  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Neuroscientist Sarah Kucenas discovered a new role for glial cells in the development of nervous system - and in the process, discovered a new approach to the analysis of data in scientific observation. In her talk, she encourages young students and scientists to "see what no one else sees," even when conventional wisdom and practice would urge you to ignore what is right in front of you.
Sarah Kucenas is a molecular biologist and an Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Virginia. She holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacological and Physiological Science from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and completed Post Doctoral Fellowship at Vanderbilt University in August 2009. She is currently the head of the Kucenas Lab within the Biology Department at UVA, where she and her team of researchers study the assemblage and maintenance of the nervous system - specifically, the role of glial cells in nervous system formation in early development. She also examines how the nervous systems of different organisms are able to maintain themselves during illness and injury. As the self-proclaimed "Head Fish Whisperer," some of Kucena's most notable published work has focuses on the nervous system of the zebrafish; however, her lab has made significant strides that also affect human medicine, focusing on diseases such as multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy. Kucenas is also a strong advocate for increased federal funding for biological research.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I have a rare autoimmune disease and have documented some aspects that I believe align with this idea

The most important thing I see on this video that maybe many people don't see - or believe - is that science is neither neutral nor objective. Given that science today is used for multiple purposes like presenting us a seemingly higher truth - what was the role of religion in former times - or the importance, efficiancy or safety of pharmaceutic drugs or vaccines, we must learn to see, in how many places so-called science is used for manipulation or powerplay.
