    What I found chilling was that very last shot of the two cops. The way they just accepted the ending of the show, this masterpiece of reality TV, and simply flick the channel to see what else is on. Truman has spent his whole life being watched by the world, and it's over just like that. Such a fantastic film

      I think that's a critique to modern TV consumerism: Truman is just intertaiment after all and, once this "product" is used and finished, something new has to be find simply by moving to another channel.

    One thing I noticed, at 0:37
    When Christoff said that he watched Truman taking his first steps, Truman looked down. Not because he is touched by Christoff's "love", but because he figured that his life was manipulated and robbed away from him ever since he took those first steps. That realization broke him.

      This scene perfectly shows Christophs view of Truman: Truman is a pet for him. A very lucrative pet of course, but still he is convinced that he provides the best possible world him. And that's a key to every good villain: Knowing that they could be wrong, but still holding on to their delusions - and the violence they're imposing on their own conscience goes hand in hand with the violence against the world.

    • @_LilRascal_
      @_LilRascal_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +107

      siopao2001 From what I read, Christoff didn’t have a nice childhood. So creating this perfect world for Truman is his sort of twisted gift, while also putting himself in complete control, a true God complex. I believe Christoff genuinely loves Truman, and in his own warped way he has given Truman a perfect life. A hot wife, successful career no matter what he does, a beautiful house, friends, etc. Seahaven literally revolves around Truman. But Truman doesn’t want perfection, he wants freedom, flaws and all. I don’t think Christoff was all that devastated at losing his cash cow. I think he was heartbroken in that Truman rejected his “perfection”, the only thing Christoff ever sought. Ed Harris is amazing

      We all live like that;we are bound to the laws of the universe. We are in control of how we choose to follow, bend or break those laws and enjoy/suffer the consequence, in the big scheme of things.. But Truman was not in the big scheme. He was kept away from it-every choice he made was through the power of suggestion. The only thing he could choose was to step out of it. Which to me symbolizes self-euthanasia. It's like with stalking: it stops when tne perp or the victim dies.

    • @Dr.TJ_Eckleburg
      @Dr.TJ_Eckleburg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +531

      Yeah in-universe they said he was the first baby ever legally adopted by a corporation. They probably had a ton of lawyers working basically 24/7 to keep the show going, because we do see that there's a fairly sizeable movement of people who believe what the show is doing is wrong and would have likely filed many lawsuits against the network over the years.
      I can see it being permitted to carry on as long as Truman appears happy with his life -- no damages, no harm generally being a legal standard. The network would probably argue that Truman is being well cared-for and has a happier life than most. Of course the fact that he's essentially imprisoned is fundamentally harmful even if he's unaware of his imprisonment, but I guess in the movie universe the lawyers managed to hold off that argument somehow.
      Surely once Truman leaves the studio he'll have some very serious compensation coming to him, and yes, at least the threat of a lawsuit, which would realistically be enough to make the network settle with him for a huge sum regardless. I would also imagine that the network would probably want to stay on Truman's good side as much as possible after his departure, as the follow up interviews and retrospectives would be very lucrative for them as well, now that their main cash cow is gone.

Note he says the "episode" where he lost his first tooth. Not the moment, not the time; the "episode". Truman was just a figure in a show to him, a figure and a show he could manipulate like God for ratings and acclaim. If you recall that this show is partly a commentary on God's relationship with man, it'll make you understand how God is basically just ego for control. Reportedly, many of those afflicted have specifically mentioned the film while in therapy. More recently, in Sept. 16, 2013, the detailed account of one Ohio student who suffered for years from the Truman-Show delusion is documented in the New Yorker magazine article, "Unreality Star", by Andrew Marantz.

In this case imo religion is the topic: the last resource to induce us to fear and to search for a senseless relief, when nothing else has convinced us. The fact that his name's Christoff and speak from the sun between clouds (actually, when he starts talking to Truman he says: "I'm the creator... of a TV show that blahblah") are pretty symbolic of that.

    The Truman Show was a great movie for a lot of reasons. A TV Show watched by the whole World about one man on a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year Big Brother. It was a great idea but also it showed the World that Jim Carrey was a much better actor than we gave him credit for. This end scene is kind of sad because Truman now knows that his whole life has been a lie. He's crashed into the wall aboard his ship and now he wants to leave. Ed Harris was brilliant as Christof and Oscar nominated for the role. He's telling him how much he knows about him, and has looked after him since he's been in Seahaven and why he wants him to stay. But Truman doesn't want to be there anymore and leaves with his final line. In case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight! Then he simply walks out the door.

    0:18 one thing I absolutely love about this scene is the fact you can’t tell whether or not christoff is just trying to manipulate Truman or if he’s so mentally insane that he truly believes that he’s given Truman a good life.

  • @mrmesmerizer855
    @mrmesmerizer855 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I really like how the creator, speaks to Truman like a father. "I was there for..." having a repeatitive quality, but his overbaringness as a father is emphasised by the fact that he literally bears over Truman, his whole life.

    • @Awsome2464
      @Awsome2464 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to mention he has a Freudian slip when he refers to Truman losing his tooth as an "episode". He didn't see Truman as a person, only as a star of a show.

  • @Meesterlijker
    @Meesterlijker 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Such a powerful scene, Amazing acting from all characters and great lines being said. It's in the little things: the fact that you're looking at Truman from above and only seeing his crown makes it so you can almost feel his vulnerability, whereas the Creator is enormous and you can see every emotion on his face and in his voice. The soft yet intense music completes it. Kudos to Peter Weir for a great, great scene.

    One of the best movie scenes preformed. Art in motion, the way the actors converse is real tense, the way the emotions rush through your head makes you feel for Truman, such a brilliant film that couldent be played by anyone better,the lines said by actors are deep and the scenes where you know he’s clueless just put so much meaning into the movie, absolutely amazing film and I recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it to go watch it.

    • @Wabbbitt
      @Wabbbitt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no background music on the scene shown, absolute perfection, knowing he is alone where he is but at he same time together makes your head rush with emotions and really drills in the idea that Truman is really thinking about his decision.

  • @thatsojordy

    I like this ending and the original ending as well. In the original ending, Truman discovered the soundstage and found out that there was a tour for his show. He learned that there was merchandise and things of that nature and when he sees the moon for the first time it almost brings him to tears. He sees Hollywood and when he confronts the creator of the show he desperately asks if anything in his life was real. Truman also almost pushes him off a roof. Finally we see that Truman and Sylvia are married with a daughter and are living their lives on a beach while there is a new TV show about a baby named Zoe, thus coming full circle with a new star/show.

  • @hotelmario510

    Love that final moment of him stepping literally into the darkness. The great unknown. The undiscovered country. And with a smile on his face. We can read it literally - as Truman undergoing a major change, a "death" in the sense of the Tarot card. But we can also read it allegorically. It's the "death" of Truman, that is, Truman the character. He steps across the threshold and is dissolved. He emerges as something new, something no longer Truman. He accepts it with grace. One of my favourite movie endings of all time.

Not to mention none of the stuff on the show set look like the real world. Like perfect houses with perfect neighbors and perfect buildings with perfect streets surrounding it. Everything would be mind blowing to him.
