I went through the entire hiring process: background check, physical exam, picking up equipment, etc. Then, the business day before I was supposed to start, I got an email saying my offer was rescinded due to budget considerations, but they told me I'd be prioritized for the next season. To top it off, I got an email the following week (while failing my Roblox OA) saying they'd found a new team for me and were ready to extend the offer again. All I had to do was wait for Monday orientation. Then, on Friday, the same thing happened… I got a call saying the new department's budget had been cut, and they were rescinding my offer again. They really doubled down on the trauma.

The recruiter kept insisting, so I decided to go through the process. They kept extending the number of interviews. Eventually, I got an offer and that weekend I was told they need to call me on Monday. They told me they decided to rescind my offer due to not being able to onboard well because of covid. I asked for more details and was told it was my "years of experience" which they were initially fine with.

That exact same thing happened to me a month ago. Did the interview, killed it, got a follow up call and all looking good. And then next thing I know the main Director of their team calls me and says we were really impressed during your interview. So impressed in fact I don't think it's going to work out. Your skills are beyond this position and you wouldn't be challenged and you would be bored. So we have decided to go with somebody else less qualified. I was fully willing to give them my skills for what they were paying. And they would rather pay the same for somebody who doesn't know the job. 😅
Bruh the tech market is rough right now. Sucks your offer got rescinded. I'm also in the job hunt and man its terrible. I would get interviews left and right back in 2022 but now in 2024 I'm getting way less interviews. I'm also looking for remote only and hybrid only if 20-30 minutes away. I wish hybrid was optional to be honest since I would get my work done before 5 and you get shamed if you leave before 5 at least how it was before the pandemic. I get hybrid make sense for you since you live in Manhattan and its close by commute. I heard people take hour commute from Long Island, NJ and Connecticut one way and that sounds terrible.
Similar stuff happened to me with Canonical. I went through multiple interview stages: wrote a 3-page response to background questions, did a coding test, did a design test and attended 3 interviews over the course of a week. After each stage, I was told that I had done well and was selected to proceed to the next stage. The entire process took 2 MONTHS! And then they reject me.
Asana has joined my list of companies that I used to dream of working for (10 years ago while I was in Japan playing with Angular JS and Angular 2 Beta) but the hype is gone and the company is relying too much on its past glory. I'm not sure what you wanted to achieve there that has not already been done. But I guess salary and food are more important than an interesting tech stack and projects. My list includes Blizzard (I wanted to work on Starcraft 2 when I was a teenager but now I hate this company and every single spin off like Frost Giant).
200 junior/entry level jobs that i've applied to in the last 2 months. No bites yet. It honestly scares me the seeming depth of that interview because i would definitely have made my fair share of errors..but here's to hope that those who stick it out will be rewarded
Very similar situation happened to me at asana!! I aced all the interviews the recruiter told me everyone loved me but they didn't have a role for me anymore...
You be surprised this happens all the time you not the only one... 7 years ago this happened to me at a company I interviewed at an it was a mid level dev position but because they said I was at a senior level I couldn't get the mid level position.... and I'm like bro it's ok it's a $10,000 difference I don't care and they were like "No we usually like to pay our developers according to their level".... I'm like SMFH
Hey, silver lining - at least they told you that you're basically a senior dev, so in the future when you're applying to other roles you can apply to the more senior ones knowing that you're good enough, and demand the equivalent salary. Actually kind of wholesome cause most employers would LOVE for you to think you're worse than you actually are so they can pay you less. It does suck that they would pass up on a great candidate (just make an extra position if you find someone that's that good!) but outside of that, I feel like they did you a bit of favor with that.
it's tough here. I was rejected before because I will be bored on the job, or I'm too much in one field and they want to have very specific other experience, or I have a PhD and too academic for job interviews.
I had a similar experience with a top product based ecom companies in India. Completed 5 rounds of technical interview and then 1 HR round, Then salary discussion. And then documents were shared. Then the HR ghosted me for 3 weeks and finally after my multiple phone calls , informed that offer is on hold due to organisation restructuring. 🤷 Painful to wait for 1 month, just to hear this.
