Thanks for the video! I just started a couple years ago. Kinda wish I learned this earlier, I also only use R. The way I do it is Shield > Jump > Angle stick > Unpress and Re-press R during and after jumpsquat. I play Sheik so that's a 3-frame input for a perfect wavedash. Honestly the hardest part learning this was making sure I didnt roll or spotdodge accidentally by pushing the stick early.
This video helped me so much a couple years ago. Not going pro anytime soon, but I’ve ingrained L as my everything button since seeing this and my play style is so much smoother. I barely even roll now, just crisp, satisfying af, wavedash oos from light shielding L. Just wanted to say thank you, great tip 👍
It was an extremely useful thing to know for me. Not only I don't use L in Melee, but indeed I bound L for other purposes in P:M. So now I can keep playing P:M with my settings without making confusion with Melee.
i also only use R and dont use L for anything. something that ive found that is insanely helpful to me, is that if you hold in your trigger buttons while you plug in your controller to the wii / gamecube system, it dissables light shielding on that button. it allows you to wavedash out of shield super easily
If you can obtain full-shield without fully depressing the trigger, would this mean that the optimal way to hard-shield would be to always semi-hold the trigger as opposed to full press in order for the action to no longer eat up potential teching window?
Thx mate, useful to know. However, I find generally this really should only be used in MUCH fewer cases than I suspect people would use it, as Dash=>Wavedash is almost always a better option. (and is not doable while shielding) Also, I use Z instead of A for my aerials. And to anyone else that does, should know that Z works like the 1st iteration of R/L-Slider. Its the best possible lightshield (aka "big shield") and doesn't require you to fidget around with the amount of pressure you apply to a slider. It's incredibly useful I find. I'm too shy and reserved to make a video, but I was always hoping to see one by someone representing the importance of dashing between literally everything. Otherwise people learn all the technical moves in smash and they start to see the "gimmick" side of them, rather than new opportunities. Almost everyone at the local tournaments I have went to, know how to wavedash, then suddenly when you start fighting them, they decide to roll 90% of the time, because they can't dash=>wavedash.
Two alternative methods to this are: (My personal favorite) 1. Hold shield, jump, let go of shield and wavedash on the correct frame. Basically, exactly the same as this method, except you have to move your shield finger a little bit more. But it's actually not slower - just user preference. OR 2. Hold shield with one trigger and wavedash out of it with the other. I can wavedash fine with both buttons, but I found it overly complicated to use both at the same time, and thus they were sloppy and inconsistent. I don't really see any reason for me to ever use the R button to be honest.
dang! this is cool, I'll definitely try it today. I still have trouble timing the WD out of shield due to shield stun and buffering rolls/spot dodge accidentally, but this will solve one of my problems
I use L for everything and naturally started doing something like this. When I shield I still hold it all the way down, but when wavedashing out I lift the trigger just above the "clicking point" and then click it again for the airdodge.
I feel like taking advantage of both triggers maximizes different opportunities, like wavedash --> shield (waveshield) or being able to focus on a specific angle on the main joystick while airdodging with R. It's probably just me, but I feel like more players should use both triggers. But again, like you said, Mew2King only uses R and he's doing better than most everyone else at the game haha. Maybe it's really just preference.
Is your ice climber guide already out, and if not will it be out soon? I would love to see an ice climber guide from a very skilled player because of all the crazy things they can do if played well.
Interesting! My method was to have this be the one time to use the L button. I would shield with R, then flick the c stick up (that makes my character jump) and then wave-dash with the L button while still holding R. Before 3.5 this didn't work with project M and this was frustrating; I wish you made this video earlier.
This seems way more complicated than it needs to be. If you're just starting out, learn to use both bumpers; it makes everything a lot more efficient. Hold down L to shield, then smoothly jump and click in R while releasing L.
Using both is fine. This is for the numerous players who are already accustomed to using one for everything (especially casual players getting into competitive play).
Joshua LaLonde Agreed....if anyone is learning they should just do what they feel comfortable doing....there isn't a rule book on how you "should" start...
Joshua LaLonde "Who normally jumps" implies they already have muscle memories. I recommended that beginners - players who aren't accustomed to a set of controls yet - should learn to play properly, as it makes competitive gameplay more manageable later on. Oryan Semp It's better to be uncomfortable while practicing a correct method than to comfortably practice incorrectly. What you end up doing is building a flawed muscle memory, which is harder to erase, and adds another layer of difficulty to competitive gameplay.
+eidolism I wouldn't say it's flawed, technically the best way to play is with claw grip, but not all of the top players use it, and they're still leagues above many others who do use it. TL:DR although technically it's the optimal way to play it's not the be all end all compared to something like your punish game or recovery
I have told several of my friends who started R-L canceling to try L and they said it feels more comfortable, but even if not for you, it does open your options to use L and R for different things, but what works for you works.
