2021 Mini Countryman JCW is HUGE but does it drive like a Mini ?

  • As a huge Mini fan I can't believe it has taken me this long to get a Countryman on the channel, but I figured the new 2021 Clubman JCW was a good place to start. Powered by the same 306hp 2.0L turbo charged four cylinder engine that is in my Clubman JCW it certainly has the performance. The big question is can something so big really be considered a Mini and does it drive like a Mini.

we own this car. my wife bough it to replace a 2002 Mini Cooper S that died finally. WE BOTH LOVE THIS NEW COUNTRYMAN JCW! She drives it like a normal car, I put it in SPORT and it is F'in Quick and the sound of the car is fun too. We love it. The size is perfect. It's not a BIG car, but it's certainly larger than her previous Mini. Don't wait, GET THIS CAR! It's worth every single penny. :)

After working at MINI, I’ve come to understand that MINI is a lifestyle brand, I believe that if (Mini) had continued anyway this is how it would’ve, or should I say should’ve ended up… You are buying a mini because you love the experience, the interior, the lock and being part of something different… I think that if you have a little mini when you were growing up in the first getting into driving, why shouldn’t you have the Clubman, or the countrymen if you want to keep those familiar feelings around you

I ordered my 2020 F60 JCW to spec from the factory. I love my panoramic roof, JCW sport seats, analog dials, and head up display. All were very worth it. My car had just started production when the Born plant was shutdown by BMW MINI for COVID. It was delayed a month or two, and I had the option to cancel and get the 2021 with a similar spec. That would've given me the Union flag tail lights, and the digital gauges, plus the ugly rear bumper valance you pointed out. I chose to stick with the analog dials and aero diffuser styled rear valance. I'm glad I did.
All in all, this is NOT an original MINI. However, this is hands down my favorite car ever, and it is the best road trip car I've ever driven. Huge smiles per mile return on investment.

Hi Pete. On the whole Mini 'size' thing.......earlier this week, we were in lane 2 of a dual carriageway behind a 'BMW Mini', who was overtaking an immaculate, original classic Mini in lane 1 and (I hate this acronym) OMG, you forget how tiny the original Mini is! When we got alongside in our Q3, the Minis' roofline just about reached our window line! What a lovely little car and, refreshingly, it was being driven by a young bloke....kudos!

Pops and bangs are a deal-breaker for this viewer. I had a Golf R once, and one of the contributors to why I got rid of it, was the "look at me!" grunting out the rear.

It usually adds to the character but since sound is losing its emotions year after year due to regulations, the crackles aren't that great anymore. The Golf crackles are really predictable which makes them very synthetic sounding to me at least.

I needed a car and I did not know Mini very well. I accidentally came across one. The garage showed me the interior. I felt in love. I *think* what makes the countryman make sense as a "mini", is when its the all4. It is such a direct, point and shoot, grippy thing. We had a Cooper SD all4 and loved it (we regret selling it). Apart from being that bit higher up, everything else has that direct feel. Not sure about these bigger, newest incarnations, but by the looks they've not lost that essence either.

Two years ago I purchased a 2015 Countryman S All4. I was looking for a car that was fun to drive and 3 minutes into the test drive that box was checked.....plus....it had 4 doors that made it easy for my two grandsons to slide in and out. The area behind the hatch accommodated all the groceries, duffel bags, and what-evers and if any more room was needed the rear seats folded down. When the weather gets dicey I have peace of mind knowing 4 wheels are gripping the road. The Countryman is an extremely practical car that goes and handles and puts a grin on my face whenever I drive and look at it.

Check out Car Creations TH-camrs video, they just recently replaced their center console on the 2019 JCW Clubman (and you''ll get a grin out of what the Canadian brothers have done to the Clubman in making it a rally version, mud scoops and all!). Basically they replace the entire unit, but it doesn't look too hard to do.

I had a Mini Paceman JCW the two door version of the Countryman. Once I got used to the slighter taller stance it has, I was able to throw it into corners exactly the same way I did with the two door hatch. The drive was actually better than the hatch because it wasn’t so bumpy on roads, unlike my current two year old JCW hatch, which has a very stiff suspension from factory. The Countryman exhaust won’t be popping and banging because it is a new car you’re driving and has not been properly run in yet.... trust me it will pop and bang once run in. But I have to agree the new digital Rev counter display is not good and I definitely prefer the analog display set up. So much so I am thinking of not bothering to buy the new JCW hatch that has just come into production, plus the new front grill and splitter looks terrible...
Once again Pedro a good video to watch, but odd that you work for Vintage Voltage which converts cars to electric.......but you don’t have an electric mini......could it be because there is no exhaust note what so ever, so no loud pops and bangs sound track to listen to.....😱😱😱😱

My 2019 Countryman S pops all over the place even just letting off the throttle, and if you hit a sporty downshift going around a corner it lets out a nice little growl on top. I think they must have tuned it out in later models because I drove a 2022 that didn’t do it.
TBH I think the Clubman is probably more to my liking in terms of driving dynamics, mostly because it’s lower and you sit lower in it. But the practicality of the Countryman (I have 2 kids and 2 dogs) won out during my buying process.

Just discovered this channel and thank goodness I have! My I-Pace goes back in November and I have been considering its replacement which is out of 3 cars - Mustang Mach-E, Wrangler or the Countryman JCW, and not only have you done tests on each one over the past few weeks, but in your tests you have answered nearly all of my questions (with one exception - the depreciation, which I consider is very important in deciding which car to buy).

