Today I repaired my friends Retron5 just based on this video. Same chip was dead, I had to wait ~3 weeks to get it from China to EU. In my case nothing was not shorting, but as soon as I did plug PSU in, it was 1.2V on all lines. First I tried desoldering 0ohm resistor on the vcc rail and then up till that place it was 5V. Soldered it back and next in line was this tiny RT8097, replaced it and Retron5 started working. Since they sell those only in pack of 10, I cut few from the strip and taped inside of console housing with note that "if it does not power on, try replacing this chip". This video actually saved at least one more Retron5. Thank you!
Absolute long shot here. You don't know what the SOT23-5 component is on the back of the power board labelled under the U51 chip. I've been searching for what seems like a lifetime
Take a look @2:24 the W26P chip there was some damage on that chip that looks like the pad on the bottom is broken and or lifted copper from the board.

I’ve messed around with electronics in the past, but never these little surface-mount components... since all your footage is through the microscope, I didn’t catch on to how small they really are til this video, when you dropped that one on the mat & it’s just a tiny black speck? I said “what” and googled the size of a surface-mount capacitor, it says 2mm x 3mm?? Friggin hell that’s like soldering down a sesame seed, that’s crazy!
my 1st one fried... i used another power supply that looked like the one that came with it but then i smelled a burn.... didnt realize i had the wrong power supply. the weird thing is, the led on the power button would light up if i came closer to the console with my hand at the back where the power cable would plug in. i bought the new limited edition that came out 2 months ago though
Thanks Beo. Half of it was still attached and it seemed to clamp it down OK. Although I haven't actually tested the controller ports on that side 😳 I should go and do that. 😬
I cheated on this one and skipped straight to see if you fixed it. I have a faulty one here that someone sent me ages ago. I've not seen another fix, excited to see if I get the same shorts. 😁👍
These things are seriously cool. I'd love to have one but seems the cheapest way to buy one is to import it from the US and that isn't exactly cheap either haha. Great fix though, very quick at "remembering" it from last time haha.

Funny enough, I got a Retron5 some 4 years ago and the shipped a power cable with it that BLEW A CAP when I plugged it in. They refunded and replaced it but good lord, that's some sort of incompetence :/
ok i got me a multimeter for something else i was doing, i gotta drag out my modded retro 5 and see if i can't figure out where the problem is, i think i have a similar issue

Very nice video my friend I have a question I have a Sega Genesis with 80 built-in games with two wireless controllers you have to put batteries in the controllers but for some reason they won't pair is there anyway I could possibly get them working
Thanks Jay. Not sure, do the controllers have any leds on them to show you they're getting power? I would start there, just to make sure they are powered. After that, it could be the wireless ( not sure if RF/Bluetooth) connection, so I would look at the transmitter/receiver for possible damage. Good luck! 👍

The power supply sent with it was a European one, so i used the same power supply I bought for my one. But yeah, I've heard that too. My power supply is actually a USB powered 5v, and it seems to work perfectly.
Hi pal, wonder if you could help me i've come across 2 retron 5 one with power issue like in the clip above and another the death grip where the snes port stops working but none have power supply. I know its 5v 2amp plug but not sure wether it is positive inside and negative outside an vice versa. As someone thats worked on them can you tell me or point out a plug that i could use without taking the risk or blowing up the other one!! P.s. i know this clip is over 2 years old but i have recently come across it

Ok you got to ask yourself, for a unit that isn't all that old, it looks like a regular thing, Which it shouldn't be. I wonder what's causing this in the first place. Figure that out and you could prevent this happening to others.
