The last camera I bought is my PEN-F. If they would bring a beter (water tihjt PEN-F) I would consider it. Nothing else. As foor the rest: Any camerra without EF is a no go. All the lense you mention are inferior to any Olympus ones.
Inferior - Right...
I have a G9 for more professional work and an OM-D E-M5 iii for my every day carry with a Lumix 14mm f2.5 as the G9 with the 10-2t f1. 7 is a very big kit to carry around all the time.
Currently sitting on the 12-35 and the 20mm 1.7 and hoping for GX85 delivery next week. Starting my M43 journey now as an ex 'pro' photographer returning to enjoy rather than (try to) make money. Yourself and James Popsys got me there re M43, Thanks!
Thank You :)
I think one of the beauty of m43 is that it's an open mount. You can mix and match m43 camera with different brand of lenses.
Now, both Olympus and Panasonic cameras have different strengths.
Olympus - IP53 WR, computational photography (Live ND, Live GND etc), stack sensor etc.
Panasonic - Video codec, video assist features, human detection.
And the Panasonic cameras bodies are equipped with IBIS. That means it can match with Oly non-OIS zoom lenses perfectly.
I would choose OM-1 + GH7 + GX10 (not released yet, so replaced by G100D)
Lenses will be Oly 12-40 F2.8 Pro, Oly 40-150 F2.8 Pro, PL 15mm F1.7, PL 25mm F1.4 II, PL 9mm F1.7, Pana 42.5mm F1.7
It will cover 18mm to 300mm equivalent.
Starting with Olympus / OM System, If money was a factor I'd go for the EM10 mk4, otherwise go straight for the OM-5 and get weather sealing and an expanded feature set. Lens wise go straight for the 12-45 f4 pro (sublime) and add one fast prime for your street / low light work, pana 15mm if you can afford it, otherwise Oly 25mm f1.8 or 17mm f1.8 if you prefer 35mm equiv. If you can afford it get the 40-150mm f4 Pro as well, then you are covered from 24mm equiv to 300mm equiv with no gaps in two light lenses, total carry weight of that setup is about 1.1kg! The F4 Pro lenses are off the hook in terms of quality and performance vs price.
Another thought Grant, if were starting out again, I'd likely skip the dumping money in my current 35mm kit, and go medium format Fuji GFX for serious photography, and Micro Four Thirds for most of video, street, journalistic and travel shots, as it M4/3 is a better fit for that. M4/3 also sets your images apart from the look of 35mm, as does Medium format sets your images apart from 35mm in terms of quality, perspective, depth, impact and overall quality, for the extra bulk and expense of 35mm why not medium format?
Back in the film days I shot mostly medium format, (RB67, and Bronica S2A and EC as medium format was what Pros used for serous images, 35mm was a more for newspaper and photo journalists.
Great Video - and I agree with almost everything! I´m using G9 and the GX9 extensively for 5 years now and they both are incredible work horses with perfect specs. And it´s fun to use them!
GX9 for the streets and G9 for fashion. For streetphotography I always use the Olympus 17mm F1.8 and Oly 12mm 2.0 - these lenses are outstanding! Small and fantastic quality and they have the manual focus clutch with depth of field indication for perfect zone focussing. And, I love the 42.5mm 1.2 for fashion and portraits and the 10-25mm F1.7 for fashion. What a lens for the G9. I´d rather buy the 25-50mm F1.7 than the G9 II.
Honestly I would pretty much do my MFT journey 99% the same as I did. I began with the Olympus E-M10 mark II and the M.Zuiko 17, 25, and 45mm f1.8s and the Olympus 40-150 f4-5.6 telephoto. The only addition I would've added at the beginning is the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 pro lens. Maybe after that the Olympus 75-300mm for birds, wildlife, and sports. Nowadays I recommend someone to start with the Olympus E-M1 mark ii right away. Preferably used, prices are amazing these days for that body. Mft forever!
Have to agree with you...the E-M1 Mark II is still a beast. The 12-40 is a must, likewise with the 45/1.8 and for range the 75-300. I personally would add the 75/1.8 and 60/2.8.
As for lenses, I love my lumix/leica 10-25 f1.7. I'm getting the 25-50 f1.7. And that covers everything I could want for photography and video.
