When you speak, I feel as if somebody heard ME! Thank you for you deep extensive study and honest exposure of what's been at the root of American Christianity for so long. Jimmy Carter was the embodiment of a president who was also a man of faith. But he’s held as an example of “weakness” while all of Trump’s obvious moral failings are ignored because he’s “honest”.

I walked away from churches after my mom's death because they were the cause of my mom's death. And then when my Ukrainian cousin came to United States evangelist was sitting next to her she was only 14 years old lost her mom and dad and the Evangelist when he found out she was Ukrainian called her a Nazi and to repent. She asked him are you Christian he said yes. She says we do not have Christians like you and Ukraine. For we love Jesus and love others as our neighbor. We believe in our faith. She told him he is not Christian for his to have love not hate or to be judgmental. She is now living in Canada. She says she does not want to live in United States with Christians like this with this thinking of hating others.

Thank You Kristin! As a child I attended church on a regular basis until graduating fm High school, then sporadically until retiring about 15 yrs ago. About the time i contemplated becoming a member of a local Baptist church Obama became President. For the most part, the atmosphere seemed quite normal and run of the mill - no females in the clergy or offices, women did the grunt work - cleaning, preparing meals and snacks, etc. Not exactly my ideal, but when in Rome… When Obama became Pres - all bets were off. Snide comments about Obama and his Presidency, railing against Democrats and their unGodly policies were coming from the pulpit. I was asked directly, “How can you be a Dem and call yourself a Christian?”. Mind you I got no blow back from writing a weekly check for the offering, but weirdly ostracized to a diff Sunday School Class and told (not asked) that weekly Bible School classes would be held at my house. Fortunately, I had to fly to the Coast for a bit and upon returning, terminated my relationship with that pastor and his establishment. What i experienced at that Church was nothing like my youth. Instead of the msg of love and kindness as in “love thy neighbor as thy self, it was accusatory, judgmental, and worst of all political! So my lesson from this experience has been - I will never set foot in or support an institution championing a right wing populist agenda masking as a church!

Evangelicals say they are obeying the word of God and following the example of Jesus. I beg to differ, if Jesus were alive today they'd call him a p****, a commie, an emasculated liberal. There is no way they'd allow him to go into their churches or preach to them. Trump is what they want, a white man who believes women are subservient to men, anyone who follows a different faith is bad and can't be trusted, you crush your enemies. He got into the White House by hating the same people they hate. It was so open, so brazen, they said that he says the things they think but can't say, he is "honest" because he has no filter. In reality, all he did was make it OK to openly be racist and sexist and homophobic. They've given up the pretense, what we see now is who they really are.

I just remember it was some quote/verse related to money/wealth...and how that [money/material things] shouldn't be a Christian's priority.
Like I said, Al started the comment with 'god said...'
The Republican's immediate reply was: "Not my god."

To get a clue about this read about Rev. Robert Rauschenbush. Rauschenbush basically started the social gospel movement, and did not believe in Biblical inerrancy.
There was a backlash against the Social Gospel since then.
The backlash was adopted by Republicans who were afraid of the social gospel. But John Kasich a Republican doesn’t buy the mainstream Republican apostasy.
The Social Gospel emphasizes one aspect of the Gospel. There are other aspects. It’s not the whole complete Truth. I don‘t expect all traditions to emphasize it. But to ignore it completely takes a great deal of ignorance and mental gymnastics.

Not to mention the fact that the social/political/economic stands they take further alienate them from the very people that Jesus, the author of their faith, commissioned them to reach out to.

The white promo in Evangelicalism bit lends some sort of possible explanation to something that has puzzled me since my misspent youth. In Corpus Christi, TX in the early '80s there was a rescue mission with a Mexican-American preacher who at one point in a sermon went on about how God liked and the Devil hated blonde hair and blue eyes. When this preacher was Mexican-American with Aztec physical features. It kind of creeped me out that he seemed to regard me in a more positive light simply because I had yellow-blonde hair at the time and blue to blue-green eyes. And there I was a 21 year old homeless guy sowing my wild oats in the worst ways possible.

