americans in the New England region of the United states. They are sweet because I believe they used molasses or maple syrup in their recipes. Heinz beans that you get in England is an American company from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. 🇺🇸🙏🏻👍🏻
Thank you for sharing! they definitely have a sweet delicious flavor in the USA. Thank you for watching

We here in Texas don't need BBQ sauce on our BBQ all the flavor is in the meat
We have also tried Texas BBQ, Which is your favorite?
I think two things are true at once. Both that the best BBQ doesn't need sauce, and that KC does have some decent BBQ sauces.
LC's is literally the absolute best!!! I was so relieved when that was your 3rd place :) LC's is perfection on bread!
Welcome to Kansas City!! There are SO MANY great BBQ AND non-BBQ restaurants here in town! It’s truly a foodie’s paradise!!

Thanks for sharing your favorite spot! we'll definitely check out Zarda's Barbecue next time we are in the area.
Harp BBQ is popping off too. That place has some of the most phenomenal BBQ I've ever had. So phreaking good.
We will have to try it when we go back, thanks for the recommendation. 😀
Fantastic, I'm happy to see you hit two out of the three I recommended. Truth is there are so many good BBQ joints it's hard to go wrong at most of them. I hope you enjoyed your stay in KC.
