Book Talk: Why White Evangelicals Support Trump

  • President Trump’s enthusiastic support from white, conservative evangelical Christians has been one of the most consequential political alliances of modern times. Without white evangelicals, Trump would not have won the Republican nomination in 2016 or have benefited from unwavering conservative loyalty since taking office. But the coalition is also undeniably puzzling, given Trump’s personal moral shortcomings, and his unfamiliarity with the language and substance of evangelical Christianity.
As a journalist with decades of experience covering the intersection of religion and conservative politics, Sarah Posner has produced a nuanced and persuasive explanation of this resilient alliance in her new book, Unholy: Why White Evangelicals Worship at the Altar of Donald Trump. By listening directly to evangelicals, letting them speak for themselves about their views of Trump and conservative politics, and recognizing the diversity within the evangelical world, Posner is able to tell the story of the individual leaders and congregations as they adapted to align with Trump on issues such as immigration.
Join the Political Reform program for an online discussion of Unholy, the past and future of the relationship between Trump and evangelical leaders, and its consequences. We’ll be joined by researchers and journalists who have looked at the intersection of religion and politics from other perspectives.

My church was my life since I was 3 yrs old. It’s where all my social life occurred. My husband became a Christian after I met him by taking him to my church. He loved it from the moment he walked in. It’s a story of meeting on the internet. Marrying 3 months later. We just celebrated our 15 yr of marriage. In pre election of 2016 politics come into the church. You would over hear someone calling Obama curse words. I was always under the impression politics stayed out of church. My 2016 we had been married 7 yrs. I didn’t know much about trump. I just new he was a rich guy and I saw 1 episode YES,(1) only of the Apprentice. I always pay attention to Republicans top because I want to know what there about just in case they win. I really knew very little about politics but my mom was a democrat and loved Hillary do she was always talking about Hillary. I voted for Hillary over Obama. By the time trump gave his first speech i knew he was bad bad news. My husband being a new Christian in 2006 went to the men’s Bible study for 8 yrs. now here he is seeing the church he joined and served 7 yrs now talking in ways that were not based on Jesus’s our words. My husband was hearing so much. When Hillary lost I went to my pastor to talk about how upset o was. I told him I don’t want to discuss politics or anyone views. I don’t want to know. I went on to say it’s hard going to church with ppl who put MAGA stuff everywhere, where those Red Hats.. Every time he did something bad I thought ok now the church will be done. Jesus said to welcome the stranger not take them away from their parents including a baby from her moms breast and locks them in cages basically indefinitely. Over 550 are completely lost. Trump kept no records where he sent the kids! He could of traffic them. After all that’s what his modeling agency was all about on the 90’s. When I began to sob I said trump will ruin our democracy. He wants to be a dictator. My pastor said “no many ppl here believe it’s Hillary that would be the dictator. My own pastor! My husband and I walked out after an advent dinner and never have been back. Not one person called to see why we haven’t come to church or if we’re ok. It’s been so hard watching Trump. He took a wrecking ball to America, and turned it completely into a melting pot of hate. I do not consider anyone who supports Trump a Christian. You can’t have heart that desires to serve the Holy Spirit if you can hate ppl who don’t look, love, or believe like you. Conservatives think they have the right to decide what is true and not true no matter what science or facts say. They can then actually carry assault weapons to intimidate ppl. Now we know they are ready to murder innocent ppl to have the president they want! If they really want to know the truth they could on their own spend time looking at what sides are doing. If you tell them Hillary hasn’t committed a crime so stop with the lock her up. They then list a long list of crimes she has done that have nothing to do with reality. I am trying to hold on to my faith but it’s hard when the ppl that call themselves Christian have become some of the most selfish, nasty, dangerous, liars I’ve ever come to know. You can’t take food from the sick, put barriers in the way so ppl don’t have health care (Jesus healed the sick) and be a true Christian. Jesus fed the poor aHe said love thy neighbor as thyself. They are pure shameful!