"Jesus was crucified by a coalition of political-religious conservatives (the Pharisees) and political-religious liberals (the Sadducees), working through the secular government (the Roman Empire).
All political parties and systems are a mixed bag of good and evil principles, whereas the kingdom of Christ is composed only of good principles that arise out of God’s indiscriminate love for all people. As a follower of Jesus, therefore, I cannot be loyal to any one political party, but rather must affirm true principles wherever they may be found regardless of political party.
I must subscribe to the good principles that are present on the conservative end of the spectrum and to the good principles that are on the liberal end of the spectrum. And that makes me a political freak, or at least a political anomaly, in a world of frenzied political hate." End Quote. I went to Calvin and there was a strain of Amway / Reaganism there in the mid 1980s.
I can remember coming across a Conservative Digest article in college and thinking that they had little power and influence.
Then, I was in Georgia during the Gingrich years in the 1990s. I saw how deluded the North Fulton / East Cobb hedonism was with a Christian facade. For such nice looking communities to drive through (all creature comforts imaginable), the sense of privilege and strong personalities were hard to ignore. I started to worry.
None of that compared to this recent toxic strain that evolved from early Fox "News" to Trumpism, years of reinforcement of false narratives, Machiavellian strategies, and the re-victimization of victims. That is, hated of the poor and minorities. If you are not "successful", then you are weak.
The Amway / Reaganism system on steroids in a social media age.

To blame one race, one culture, for the troubles of the world is what has been repeated throughout man's history. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. What are the definitions of "evangelical" from the different eras of history?

    • @busylivingnotdying
      @busylivingnotdying 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I cannot answer that, but I think it helps to see it as a "revival" kind of Protestantism. Perhaps beginning with types like Jonathan Edwards in the US (a period called "The Great Awakening,") Strengthened by the formulaic gospel of Billy Graham in the 1950's.
Preaching about a fiery hell provided a lot of power over the masses (later used for political purposes)
Another influence was REACTIONARY Christianity protesting MODERNITY. Modern theology here is exemplified by movements like the Second Vatican, German Liberal Theology and Liberation Theology (in poor countries). The Evangelicals thought the gospels should NOT be "modernized" or confused with "Godless Socialism" (and therefore objected to caring for the poor through governmental "programs of social uplift" as Martin Luther King called it.) The Soviet Union championed the poor working classes and international Socialism, so the evangelicals then, stood for "the opposite," namely Americanism, Nationalism and Capitalism (they had to shoehorn in Christian verses to make it work)
Christianization and politicization of ABORTION (among Protestants) in the 1970's is also part of this Evangelical political movement of today.
      Note:
Here in Norway we tend to separate between "Evangelic" (just normal Protestants) and "Evangelical" (firebrand conservative Christians). I hope that helps ..

If you are a Christian, then read the bible, grapple with what it says - for it does not fit neatly into modern political idealogies - and any party that claims to own it is using religion for its own aims. Recognize the tree by the fruit it produces. If it possesses none of the fruits of the Spirit (charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity), it is not of the Spirit.

Here in the US I have heard R's equate themselves with Christianity and Democrats with atheism (and Satan and secret muslims, basically whoever is anti-Christ) since the 80s and it has only grown in recent years. It has helped solidify identity politics with their base but I worry that it is at a great cost because it is turning others away from coming to know Him, because they don't like what's being publicly represented. It is too bad more emphasis in our culture is not made about the distinction between (U. S.) evangelical and mainstream churches. I’m not sure about Catholic churches, but many Protestant main-stream churches offer a good alternative to evangelical churches. They have not had the razzle dazzle of evangelical TV ministers, and their attendance has waned in recent years, but they are much stronger in traditional Christian doctrine and are usually not subject to the John Wayne phenomenon.

I can only speak for myself being a white, Christian evangelical myself but just know that most others like me held these same views:
Most of us didn’t like Trump as a person but viewed ANYONE dogmatically against the media, and the Democrats, as someone to champion. Face it the Republicans are typically weak and spineless
The bus recordings were definitely not good and I cringed at hearing Trump talk like he did. But when it came time to vote I knew I would never support anyone on the Democratic ticket especially Hillary. To me, the Democratic Party is the personification of true EVIL….and for that reason I voted for Trump even though he was not a good person either
Obama was definitely not viewed as a Christian by me because of his many, many lies! Worst of all, he signed an executive order declaring Gay marriage as the Law…..without taking a vote so the people could chime in. This was Executive overreach! If he allowed the PEOPLE to vote I would have more respect for him.
Beth Moore is viewed as a clown-world type of teacher/evangelist, not anyone that had much influence in the Christian world.
So is it safe to assume people on the Left have no standards either with hypocrisy to boot? For example, Bill Clinton, adulterer, rapist, and the guy who had sex with a 20 year old intern in the Oval Office is still highly respected, almost hero worshipped by people on the Left?? This is curious indeed
Lastly I’ve lived in 3 States and I’m 50 years old yet I almost never encountered white racism whether in the church or not. So out of say 400 white people I’ve know or still know, maybe 2 or 3 were racists. It definitely exists but not as prevalent as this panel says it is. The Bible itself teaches all people are equal in the eyes of God, because He created them all, that is my belief and what most of the Christians I know believe. I love all people from every race and culture!

