Jimmy Carter was the embodiment of a president who was also a man of faith. But he’s held as an example of “weakness” while all of Trump’s obvious moral failings are ignored because he’s “honest”.
Trump is a Hollywood generated image... no different from the president before him. It is the uninvited social engineers in our media who pick our leaders, not the lawful citizens.
Carter is one of the most honest people to ever hold office.... I would also like to observe that modern evangelicalism is not Christianity, in my opinion, but a pseudo-Christian cult.
Kristin Du Mez...... I LOVE YOU!!!! I am a Black pastor and I have been saying many of the same things you are speaking about for So Many years now! When you speak, I feel as if somebody heard ME! Thank you for you deep extensive study and honest exposure of what's been at the root of American Christianity for so long. Thank God for you and your intelligence and diligence on this subject. I walked away from churches after my mom's death because they were the cause of my mom's death. And then when my Ukrainian cousin came to United States evangelist was sitting next to her she was only 14 years old lost her mom and dad and the Evangelist when he found out she was Ukrainian called her a Nazi and to repent. She asked him are you Christian he said yes. She says we do not have Christians like you and Ukraine. For we love Jesus and love others as our neighbor. We believe in our faith. She told him he is not Christian for his to have love not hate or to be judgmental. She is now living in Canada. She says she does not want to live in United States with Christians like this with this thinking of hating others.
I am so sorry this happened to your family. I hope your cousin is happy in Canada. I, too, will be leaving as soon as I am able. This country is becoming too toxic for comfort.
That's the problem. Most people do "love others as they love themselves". An awful lot of people subconsciously hate themselves, and project it on others.
You've ended up with this perverse post Freudian critique, because you've omitted the premise of "Love they neighbour", which is "Love God" with all your humanity.
Blessings. A preacher, author, editor, and licensed physician said this way back when: "The work of the Gospel is to make peace between men and God, and wherever a heart surrenders to God the *spirit of militarism and nationalism must go"* (November 26, 1896, PTUK).

Thank You Kristin! As a child I attended church on a regular basis until graduating fm High school, then sporadically until retiring about 15 yrs ago. About the time i contemplated becoming a member of a local Baptist church Obama became President. For the most part, the atmosphere seemed quite normal and run of the mill - no females in the clergy or offices, women did the grunt work - cleaning, preparing meals and snacks, etc. Not exactly my ideal, but when in Rome… When Obama became Pres - all bets were off. Snide comments about Obama and his Presidency, railing against Democrats and their unGodly policies were coming from the pulpit. I was asked directly, “How can you be a Dem and call yourself a Christian?”. Mind you I got no blow back from writing a weekly check for the offering, but weirdly ostracized to a diff Sunday School Class and told (not asked) that weekly Bible School classes would be held at my house. Fortunately, I had to fly to the Coast for a bit and upon returning, terminated my relationship with that pastor and his establishment. What i experienced at that Church was nothing like my youth. Instead of the msg of love and kindness as in “love thy neighbor as thy self, it was accusatory, judgmental, and worst of all political! So my lesson from this experience has been - I will never set foot in or support an institution championing a right wing populist agenda masking as a church!
Why is it that when the issue of rascism comes up and a somewhat civil conversation is to be had, blacks are asked to explain it; give their deep thoughts on it; give answers to possibly remedy it... this burden is on blacks and not on the perpetrators.
Evangelicals say they are obeying the word of God and following the example of Jesus. I beg to differ, if Jesus were alive today they'd call him a p****, a commie, an emasculated liberal. There is no way they'd allow him to go into their churches or preach to them. Trump is what they want, a white man who believes women are subservient to men, anyone who follows a different faith is bad and can't be trusted, you crush your enemies. He got into the White House by hating the same people they hate. It was so open, so brazen, they said that he says the things they think but can't say, he is "honest" because he has no filter. In reality, all he did was make it OK to openly be racist and sexist and homophobic. They've given up the pretense, what we see now is who they really are.

