With Procol Harum it's been a slow burn for me. Whiter Shade of Pale ruled the airwaves in the summer of '67, when I was 13 years old. Later I heard the album A Salty Dog. I thought it was quite good but it's taken me decades to fully appreciate them. The instrumentation of piano, organ, guitar bass and drums is the same as The Band's so there's always been a bit of a connection in my head between those 2 bands. I saw them play one time in the early '70s when Dave Ball was in the band. Acoustic 12-string guitarist Leo Kottke opened the show. That was a classic double bill. Procol Harum had such a warm, full sound and could really rock. BJ Wilson, of course was a master of filling up space, often not playing a beat per se but embellishing the music in a very intelligent way. I love Keith Reid's lyrics and how perfectly the music complemented his poetry. Often the lyrics were dark and morbid, full of gothic horror, cosmic humor, shipwrecks, death and redemption. Gary Brooker's voice. None better IMO.

My all-time Grands of Rock! One of the greatest voices of rock from the originator/composer Gary Brooker; mindbending lyrics from Keith Reid; great and still most modest guitarist Robin Trower; celestial and unique Hammond organ from Matthew Fisher; and last but definitely not least: Barrie J. Wilson - the greatest drummer this band could ever have. Another originator!

The enigmatic lyrics of A Whiter Shade Of Pale are the reason why the song became a masterpiece which will never get old. The cryptic words create beautiful images in our minds which are then enhanced by the soulful music. If the lyrics were nothing special the song would not have been such a smashing success.

@@carlsaganlives5112 - I'd say Procol Harum is up there with The Band in evoking the 19th century depths of their respective cultural backgrounds. With The Band, it's that lost Southern Gothic way of life, while Procol Harum harks upon the gothic solemnity of Britain's cloistered ecclesiastic traditions, filtered through a bluesy beer hall fugue.

WOW! Procol Harum was even better than I gave them credit for! I have loved them since the early 70's, but I totally missed so much of what they were doing musically - I guess I, like most other people, was trying to figure out what on earth the words meant. But now, I'm hearing the music - the atonality, the changes in rhythms and keys, the use of electronic effects, and varying instrumental combinations. Maybe now that they're all gone we can hear the music. I want to cry.

Watching this in 2023 New Year’s Eve is a surreal
    And heartwarming .
Shine on Brightky favorite as got it for cover art and became a fan ever since . Never did see the band but Robin solo career did.
The best and a equal with a Alvin Lee experience .
Influences everything from music to everyday life .

This film must have been made very near the time Procol Harum released what is arguably their best LP, and truly one of the best of the decade, "A Salty Dog" which really is a 'theme/concept' album, imbued with stories, images and references to ships, sailing, the sea, captains, sailors, etc. and yet somehow this director films the band playing darts and walking in the winter snow. There was the great Keith Reid, and yet no worthwhile questions about the lyrics to "A Whiter Shade of Pale" or "A Salty Dog" "The Devil Came from Kansas" etc. There was a snippet of "Boredom" but no discussion of the lyrics, or the novel instrumentation (recorder, xylophone, congas, etc.) This is the closest I have ever gotten to really "see" members of the enigmatic group, but this film could have been much more revealing.

Unbelievable gem, especially liked the accompanying video created for 'The Dead Man's Dream', itself an extraordinary piece and tastefully illustrated by the director here. You can imagine the mess a modern interpretation would involve with cg nonsense and hallowe'en images...yes folks, I am suggesting our culture has gone further and further down the drain when it wasperhaps at its peak in 1970 and PH's 'Home' album.

Thomas De Lello, yes, they were great. However, they may have been hampered rather than helped by their absolute masterpiece "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". That song is so cryptic and so one-of-a-kind that the rest of their work seems to pale in comparison - pun intended!
Oh well, it is probably is not the worst thing to be remembered for one brilliant song which will never pale - even if no one really understands the meaning of the text 😆

@@sabineb.5616 Iconic timeless song but they created other nearly as awesome tunes that, on their own, would have vaulted them into the stratosphere of symphonic rockdom.
