PROCOL HARUM: CONQUISTADOR, WITH THE EDMONTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, EDMONTON CANADA, 29 / 30 MAY 1992

  • In grateful memory to Gary Brooker (1945-2022)
Procol Harum performing the "REUNION" concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Greenwood Singers at the Jubilee Auditorium 29/30 May 1992
    Line up:
    Gary Brooker- voc, piano
    Don Snow- org
    Mark Brzezicki- dr
    Geoff Whitehorn- guit
    Dave Bronze- bass
    David Hoyt - conductor
"Conquistador" originally was released on Procols first album (1967).
The orchestrated version, taken from the "Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra" LP (1972) was a hit single in many countries.
The 1992 REUNION concert in Edmonton celebrated the 20th anniversary of Procol's most successful album release.
The band performed Conquistador twice: this is part of the regular second set, the euphoric fourth (!) encore will be a separate upload (highly recommended).

      You're very right.
It was my favorite group from the late 60's and beginning 70's.
I had all their records and have seen two times a concert of them.
Ofcourse they were not as famous as some other British groups, but real fans could appreciate them.
With "A whiter shade of pale" they made one of the best songs ever recordered and it will have good memories to many people and is my "all time" favorite song.
May they both rest in peace, Mr. Gary Brooker and Mr. Keith Reid and let us be thankful for all the beautiful songs they made for us.

Sometimes a classic is born out of an original - I grew up on this version and didn’t even know until 3 years ago there was an original without the orchestra.
The orchestra adds so much to this and turned the song into an instant classic hit. I don’t know who scored it, but they NAILED it.

@@lawrencemay8671 If I recall correctly, "Conquistador" originally came out in 1967, and wasn't one of their greatest successes at that time. However, in 1971 or '72, they rerecorded it with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (which really *made* the whole song, in my opinion), and the new version became a huge international hit. Either way, it was a truly epic song that deserved all the airplay it could get!
As for "Nights In White Satin," that was also a great track from this amazingly talented group.😉

Procul Harem was one of a Handfull ( one hand) of British Musical Ensembles populated by the finest Musicians ever to require concentration of thought to participate and create literary value in actual high brow story. Their tales were not for head banging idiots. I was able to borrow the French
Pressing of the first Lp in ? 1966. When one noticed the “ WORDS KEITH REID” on each Cover and how respectfully they always acknowledged this Lyricist. It was something
    they alone choose to do.
This man was a genius capable of elevating an art form of story. When Ringo Starr asked which
song was most definitive of his Bands Generation he stated instantly (A Whiter Shade of Pale) insinuating nothing the Beatles had created was comparable. Gary Brooker participant in the honoring of almost every Musician awarded or passed was so highly respected by his peers he was the unequalled Statesman until his passing. One could write so much about these fellows Mathew Fisher , Robin Trower. A Salty Dog who else could have pulled that one off. God Bless them standing and in Heaven.

Bought this album when it first came out, I think I paid $2.98 for it. Bought it at the original Kohl's store before it turned in to a national chain, would play this over and over on my Panasonic stereo as loud as I could, I'm 68 now, what an amazing album, still have it in my collection