Just bought the book! Grew up surrounded by Evangelicals but in West Africa where I still live. This is a very insightful discussion. Thank you much for raising awareness. Christ followers around the world are floored by the Evangelical support for Trump. May God help us and bring us back to centre.
The "center" or centre in the UK, is Jesus the Christ, the King. Those who follow Him, the True Shepherd (John 10) hear His voice, and not the voice of strangers. Any one that follows Trump will fail, but... he has upheld some principles that matter--much more than can be said for Biden, Obama, Bush, Clinton, and George H W Bush. God uses sinful men, do you not believe that? We are in a downward cesspool slide toward anarchy and chaos. It is not flesh and blood that is our enemy, but spiritual wickedness which is deceptive. Media is mostly controlled by the entities that are pulling the world system into a world government. And thereby have an agenda to denigrate Trump or anyone perceived to adhere to anything he says. But Trump is not your or my enemy, global governance without Jesus Christ is. It is what spiritual warfare is about. There is only one body, one faith, one baptism. The "Centre" is Jesus, not evangelicals, not RCC, not Trump, and certainly not the coming antichrist.
To me Trump-ism is of THE TREE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL, he's on their good side, leading many to the anti-christ. True BELIEVERS are in the TREE OF LIFE( Jesus Christ ). Trump-ism is a great illusion, like Barabbus, a great religious leader against the establishment. They have choice of Jesus or Barabbus, they shout, "BARABBUS." Mobs seem like they take on a life of their own, a spirit, and people are blinded to the truth, people want to be involved with something bigger than themselves alone. BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD. REJOICE! This is the day the Lord hath made.