If you're hired at a lower position, there is a risk of you leaving them when you find something that matches your level. That's the reason I can think of why they rejected you. Sucks tho.
whole video just seemed so stressful, doesn't it bother you that there's that many steps? I get that the pay and benefits are great...but it's like they make you turn into a hamster in a rube goldberg machine to get all of that, and in the end there might not even be a reward that was promised, kinda like how they took the offer away from you.
@@namanhkapur I had a similar situation play out, got an offer and it was rescinded. Back to square one, but it's going to work out and I'm at least wiser to how crappy this industry can be sometimes.
I think this ''weird situation" is pretty common in the workplace They call it "over-qualified" They are not seeking for the job, instead, they're finding someone who's ok for this job And your abilities surpassed their expectations and in fact over-qualification is the insecurity for those seniors (In most case the good workers would seek for another role within a short period of time) they don't want someone who are too good for the role If there's a spectrum of 1-100, they're looking for someone who is like 65-75 and a bit higher In simple words, they don't want someone who's good, because they assume that the good ones would leave the company very quick And that's their evaluation for the risk of employing the great candidates, and most of the employers or seniors still take this standard as a guide
@@namanhkapur Your case is like common, but I'd say you told too much to your employers during your interview So I'd say try not to stand out too much in the interview Not always, but the scale of the company usually tells, find some reviews of that companies also would help you to evaluate their attitude towards their orientation of candidates choosing (of course you should know a bit about the company before you go to their invitations) To someone who are not too clear about the job market Possessing a master degree after a bachelor degree is common, but they also prefer someone with more job experience instead of academic papers That's why we sometimes see a PhD candidates don't get a job interview You either hide your highest degree record, or go to a really great company for an interview. Don't see an in between.
Even me I have been ghosted with a certain company in my city , and i personally didnt reach out to them because I just concluded maybe that is not the place i would like to work in (Because i always think that if they need me in their team then they will reach out).
my advice to swe going foward, get into a domain and become an expert. general swe market is crazy competitive. Get into something like healthcare cancer or some corner of financial /quant engineering to differentiate yourself. Otherwise u r competing with literally everyone that can code worldwide
Question. I want to be like you in the future. I’m currently a junior engineer trying to make Yt videos, but also looking for another role. You have a successful channel, ie a user base of dedicated potential customers who WANT to support you, and obviously you have the engineering talent. Why not make your own product? You can build in public, receive detailed feedback, and also never have to deal with this bs. Plus imo way more fun. I would assume you generate enough money from this channel to do that? Plus you got the location
No matter how bad your situation is, I'd say some people are still worse off. God, I would love to have your skill as a software engineer, so I can already build my startups but being poor and not a software engineer, I can't build them. Even submitting an idea to incubator is not acceptable today, i need at least an MVP. I would really prefer that you just build your own startup, you don't need these companies. I wish you to have your own successful company instead.
Ahh the classic NYC attrition risk, Asana knew you were definitely overqualified and the city has too much opportunity for you to find a better job with better pay. If you took a lower position , you will probably jump ship before you actually make an impact in the company.
I could understand it if it was a small company that really has to look at each dime and they didn't want to invest into a candidate that will leave soon-ish because of overqualification/better salary elsewhere. But such a big company, if they think you're L5, they can just easily pay you L5 salary. wtf lol
Nah nah NAH NAH “You did too well we regret to inform you that we could not give you an offer…” If that was deadasss I've lost hope for the tech industry
your dream company from the sounds of it is a bottom of the barrle pos place to work and probably has some messed up toxic culture. be glad you didn't end up working there. it sucks when you're looking for a job, stay postive and always know you self worth.
Am I the only one who thinks these companies are becoming ridiculous with their interviews? Asana? Multiple rounds of technical interviews and so on? What the hell is going on? Not only that, but after all the rounds of interview they also had the guts to tell you "oh btw you are too good to work this position" Are they even serious?
I don't like people like you who I consider self centered and amoral. But I have to say you tell a pretty engaging story. I started out hate watching and then I was rooting for you.

