  • Epic BMX's resident historian ( / _epicbmx ) Phu Vu gives his argument on the current state of the BMX industry. BMX is dead is a thesis that a lot of people have shared over the last few years, but is the pastime that hundreds of thousands of bicycle enthusiasts over the world agree?

53 in the UK here. I buy up BMX that people have given up on, restore and replace parts, ride them, then sell them to fund the next one. Too old to ride hard now but I still give it a go. Just being out on a freshly finished ride makes me happier than almost anything else.

Hell yea dude! Some of the oldest riders I know slay the hardest. Because they're smart and don't take overly risky reward situations and just steady progress. Muscle helps too especially if you come from the era where kids completes being like 34lbs was normal. So glad I came at the end of that .-.

Now you can go to any cycle shop or big box store and get bmx wide tubes and other parts. You still get the odd boomer who tells you to “get a grown up bike” but the skateparks are packed man. We are being priced out of the sport. The last bike I built cost $850 before I started. When the dust settled, I added another $1,500 to the tally.
Although I love that bike, every time I look at it, all I see is a car.
Loved Scotty Cranmer calling out the tricks live. What a banger.

Riding bikes mid 90s to early 2000s was the highlight of my life. Spending weekends in the city with names like Taubin, sammon, delrosa, grimaldo, wormz, etc etc... riding the Animal warehouse .. going to FBM jams... shady Demos .. filming with Scerbo backflipping up Rutgers College 6 set just to get the crew motivated to have a jam session, riding the park with Cranmer, cruising asbury park at 3am with Dom Biro and the Rodeo Peanut crew, chilling with Tunney... then BAM, scene goes underground and NOW, is just an OD biggest Trick thing. Wish the old days would make a comeback. Even if they do not... i still have my awesome memories. And some of the greatest days of my life.

I use to subscribe to BMX Plus! back in the day, was a fan of the monthly "Radical Rick" episodes. I raced back in the 80's, and tried again in my 30's (Cruiser class), when my son showed a short lived interest in the sport. I still ride my bikes, I get a lot of strange looks, and I get asked frequently about being "too old" for the bike. I still enjoy riding my BMX bikes, even though it's just a casual cruise. Great content, I enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work, and have a good one.

Every now and then I get the bug to restore my BMX bike, old Elf frame/fork with lots of GT parts. Missing GT chain (ones with the holes in them), bad hubs, bad pedals, missing crank bolts (Peregrine). I honestly should just sell off what parts aren't junk. Phu must be hitting with Hunter to even thank of saying it's dead.
It's just expensive as all get out to keep up an 80s bike with Era, correct parts in decent condition, and not repop parts.

There was a magazine on the East Coast called Total BMX. I think it was dedicated to a single BMX organization like perhaps the WWBMXA (World Wide BMX Association).

I rode BMX in the late 90s (first new bike was a Specialized Fatboy Y frame, owned DK SOB, etc) and I honestly miss the days of just ripping a bunny hop off of a curb, jumping the grass in between peoples driveways, etc. it was the simple things I really enjoyed. We looked up to guys like Nate Wessell, Dave Mirra and Nyquist, Mat Hoffman, etc. honest question…is flatland still a thing? I remember it was smaller scale and all Scandinavians that were popular…tennis balls in the spokes and the whole nine yards 😂

I’m part of the problem; in the 80’s I loved BMX. I was excited when X Games came out but once I got my license I was done with watching or riding. Here I am in my late 40’s watching and riding( for health reasons, LOL) but I’m all in again.

It is not dead at all! It has just returned to its non-mainstream place on cycling culture. I do long rides and commute with my 20 inch and people look at me with a sort of admiration. Advances on the field like the wtp swampmaster will create new events and attract new enthusiasts! Long live BMX!!

I just rebuilt 2 bikes not long ago and got a frame that needs built and a GT Dyno for sale. All was bought within a year times frame. Guess it depends on who you are but in general yes it's probably dead.... but I love them they bring joy and happy to look at the two rebuilds everyday.

BMX is NOT DEAD! it's evolving. I have been involved since 1982/83. 7 years ago I founded 308 BMX in Nebraska because the scene in the Mid West seems to have dropped off a bit. In Nebraska we currently have 3 tracks on the East side of the state and one of them is poorly ran so it doesn't get a lot of action or attention. We are in the process of fundraising for not only a USA BMX sanctioned track but also a 1 acre asphalt pump track. My hope is that North Platte Nebraska becomes a mecca for Mid West BMX and skateboarding! It's not dead, it just has to be marketed differently! I love your comments about the magazines and DVD/VHS. It's a new world and we as pioneers have to and MUST ADAPT! I am 52 now and I just built a 2006 SE 24" Floval Flyer to hopefully compete again with. I haven't raced competitively in 30 years. Alfredo, I subscribe to your page and really enjoy most of the content, keep up the great work and PEDDLE PEDDLE PEDDLE!!!!!!!

Hilarious timing with me finding this video. I've been a skater for as long as I can remember. I recently got the idea I should bike to work. I remember having Mongoose BMX bikes and the toy BMX finger bikes when I was in elementary, playing Dave Hoffman's games etc but I never considered myself a BMX kid. I do remember how much fun I had as a kid just tearing through our neighborhood though. So at the ripe age of 29, I bought a Stolen a couple weeks ago. And my mid 30s manager said "BMX IS DEAD" when I asked him if I had found a good deal on a used Aaron Ross Sunday, just a few days before I ultimately bought the Stolen. I don't think he realizes that the sport and technology exploded since he gave up and became one of those weird super-soldier tactibros. People like Ryan Williams have made those of us with an inner child, sort of peek in again to see what's happening. I'm glad I'm back in the game, I've been having so much fun the last couple weeks just reteaching myself how to properly bunny hop, and traverse the weird mapping of Texas cities. I don't think anybody on our robotics team has a cooler commute than me now haha. So no, its not dead. I remember when I was casually getting into skating, it was because pros were going nuts at the time. Then I got hardcore into it. Idk if that will happen to me with BMX but I've found my lifer bike and it feels so natural to be back on two wheels!

Lower BMX prices. As a EX bmx rider we get older and start having kids then we can’t afford parts even small things like seats. I’m a local rider outta San Diego CA and I remember forks almost cost the price of a bmx price.

I would watch bmx shows like Props on fusion tv back in the day. I skateboarded alot but loved bmx as well. Even inline skating was alive back in the early 2000's. I miss them days man. Turning on Fusion TV or ESPN to watch X-Games, Maloof Money Cup, Dew Tour, etc.

I wish I still had my old Diamondback Viper. Must have been a late 90's model. I aggressive inline skate too. I rode BMX and bladed hard from 01-09' and took a 10 plus year break. I bought blades recently some Razors Shifts - and a triple eight helmet - a must!!

I understand the OP wants everyone to support every aspect of Bmx. Reality is, as a 40 something year old rider, I too have my own business, family and other interests too. I'm not going to realistically tune into EVERY video, search a bunch of riders etc. Who has time for that? As a teenager, yes, but not as a grown adult. I own 3 Bmx bikes and get on them couple times a week. That in of itself is a blessing at my age. I know the OP is doing some low-ki plugging, but there's only so many bikes and parts one needs.