The first sentence in this video needs flushed out a little. Claiming that “As a Christian I think that truth is important.” Do you really think that because you’re a Christian, truth is important. The truth doesn’t care if you’re a Christian. The irony burns. As a Christian you must have faith, which is believing or accepting something without evidence.
@@ewokwarrior2656 , I agree with Ben Franklin. "The way to see by faith is to close the eye of reason." Faith is the same thing as superstition - baseless, groundless delusion. People who have faith don't care about truth at all. Faith and truth are like oil and water. They do not mix.
God made us to believe in our own choices and not by others . If you can't know by now between good and bad or make choices by listening to others then you need to give up your faith . It is only false . 1
The evangelicals in question have been consistently inconsistent in their approach to Christianity. They have always molded their biblical beliefs to make them palatable for themselves and their goals. An example of this is the way they have presented the image of Jesus as someone who is a physical representation of themselves, which is idolatry as well. Another example would be that they didn’t respect territorial boundaries that were already established. That is expressly prohibited per the Bible. Man stealing is prohibited as well. Western Christianity is a perverse interpretation of the Bible that has always been utilized to conquer and subdue other peoples to steal land and resources.
Years ago, on CSPAN, I saw a conversation between Al Sharpton and a Republican political strategist (or something)...at some point Sharpton said something like 'god said, (insert bible verse)'...I can't remember the verse but it was something about _caring for the needy_ or _it's hard for a rich man to enter heaven_ I just remember it was some quote/verse related to money/wealth...and how that [money/material things] shouldn't be a Christian's priority. Like I said, Al started the comment with 'god said...' The Republican's immediate reply was: "Not my god." When I heard it it always made me wonder what do Conservative Christians really believe...
To get a clue about this read about Rev. Robert Rauschenbush. Rauschenbush basically started the social gospel movement, and did not believe in Biblical inerrancy. There was a backlash against the Social Gospel since then. The backlash was adopted by Republicans who were afraid of the social gospel. But John Kasich a Republican doesn’t buy the mainstream Republican apostasy. The Social Gospel emphasizes one aspect of the Gospel. There are other aspects. It’s not the whole complete Truth. I don‘t expect all traditions to emphasize it. But to ignore it completely takes a great deal of ignorance and mental gymnastics.
@@stanlee2589 And? What does that have to do with a Republican saying he doesn't worship the god of Abraham? This isn't about "wealth" it's about whether Republicans/their voters are being honest with everyone. Are they who they claim to be or are they liars trying to undermine American society.
They believe in money control and submission that's what they believe.they have said and done it to many times for it to be untrue. When a person shows you who they are believe it. Question is how long will you let the lie live I SAY KILL IT.
Christians could probably do more than a baseline 10%-15% giving if a third of their check wasn't taken off the top by the government. They have families to support too. I don't understand the money comments, are you talking about millionaires and billionaires?
It really is noteworthy that fundamental differences in theological interpretations between Evangelical sects aren't necessarily enough to make enemies of others within the overall Evangelical community, but different social/political/economic philosophical orientations are. Not to mention the fact that the social/political/economic stands they take further alienate them from the very people that Jesus, the author of their faith, commissioned them to reach out to.
You can't fool God,them kind of people ain't no Christian in the first place that's why things are like this. Your sins and who you are will always come to the light
Evangelicals are not Christians. Christians believe in the prophets; peace be upon them. Evangelicals believe in the profit$ and how to get a piece of them.
I don't even like the word Christian anymore. The company I keep now is much kinder and these people are habitually honest for a pleasant change. AA meetings helped me see how being brutally honesty with yourself can get rid of all skeletons and imaginary ghosts if you continue making strides towards living and staying sober. Making many meetings with totally different people having a turn to speak or pass on the group's chosen topic helped me a decade ago. Your HIGHER power turns out to be your inner sober adult you had kept in your trunk stoned, drunk and lied to.
I’ve listened a fair amount to Ms DuMez and largely agree with her thesis that there is, probably always has been, racial segregation within any phase of the evangelical movement, and that certainly within the last several years, there has been some political synthesis between power-hungry evangelical leaders (I.e., the mega church televangelists) and secular nationalists who seek to dominate American society on some caste system of their own arbitrary convenience. That said, having heard arguments by neoconservatives about how blacks in general are to blame for gang violence, and Muslims in general are responsible for stateless Islamic terrorism (why don’t they police their own communities?!?!) and the responses to those arguments (each individual is an individual, not required or even able to police the nefarious activities of some small segment of their population), I struggle with the headline of this video essentially blaming the entire evangelical community for corrupting a faith. Sure, there are churches, maybe even a lot of them, who gave into their base instincts toward selfish rationalizations and became short-sighted about acquiring political power through ungodly means, and possibly for ungodly purposes; but there are also evangelical congregations that stayed true to a modest, sincere belief structure; those congregations should not be belittled for the actions of others.
I cannot answer that, but I think it helps to see it as a "revival" kind of Protestantism. Perhaps beginning with types like Jonathan Edwards in the US (a period called "The Great Awakening,") Strengthened by the formulaic gospel of Billy Graham in the 1950's. Preaching about a fiery hell provided a lot of power over the masses (later used for political purposes) Another influence was REACTIONARY Christianity protesting MODERNITY. Modern theology here is exemplified by movements like the Second Vatican, German Liberal Theology and Liberation Theology (in poor countries). The Evangelicals thought the gospels should NOT be "modernized" or confused with "Godless Socialism" (and therefore objected to caring for the poor through governmental "programs of social uplift" as Martin Luther King called it.) The Soviet Union championed the poor working classes and international Socialism, so the evangelicals then, stood for "the opposite," namely Americanism, Nationalism and Capitalism (they had to shoehorn in Christian verses to make it work) Christianization and politicization of ABORTION (among Protestants) in the 1970's is also part of this Evangelical political movement of today. Note: Here in Norway we tend to separate between "Evangelic" (just normal Protestants) and "Evangelical" (firebrand conservative Christians). I hope that helps ..
One can build a social justice movement around the energy of hate. This is easily understood and there's nothing particularly new about it. What Jesus does is build a social justice movement around the energy of love (Galatians 5:6), love for God, neighbor, and even enemy.
@7:35, God sometimes chooses, God has to choose, God doesn't have no choice to choose imperfect beings." That's blasphemy what this guy said. Saying God has no choice is like saying God is not in control. God can change any person and any heart if He so chooses to.
The white promo in Evangelicalism bit lends some sort of possible explanation to something that has puzzled me since my misspent youth. In Corpus Christi, TX in the early '80s there was a rescue mission with a Mexican-American preacher who at one point in a sermon went on about how God liked and the Devil hated blonde hair and blue eyes. When this preacher was Mexican-American with Aztec physical features. It kind of creeped me out that he seemed to regard me in a more positive light simply because I had yellow-blonde hair at the time and blue to blue-green eyes. And there I was a 21 year old homeless guy sowing my wild oats in the worst ways possible.
I had a guy from Uganda tell me that people from the West just have better solutions for the problems in Africa than Africans and that god clearly loves the US more, as it is more prosperous. Freaked me out and I ended the friendship after that because that sounded like a crazy person to me.
"Jesus was crucified by a coalition of political-religious conservatives (the Pharisees) and political-religious liberals (the Sadducees), working through the secular government (the Roman Empire). All political parties and systems are a mixed bag of good and evil principles, whereas the kingdom of Christ is composed only of good principles that arise out of God’s indiscriminate love for all people. As a follower of Jesus, therefore, I cannot be loyal to any one political party, but rather must affirm true principles wherever they may be found regardless of political party. I must subscribe to the good principles that are present on the conservative end of the spectrum and to the good principles that are on the liberal end of the spectrum. And that makes me a political freak, or at least a political anomaly, in a world of frenzied political hate." End Quote. [I did not originate these thoughts, nor does anyone actually have any good thoughts. For all GOOD thoughts originate from God in Christ Jesus].
I think 🤔 it’s rather telling that this White panel of scholars appropriate the word Macho and use it as a Pejorative without understanding the meaning or the culture. Machismo/Marianismo are a duality. Machismo is the masculine, Marianismo the feminine. You can’t have one with out the other. The dynamics don’t apply to white males, or white females in the Christian church. White people in the Christian church are not more sexist then racist. They are white supremest and you have a different patristical structure based in race, Genocide and slavery. Machismo in the Latin tradition has to do with Males doing back breaking labor. And the female taking care of house hold. This is a choice. As a women you don’t have to participate. You can be un wed and have to provide for your self. And these discussion about toxic masculinity are white liberal women lying and putting all the blame for racism sorely on the white man and other men of other ethnic backgrounds. No! White women in America like to play the victim. They are beneficiaries of White supremacy. In America White feminism isn’t about white women’s freedom it’s a fight over who holds the whip of white supremacy.
Actually in America feminists play the woke card... as in who can seem more inclusive and degenerate to prove they AREN'T from a traditional Western, white culture. You have that a bit backwards. Either way i think you took the race bait sadly.

