Guys like him are the reason why stem and compsci courses need more and seriously graded ethics course. Because guys like him run current tech world and make every app collect every single piece of data on you.

People are aware of ethics, good and bad, they have the ability to do that themselves. They don't want to. It is not in their interests. No amount of ethics courses changes that. The incentive is there and to someone's morals are on sale.

As someone who was surreptitiously surveilled with a keylogger by my ex husband, it is really toxic and scary when you realize you didn’t have the privacy you thought you did, despite not having done anything wrong. It’s a super creepy feeling.
Lmao when he said that "30% of them responded to my DM!!" the example on the screen was just "thank you" with a happy face. Wow, what a _harlot,_ being polite when she's complimented 💀 and the fact he didn't show any more screenshots makes me wonder how successful he really was.
Yeah she obviously is cheating if she leaves her house, DEFINITELY not going to a restaurant, grocery shopping, or even taking a walk. That would be ridiculous of her to do🙄
I work in IT, and using this kind of "life hack" never even crossed my mind. Technically I could install a key logger on every machine I get my hands on but I also realise the legal and ethical ramifications, which are quite severe. Like a locksmith probably shouldn't be robbing houses on the weekend. These guys know fully well that pulling something like this in a professional capacity would mean they're done, over, but because it's their personal life where people aren't all tech savvy, they feel completely confident they can get away with it. It is sociopathic behavior.
I personally feel like if my partner has so much anxiety and fear that I am cheating on him I don't care if it makes him feel better by keeping track of my movements and messages or whatever. I have nothing to hide and my partners peace of mind means everything to me. Trust is earned. Not the default. Too many people have a giant ego and too much pride and would take great offense or even dump their partner for so much as insinuating they don't trust them. I just don't get why anyone would make a big deal about it if they have nothing to hide. Doesn't your partners peace of mind mean more to you than your own pride? Clearly it's not personal and they have been hurt badly in the past or they wouldn't go to such extremes. You would think people would have a little empathy and understanding for the person they claim to love and are in a relationship with. Trust isn't automatically given as the default for some people. Some people have been hurt and suffered so much at the hands of someone who claimed to love them that they can't easily trust. Their trust must be earned and there's nothing wrong with that. Do I think it's a little unethical to spy on your partner? yes. Do I think the vast majority of those who do spy on their partners are bad people? no. I think they are hurt people.
@@WhitneyDahlin I think this is a very dangerous way of thinking. I don't think there's any reason why someone would need to track their partner. That kind of toxic behavior undermines their partner's independence and privacy and can quickly lead to control and abuse. If someone is so hurt that they feel the need to track their partner, then what they need to do is heal by learning how to cope with and manage their fear and anxiety themselves, and learning how to trust again. Tracking their partner is simply a way to avoid doing that healing work, and it's not going to help them. Instead, it will enable them to remain stuck in their pain and likely pass it on through their toxic behaviors. I have generalized anxiety disorder and complex PTSD as a result of past abuse in my relationships, which makes it very difficult for me to trust people and feel safe in my current relationships. However, it is absolutely not my partner's responsibility to manage my fear and anxiety for me or to cater to my inability to trust. It's my own responsibility to heal enough to a point where I can cope with and manage those feelings myself and where I'm able to trust my partner until they do something to lose that trust. You are free to let your partner track you if you choose, but I think it's highly problematic to suggest that we all should let our partners track us if we have nothing to hide, and it's especially problematic to suggest that letting our partners track us is a way to earn our partner's trust and provide them with peace of mind. It's not about pride -- it's about boundaries. Boundaries are extremely important for healthy relationships. I can have empathy for my partner and offer them reassurance, but I am not responsible for their feelings, especially at the cost of my boundaries. Being hurt is not an excuse to cross anyone's boundaries or to make anyone responsible for your peace of mind.
@@WhitneyDahlin But them having that much anxiety about it and not being able to trust you is the red flag, and the fact that they'd be willing to do all this to "expose" you is not a red flag anymore, it's outright manipulative and toxic. It's not about whether or not you have something to hide. Being this neurotic about keeping tabs on your partner isn't okay no matter what the reason or result is.
It's especially messed up because there are only two possibilities. One is that he'd make assumptions based on the private info he finds without ever giving you a chance to explain yourself. The other is that he'd confront you about it & expect an answer even if the actual explanation is none of his business & he's putting you on the spot by pressuring you to talk about something that maybe you don't wanna talk about. Some things are just genuinely no one's business but yours. Actually, there is a third possibility. That he's a violent psychopath who responds violently, with or without explaining or questioning.
He'd probably assume that all his guy friends had the same opinions + interests as himself and exclusively talk about either crypto or weirdo fringe shit 😭🤢

