After earning more than $300k a year for years and now being told I'll be laid off in a few months, trying to find another job feels impossible. Some developer jobs are even being advertised for $50k and $70k-no joke! It’s as if companies are testing how low they can go, and soon we might be treated like just another trade job.
can still get those offers at FAANG and i even hear pay at most companies is back to where it always was, keep your head up bro it’s right around the corner
"Tech bro" has a kind of more particular meaning now. Fellow software engineers can recognize these people - bragging about how much money they make and how tech is better than finance now, ranting about how homeless people need to be genocided, dismissing the opinions of any non-dev as useless ("what do you mean UX or product strategy matters i'm buliding here brah i'm fucking BUILDING") and generally just vastly underestimating the actual complexity and effort that's required to create something truly great.
The layoffs of 2023 and even now are literally happening because companies admitted they overhired. These are the employees that upskilled, worked hard, all that jazz that tech TH-camrs love to preach to actual tech workers who got laid off through no fault of their own. And at 18:20, the point the video was making is that tech bros gave landlords an excuse to charge high rents so that it became difficult for non tech people living in NY. Sorry, but this video feels hilariously out of touch.
Your channel is easily my favorite. Can you make a video on what to do if you're a computer science graduate that didn't do an internship, and is now 2 years removed from school without their first job. It's tough. Thank you legend!
I like your commentary gents, I work in tech too. Just one thing though, I think when the commentator was speaking about Monopolies, he was referring to the natural monopolies these companies created because of patents and first mover advantage. For example, every computer in the world is pre-installed with Microsoft unless its's a Mac, or a dev who just likes using Linux. All android phones have Google products pre-installed etc., before all these court cases came through, the advancements such tech companies made naturally limited competition. There were very few viable alternatives that could spawn out and compete against them at the same scale.
"multi millions by age 30" who? where? maybe hedgefund or startup (thats like 100 successful people) but noone is getting multi millions by 30, maybe 1 million after taxes at best but most top earners are older.
I'm just getting into the industry as a product designer with a couple real projects under my belt, and I don't hear anything from junior positions. Mid to senior position roles always decline within a couple days 😅
Cool video, I think the format and attention spans don't allow for a proper time frame and for less stereotypes. I think the video is correct about over promising and under delivering, no offence meant.

pretty low quality video to be honest. You just doing the low effort commenting type of video on a channel that actually knows a lot more than you think they do. Your contributions are pretty poor and I'm not sure you really understand the tech landscape and all the hidden forces behind the industry like you think you do. (the blietzscaling point for example... you seemed surprised and didn't really understand why that's a thing in the industry). Everytime you tried to disprove their arguments or claims, you weren't discerning the forest from the trees and getting bogged down on some little detail you tried to defend which had nothing to do with the main argument being told. Most notably, I think you both need to pull your head out of wherever it is and realize that working at the big tech companies is not nearly as glamorous or that people from the outside don't see you with the respect and admiration you may think they do. Tech bro is not exactly a positive term nowadays.

$300k a month should have set you up for life within a year.
Basically it. 100K a year good for me. With gravy on the side so if I lose it got my side income to keep me going. Life sucks these days.

2:33 Microsoft was not a startup in 1999.

rent in desirable cities will always increase, maybe tech bros exasperated the problem but it was inevitable

with stock growth, very achievable at FAANG or equivalent companies
Someone who already has the development skillset and income to go with it could feasibly achieve that with a bit of financial education
I have a feeling it's the startup era now
so risky

Hey Namanh, have you ever thought of changing careers? Is the industry getting to that point? Kind of what happened in 2008?
