  • The coleus is a genus that houses many species and cultivars, usually sporting brightly colored foliage that grabs our attention. They look even better when you bring your eyes close to the leaves (Like stained glass in an old cathedral). The care is extremely easy, and the propagation even easier. However, they do require full sun and constant watering and pruning to be happy. In this episode I share the full care tips, pruning tips, as well as propagate them both in water and in soil. As usual, I share updates at the end of the episode.

Loved watching you, you explain really well. I didn't know it was easy to propagate as I wanted to put them on the border of a long balcony, I kept buying 2 of each lol. Now I will try to propagate them. Also, thank you for explaining about pruning, I didn't know how to do it.

Just a gut feel, those popular plant-tubers here are watching Sean’s videos. Their videos are turning more “hands-on” rather than just plant-talk. Something uniquely, Sean. Just me, peace 🌿

Started with one little pot coleus and now have four medium sized pots. When I trim the leaves, just couldn’t bear to throw them so ended up water propagating lots of leaves and they grow roots so quickly! Now looking for other types of coleus cuz yes, they are too pretty!! 😊 thank you for this video!

Ah, full sun, that’s what I did wrong.
I found water propagating tended to result in damaged roots, but I put lots of cleaned moss from the lawn & it gave more stability to the roots when planting in soil. Although a frog broke the stem but it re-established itself & it’s great but I’ll get it in full sun for better growth, thanks for the tip. Such beautiful plants you’ve got!

Coleus, which are now in the genus Plectranthus, can be grown in shade or full sun depending on the cultivar. The older species and cultivars were all shade loving but now cultivars that tolerate full sun are available. Sometimes I like the blueish flowers depending on the leaf color and pattern but all you have to do is deadhead the fading flower stalks before they set seed.

i started with one pot, then it became four pots of really bushy plants but i grew it away from direct sunlight cause I don't have a balcony and gardern, so they are greener than red. My battle with this plant is that they grow so quickly, and flower so often it's a race everyday to nip off new flowers.

Hi Sean, try to pinch the littlest every top leaves often everytime you see it. They will grow like crazy and get bushy really fast. I'm a fan of colleus and really proud of my collection. Oh one more thing. I also spray them with Gandasil D once a week, the leaves are just get bigger 😍

Coleus plants prefer full morning sun and shade in the afternoon.
Some varieties can tolerate full sun all day in areas with high humidity.

If you clip the two newest leaves at the top of the plant you will then get four, this way the plant becomes wider and more bushy. You can try it, it really works.

They are very adaptive to many kinds. Perhaps you can narrow it down by how often you are willing to water it. In some cases they have to be watered daily.

Best way is to remove them by chopsticks. Only chemical pesticides can deter them so you might want to opt for that as a last resort.