Hi Im using mayflash adapter to play on dolphin and was wondering if you could share with me your dolphin GC controller configuration(the one with threshold, radius etc). Also can you do a video on wavedashing with captain falcon and fox and maybe show your hands?
Only trouble is you can't powershield. One of the best ways around falco lasers is WD OOS, but obviously you want to be able to get powershields when dealing with lasers.
HyperSonic707 no ud still have to click it in from the start, so yes this would prevent "lucky" powershields that you weren't trying for necessarily. But it's also good habit to not click the trigger down when not necessary so you don't have the 20 frame no teching penalty (same reason it's good to L cancel with soft press)
AndrewAJT I gotcha. I usually go for PS and get it maybe 1/10 times. I've just been learning to wavedash with L out of shield. It's not so bad, just awkward at first.
Hey I normally use this method on Gamecube, but can't do it on 20XX/Dolphin. Is there a particular button setup in order to do this? As I half press L for shield, I would have to release L and then click in in order to airdodge
Honestly, if you aren't a spacie main, the 20XX hack pack is probably not a big deal to you, but trust me, as a spacie, it's the only way to be competitive and practice every single day without living in a super active region
So now that you've figured out this technique, do you always use this method to full-shield (pressing it down without clicking), even when you don't intend to WD OOS?
Hunter Yes, its better to do this because you avoid the frame penalty where you can not tech after clicking it down. You do have to click the trigger down to powershield though.
since powershielding is neigh impossible in competitive until the fate of 20xx befalls humanity, should I just use lightshielding (lightly pulling the L or R triggers)?
This isn't a good idea for Yoshi mains, right? Yoshi can only parry with digital shield, since he can't jump cancel the initial shield animation with a lightshield. Just a tidbit.
This was recorded on Dolphin Emulator using Camtasia 8. For things like my Ocarina of Time speedruns on Wii, I use the Dazzle DVD Recorder HD and the CE Compass 4 port splitter.
I know Project M is in the title, but PM doesn't have light-shielding...does this still work if you simply input the same way as you would to light shield? (I guess I could just give it a try but I figured I'd ask)
+SmashBrosPip&Pop I used to use only L naturally being a lefty, but it made it hard for me to wavedash backwards (down left) because of the awkward angle. is that just me?
hey i have a question on something else, when i dash dance my character (marth) often turns around but starts running in place. I know i messed it up but what am I doing wrong?
jake lalala I do this sometimes and I found that when you flick the controller instead of holding it back and forth it's never happening. Hope this helps.
jake lalala What you're doing is holding the control stick in one direction too long. Dash-dancing involves staying in the "dash" animation; that is, the initial animation that comes out when you smash the controller to the side. In Marth's case, you can usually tell when you've come out of this animation, because his legs will start actually moving. If you hold in one direction too long, you'll enter the "run" animation, this forces you to run in place for a short time if you want to turn around.
Can someone explain to me why Melee's shielding is so different compared to any other Smash game? Sometimes I see big shields, sometimes I see small shields, sometimes I see faint shields...why isn't any other Smash game like it? Even when I watch PM I don't see shields like that
Melee was the only game where all players would be guaranteed to use a GCN controller, which is the only Nintendo pad to date that features the analogue shoulder buttons required to light shield as far as I'm aware
never use Z. when you use L or R, it buffers the l-cancels because when the analog trigger is going down it presses every frame. using Z is far less consistent
+Pikachu You are correct, you still need to click the trigger in to PS. You can still use this WD OoS method and powershield by clicking it in when necessary.
I was using lvl 9 Ganondorf with peach to practice this technique you present to us and I can sorta do it correctly but Ganondorf has so much hit stun I usually stay in shield or spot dodge... This is difficult
I don't get this, it's not that hard to just shield > jump > airdodge with one trigger. I never had a problem with it. This seems just overly complicated.
danielvutran Why would you go "faster" with this method, what does that even mean? You jump out of shield and then you airdodge frame 5 or whatever depending on your character to wavedash oos. Why would doing this magic trigger trick make a difference in "speed". And something that is subjective is how hard it is to implement this technique in the first place.
Peanutz996 its easier because this way you don't risk not getting the timing right because of the time you have to use unclicking the L/R and clicking it again and avoid any risk of doing so, if you are already used to unclick L/R and click it again then good for you but for some people it is hard to do it in the right timing
danielvutran Sry, but what a BS comment? You clearly don't understand the physics, If you think what you said is true. Peanutz996 is absolutely right. You can't speed something up, that is already frameperfect. I've been using the "old method" for years and never really had an issue with it, even with characters like Fox/Sheik (3 frames jumpsquat). Also people seem to be forgetting about one thing: I'm pretty sure, that with analog-sheilding alone (ie not clicking) you don't have a chance of getting powersheilds what so ever. So the old method, if you master it, should actually be superior overall.
I didn't know that you couldn't powershield with analog shield. That's cool (if true). And the fact that it's a slightly differen process from a regular wavedash makes you more prone to mess it up, if you don't practise it a lot.
"I've been wave dashing out of shield for years." Idk why I found that so funny