I heard people take hour commute from Long Island, NJ and Connecticut one way and that sounds terrible.
yeah hybrid from the burbs is insane
Hopefully you landed something since then since that was a year ago. Also, maybe engineering isn’t your calling. Your acting / storytelling is great !
Thanks for the kind words! Coming soon!
You’re so right, I was in it for the perks - a gaming company would be lit but they don’t pay well except for Valve apparently they’re a secret club
Ghosting should honestly be illegal no really, it is so disrespectful, a automated answer at least makes you know for you to go look elsewhere.
I'm like SMFH
hate that
Thanks for sharing. I feel less of a PoS now
gotchu homie
Hey, silver lining - at least they told you that you're basically a senior dev, so in the future when you're applying to other roles you can apply to the more senior ones knowing that you're good enough, and demand the equivalent salary. Actually kind of wholesome cause most employers would LOVE for you to think you're worse than you actually are so they can pay you less. It does suck that they would pass up on a great candidate (just make an extra position if you find someone that's that good!) but outside of that, I feel like they did you a bit of favor with that.
Damn that's brutal, the market is fr cooked. Stay Positive though !
we roasting out here
That's messed up, I would be furious. At least you know you're competent but damn, that's such a shitty thing to happen.
crazy right
it's tough here. I was rejected before because I will be bored on the job, or I'm too much in one field and they want to have very specific other experience, or I have a PhD and too academic for job interviews.
Ah damn that’s brutal
I had a similar experience with a top product based ecom companies in India.
Completed 5 rounds of technical interview and then 1 HR round, Then salary discussion. And then documents were shared. Then the HR ghosted me for 3 weeks and finally after my multiple phone calls , informed that offer is on hold due to organisation restructuring. 🤷 Painful to wait for 1 month, just to hear this.
I have a hard time believing Namanh doesn’t get dates
If you're hired at a lower position, there is a risk of you leaving them when you find something that matches your level. That's the reason I can think of why they rejected you. Sucks tho.
5:05 , that's so real, I hate when my mom worries 😭
Indian moms love when the sons eat
whole video just seemed so stressful, doesn't it bother you that there's that many steps? I get that the pay and benefits are great...but it's like they make you turn into a hamster in a rube goldberg machine to get all of that, and in the end there might not even be a reward that was promised, kinda like how they took the offer away from you.
always been like this unfortunately
@@namanhkapur I had a similar situation play out, got an offer and it was rescinded. Back to square one, but it's going to work out and I'm at least wiser to how crappy this industry can be sometimes.
Priority queue and also something I haven't heard of called interval trees seem to be really popular interview questions right now.
yeah companies love them for some reason
The mental stress one goes through preparing for these interviews is crazy. They shouldn't let one go through these for nothing.
Facts
I think this ''weird situation" is pretty common in the workplace
They call it "over-qualified"
They are not seeking for the job, instead, they're finding someone who's ok for this job
And your abilities surpassed their expectations and in fact
over-qualification is the insecurity for those seniors (In most case the good workers would seek for another role within a short period of time)
they don't want someone who are too good for the role
If there's a spectrum of 1-100, they're looking for someone who is like 65-75 and a bit higher
In simple words, they don't want someone who's good, because they assume that the good ones would leave the company very quick
And that's their evaluation for the risk of employing the great candidates, and most of the employers or seniors still take this standard as a guide
Damn didn’t know this was a thing
@@namanhkapur Your case is like common, but I'd say you told too much to your employers during your interview
So I'd say try not to stand out too much in the interview
Not always, but the scale of the company usually tells, find some reviews of that companies also would help you to evaluate their attitude towards their orientation of candidates choosing
(of course you should know a bit about the company before you go to their invitations)
To someone who are not too clear about the job market
Possessing a master degree after a bachelor degree is common,
but they also prefer someone with more job experience instead of academic papers
That's why we sometimes see a PhD candidates don't get a job interview
You either hide your highest degree record,
or go to a really great company for an interview. Don't see an in between.
Definitely a manager felt threatened that you were a super high performing candidate for the role, that’s messed
Even me I have been ghosted with a certain company in my city , and i personally didnt reach out to them because I just concluded maybe that is not the place i would like to work in (Because i always think that if they need me in their team then they will reach out).