Have gone full circle starting with G3, G5, G6, GX7, GX85, GX8, GX9...LX100 1&2...sold the lot (as I went along) with most of the best lenses.. Pretty much loved them all, some how convinced myself to go APSC. Built an entire Fujifilm system, fantastic stuff but never enjoyed using them as much. Now back in 2024 have got myself another LX100 II, and GX9 (bit of a job to find a decent one though). These cameras are not going anywhere! - Happy photographer once again...I won't even start about the lenses😂. I love Lumix cameras and the Menu system is unbeatable in my humble opinion. I just say that when I first got the G3 I knew that I was on the road to a cool system...just took a few wrong turnings without any need to slag of the competition.
My first ever M43 shoot was at a sand dune area--wind kicks up and packed the 12-32 lens--that was put away in my bag--full of sand and killed it--But my GX-8 and the 12-25 worked all through the day,, so... No GX-9! I would never give up the weather proof GX-8 construction. It's still in my small kit with the 12-35 2.8 II and the 35-100 2.8 (new Leica version I don't think has shipped). I bought a GM-1 --it was cheap-- for a fun pocket camera--It's my everyday carry w/ the Pana-Leica 15mm 1.7--the best "charactor" lens in the line-up. No argument from me on the G9... great video and the updates have transformed it into a new camera. For landscape I use the 8-18 2.8-4 Leica lens.
For various reasons (focus related) I bought an Olympus EM1 mkIII.. for photo-centric projects. The 45-150 2.8 lens is simply spectacular,, as is the 12-100 f4. I went with the Olympus 25mm 1.2 as my speed demon. I have a few other bits and bobs about.. but the above list would be my "do it all over again" kit.
Robert. I have the Gx9 and I love it. I wish the battery life was greater. It’s the only thing I dislike. I have 3 original batteries and even with that it’s seems not enough… I also replaced myself the front dial which became defective. It was successful, but now the built in flash doesn’t fire anymore. I m not taking the camera apart anymore. I wish I find a solution without taking it apart. I don’t use the built in flash that much, but it sucks that now is there for nothing…. Have you experience something like the flash not firing in you gx9, or in any of your other cameras. Thank you for you content. You are like a buddy of all of us. Great energy and very likeable
Hi mate :) Thank you very much for the support... No, my Gx9 has been all good up to this point, even the battery life is fine for me :) Thanks again for the comment :)
If I were starting out today with M4/3, doing what you are doing Grant, I'd pretty much follow what you suggest. If I were starting out as new to photography or as a serious hobbyist, I'd not cheap out on the body and more so the lenses, Good lenses that fit what you want to shoot make like easier.
The greatest thing about Micro Four Thirds, is you can develop a love affair with photography and video on a shoestring! If I wanted a tight budget compact camera kit that does good Leica-esque stills and basic 4K video that generally looks great, and the LX-100 Mk1 would be a must for me.
If I wanted to try out Micro Four-thirds on a pro level for peanuts on shoestring, and get epic photos and cinematic HD video, I'd get a GH3. It's offers seriously Leica looking photos for like and video $100! Plus it's weather sealed and the 1080 All-I is class leading HD. Get a 20mm F1.7, and a walk around zoom and for $350 you've got something that will beat Pen 5 and give a pen 7 a run for the money. It's weather sealed and shoots like a modern camera.I love the way the GH3 renders clean images with film-like color color. And video has a off the card cinematic look. ''
A friend in Tokyo shot a stunning low-light 4K piece 10 years ago on a GH3 that newer and more advanced full frame cameras didn't match:
TOKYO City of Lights 4K th-cam.com/video/L7r2bOt1xoQ/w-d-xo.html
Another filmmaker friend here in Oregon still uses a GH3 on pro shoots to get a classic film look
'Why I still love this 10 year old, $200 camera in 2022!'
th-cam.com/video/jYrHdWBN5PM/w-d-xo.html
If I were going to shoot video, I'd get a body with video In-body stabilization and records in 10-Bit. And if I were serious about doing client work and learning video production I'd seriously consider an M/4/3 BlackMagic Cinema body, great low-cost way to get your feet wet in Cinema workflow.
Yeah man :)
@@grantrobertdavies Thanks Grant for being a champion of Micro Fourth Thirds.
@@jackoneil3933 It's a great system :) Especially for my personal and street stuff, there is not much more Id want :)
Been using the G9 with 2 big zooms being the 10-25 and 50-200. GM1 with primes like the 9mm and 42.5mm. This combo really does any situation from Casual to Pro. It's tough for me because as much as I'd like a new GX9, it's noticeably bigger and heavier than a GM camera. But at the same time the GM cameras are a bit too small to grip comfortably and probably not enough room for IBIS or a tilting screen. Also considering Panasonic's reputation as a video camera, it's highly unlikely they will release a strictly photo oriented camera with mediocre video specs again. So Gx9ii is the most realistic compromise.