I can tell you precisely why "evangelicals" and other orthodox Christians make the mistake of supporting Donald Trump, who is literally an anti-Christ. And I'll preface this information with the fact that I am a God-ordained teacher and prophet. I don't expect or even want you to believe that, as you don't have good reason to do so. And blind faith is a dead end. But see if this doesn't make good sense to you:
Orthodox Christianity teaches and preaches a false "gospel" of JUDGMENT that says you must accept Jesus Christ to be the ONLY Son of God, who died for your sins, or you will be judged and condemned to hell by the God who "is love." This irrational "gospel" is NOT the "good news" of Jesus Christ or anyone else. For it is actually quite BAD news were it to be true, which it is not.
As he stated in the New Testament, the "good news" (Old English: "gospel") of "Jesus Christ" (Yeshua One with Christ) is the fact that "The Kingdom of God is within you." "Is it not written in your law 'I said ye are gods'?" Here Jesus quotes a psalm that continues on to say: "and all of you are children (or "sons") of the most High." ALL OF YOU, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, REGARDLESS OF YOUR BELIEFS OR ACTIONS. Yeshua One with Christ simply came to remind we-who-have-forgotten WHO WE ARE! "I know where I came from and where I am going; you do not."
Furthermore, Yeshua's good news is the fact that judgment is NOT a characteristic of God. "The Father judges no man." "I judge no man." "I came not to judge but to save." And the only judgment and condemnation is man-made. "This is the condemnation, that light has come into the world but men love darkness rather than light." MEN LOVE LIES. THIS IS THE ONLY JUDGMENT AND CONDEMNATION.
So, the GOOD NEWS of "Jesus Christ" consists of the facts that: 1) you are all God's sons, though you have forgotten who you are, and 2) judgment is not a characteristic of God, but is an error of man. But Orthodox Christians are judgmental, therefore they are able to support a judgmental anti-Christ named Donald Trump, BECAUSE THEIR FALSE "GOSPEL" IS A BAD NEWS MESSAGE OF JUDGMENT AND DAMNATION. And they have no problem being HYPOCRITES, violating every piece of advice given in the New Testament, because of this.
If you want all of the details, including the very Meaning of Life, give me a "click." I am the prophesied return of Elijah. And I don't receive TH-cam comments notifications, because I am interested in corresponding ONLY with true seekers, who will discover that I am very easy to find. AMEN.

To answer her question: Stop 'equating' RELIGIOUS Sects with the actual BODY OF CHRIST! The 'Evangelical Sect' may have spent the last 40 years setting itself up to be a powerful force in this country but then there's the ACTUAL Body of Christ...
He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant. He grew up in another village, where he worked in a carpenter shop until he was 30. Then, for three years, he was an itinerant preacher.
He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a home. He didn't go to college. He never lived in a big city. He never traveled 200 miles from the place where he was born. He did none of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but himself.
He was only 33 when the tide of public opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. One of them denied him. He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for his garments, the only property he had on earth. When he was dead, he was laid in a borrowed grave, through the pity of a friend.
Twenty centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure of the human race. I am well within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned--put together--have not affected the life of man on this earth as much as that one, solitary life.*

@The Naked Skeptic I don't know where your getting 'thousands' from but your are either a 'Member of the Body of Christ' or you not and I don't care what you CALL YOURSELF, and neither does HE. What signifies that is simply what you believe about CHRIST HIMSELF! It ain't complicated!

    • @Ms.Byrd68
      @Ms.Byrd68 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@The Naked Skeptic The problem for you (and those like you) is that you cannot admit to yourselves that in order to know us, you have to first KNOW HIM. Followers are judged by their leader, I can and will leave you with advise on KNOWING real Christians but unless you know HIM and who he is and was you will never be able to tell a true Christian from a 'False' one. Here is a line from the GUIDE BOOK written FOR CHRISTIANS to know each other...
      *Matthew **7:15**-20*
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
And for the record, this is ALL the research I am DOING FOR YOU, if you truly want to be able to JUDGE the 'false from the true' you need to first pick up a copy of the GUIDE BOOK (The Bible), the New Testament will tell you just about ALL you need to know in order to actually RECOGNIZE true Christianity being practiced. Sorry if I didn't really provide you with that 'GOTCHA!!!' moment you were actually looking for...

John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me *draw him:* and I will raise him up at the last day.

Modern Protestantism has hardly changed from this original context as Protestantism has always been this way.

It's unfortunate that several here wrongly link Trump to mega church leaders and the distasteful side of evangelicals. They blame him for many things he inherited. Yet they are blind to all he has achieved. They fail to honestly assess their own opinion. One can see how the main line media have formulated their thinking to believe Trump is a liar and a racist. They refuse to have an objective closer look. You like geese flocking together and expecting everyone else to follow you.

I have a theory that Protestantism particularly the Evangelical branch of Protestantism is a political party pretending to be a church. Now whether or not the 2020 election was stolen, it doesn't change the fact that many Evangelicals idolize Trump as if he were the Messiah Christ Himself. Rather after the fiasco that was the year 2020, it seems obvious that Trump was only using the Christian name for political purposes and his actions do not share someone who actually believes what Christ and the Apostles taught as seen in his own pride. And out of all the imperfections, pride is the worst one to have in a political position and now we have a fake president who is even more prideful than Donald Trump.