Always reach out!
my advice to swe going foward, get into a domain and become an expert. general swe market is crazy competitive. Get into something like healthcare cancer or some corner of financial /quant engineering to differentiate yourself. Otherwise u r competing with literally everyone that can code worldwide
I don't have money to sue - I get it. I volunteered to intern but they violated the labour laws and i was out within 3 days
Goddamn
There's something with this top k problem man, I was asked this in my coding round with Visa and needless to say I knocked it out of the park lol.
It’s a certified classic
In the comments last time you said you’d give us your LinkedIn story 🤔🤔🤔
Just you wait
“It’s not you, it’s me”
Man that is so anoying, hope your doing good. Chin up I am sure you will find something :)
Thanks!!
I will never apply to Asana lol thanks bro, and We all gonna make it homie
It's probably just because you do social media, lotsa liability bro
Lmao they got me
Only when you have fixed route you can take the board.
You are talking about this a whole year later? 🙄🙄🙄
Exposing them all
Im right where you are my dude. Everyone is ghosting. So many applications submitted.
It’s like dating in nyc
Why do you need referral? Problems with Indian employment market
12:41 Aced interview... What are they expecting from interview...? Reasons to not offer the position 😅
Building yourself is hard but you’re right it’s the dream one day, this youtube channel is like a baby company
That's fucked man. Stay Hard.
You're such a good story-teller! Have you thought of doing YT full-time (which seems like you're already doing...?)
thanks! that's the dream, but how do you think I get consistent viewership on my videos?
down to discuss more on insta! @namanhkapur
Ahh the classic NYC attrition risk, Asana knew you were definitely overqualified and the city has too much opportunity for you to find a better job with better pay. If you took a lower position , you will probably jump ship before you actually make an impact in the company.
why do you prefer NYC only? why not bay area?
love the energy in the city, worst case could go bay
@@namanhkapur After a few brutal winter in NYC, you will say worst case could go to NYC but love the vibe in Silicon Valley. lol. :)
@@adamchoe7328 Winter is NYC's best season tho lol
Correct - you are not his friend. If the only message you sent him is "can you get me a job", you are using him and frankly just being a douche bag.
i'd do the same for someone even if i don't know them that well
Dude you could have just left the “Object” with the security until you finish
lol true but I love it
I could understand it if it was a small company that really has to look at each dime and they didn't want to invest into a candidate that will leave soon-ish because of overqualification/better salary elsewhere. But such a big company, if they think you're L5, they can just easily pay you L5 salary. wtf lol
that's what i'm saying
Getting a job sounds brutal right now man..
Weird out here for sure
Nah nah NAH NAH
“You did too well we regret to inform you that we could not give you an offer…”
If that was deadasss I've lost hope for the tech industry
I don’t lie
Damn man i really want you to get a job asap.
Stay tuned!
I get irritated with the statement "You are overqualified for the role" :D Like I know but lowkey I know, so hire me already. hahaha
your dream company from the sounds of it is a bottom of the barrle pos place to work and probably has some messed up toxic culture. be glad you didn't end up working there. it sucks when you're looking for a job, stay postive and always know you self worth.
They’re dope but sometimes it’s not meant to be
they gave it to an internal
asana company❌ trolling company✅
sorry dude about my hate words about your dream company , that is reality
lmao love the emojis
The trend of people doxxing themselves after being rejected by companies is crazy.
Lmao
Am I the only one who thinks these companies are becoming ridiculous with their interviews? Asana? Multiple rounds of technical interviews and so on? What the hell is going on? Not only that, but after all the rounds of interview they also had the guts to tell you "oh btw you are too good to work this position" Are they even serious?
always been multiple rounds but yeah def a drag
Yeah saying you’re too good js a fake reason. Like you said they could’ve just hired you for that level.
I don't like people like you who I consider self centered and amoral. But I have to say you tell a pretty engaging story. I started out hate watching and then I was rooting for you.
Welp! Bolt did the same to me twice 🤣
Stay positive
always
I think it is because of your social media presence.
i scratch my head thinking what happened? should you show up in tux and bow tie next time? hmm.... mystery
yeah for real, need to suit up