Hard to say… when I bought the GH5 the GH5 2 came out within a few months later. But I didn’t know that at the time and the GH5 was on sale for a great price. I’m happy with the GH5 but would have loved the GH5 2. I’ve got all the key lenses but would have loved to have gotten the Voightlander 17.5 just because I hear so much about it. And maybe a meta bones adapter for my EF glass but I can’t justify the cost for both of those.
As an Olympus shooter, I couldn’t really improve on my favorite lenses: 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro, 75mm f/1.8, and 12mm f/2.0; though the 17mm f/1.2 might be a temptation to buy for some professional work scenarios. The body would be the OM-1ii.
3 cameras...I have 2 G9's almost by accident. Paid U.S. $998 for each new at BH. Got the second because I was so worried that such a phenomenal camera would be discontinued. I got the G9ii during the $500 off Trade in Bonus offer at BH. Very powerful. I will be giving one G9 to my son. I would love to see a weather sealed S9 in MFT for the small camera. Let's see what the upcoming announcements are about. LENSES...12-40 F2.8 Olympus incredible, Lumix 25mm f1.7 inexpensive and great, 15mm Pan Leica like new used 40% off list so couldn't resist, Panasonic 35-100 f2.8 same deal. Couldn't afford either of them new but omg they are versatile and sharp. Well that's it. I'd love FF sometimes but I'm very content with my MFT kit.
Pretty much agree with your choices Grant. I do however prefer viewfinder, dials and grip on my Oly EM5iii to the GX9 having used both, and I guess that I'd stick with my OM system 12-40 f2.8 pro II (which has been fab on the G9) instead of the pana leica 12-35 f2.8 (altho I confess I have never used the latter and it does look good). All other lenses you said spot on for me.. why not treat yourself to the Pan leica 25mm f1.4 you mentioned, you won't regret it, its lovely.
I have the original Olympus OM-D Mk10 with the EZ 14-42 & 40-150 tele lenses. Even though I shoot with a mix of sensor sizes and film stock, I am constantly surprised at the results I get from the little M4/3 setup. One small bag and the little Oly was my constant kit companion in a recent trip OS.
You can replace both the G9 and GH6 with the G9 mark ii. I just got one and it is a huge improvement over the Mark 1. I also have a GX85 which is a fun camera to use.
Panasonic is apparently announcing a new MFT camera next week... lot's of speculation as to what it will be. Hopefully a GX9 mark ii with the G9 ii internals. I would definitely buy one if this happens.
I am not sure what is happening with Olympus but they have said they are committed to the PEN line.
I have an e-M1 iii and and PEN-F. The e-M1 iii (or an OM-1) is complementary as it can do things the Panasonic cameras can't and the PEN-F is just a gem. I will probably stop buying anything new Olympus as their target is really outdoors/wildlife and are not catering to the creatives any more it seems.
For lenses I love the Panasonic Leica primes... 9mm 1.7, 15mm 1.7 the 25mm 1.4 (amazing on the PEN-F), also the Lumix 20mm 1.7, 35-100 2.8 as well as the 100-300. I also have Olympus 7-14 and 14-40 Pro zooms as well as the 60mm macro. For portraits I have the Sigma 56mm 1.4. This covers all of my needs for the types of photography that I do.
Further I would love to get the 12mm 1.4 and eventually swap out the 100-300 for the the 100-400, or the Olympus 300mm f4 prime
Oh wow, great to hear that. A GX9 II would be heaven. I love this camera and the functions and specs are unique! A completely underestimated machine, who needs Leica?
Keeping it simple (I don't do much video). A pair of GX9 (new version whatever)...one GH6(new version etc)...Pan-Leica 9mm...Pan-Leica 15mm...Olympus 60/2.8 macro
Olympus Pro 40-150/2.8 with TC 1.4 and maybe TC 2.0....Cheers. Oh...Olympus 12-40 (2.8) if needed.
Great review Grant. I sold my Pentax DSLR gear about a year ago and purchased a GX85 with panleica 25. I then added the panleica 15 mm and the Lumix 45.5 . I'd probably do exactly the same over. By the way, the Lumix 42.5 is really good, it was cheap AF and weighs like 120 grams. Would have preferred the GX9 but it was twice the price of the GX85. I shoot mainly street and documentary and some events like local concerts. I am considering getting a second body. Haven't decide between the GX9 or G9. Interested in the Panleica 9 mm for real estate interiors and woodland photography and the lumix 30-100. All my lenses and the ones I am considering are under 200 grams! I use DXO for noise reduction, I've been shooting quite a few local concerts and DXO takes away any low light issues.