@Lawrence Carlson Sanskrit? Hebrew and Koine Greek. Yes, something is always lost in translation, but it is very elitist to claim that in order to get to the true Gospel one must have a better mastery of the ancient tongues (which for the Gospel is Koine Greek) than the professional team of translators that worked on each translation. It also goes against that egalitarian Acts ethos of going out to all the nations and preaching to them in their own tongues, peasant and wealthy alike.
Christianity is full of falsehoods etc. but add to that the absurd claims and outright nonsense coming from the evangelical crazies and we have a very dire and dangerous situation in the US. Only in America would you see a bumper sticker reading "God, Guns, and Guts" displayed as a statement of faith. The "Christian" right twists the words of Christ beyond all recognition, when it mentions them at all. Jesus still weeps.

@@chrisccc22 Yes of course you are right, I was focused on the evolution of the written text which captures the oral tradition, the biblical text which many worship almost as much as they worship God. I think that unfortunately they have the need for certitude, not faith, and so the very idea that the scriptures might not be infallible is anathema to them. I am comfortable with mystery and human limitations in spiritual wisdom recognizing that the overarching message of God is displayed throughout scripture without the need of insisting on the infallibility of each word. I think it is a failing of all religions that our human ego insists that its particular grasp of God is the correct one and all the others are, to put it diplomatically, less enlightened.
In the USA there was ALWAYS a split between those who interpreted the Bible literally and those that didn’t. Remember Jefferson cut up the Gospels taking out all superstitions. And Adams thought the Hindu Upanishads revealed a truth of the ultimate God better than the Bible did. The Early Abolitionists actually did not believe Paul was the word of God. That’s why they fought against slavery. They believed Jesus was. But even the most popular early Church father of 200AD said that literalist interpretation was childish, Origen of Alexandria. Origen was popularized by Erasmus in the 1530‘s. In the late 1900‘s Rev. Robert Rauschenbush wrote an essay that Bible inerrancy was not tenable. And Swami Vivekanda came to the USA around the same time calling for the end to religious bigotry. The mainline Churches went more in that direction of accepting science, social gospel, historical critical, and ending Christian chauvinism. While the fundamentalist had a complete backlash. They even called it the Hinduization of Christianity, because of Vivekananda’s popularity. But there were previous Christians who said the same, for example William Blake.

