- Now that Spot has an arm in addition to legs and cameras, it can do mobile manipulation. It finds and picks up objects (trash), tidies up the living room, opens doors, operates switches and valves, tends the garden, and generally has fun. Motion of the hand, arm and body are automatically coordinated to simplify manipulation tasks and expand the arm's workspace, making its reach essentially unbounded. The behavior shown here was programmed using a new API for mobile manipulation that supports autonomy and user applications, as well as a tablet that lets users do remote operations. Recently one of these got a family out of a hostage situation in NYC. Thank goodness for Spot. So much potential for search & rescue, esp where it might be dangerous for humans, pulling away debris and sensing human presence via temperature changes for rescue.

Watching this made me think how a neck is basically like another limb like an arm or a leg, and a head is like a hand that can manipulate things with it's mouth and teeth. The head is like a hand that can also see and hear, and consume food and water and send it into the body.
I remember seeing a documentary years ago about robotics.. and how artificial intelligence will need a 'body plan' to ever have some sense of 'self' in the real world. Obviously I know Spot's nowhere near intelligent/conscious/sentient, but the "is it an arm or mouth" question makes me think how body plans might affect such a thing.

Spot the Gardener is my favorite! You really should make one specialized to plant trees that is an absolutely brilliant use of their time considering the times we live in. Spot the garbage collector is my second favorite. If they can remove abandoned tires and blocks we are really talking about something quiet helpful.

i've always envisioned robots with specialty arms picking up litter or trash on the streets or nature. Finally there's something in the horizon. Maybe with an inclusion of different specialty arms, like grabbers (smaller or heavy duty), pokers, sweapers and even graffiti cleaners or zappers, etc. It would deliver the trash when full to a specific location and self charged as well.
No disrespect to any of its abilities, but planting a tree is at this moment in time, the coolest thing a robot can do outside of rescuing a human. That made me very happy to see.
If Spot got to choose, I wonder which sort of plant it would choose to put in soil.

I absolutely love the little two step process it took to open the door. It any bit of that was automatic then things are way more advanced than I thought.
The way it used its "head" to catch the door so it wouldn't close again was uncanny.

Really complex when you think about it. With all that self balancing and smart movements that spot does itself, it is still able perfectly control the arm in a XYZ grid, unaffected by the other moved to stabilize it.
The fact the hand was gentle enough to plant something, yet strong enough to mess with the cinderblock. I'm incredibly impressed!

How fast would a human have to run to escape from Spot? Asking for a friend.
You can easily outrun it, if I remember correctly it only goes top speed of 3 miles per hour. But I remember Boston dynamics made a similar quadruped that can outrun Usain Bolt! And that was a couple years back, imagine how fast it could be now. But on a serious note if robots weren't taking over I doubt they'd be using quadrupeds or bipeds in urban environments, they'd probably be on wheels and well... ya probably can't outrun that.