Awesome!
i love the reverse appropach that you got ❤
Thank You :)
Still on the lens journey with Olympus! I'm just a hobbyist but the Oly 17mm f1.8 and Oly 14-150mm II I won't ever sell. The 14-42mm ez lens is surprisingly good but I prefer the Pana 12-32mm kit lens (hate automatic zooms!). Think of adding the Oly 12-45 f4 pro, but don't think I need a pro lens haha.
cameras GX9, G9II, and try find a low shutter count GX7,
start with 15 1.7 and 9mm 1.7 for the GX9,
both pancake primes for the GX7 ,
100-400, and 12mm 1.4, for the G9ii,
then add 12-35 and 35-100 2.8 and either the 12-60 or a couple of super light zoom lens such as the 45-150 for travel.
Fun thought experiment! At first I was surprised by the G9 and not G9ii, but with a budget and having to get 3 bodies, that makes sense :) I have never shot panasonic, I would like to try a G9ii soon though if I stick with m4/3!
I wouldn't change much of anything (except selling my G9 if I weren't in a bind). I have all my bases covered: EM-1 Mark II, Panasonic 200 2.8, Olympus 40-150 2.8 PRO, 60mm 2.8 macro, 12-40 2.8, 75 1.8, 45 1.8, and the Panasonic 9mm 1.7. I want the OM-1 and the 90mm f3.5 macro, 300mm f4, the Laowa 6mm, and the Sigma 56 1.4.
OM-1ii, Pen-F, OM-5
Good question.
Firstly, I might not go with M43. 😅 I like M43, all my cameras so far are M43, but a string of decisions and events (or... lack of decisions and events) surrounding the two main manufacturers don't inspire confidence.
Otherwise: I've veered more towards OM, but I think with a do-over I'd continue to mix and match brands. At the current time, yes, GX9. Replacing both my GX80 and OM-5 as runaround cameras. Big, serious, outta-my-way wildlife camera? OM-1ii, replacing OM-1 and E-M1X. And I think I might stop there with the bodies.
Lenses... might skip the Lumix 20mm, decent lens but I hardly use it, and that AF gets tiring after a while. I'm actually more fond of the 12-32 kit lens as a compact wide-angle. Going slightly longer: certain youtube channels sing the praises of the Lumix 12-60mm; I might look at that. 😉
I have the Lumix 35-100 power OIS ii. Fantastic lens, it's become one of my regular carries if I'm not going light. Thing is, it's not really long enough for wildlife, and sometimes I wish the wider end was a lot wider, wouldn't have to change lenses as much for landscapes and such. Sacrifice a little reach and aperture for the 12-60, or more aperture for the Lumix 14-140?
One or two primes wouldn't be out of the question. If I'm shunning the 20mm... a nice fast 25mm? And what else. Hmm...
Wildlife-wise, I'd get the Olympus 300mm Pro again, no debate or quibbling on that point. It's fantastic. I'd back it up with the Oly 40-150 Pro, or the proposed new 50-200/250 if OM pull their finger out.
I'd continue my on-again, off-again love affair with manual lenses, but I'd probably skip the process of getting sniped on ebay for lenses that have sat in a musty attic for decades, and go straight to 7artisans and Brightin Star.
Sticking with my guns which are the EM1 mkii with Zuiko 17mm F1.8 and Zuiko 45mm F1.8. I want to keep my setup small and humble.
Love your content Grant and must say I followed many of your advices in last 3 months 🙂
I started with smaller budget so this is currently my set:
1. Olympus e-pl9 + Oly 25mm 1.8 as everyday carry, family shots and street photography as it perfectly fits it the bag
2. G80/85 mostly by listening your reviews 😊 and Sigma Trinity 16, 30, 56 all 1.4. Sigmas are more affordable and still have beautiful quality
Now considering for third camera full-frame S5 or S5 II as i might get some good price + Pana S 50mm 1.8
You mentioned S5 so I think my third and main camera for client/proffesional work to get S5 II.
What do you think?
Yeah, I’m probably going to go a S5mkii for work soon :)
My work is:
Fashion in Situ
Promotional
Street/Documentary
As I have no video requirements, the Olympus setup I’d build is as follows:
OM-1 Mk II for the Live Grad ND feature
OM-5 with factory grip
E-PL10
1.4/20mm
2.8/12-40
4/8-25
4/40-150
1.8/45
1.8/75
1.2/42.5 Nocticron
2.5/14
1.7/20
Olympus OM-1 II, OM-5 or Em-5 III, and a range finder. Have a PEN-F currently. I would add a fish eye and some longer telephoto lenses. Primes add 9mm Panasonic 1.7, Olympus 20mm 1.4, 45mm 1.8, 75mm 1.8. Bonus would be G9 for adapting manual lenses.