I see so many guys with that same mindset at my college, overblowing the programming feats they accomplish. The Dunning-Kruger effect really shines in the Computer Science industry lmao
to be fair to him, the worst thing he did was definitely admitting to stalking through their router, but goddamn that patrick bateman AI tiktok was fucking hilarious to watch. still creepy tho.
Most of what he does is straight up illegal... By having an account on a dating app you agree to a bunch of terms and services and there is probably one about infos having a personal use, but by showing them in a video (doxxing is illegal btw) he puts them to a public use, and it's illegal in most country I would love to see instragram or hinge lawyers see these videos
Depending on how he is hacking these apps they may not constitute a crime by the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (within the US); they may violate the TOS as you mentioned however that is not a crime. At most they may be able to send a cease and desist to him and ban his external IP address/account/email but that may not be worth their time and he can circumvent this with VPN, proxies, new email/account, etc . Instagram is also notorious for allowing its platform be used in crimes; you can literally find drug marketplaces and money laundering operations in the open. Wired did a good article just this month (August 2023 for future readers) about how these accounts openly advertise their crimes by paying Instagram to advertise their criminal enterprise. Meta literally doesn’t care. Now for Hinge one of the things he did was swipe on all the profiles instantly; that may be a violation of their TOS however you can probably do this with Python and an application called Wire Shark. Wire Shark uses a method callled packet sniffing; basically it analyzes the TCP/IP packets you send to Hinge’s server. Based on certain actions you do in the app different packets are captured and analyzed. He probably found out what the “right swipe” packet looks like and created a Python script to send that packet to that server every 3 seconds until there weren’t any more matches. Since he can configure the app to the people he wants he can make those changes on the app side. Sending a packet automatically without being there to swipe and not to be used in a DDoS attack I do not think inherently constitutes a crime under the CFBA. It is still creepy as all hell what the fuck he is doing but this type of behavior is probably not illegal; it is what he does next I think that it could constitute a crime depending on the jurisdiction and what he does next.

Hey Jarvis, not sure if the other comments have mentioned it, and I know you have a tech background too, but in many (maybe all?) states, it’s illegal to access a router or device like that without authorization. Sharing your wifi password is not authorization to access router settings, which is what you’d need to do to check if their device is connected. So it’s not just immoral, it’s *actually* illegal.

I'm so sick of people saying "if the roles were reversed". If a woman on TikTok showed how she stalks men through their WiFi, I know that everyone in the comments would be upset about it. Why? Because everyone knows that stalking and harassment is NOT okay, no matter the gender.
You get the same thing whenever there's a video of a woman assaulting a man in any way "if the roles were reversed". Like it's putting words in the mouths of people you've never met, in fact people whom you don't know.
actually if the roles were reversed thered be more people angry. Think about it, there are so many alpha male men's rights activists/lnceIs defending this guy specifically because he's a guy. Those types of guys hate women so they will ALWAYS be on the guy's side, whether or not the guy is in the wrong But when a woman does something bad, they dont have the same bIind support. Most feminists care about justice and they dont bIindIy defend women who are wrong, feminists are usually on the side if the victim regardless of gender. so these women who do bad things dont have support from the same type of sexist fanatics as guys who do something wrong. Basically, when a guy does something wrong, normal people condemn him but sexist MRAs and lnceIs defend him. But when a woman does something wrong, normal people condemn her AND the sexist MRAs also condemn her. Honestly a great example of this is the Johnny depo situation. Amber herd is obviously a horrible person, and literally EVERYONE is condemning her. This is because all the normal people AND the men's rights activits and lnceIs are condemning her. But if the roles were reversed (if a man did to a woman what amber did to johnny), you would have so many men's rights activist blaming the woman and saying that the guy is being faIseIy accused. And funny enough, you would get a ton of men saying "iF tHe RoLeS werE revRsEd no one would be supporting the guy". But as we can see from the massive support johnny has, thats false.
Seriously though! Also, when the roles are reversed, the red pill movement and even people outside of it hate on women much more I feel like. The bar to hating women is so low. Hell, Jenny from Forrest Gump is considered the villain of the story despite the fact that her behaviour was way more harmless than the behaviour of 90% of the male love interests in YA movies, who literally abuse their partner, cheat on their partner, gaslight them, yell at them, stalk them- but it's okay because they have childhood trauma.
The fact that "reversing roles" here makes it still fucked up just kinda validates that theory. If ur goal is to look at the world through a lense if complete egalitarianism, role reversal is a logical conclusion to find inequality. I think its unhealthy to do, but still logical if you subscribe to that.

As a woman who lives alone, this is sooooo concerning. I hate the idea that anyone who had my wifi password could tell whenever I'm alone! Eeeeeeek
Great moment to set up a guest network, and replace the basic setup admin password on the router to something only you know.
He’s lying to stir up controversy. The admin password is different than your wifi password, although it’s a good idea to change it from the default one. It’s also (generally) impossible to access the admin control panel from a device not connected to the network, so he would have to be sitting outside of your house to check anyway.

fr, i truly can’t believe that people are seeing this as anything other than deeply scary

It IS an app. It would take a lot to do stuff like that. I don't know tech at all and any app on the store is an app. Duh.
Most of what he does is straight up illegal...
By having an account on a dating app you agree to a bunch of terms and services and there is probably one about infos having a personal use, but by showing them in a video (doxxing is illegal btw) he puts them to a public use, and it's illegal in most country
I would love to see instragram or hinge lawyers see these videos
also the huge copyright/trademark infringements of his fake live app
To me, what this guy is doing just makes dating apps even more creepy and off-putting. It’s like catfishing to a whole new level

Those types of guys hate women so they will ALWAYS be on the guy's side, whether or not the guy is in the wrong
But when a woman does something bad, they dont have the same bIind support.
The psycho girlfriend is like the biggest trope out there... what are they even saying?
The fact that "reversing roles" here makes it still fucked up just kinda validates that theory. If ur goal is to look at the world through a lense if complete egalitarianism, role reversal is a logical conclusion to find inequality. I think its unhealthy to do, but still logical if you subscribe to that.
the sheer amount of like. disdain and bitterness you have to have toward women to think that developing an app to "expose" their "lies" about being soulmates is some kind of flex
The funny thing about Bateman is that you could easily interpret his character as not actually being a serial killer himself, just a pathetic guy who is constantly imagining that he is and suffering from delusions of grandeur
Yep, even in the book he's an unreliable narrator who contradicts himself a lot. There's even a theory that Patrick isn't real, he's an imagined concept made of all the other character's fears. It's kinda left up to you to decide how 'real' he is.