Church and State (are supposed to) are to stay separate. All those faithful patriots forget it's explicitly stated to be so. I thought Mr. Jesus was a peaceful and inclusive fellow that followed the law and observances of Judaism who had a message for the masses of his time. Admittedly I don't know much about His message but I've never heard anything about voting for a specific president, congressman, senator or local council member, in it. It seems antithetical to his over all mind frame to be voting for shady people who get a pass on being moral for being "blue" or "red" if it furthers the dissemination of His message. I also thought the only "hero" Christians have is Jesus. This interpretation of His message is very hypocritical and confusing to a guy like me whom has a limited understanding of it. I'll have to read what dude said. Maybe I'm missing something. Just saying
True. Jesus was intensly apolitical, in fact he wanted his teaching divested from the state (except where the state was also the religion due to Judaisms organisation such as the Themple being inhabited by merchants who he then famously did the only militant act he ever did against when he litteraly made a whip and forced them out of the temple for daring to do business in the house of god). Otherwise he's pacifist almost. Any instructions to fights is to not fight and love your oponent. It's....not like the evangelicals message
It's very diametricaly opposed to the masculinity they aspouse. Doing business with much profit is never praised and always side-eyed at best by Jesus (occationaly going so far as to say sooner will a camel go through a needls hole then a rich person going to paradise). It's definetly not a capitalist your wealth makes you message. Then he teaches woman with men, with a large amount of people constantly following him who he teaches. Then he heales the sick and praises people who care for the sick. He basically asks his followers for a very self-less, generous life of compassion to fellow humans. It's like 180 degree from Trumps version. I am a radical feminist, if men where like Jesus I would support masculinity lol. I am not even a christian, just read the Bible.
There's also no female submission. The text that is cited is an anti-submission doctrine actually. It states that as christ as lead the church so his followers should lead there families by the power of example not force. That spouses should love eachother and that woman should submitt to men as men should also submitt to woman. It's equality, but with an emphasis of leading by example for men to a slight degree. I went to Calvin and there was a strain of Amway / Reaganism there in the mid 1980s. I can remember coming across a Conservative Digest article in college and thinking that they had little power and influence. Then, I was in Georgia during the Gingrich years in the 1990s. I saw how deluded the North Fulton / East Cobb hedonism was with a Christian facade. For such nice looking communities to drive through (all creature comforts imaginable), the sense of privilege and strong personalities were hard to ignore. I started to worry. None of that compared to this recent toxic strain that evolved from early Fox "News" to Trumpism, years of reinforcement of false narratives, Machiavellian strategies, and the re-victimization of victims. *Don’t stand for Slavery, like bible does* In Galatians 3:28, Paul starts by implying that there is no distinction under Jesus between free people and slaves, men and women, etc, but the passage continues into chapter 4, where Paul minimizes the suffering of slaves by saying child heirs are just like slaves, and by 4:24 he is saying that birth into slavery is part of the covenant of Mt Sinai. In Galatians 4:28-31, Paul endorses *not* treating slaves well and makes the slaves metaphorically ungodly; a separate, destitute class (which contradicts his earlier child-heirs-are-slaves claim). 1 Corinthians 7:17-24 “Were you a slave when you were called? ... each person should remain in the situation they were in when they were called.” ... and *God assigned slavery to them (v **7:17**)* Philemon 1:9 and 13, Paul uses slavery as a metaphor for adherence to Jesus. In this passage, Paul implicitly upholds the institution of slavery, even tho Paul expresses a wish that a specific slave, Onesimus, could be free. Paul never mentions Onesimus’ wishes. So whatever Paul meant by loving Onesimus, it did not include putting Onesimus’ freedom above Philemon’s “property rights” to Onesimus. Colossians 4:1 again compares slavery to a relationship with god, even as it tells slave masters to treat their slaves “justly and fairly”... thus confirming their rights to own humans. It also means that the author thought slavery could be just and fair. Matthew 24:45-51 is pro-slavery. It is an analogy between a slave master and god/Jesus as judges over the slaves. The slave master is righteous and has the authority to judge the fate of the slave. The bad slave is first bad because he doesn’t fear the return of the master (Jesus). So Matthew is saying approvingly that Jesus is like a slave master and _vice versa._ Luke 12:37-48 Likens Jesus-Christian relationship to master-servant and *approvingly mentions beating servants.* Ephesians 6:5-9 instructs servants to obey and treat their masters as they would Christ and the masters to treat slaves “well”, an oxymoron, again presenting the master-slave relationship as something holy. 1 Timothy 6:1 It would be *blasphemy* (“so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered”) for slaves *not* to count their masters as worthy of all honor/wealth. Timothy is saying *Christian teaching requires slaves to honor their masters.* He is also saying that not honoring a master is a slander to god’s name, which required death by stoning per Leviticus 24:16 and was one of the Ten Commandments. *Timothy is saying that slavery is a necessary part of basic morality.* (End Slavery is holy) John 8:35 a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. Bible: How slaves should behave and masters should treat them: Galatians 4:30 But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” (Genesis 21:30) 1 Peter 2:18 servants (oiketai) should submit even to unreasonable masters. There is no command here to not be a master, let alone an unreasonable one. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. So righteousness, even moral perfection includes permission to own slaves, according to Christian scripture 😢