Most American churches don't follow Jesus or actually know what he said or instructed. Followers of Christ today should not follow what Jesus taught the twelve disciples but what he taught Paul only. He was the apostle of the gentiles. Romans 11:13. Acts 22:21.
    1. Jesus said, "But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Matthew 10:5, "These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:".
    2. Churches teach tithing. But the bible says, "Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver."
3.They teach baptism as part of or a requirement for conversion. Mark 16:16. However, Acts 16:30, "And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.".
    4. They don't know about "the Dispensation of grace ". Romans 16:25; Ephesians 3:1-2.

@@tyronegooch5251 Paul was a Jewish fella from Tarsus-a Greco-Roman area. He was a Roman citizen + worked for Rome-initially persecuting Christians. He claimed to be a Pharisee but probably lied. Because he went against Jewish law, which Jesus never did, he probably was not a Pharisee or devoted Jew + romanized. Only about 7 of Paul’s writings have been attributed to him. The others were probably written by others as style, language etc. is different.
Paul + early church fathers were anti-Semitic. The things they said about Jesus’ people is horrible + these portions in the gospels should be removed. Paul was a Roman citizen who promoted a personal religion that used Jesus + his movement to undermine the Jewish rebellion + to unite tribes under a single deity within a pagan worldview. Not- Jesus eventually becomes a man-god which is a pagan practice. Then 300 years AFTER Jesus death the trinity was devised.
Basically it’s all bunk devised-contrived by those in power. The true followers of Jesus were Jews who never ever said he was divine. Jesus never said he was divine. The gospels were written decades AFTER Jesus died and AFTER Paul laid out his religious belief system.
Christianity has been a horrific business-and it is a business. Religious belief does not change bad people into good people- in many cases religious belief makes bad people worse. Putin is a perfect example. As is ISIS or even Nazi Germany which was a VERY Christian country.

Individually, they are wonderful; but as a political beast, they are extremely compromised. They are also deeply rooted in white nationalism. It is very evident. It is not all, but 82% is a big group to embrace such a vile man as their political leader. It is those same evangelicals who attack CRT, wants to ban BIPOC's perspective of history, and just can't see Democrats as possibly being Christian. They call them communists. Why did so many white evangelicals attack "black lives matter" without having a clue about what CRT really is, they attacked it. It is not all, but there is an overwhelming mass that is white nationalists and they seriously need to listen to this book! There is a lot of darkness there. The patriarchy comes out with purity culture and women submitting to their husbands and women not being allowed to preach or be leaders in the church. It is more subtle these days, but it is deeply ingrained. It is how SBC kept a database of 200 plus pages which listed all their ministers accused of sexual abuse. That was all kept hidden and the ministers were protected. Not one of them was turned into police. It is not blatant, but that misogyny is deeply ingrained. Just watch what they politically attack.