An R press is an R press. You can't say it's only a half.

on a gamecube controller you can press the L and R buttons only slighly. That's what makes you light shield.

good video, even helps slippi newcomers like me
I use L for shield because I use y/x jump buttons to jump and pressing R will hurt my index finger with time
+SmashBrosPip&Pop Try a different controller. I have a white controller that I stopped using with an R button that hurts my finger when none other do.
+SmashBrosPip&Pop I used to use only L naturally being a lefty, but it made it hard for me to wavedash backwards (down left) because of the awkward angle. is that just me?
its still 2 buttons
+Jordan Severns 1 trigger*
Weird, I use L for L cancelling and wavdashing but R for sheilding and rolling.
My method. shield as normal with r, then very slightly release and press again. Its kind of like yours, but reversed. :)
simple, get used to shielding with the trigger opossite to the one u wavedash with, MAGIC
Not as easy
But in Sm4sh and PM, that's the button I jump with on certain characters.

great, that makes sense thanks a lot
why wavedash instead of dodging normally?
Wow I thought you only did RuneScape vids
who uses the L trigger anyways? R trigger master race!
i use the R only for grab xD The L is my R, i guess
just one correction. Yoshi cannot do it. He cannot jump out of shield
You're still pressing R, and jump. Two buttons either way you look at it.

4:15 Yoshi can't tho ;)
can you power shield with this?
You still have to click down the L or R button to powershield or tech
How is your shield not running out at all?
Tooglian Primus 20xx code
R to shield, L to wave dash, Z to L cancel.
never use Z. when you use L or R, it buffers the l-cancels because when the analog trigger is going down it presses every frame. using Z is far less consistent
O maybe that's why I suck.
Wavedashing with the R Button? Are you left-handed???
Does this allow you to powershield?
+Pikachu any time you shield you can power shield, even yoshi
except when light sheilding, but im pretty sure this counts as a full shield
I was under the impression that you can only powershield if you fully press the trigger, but I may have been misinformed.
+Pikachu You are correct, you still need to click the trigger in to PS. You can still use this WD OoS method and powershield by clicking it in when necessary.
you said 1 button but you're jumping (1 button or stick input) and airdodging (L or R). 2 is more than 1.
Is this how m2k does it since he only uses R?
No, he shields by clicking down and reclicks to wavedash. He does the harder and less efficient way, hes just used to it
I was using lvl 9 Ganondorf with peach to practice this technique you present to us and I can sorta do it correctly but Ganondorf has so much hit stun I usually stay in shield or spot dodge... This is difficult
just hold l or r and wave dash with the opposite l or r .
How do you shine out of shield?
marvelakajka While sheilding, you have to jump then immediately shine before leaving the ground.
You know how during multishining, you shine during your jump squat frames? Well you have to do the exact same thing, but OOS.
+xRePullse even if you end up jumping, you could still air dodge down and you should be fine.
thank you. so much

does this work in PM

andrewajt62 Only difference being that analog shoulder input is hard-shield in PM, anyway, so it's even easier to get the hang of.
TurtleShell 720 You can analog full shield in melee which is why this works. But it might require an even softer input in pm
I don't get this, it's not that hard to just shield > jump > airdodge with one trigger. I never had a problem with it. This seems just overly complicated.
lol, it's a matter of speed. you actually go faster with this method, as well as use less force. and that's not subjective either, it's physics....
danielvutran Why would you go "faster" with this method, what does that even mean? You jump out of shield and then you airdodge frame 5 or whatever depending on your character to wavedash oos.
OMG I JUST DID A WAVEDASH ON THE WII U VERSION
Hahahaha no
I did.
Haha yeah
with bidou tech maybe but directional airdodges were removed in brawl and have been removed since
+Brett Hill i know.
wtf, people actually been using both buttons to wavedash out of shield?
3:13 Food ;o
so to sum up, to wavedash with "only one button", you have to press Y, then input the direction, then press R all the way. *thumb down*
Wave shielding
+BronzeCylinder That's wavedashing into shield, but thats a seldom used term
Yoshi cant do this :)
Now, show us how to DACUS 100% of the time as sheik in brawl =}