thought I'd seen perverse mockery of the Bible exhausted when I read some of the 19th Century attempts to employ scripture in defence of the "peculiar institution". This ramble however makes that look like a weak joke. To claim another person as a slave, one must do two things: deny that person human autonomy, and claim to be able to make property of the Imago Dei. So according to what you've said, blaspheming Christian faith, is the premise of Christian faith. I really cannot be bothered to straighten out this parody, perverse statement by perverse statement, that would take more time than I care to spend. Instead, I'll simply ask some questions of your concepts. If Christians are slaves of God, how can they own slaves? Slave owning slaves? Please explain? If slavery is holy and part of Christian moral perfection, what happens to the Great Commission? How can the Gospel be imparted to slaves? Wouldn't (as you yourself perversely pointed out without reflection) that require serving two masters? What happens to the Christian concepts of Grace, the free gift freely given, freely accepted? What happens to redemption in Christ, which is freedom from slavery to the curse of sin and death? I'd be interested to hear how you square your demoniacally twisted ramble.

9:25 going from an educated, truly christian man in the Whitehouse, to Trump... Truly christian? One doesn't even need to be a religious person to find both presidents completely undesirable. Thomas Sowell, noted economist, non-religious as far as I know, considers Obama and Trump the two worst presidents since WW2, if not since WW1. And for different reasons, of course.

The most famous theologian of 200 AD Origen of Alexandria said the Bible was NOT literal but allegorical, and he criticized Christian literalists of his day. But the Bible is not a Santa Claus story. The way the Gospel is written is mythic. But an important myth. Which reveals a great truth. Origen also believed that Jesus revealed himself in different ways to different people depending on their spiritual development. I don’t take the Bible literally, but I don’t get so upset by literalists. What really matters is understanding the spiritual language. But I often criticize literalists for holding to the symbols as if they were the ultimate, and I often criticize atheists for dismissing the importance of the spirit. The rationally deductive person will only know a material truth, and ignore spiritual truth.

Worst of all, he signed an executive order declaring Gay marriage as the Law…..without taking a vote so the people could chime in. This was Executive overreach! If he allowed the PEOPLE to vote I would have more respect for him. Beth Moore is viewed as a clown-world type of teacher/evangelist, not anyone that had much influence in the Christian world. So is it safe to assume people on the Left have no standards either with hypocrisy to boot? Snide comments about Obama and his Presidency, railing against Democrats and their unGodly policies were coming from the pulpit.

Claiming that “As a Christian I think that truth is important.”
Do you really think that because you’re a Christian, truth is important.
The truth doesn’t care if you’re a Christian. The irony burns. As a Christian you must have faith, which is believing or accepting something without evidence.
That trait is not exclusive to Christians.
Faith requires the absence of critical thought and complete disregard for truth.