Barack Obama was raised as a Muslim in Indonesia in accordance with the country's laws for their schools and in the faith of his stepfather, prior to moving to Hawaii with his Caucasian grandparents. This is not some birther tall tale about where he was born. The Christian pastor that Barack Obama chose when living as an adult in Chicago was not known for the kind of Christian values many traditional Christians subscribe to. In the first 10 minutes of listening to this, I hear people extrapolating from the flimsiest information and doing the typical mind reading trick of talking about what other people think and want and intend that no one can possibly know. Being an Evangelical Christian does not make you God. Just because a bunch of ideas are attractive and interesting does not make them true. I'm not going to read this book because I've been paying very close attention over the last 6 years and the only divisive language I heard was coming out of the mouths of illiberal liberals and far-left political opponents who sought to increase their power and influence by damaging the ability of Donald Trump and his administration to try something different, which was why he was elected. At the time of the 2016 elections The Establishment had been rejected and the Democrat top candidate was Bernie Sanders who was not even registered as a Democrat. On the other end of the spectrum was Donald Trump who had been registered as a Democrat but who had no political experience and no experience even working for a company that was not his own family's firm oh, so there was a lot rules and norms and ways of doing things of which she had no understanding. People tried to overturn his 2016 election, promising to impeach him from day one and investigating him and trying to criminalize routine associations through his entire term. The divisive statements were from the leaders of the Democrat Party. The hate was palpable. They said he was a demagogue and compared him to Hitler when most of his official speeches were conducted in a monotone. He allowed the governors of the states to handle the pandemic as they saw fit. Do you support Trump? The last I saw Trumpeepoo had three wives, committed adultery with every wife, grabs women by the privates, and lied every time he opened his mouth. President Obama on the other hand only had one scandal and that is when he wore a tan suit, whereas, Trump tried to shred our constitution. President Obama is a loving father and husband who doesn't cheat on his wife. The same is true about President Biden as well. Happily married and faithful. No scandal! Oh yea, President Obama married one woman his whole adult life! President Biden is a solid Christian who really cares about people. He went into politics when it was all about public service, not self-centered aggrandizement like Trump! Now, which one do the white evangelical right-wingers embrace? The one with character or the one that grabs women by the privates? Uhm...which one actually has Christian morals? Trump or Obama? If you are actually honest, the one who lives his life like a Christian isn't the one white evangelicals support. They like the corrupt lying narcissist known as Trump. Uhm, I'd say we have a real problem with hypocrisy and BS in the white evangelical movement. Oh yea, it is white evangelicals who are embracing white nationalism/supremacy!! It is white evangelicals who love their damn guns and support weapons made for mass murder. Uhm...I'd say we white evangelicals idolize John Wayne much more than Jesus!! And nobody treats the marginalized as poorly as white evangelicals especially if they are BIPOC or LGBTQ+ Honey, we in the white evangelical movement are in serious trouble. Arrogant and judgmental hypocrites! We have some serious repentance to do but we prefer living in denial. If you prefer Trump to Obama, you seriously need to read her book!! By the way, White evangelicals really don't like this book because they are white nationalists at heart who feel threatened that BIPOC communities now have the same rights and get the same power as us whites. At the heart, a large majority of white evangelicals are white nationalists/supremacists at their core and feel very threatened by the fact that we are quickly becoming the minority of minorities. I say Boo Hoo and I have the smallest violin to play for us! We also have no confidence in our faith because we are fearful of all these other faiths in America! What fearful wimps we really have become! We don't live life in faith. We live in fear because white evangelicals have not learned that perfect love casts out fear. We feel more powerful by making imaginary enemies of the other and keeping anyone who does not look like us, think like us or god forbid not vote like us under our control. We don't like to feel uncomfortable with the other. Sorry, that is NOT Jesus! That is just insecure irrational fear!! American white evangelicals make every decision based on fear. We DON"T live by faith and that reality is very evident to everyone else! Our religion in our society has become nothing but a resounding gong and clanging cymbals! We no longer see the truth so no one can trust our words or our actions. The salt has seriously lost its savor and we have no light because we are busy roaming around lost in our own self-made darkness. We foolishly think a loud mouth corrupt right-wing politician is going to save us. Silly us! Nothing like mixing our political idolatry with our religion. We just prefer John Wayne to Jesus. No big deal, right?

By the way, a big-mouth bully does not mean strength. Do you know who makes the best leaders? It is the quiet, humble people who actually are honest and care. They lead by example. Big mouth bullies only lead by their manipulative charisma and an iron fist!! I'll take a monotone voice to a BS liar any day of the week.

It is funny how quickly white evangelicals manipulate words and jump on the "hate" bandwagon when they are called to account or made to feel uncomfortable. (it is an obnoxious emotional manipulation by the way! Something we white evangelicals have been taught to do from the cradle). If we don't like what someone says call it hateful or that they must be going to hell. We do that really well as white evangelicals. Funny how that works. It is all a smokescreen and trying to pretend you have the higher moral argument. White evangelicals like their white status quo way more than they want the truth. Calling one to accountability is not hate. It is speaking the truth to those who have chosen to be pretty blind to reality or just don't know. It is so deeply ingrained in our culture that one just doesn't know how really racist our nation still is and the real problem with systemic racism that is in our very roots. This kind of racism is not a pointing of the finger, you are a racist and evil. It is now below the surface embedded in the very systems of our society and government. We fixed the external blatant racism with the civil rights act, but now we have all the webs of racism in our society below the surface that affects every system in our culture. The 1960's civil rights are anti-racism 1.0. Now we are going for the harder stuff deeply ingrained in our society. It is anti-racism 2.0. You call it hate when a whole marginalized group of people is calling out for the same rights you obtain so easily being white. Yea, you don't like it because they dare talk about racism which is as deeply embedded as misogyny in the white evangelical church. Watch January 6th - it is very evident white evangelicals have a serious issue with race! They want it white and they want to stay in power. By the way, especially southern white evangelicalism is a slaveholder's religion and it is deeply rooted in our white evangelical psyche! Time to shake it up, face the truth, and repent so our faith and our nation can heal. No cheap, sloppy agape. I mean real repentance and healing! What is not faced can't be changed!!! Until we do, we are no different from the rest of our society! I think secretly we like those tiki torches. You know there are fine people on both sides of those tiki torches. I mean we didn't like Robert E Lee coming down off his horse in the public square and we hated when they took down the traitor's flag off the North Carolina's capitol flag pole! But, no it is not us with the hate or with race issues. There is nothing to be seen here at all. We are perfect. It is the other who is the sinner. It can't be us with the sin problem. It is the evil them! They have the hate and we are just innocent victims being persecuted for our faith. NOT!!!

Barack Obama was not raised a muslim. I think you are one of those Evangelical frauds who hate Jesus and Jesus Hesus for political power
