Soooo you want your child to imitate words?! You've come to the right place!!
Let me help walk you through the steps of a child developing the imitation skills using a KEY therapy technique - Social Games and Activities!

That comes AFTER a child is able to Stay and PLAY (and ATTEND) to you, toys, objects or books for an appropriate amount of time! Typically 2x's in minutes of their age! (example: 1.5 year olds, = 3 minutes; 2 year olds = 4 minutes)

// Now that your child is READY to imitate, WHERE DO WE START?!
STEP 1) Gross Motor Actions!
-Play TAG!
-Play Stop / Go (modeled in the video)
-Create an obstacle course on the floor using painter tape and race through it!
-Do jumping jacks!

-MAKE IT FUN! • HOW TO WORK ON SPEECH ...
Step 2) Fine Motor Skills
-Play Peek-A-Boo
-If you're happy and you know it clap your hands (make up OTHER little SIGNS to go with this like pointing to your face every time the song says "happy!")
-HIGH FIVE! (FALL DOWN! Be dramatic!!) Over and over again, see if your little one will give EVERYONE a high five in the room!
-AH AH CHOO! Sneeze! (look for your hild to imitate, HELP them move their head to "sneeze" it off!
-Add a BELL!
Step 3) Consistently Model, Use, Show and HELP them (hand under hand) Use GESTURES/ SIGNS/ SPEECH SOUNDS / WORDS
-Use the same gestures over and over again (waving bye, doing a thumbs up, pointing, shaking head yes/no, holding hands out for "where'd it go?!") REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT! *Remember, typically developing toddlers need to hear something and see it up to 50 times before they make the correlation! Therefore, with out little late talking friends, they might need it modeled even TWICE as many times! HANG IN THERE! YOU CAN DO IT!
-Once your child is consistently using FUNCTIONAL signs and/or gestures ( • TEACHING FUNCTIONAL WO... )
THEN start using SPEECH SOUND HAND CUES!

THEN we combine the hand cues and sounds to help them form WORDS!!!!!

Additional Tips: Incorporate SENSORY PLAY and Sensory Integration into your games!
Use play dough! Grab a tunnel and crawl through it! Get up and DANCE! Play in the SAND BOX! Add RUNNING into each routine! Get those little guys MOVING so that they can process information quickly and more efficiently!

Oh my goodness, please don’t stop making these sorts of videos! I feel so discouraged because my son just turned 16 months and isn’t talking and is stubborn with mimicking. Your enthusiasm and suggestions made me feel so much better ❤️

I am hearing impaired. It helps to have slower speech for people like me as well as for nonnative English speakers (I have an English teaching certificate).

Your videos are by far the best speech videos that I have watched (and I've watched many) I love how fun and engaging your videos are. And I like that they are short and get straight to the point. Too many speech therapy videos ramble on and are too long, and waste your time, and aren't even helpful. By the time you get to the end you feel even more lost and confused than before! I like to target “ch” first and explain the tongue movement - however, what other sounds have they not quite mastered? S, z, dj?
Hi there! New SLP practicing and I need some tips. So my kid can do some routine gestures (high-five, flying kiss, fist bump) however when I try to teach her a new sign, she would rather manipulate my hands to to do the movement rather than do it herself. I am stumped! :(

My son does exactly the same thing, did you find a solution?
My 18.5 month old can imitate gross motor, fine motor, gestures, and signs. He LOVES signing “again”. But absolutely NO imitation of sounds. No sounds really at all. He actually has a finger sucking habit that I believe has held him back and we were turned down for early intervention because his receptive communication and everything else was fine. I would really appreciate your thoughts. Mom on a mission here. God Bless ❤️
teachmetotalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/CHART-of-11-Skills-Toddlers-Master-Before-Words-Emerge-from-Laura-Mize-and-teachmetotalk.com_.pdf check out this chart & really try to think about which skills may not be MASTERED (meaning he does then completely by himself at least 90% of the time) and then target those skills - even if it’s a lower skill - because sometimes we see kids who skip around in developing skills and end up developing splinter higher level skills but they are missing some lower level course skills that later impact their ability to continue to climb up the developmental chart for speech and language so we have to go back to what someone consider “easier” skills & fill in those blanks because there is a reason they are usually developed in order! another idea, have you tried holding back his favorite snack to see if he will imitate any sign or sound in order to get the snack? I think I modeled this on my video of TEACHING FUNCTIONAL SPEECH WORDS, SIGNS & GESTURES VIDEO
My baby is 10 month old. She fully attentive,she smiles and laughs when I sing and clap but does not imitate my clapping.
How is she now?
My child just turned 1year this 14th Jan. She does the hi-5. She was doing the claps when she was 9/10m old but now she just won't do it anymore. Any idea why so?
Hmmm try popping bubbles by hand clapping! It may be the sound that scares her? Is she using other gestures? Pointing, waving, etc?

My daughter will turn 3years in 4months. I feel so happy to share that she is doing really good now. She says sentences and everything else expected of her age. Try the show Ms Rachel. It really helped my daughter. It also helped me as a parent to learn helpful techniques to communicate with my child. I also noticed as she moved up from infant room to toddler room (18m+) in her daycare, she had an explosion of words.