Years ago, on CSPAN, I saw a conversation between Al Sharpton and a Republican political strategist (or something)...at some point Sharpton said something like 'god said, (insert bible verse)'...I can't remember the verse but it was something about _caring for the needy_ or _it's hard for a rich man to enter heaven_
I just remember it was some quote/verse related to money/wealth...and how that [money/material things] shouldn't be a Christian's priority.
Like I said, Al started the comment with 'god said...'
The Republican's immediate reply was: "Not my god."
When I heard it it always made me wonder what do Conservative Christians really believe...
Yet Sharpton is wealthy.
@@stanlee2589 And? What does that have to do with a Republican saying he doesn't worship the god of Abraham?

It really is noteworthy that fundamental differences in theological interpretations between Evangelical sects aren't necessarily enough to make enemies of others within the overall Evangelical community, but different social/political/economic philosophical orientations are.
Not to mention the fact that the social/political/economic stands they take further alienate them from the very people that Jesus, the author of their faith, commissioned them to reach out to.

What are the definitions of "evangelical" from the different eras of history?
I cannot answer that, but I think it helps to see it as a "revival" kind of Protestantism. Perhaps beginning with types like Jonathan Edwards in the US (a period called "The Great Awakening,") Strengthened by the formulaic gospel of Billy Graham in the 1950's.
Preaching about a fiery hell provided a lot of power over the masses (later used for political purposes)
Another influence was REACTIONARY Christianity protesting MODERNITY. Modern theology here is exemplified by movements like the Second Vatican, German Liberal Theology and Liberation Theology (in poor countries). The Evangelicals thought the gospels should NOT be "modernized" or confused with "Godless Socialism" (and therefore objected to caring for the poor through governmental "programs of social uplift" as Martin Luther King called it.) The Soviet Union championed the poor working classes and international Socialism, so the evangelicals then, stood for "the opposite," namely Americanism, Nationalism and Capitalism (they had to shoehorn in Christian verses to make it work)
Christianization and politicization of ABORTION (among Protestants) in the 1970's is also part of this Evangelical political movement of today.
Note:
Here in Norway we tend to separate between "Evangelic" (just normal Protestants) and "Evangelical" (firebrand conservative Christians). I hope that helps ..
One can build a social justice movement around the energy of hate. This is easily
understood and there's nothing particularly new about it. What Jesus does is build a social
justice movement around the energy of love (Galatians 5:6), love for God, neighbor, and even enemy.
Excellent discussion on an incredibly important subject. Thank you for putting this out here!

In America White feminism isn’t about white women’s freedom it’s a fight over who holds the whip of white supremacy.

*Don’t stand for Slavery, like bible does*
In Galatians 3:28, Paul starts by implying that there is no distinction under Jesus between free people and slaves, men and women, etc, but the passage continues into chapter 4, where Paul minimizes the suffering of slaves by saying child heirs are just like slaves, and by 4:24 he is saying that birth into slavery is part of the covenant of Mt Sinai. In Galatians 4:28-31, Paul endorses *not* treating slaves well and makes the slaves metaphorically ungodly; a separate, destitute class (which contradicts his earlier child-heirs-are-slaves claim).
1 Corinthians 7:17-24
“Were you a slave when you were called? ... each person should remain in the situation they were in when they were called.” ... and *God assigned slavery to them (v **7:17**)*
Philemon 1:9 and 13, Paul uses slavery as a metaphor for adherence to Jesus.
So Matthew is saying approvingly that Jesus is like a slave master and _vice versa._
Luke 12:37-48 Likens Jesus-Christian relationship to master-servant and *approvingly mentions beating servants.*
Ephesians 6:5-9 instructs servants to obey and treat their masters as they would Christ and the masters to treat slaves “well”, an oxymoron, again presenting the master-slave relationship as something holy.
*Timothy is saying that slavery is a necessary part of basic morality.*
(End Slavery is holy)
John 8:35
a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
Bible: How slaves should behave and masters should treat them:
Galatians 4:30
But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” (Genesis 21:30)
1 Peter 2:18 servants (oiketai) should submit even to unreasonable masters.
There is no command here to not be a master, let alone an unreasonable one.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Origen also believed that Jesus revealed himself in different ways to different people depending on their spiritual development.
I don’t take the Bible literally, but I don’t get so upset by literalists. What really matters is understanding the spiritual language.