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Great to hear Charlie. Depreciation is such a tricky thing to discuss I tend not to. Personally I’d always buy a used ex demonstrator. You don’t get to spec the car but you get a good deal. Paid £30k for my Clubman JCW. 4 months old with 4K miles and a lost price of £40k 🤷‍♂️😜

    • @charliepaynter

@@PetrolPed I think we both come from the same pod (not to mention the same area - I use to live in sunny Felpham, which is just along the A259 from Chi) - before I leased the I-Pace, I purchased my cars and would also 'hunt' for ex demos and nearly new from private sellers (before the I-Pace, had a fantastic Golf R which I purchased 6 months old from a Doctor in London for £30k (2.5k miles on clock and new price of £37k)). So I have between now and November to search for a newly new 'bargain' - unless I go for the Mach-E, but that will be leased through the company. And thanks for making known why you will not include depreciation in your reviews - what something may be worth in 3 years time is no more than guesswork...who knows what will happen over those 3 years. My wife and I are both in our mid 60's and have two MINI's (JCW Roadster and Cabriolet Highgate), we did have three but we sold the 2010 S as it was developing expensive habits at the garage. We're looking for a larger vehicle, something to take on longer cross country trips. We drove the old 2010 from Texas to Oregon etc and it was "crowded" but doable. However as I said we need a larger more comfortable vehicle, something that will hold the two of us, two teacup poodles plus more luggage. And it would be great if it could go "off-road" as well. I'm a landscape photographer and need to go down those dirt/gravel roads in search of that perfect image. I'd love to know the capabilities of the All4 system off pavement. I'm not planing on climbing over boulders of driving thru mud bogs, just mildly off-road so tons of ground clearance are not super important.

I finally got to test drive one of these a few weeks back and these are a real blast to drive. I actually liked it more than the Clubman as I thought it was still plenty fast and agile but had a nicer, smoother ride than the Clubman. I was surprised in a really good way!

People completely miss the point that they are the new iteration of the brand - if you want a classic mini, probably go and buy one. If you want a super fun car with all the modern comforts, here you go.

I've never been a fan of the Countryman styling personally, I think they're ugly. I love Mini but if I needed something bigger than my 3 door Cooper S or a Clubby I'd get something else.
You're right about "not a real Mini" bores though. What gets me is most of them have never even driven a Mini, original or new. I've had several originals and I can say from personal experience BMW have captured the essence of being in and driving a Mini. Cameras and sound came across great too :)

Happily I have one coming in a few weeks. Agree with much about what you’ve said. One little point. The bike carrier prep is only useful if you them buy the overpriced mini bike carrier. Doesn’t fit other carriers according to my dealer. On the other hand it has the roof rails which is very useful.

  • @Titot182
    @Titot182 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm so glad this video came! Missus has an R60 Countryman Cooper D, which with the bike rack makes it hilariously practical for lugging 2x 29er enduros on the back, BUT, I've been waiting to see if somebody sensible does a real wold shootout between the F60 countryman and F54 clubman JCW. Looks like you might have the answer, and given that I know you ride, I'm looking for an impartial opinion.
I'm intrigued to see if I should compromise on space for handling, or just live with the higher riding feeling and have more bootspace. Do you know if the bike prep pack is the same as the R60's, because that would mean I can use the same BMW rack (and with the roof bars, stick on 3x thules) - Who needs a pick up truck for shuttling your mates in the Forest of Dean!?

If you curb them? Was that directed at Mrs Ped? New camera looks great, sound is improved but could be better - sorry! There's a great wireless clip on available from Rode and Sony do one too. Plugs straight into the camera. Might be worthy of the investment.
But, it's never taken away anything from the strength of the reviews. Still great. Keep it up!

Always been a fan of the Mini and now it is a brand rather than a model, it has extended its appeal (and customer base) - not that I am an SUV fan however. The Clubman would get my money over the Countryman. A three door is still my favourite and I had a 2020 ‘S’ over the winter and it was the most fun to drive (despite it being automatic). It also had the strangely offset digital dials behind the steering wheel which bugged me all the time but couldn’t find a way to adjust it. Miss Emma Walsh also noted the same in her GP3 so I guess it wasn’t just an adjustment issue. Still loving your work Ped btw!...

Hello Peter! I’m still here but late with comments as work on the new house has taken over everything...it will end in about two months!
I think that new LCD screen looks terrible..like a cheap thing bought in from China and sold by Halfords! What I do like is that maybe this version is a car more accessible to a different market. The low, hard riding and small Mini Cooper is simply too challenging for older people but the Countryman has most of the Mini feel but easier to get in and with a better ride. With careful choices, maybe a car to consider to replace our C3....I might have a look! (I wish it had barn doors though!)
“it’s not a Mini” comments...tell those people to try having a crash in a 1959 Mini and I think they would soon prefer the new one!!
Stay safe Peter,,.I’m catching up as fast as I can! 😃😃😃😃Richard.
    P.S.
The new camera is a big improvement and the sound is excellent..it is not good on the bike videos so whatever set up that was did not work well...now it is perfect! May I ask what sort did you buy this time? I have tried making a few in car videos and found it really hard...the flow of words that you and others have seems very difficult to achieve. I will try again but my voice is not good..I seem to sound like Farmer Giles but not in a Harry Metcalfe kind of way!! No fame for me then!!😰😃😃😃

  • @bat33.12

Hi Ped I think the full screen car play might require a bit of a play with Bimmercode and an OBD adapter. I have the JCW rev counter display on the HUD of my MCS using bimmercode
No idea why you worry about having the car tell you what gear you are in though all that matters is the rev counter and where you are in the rev range for getting it out of a corner quickly