Hence, we now have 35-50 million unemployed people in the U.S., with a tsunami of foreclosures and evictions in the coming months and the coronavirus. In the 60's and 70's evangelicals stood for enthusiastic proclamation and careful defending of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They continued the legacy of the early reformed believers in their faith and practice. They were particularly concerned about the emerging influence of the "social gospel" (today's social justice ) and the "signs and wonders and prophets". (The gospel of health and wealth and security was not an issue then). Their concern was right. The present day definition of evangelicals is the combination of a "white believers" + "social justice", + "signs and wonders and prophets" + "health and wealth and security", but with the glaring absence of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I believe God has sent a wake up call to the believers in the USA by way of the pandemic crisis. God desires to see a purification and cleaning up of the church in America. God is calling the believers to return to the gospel of Jesus Christ. God desires to see the believers removing all the strange elements from their faith and practices.

I am watching this video now and hope you read this comment. On behalf of Evangelical Christian people who are not like those you labeled as let's say racist or such. As a Christian I don't support abortion or gay marriage. As a Christian I love the gay person and those who have had abortions because that is what Christian did and does. I had parents who had rules that if I violated had consequences. Despite issuing what consequences they deemed appropriate didn't stop them from loving me, but actually enforced the notion that they did love me. That being said all individuals have to deal with whatever consequences or rewards for their own choices. Having not always been a Christian and not having a gavel, robe, heaven or he'll to put anyone in, I don't judge anyone, however I do my best to make life choices based on my beliefs. I definitely agree with a huge portion of how you tied Trump into this movement you talked about, as a Christian I don't support either candidate though believe Biden is the lesser evil (not as a person being evil, but what he supports) I definitely don't support Trump. Many of my Christian friends declare how horrible he has acted, but they believe he is the one who will push to legislate America to a more biblical perspective. A real Christian knows that you can not legislate morality as it hasn't worked throughout history ever. Only a heart change can lead us to those moral changes. If you believe your choices are moral, a nd they conflict with my view of morality, that is your choice. My only question is what standard do you use to derive what you declare as your morals.

Trump moves the embassy and proclaims that he is the only one who can bring peace in that region. Yet, you hear *crickets* from evangelicals. Not even a raised eyebrow after all of the movies, sermons, seminars, books etc that they have written and sold on the coming Antichrist and the Antichrist system. Trump's idealogy fits the antichrist system that evangelicals preach; however, the same evangelicals seem to see Trump as a savior rather than the "man of sin" he more closely resembles.

Love this, but wish Eddie would expound on this (around 27:10 mark) "this this isn't going to be uprooted by just simply ridding us of dot ridding us of Donald Trump this this view right, which is in some ways justified by certain theological understanding..."
Can anybody offer what those "certain theological understandings" are? As a student of Christian theology, I'm really curious what Eddie or Sarah think those are. (Maybe Sarah covers some of those in the book...)

The man or woman could be a wrong person in characteristic but if he or she can be right person for a job they will go for it. Almost like vote a gang leader to fight for Christian rights even those Trump does more harm than good for Christian community at whole he will hurting Christian witnessing for Christ to the world.

I'm considered "white" although I'm more Chitimacha Indian and Lebanese. My father was a Christian pastor and I attended Bible College in my younger years. I also spent many years working in Christian ministries and inner city outreach.
    However...
I am absolutely aghast at the Christian community at large (especially the white communities) supporting such a disgusting, narcissistic, wicked and greedy man.
My theory has always been this: For most of my life, it was liberals who were outspoken and often rude and inconsiderate of the beliefs and feelings of conservatives. But when Donald Trump appeared on the scene and gave them back a few hard doses of their own medicine, Christian conservatives felt vindicated and that they had their own fighter in the ring for once, who wouldn't give the other side an inch without trying his best to make them regret it.
5 years later, his behavior has spread to all of his supporters, causing Christian conservatives to lose the one thing that made them respectable to those with opposing beliefs. Their integrity.
Thanks to that, I've lost respect for so many people I once admired. The Trump movement has pushed anyone who isn't his sycophant into the fringe minority of conservatism, and people like me who refuse to support a man who does not represent my beliefs as a person, a Christian, an American, or a conservative are treated like red headed step children who have betrayed their own party and must secretly be liberals or support the mass genocide of unborn children.
I'm disgusted. Nothing about the republican party as it is post-Trump remotely resembles what I always thought the party stood for, and Christians who claim Jesus is their Messiah have come to treat Donald Trump as though HE'S our nation's Savior. I actually saw someone say "Trump came to deliver us from evil."
I'm throwing up in my mouth just typing all of this, and for the first time in my life, I'm grateful the Republicans lost an election.

I'm a Christian, striving to be a disciple of Christ to the best of my ability. Even though some of the statements made in this video were incorrect and lacked context in reference to Christians as a whole, I actually agree with the majority of what was said. I also must say that given what has happened over the past 3 monthsit has aged quite well, unfortunately. I wish, as I always do, that they would invite an "other" into the room for conversations like this rather than pulling from sanitized research and studies that lack context and the depth. Having the "other" present always makes for a more lovely discussion. Maybe not the place here though I guess.