I have a recently purchased second hand E-M5 III that I'm loving, after having the Panasonic G7 for so many years.
I am very much eyeing the PEN-F a lot. I think I shouldn't get it since it's sooo similar to the E-M5, and even worse in hardware since it's around 4 years older or so. But damn the PEN-F looks so good.
It would be an absolutely non rational purchase. Is it smart to skip in your opinion? It would cost me even more than the E-M5 did around here, second hand, so I'm fighting myself against it but I would love to have one haha.
@@JuanManuelTastzian I was hoping for a PEN F II or an OM-5 II. If you do get the PEN F, they have held their value. I’ve also been thinking about exploring a GX-85. Perhaps a case of the grass is greener.
I'm a huge fan of Olympus IBS, a bit surprised that isn't a higher priority for you. I do mostly photography though, and I'll have to get into videography soon for my electric skateboard company, so it might be time to look at Panasonic for that.
I might get an Olympus omd em1 mkii soon :)
@@grantrobertdavies that's what I shoot on, I love it.
Maybe not buy as many used bodies. Started with a new GX85 in March 2019. Now five years later I also have GX9, G85, G95 and G9. Would have been fine with just these but got sidetracked by Olympus with a new EM10 mk ii with two zooms. Then a new EPL-7and like new EM5, EM5 mk ii, EP-5, EM-1, etc. Couldn't resist the bargains which are now nowhere to be found. I count myself lucky that I went overboard when I did now that they are becoming collectibles.
1 seul : Lumix GX 8 II 😁
Atm g7 and g9... Lens. 8 18 25 1.7. 14 42. 45 150. 45 175 and 100 300
I m considering 14 140 for travel and daily lens to replace 3 lens plus the 12 60 laica could be ann option even if i tempted to the 12 35 2.8 for a low light but the focal length feels too short... { i dont like to sweech lens too often otherwise 12 35 and 35 100 should be perfect..
Completely unwittingly I pretty much followed the pattern you described - GX9 + G9. Then 12-35mm, 35-100mm. I now also have a 12-200mm, 100-400, 14-140mm zooms. 30mm & 45mm primes.
How does the olympus 12-100 perform on those lumix body then ?
especially at the telephoto end (cuz paring with panny body the ibis would be turned off tho)
@@huasheng9695 It’s the Olympus 12-200. Performance is good. Stabilisation isn’t much of an issue as I do photography only.
Just traded in my nikon z6 and two lenses(24-120/50 1.8) for the lumix g9ii and I really love the olympus lenses so I splurged at MPB for 12-40 2.8, 40-150 2.8, and the 25 1.2. So excited to get back to MFT
The Panasonic 20mm 1:1.7 pancake is generally a decent lens at a good price to keep the form factor nice and compact on the GX9.
The 12-60 Leica has something special about it but I haven’t tried the 12-35 to compare.
Also for context the Fuji X100 has external dimensionsw of 128 x 75 x 53 mm (5.04 x 2.95 x 2.09″) and weighs 478 g (1.05 lb / 16.86 oz) (including batteries). The Panasonic GX9 has external dimensions of 124 x 72 x 47 mm (4.88 x 2.83 x 1.85″) and weighs 450 g (0.99 lb / 14.36 oz) (including batteries). The lens is interchangeable on the Panasonic however giving it a compelling advantage to the fixed lens Fuji.
own both (and the 35-100 2.8) while I prefer the 35-100 in their overlapping range - and not just for the extra speed the 35-100 is stunning probably one of the best zoom lenses out there on any system, but I prefer the 12-60 over the 12-35 2.8... not sure why, just maybe slightly better character images if not technically better
cant believe the 20mm is all the way at the bottom of comments, its an amazing lens. I guess people dont like the AF speed but i rarely if ever find it a problem and the sharpness is great.
well, you gotta think everyone’s needs and ideas of building a kit is different :)
I would skip Lumix and go to Olympus for the colors, unfortunately they soon no longer exist so hardly good advice! Read up on lenses and get the ones you need, don't just go buying because some other person uses xyz length in their workflow. I must say, I find MFT users seem more satisfied with their gear than other systems - probably because of the size advantages, because there are some real downsides to the smaller sensor as well,
